• Is there any software or hardware which lets you stop, slow down, speed up or even reverse time?

  Obviously I'm talking about time in terms of the PC clock rather than real time. We were testing an application we've developed at work by setting the clock forward and back to simulate different scenarios and I started thinking how useful it would be if you could adjust the rate(?) of the system clock with finer control. So you could make a minute pass in a second or a day pass in 30 seconds and watch how the program you're developing copes with changes in date and time. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows of any software or hardware which can let you do some or all of the above.

  What's the best way to keep packages up-to-date (ie with the last security fixes) without worried about major version update ? For instance, apache2 for squeezeis is 2.2.16 (https://packages.debian.org/source/squeeze/apache2) However, last apache2 version for the 2.2.x branch is 2.2.27 Test repository can't be used since they use the 2.4.x versions and I'd like to stick on the 2.2.x (to avoid migration issues) How would you handle this situation and how can I update to 2.2.27 ?

  My Canon camera produces files like IMG_1234.JPG and MVI_1234.AVI. It also timestamps those files. Unfortunately during a trip to another timezone several cameras were used, one of which did not have the correct time zone set - meta data mess.. Now I would like to correct this (not EXIF, the file's "modify" timestamp on disk). Proposed algorithm: 1 read file's modify date 2 add delta, i.e. hhmmss (preferred: change timezone) 3 write new timestamp Unless someone knows a tool or a combination of tools that do the trick directly, maybe one could simplify the calculation using epoch time (seconds since ..) and whip up a shell script. Any help appreciated!

• Alienware m15x (older model) BSOD investigation

  A frined of mine asked me to help him with an Alienware m15x laptop that had a little service history. It was bought in june 2008, serviced in january 2009 for a random fps drop problem, Alienware returned it saying nothing was wrong. The laptop still had hiccups, but after juggling a few drivers and settings, the fps drops weren't as noticeable. Eventually it died in Sept. 2009. It would not boot up locking itself on a white/gray screen. (i think it was overheating .. clocking in 100 degrees Celsius). So back to Alienware it went. They replaced the GPU and all was fine. Up until these blue screens started showing up. One other thing that was updated was the HDD and a Windows 7 reinstall, in August. From then on it seems to have started its BSOD. Could this be the culprit? Why? 0_o The original Windows was Vista but it was upgraded with a digital download/purchase of Windows 7 Home Premium and activated after installing windows. No errors on the old HDD, just on the latest installation. LE:Due note that now the old HDD is used to see if issues re-occur. So please, I am in need of someone who can interpret these windows dump files: Minidump I may have come to some conflicting conclusions. So if someone can clarify each dump/date and the probable cause/error it had; and a final conclusion or solution, we would be very grateful. • How can I read out internal pdf creation/modified date with Windows PowerShell?

  PDF files seem to have a separate set of file properties which contain (among others) a creation date and a modified date (see screenshot here: http://ventajamarketing.com/writingblog/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Acrobat-Document-Properties1-300x297.png). Those date obviously can differ from the creation and modified date shown in the file system (Windows Explorer). How can I access the date information in the PDF file and read it out in Windows 7 with Windows PowerShell (or maybe another method)?

• Project not publishing start/finish date for custom TFS work items

  I've got a TFS 2012 project set up with custom work items, that include Start and Finish date read-only fields (Microsoft.VSTS.Scheduling.StartDate and FinishDate). When I publish one of those custom work items from within Office Project, it does not populate those fields the same way as when I publish a Task work item (builtin TFS work item). I've looked at the transitions in the work items, and also the TFS project field mapping XML file but can't find anything that explains the difference in behaviour. What am I missing?

  I recently ran into a problem with the following scenario: I have data with a parent/child data with a one-to-many relationship from the parent to the child. I want to be able to update parent and existing child data AND add a new child record all in a single post. I don't want to create a model just to store the new values. One of the things I LOVE about MVC is how flexible it is in dealing with posted data.  If you have data that isn't in your model, you can simply use the non-strongly-typed HTML helper extensions and pass the data into your actions as parameters or use the FormCollection.  I thought this would give me the solution I was looking for.  I simply used Html.TextBox("NewChildKey") and Html.TextBox("NewChildValue") and added parameters to my action to take the new values.  So here is what my action looked like: [HttpPost] public ActionResult EditParent(int? id, string newChildKey, string newChildValue, FormCollection forms) {     Model model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);     if (model != null)     {         if (TryUpdateModel(model))         {             if (ModelState.IsValid)             {                 model = ModelDataHelper.UpdateModel(model);             }             string[] keys = forms.GetValues("ChildKey");             string[] values = forms.GetValues("ChildValue");             ModelDataHelper.UpdateChildData(id ?? 0, keys, values);             ModelDataHelper.AddChildData(id ?? 0, newChildKey, newChildValue);             model = ModelDataHelper.GetModel(id ?? 0);         }        return View(report);     }    return new EmptyResult(); } The only problem with this is that MVC is TOO smart.  Even though I am not using a model to store the new child values, MVC still passes the values back to the text boxes via the model state.  The fix for this is simple but not necessarily obvious, simply remove the data from the model state before returning the view: ModelState.Remove("NewChildKey"); ModelState.Remove("NewChildValue"); Two lines of code to save a lot of headaches.

  Hello, I have a fairly simple question about these 2 templating engines. I'm trying to make a future/paste date, a fixed time from now, e.g. 18 months ago, or tomorrow. I know that it is possible to do this with a java date object inside a velocity/freemarker template (something like $date.add(2,-18)), but I would like to do this with DateTool or freemarker core. This is something that I see as purely presentational (just think at the default dates you see in flight booking forms), so I can't see any reason why a templating engine shouldn't be able to do this. Is it possible though? If so, how?

• Generate POCO classes in different project to the project with Entity Framework model

  I'm trying to use the Repository Pattern with EF4 using VS2010. To this end I am using POCO code generation by right clicking on the entity model designer and clicking Add code generation item. I then select the POCO template and get my classes. What I would like to be able to do is have my solution structured into separate projects for Entity (POCO) classes and another project for the entity model and repository code. This means that my MVC project could use the POCO classes for strongly typed views etc and not have to know about the repository or have to have a reference to it. To plug it all together I will have another separate project with interfaces and use IoC. Sounds good in my head I just don't know how to generate the classes into their own project! I can copy them and then change the namespaces on them but I wanted to avoid manual work whenever I change the schema in the db and want to update my model. Thanks

  I have a dynamic Flot graph with dates on the x-axis and numbers on the y-axis. To get the Flot-plugin to read the date object correctly, I had to convert the dates to ticks (with getTime()). My problem is that I can't revers the ticks back to a normal date in my tooltip hover on the graph. I've tried to revers it with this: dateTimeObject = new Date((jsTicks - 621355968000000000) / 10000); All I get, no matter what jsTicks is, is "Jan 02 0001 hh:mm:ss (almost current time)" What am I doing wrong?

  I'm trying to leverage NH to map to a data model that is a loose interpretation of the EAV/CR data model. I have most of it working but am struggling with mapping the Entity.Attributes collection.   After reading the documentation for MySQL Workbench I got the impression that it's possible to alter a database in the server (e.g. add a new column) and later incorporate the DDL changes into your EER diagram. At least, it has a Synchronize Model option in the Database menu. I found it a nice feature because I could use a graphic modelling tool without becoming its prisoner. • SQL server query not showing daily date result

  I have a simple user production report where daily quotas are tracked. The sql returns a weeks worth of data for all users and for each day it tracks their totals. The problem is if they are out for a day and have a zero production for that day then the result query just skips that day and leaves it out.
