• How to recover data from software RAID 5 disk partition

  I have CentOS 5.8 on my computer, with 5x 1TB hard drives. I used software RAID. (RAID 1 as a boot partition md0, RAID 0 as a root partition md1 and RAID 5 as /home partition md3). Unfortunately one of these hard drives failed lately and I want to replace it with a new one. I want to know that is it possible to change this hard drive without data loss? The important partition is RAID 5 so in theory if one of hard drives failed I should be able to recover its data without any problem. But in practice how can I do that?

• Which events specifically cause Windows 2008 to mark a SAN volume offline?

  I am searching for specific criteria/events that will cause Windows 2008 to mark a SAN volume as offline in disk management, even though it is connected to that SAN volume via FC or iSCSI. Microsoft states that "A dynamic disk may become Offline if it is corrupted or intermittently unavailable. A dynamic disk may also become Offline if you attempt to import a foreign (dynamic) disk and the import fails. An error icon appears on the Offline disk. Only dynamic disks display the Missing or Offline status." I am specifically wondering if, on the SAN, changing the path to the disk (such as the disk being presented to the host via a different iSCSI target IQN or a different LUN #) would cause a volume to be offlined in disk management. Thanks! Edit: I have already found two reasons why a disk might be set offline, disk signature collisions and the SAN disk policy. • hp DL380 G4 won't boot with disk plugged into front USB

  We outgrew a few older external USB backup drives, and purchased WD My Passport 1 TB USB 3.0 drives to replace them. When they are plugged into the front of our G4, it will blink forever after the BIOS (which is current, BTW) and never boot, even though the USB disks are not "bootable" per se. Our old drives did not exhibit this behaviour (so I don't think it's this type of issue that I've read about other servers.) The old drives were USB 2.0, but this shouldn't make a difference, AFAICT--the specs say all of the G4's USB ports are the same, 2.0, anyway, so I'm not sure how one port would handle a USB 3.0 device better than another. If we plug the new drives in one of the back slots, it boots fine. What's the cause? My concern is that the front USB port, and possibly the motherboard, might be starting to die. (We are experiencing other strange issues with them, or were initially, like intermittent file permissions errors despite wide-open ACL on these local drives, but some serverfault users have me convinced they may be coincidental software/security related issues.)

• Computer sponteously reboots when doing heavy file copy to/from disk

  I've been fighting with this problem for the last 3 weeks where my machine will just instantly reboot. No BSOD, and when i checked the event log all that was reported was the generic "Kernal-power" error with the detailed information pointing to a hard crash. This is a machine that was working for 18 months before these crashes started happening. When they started happening is after I added 3 HDs in a RAID-5, upped the memory to 12gb, moved to a new house, added a SSD and added about 5 case fans. I have thus eliminated the RAID, and determined that the SSD was not the cause (because it was still crashing even though the ssd wasn't connected). I've run memtest several times over night with no memory problems showing up. I've run IntelBurnTest to max out the cpu to see if it was a heat issue and at full tilt after 20 min it was only at 85C and the machine didn't crash. I also took a look at the voltages during this test, with a screenshot at the bottom of this post I've ruled out a software issue by reinstalling windows 7 ultimate x64 a total of 5 times, but even during that the install it crashes. Happens sometime during file copying at the beginning, or during uncompressing files, or sometimes during running windows update. The only discernible pattern i can see is that it seems to crash when hard disks might be spinning up or when they are accessed heavily from large file transfers. My current guess is that it is probably an issue with the MB, PSU or the power coming through the outlet. Any suggestions of what i could try to troubleshoot or what may be wrong? • Change popup format for Kopete in Gnome (Ubuntu 10.04)

  After trialling Empathy which was included with Gnome/Ubuntu 10.04 I decided to go back to Kopete since I was losing chat messages. However, for some reason, Kopete is now displaying all popups in a big, ugly window with four options (ok, cancel, view, ignore, or something like that) that actually all seem to do nothing. I tried looking for options in Kopete to change the popup style to the nicer Gnome style one which goes up in the top-right of my desktop, but it doesn't seem to be possible with this release. So I had to resort to removing all popup messages from Kopete to prevent my screen being taking over by a popup requiring action for every incoming chat message. Unfortunately, this now means that I do not get any notifications when people message me - and so I can go a couple of hours without realising that they did. Anyone know how to get the nice, unobtrusive popups working in this version?

  I am trying to query IP addresses from Forefront Firewall logs, and I am a little stuck on the IP formatting C0A8E008-FFFF-0000-0000-000000000000 Can anyone give me the MSSQL command to turn this into standard human redable? UPDATE, I now see that I kust need to convert the first 8 charecters from hex to decimal....which I can then convert to IP. the trick is to parse those first charecters from the field with SQL

• Splicing from a weird DVD-format

  I have a DVD full of video clips. I want to exact only some of these clips. I tried to use mplayer/mencoder's nice feature of Edit Decision List (EDL). However, the video timer seems to constantly reset with each video clip (less than 20 seconds) and its EDL does not have a video clip number or anything like that. I've tried using VLC to extract the video into an MPG file, but the same timer problem persists. What's a good way to splice out part of these clips from the DVD? I'm willing to write a small program in any language to make this work.

• Convert partition to Virtual Disk image

  I have a 250 GB HD with a XP partition. I partitioned the XP Box to 112 GB, since the max Virtual PC can load is 127 GB. I have a new motherboard and can't load into the partition, so I am using Windows 7. I have tried using WinImage to create the image but it creates an image of the whole disc (250 GB) and will not load on Virtual PC cause of the size limit. What would be best to convert to VHD correctly?

• lwp-rget changes file format automatically to .bin?

  Im trying to recursively get an html page to get everything that's there and save it to my directory. Lwp-rget from perl allows me to do this but I'm having the problem that its getting all the files and changing them from .rpm, .xml, .html, etc to .bin. I've been trying to maybe use the --keepext=application/xml or any type but it continues to save the file as .bin. Any way I can stop that auto formatting? Thanks.

I'm familiar with powertop, and it appears this works to an extent, in so much that it show the user files that were written to. Is there any other utilities that support this feature. Some of my findings: powertop: best for write access logging, but more focused on CPU activity iotop: shows real time disk access by process, but not file name lsof: shows the open files per process, but not real time file access iostat: shows the real time I/O performance of disk/arrays but does not indicate file or process

• ffmpeg volume parameter format

  ffmpeg's -vol parameter is confusing me. 256 => normal (i guess meaning same as input volume, no change) 512 => (double the volume - read this somewhere). So what to do for 3 times the volume? 1.5 times the volume? Basically, lets say I have the max sound amplitudes (audacity levels) in 3 files as: 0.8 0.6 0.9 I want to amplify in the first two files, so that max=0.9 in all files. What parameters of -vol I would use?

• What the best way to recover from when your RAID H/W incorrectly thinks a disk is missing

  I have a Windows 7 system with an MSI motherboard (running the latest AMD BIOS) and two of my four disks (not the system boot disk) configured via the Mobo as RAID-1. After a normal system restart today, the RAID BIOS reports that one of the two drives has been disconnected or has failed. It's not really failed; via recovery tools I can verify that if I take the BIOS out of RAID mode. But I can find no way to re-add the second hard disk to the array and rebuild via the BIOS - the only option seems be to delete the array and recreate it, but I've done that once before and it blows away the disk. It's done this once before, however on a subsequent reboot after double-checking the drive cabling (but not changing anything) and it boot up fine. So I think the mobo RAID is a little bit flaky. At this point I would like to remove the RAID drivers, change to AHCI mode and switch over to using a Windows 7 dynamic mirror disk. But the RAID drivers seem somehow deeply bound into the Windows startup - I can't find anything like the good ol' safe-mode in Windows 7. If I boot from the Win 7 install disk in ACHI mode I can use recovery tools to log in to the Windows 7 installation, so the boot drive it seems fine with ACHI mode. Additionally, I can see all my other disks, run chkdsk on them and they seem to be fine. If I try to boot from the HDD in AHCI mode, it just reboots part way through, presumably because the RAID drivers load and conflict with the BIOS being set to AHCI. So: How do I strip the RAID drivers from my Win 7 installation? If I delete the RAID logical disk, will it really delete partitioning information, or is that just a poorly worded message when it says the data on the disk will be deleted? If I disconnect the 2 disks in a RAID array, then delete the logical disk array, and then reconnect and reboot still in RAID mode, will the disks simply revert to RAID single-disks like my other 2 and then maybe I can leave windows with RAID drivers by operate the disks as singles with 2 of them in a Windows dynamic disk mirrored setup? Does Windows 7 have anything like the Windows XP Repair Install, where it will reinstall the O/S binaries from CD, but leave apps and setup alone. I am really hoping I don't have to do a complete reinstall of Windows 7 - the last one, when I upgraded from XP, took me two days to get everything set up and installed.

• Disable "Turn off hard disk after" in windows 7

  How can I disable this feature? In the power options apparently I can only choose the minutes and I don't see a "Off" option. If I set it to 0 minutes, it sets itself to 1. For now I set it to 20000000 minutes, but a real solution would be nice.

• Optimal Disk Setup for OLTP SQL Server

  We have a high transaction (lots of reads and writes) database server (running SQL 2005) that is currently set up with a RAID 1 OS partition (C:) and a RAID 5 data/log/tempdb partition (D:). The C: has 2 drives and the D: has 4 drives. The server has around 300 databases ranging from 10MB to 2GB in size. I have been reading up on best practices for partioning the disks, but would like some opinions on our setup since we are so limited in the number of disks. It seems like RAID 10 is popular, but I dont think we could use it with only 6 total disks to work with. Thanks. • Suppress "running out of disk space" Message (per drive) on Windows Server 2003

  We have a database server with separate drives for OS, various data files and the transaction log. Our transaction log spills over onto other volumes as well- this is expected behavior. The problem is that we are constantly getting popups that our transaction log drive is out of space (and that I can free space by deleting old or unnecessary files). Is there some way to prevent this message from popping up for this particular drive?

• Solaris 10 5/09 can't find SATA disk

  We need to run standard Solaris 10 on a few development servers (Dell 530s) because we can't get a commercial application running on OpenSolaris (we're still trying). However, we are finding that sometimes when Solaris 10 goes to do the install, after setup screens, it can't find the SATA drive. We tried the BIOS setting described here: BigAdmin On some Dells 530s, Solaris GA installs fine, but on others it doesn't. OpenSolaris always installs. Is there some way we can determine (eg. installing OpenSolaris and examining the SATA driver used) what OpenSolaris detected and use some option or driver from it to get Solaris 10 installed on our development Dell servers?

• Disk usage on IIS, PHP5, performance problems.

  Hi everybody, I'm quite worried with a performance problem that I'm facing in one of our production servers. I'm working for a hosting company, so you can imagine how heterogeneous the applications runnning here are. All started with a call of a client complaining about the speed loading a Joomla. The setup is IIS6 (Windows 2003) with PHP5 and FAST CGI wich normally works pretty well. I've tested the loading time and indeed, he was right. 7 or 8 seconds to load, when usually this can be accomplished in 2. Seeing this results, I started to check first CPU and RAM. Everithing normal, 2GB of RAM free, 3%-8% of CPU activity. That's what I call a relaxed server ;). Unfortunately, digging a little deeper I've found the 'PhysicalDisk' counters quite high (above 10), specially the read queues. I've used Process Explorer to see wich of those processes has the higher deltas, but everything seemed normal. As the problem is specially related to PHP pages, I've checked specific IIS counters, as Actual connections, Number of CGI requeriments and Number of ISAPI requeriments. CGI -> 3 to 7 ISAPI -> 5 to 9 Connections-> 90 to 120 (wich appears at the top of the graph) More than a solution (I know this is hard to find), I would like to know if you have an specifical methodology to face this kind of problems.   Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

• Terrible Performance with SATA Drives on Dell PowerEdge, steps to troubleshoot?

  I had asked this question earlier and the question went missing so here it is again. Bought a DELL Poweredge 2950 to use as in-house QA Server. Disk performance is beyond terrible, 1000-4000 ms response time on the drive with our SQL Server database .mdf. Sql Server disk queue upwards of 300 at times. I'm a software guy, can anyone help me with steps to determine the issue? I don't know what RAID controller it has, how can I determine that? I'm speculating it could be BIOS issue. Perhaps the server used to have another kind of drive in it and when I added SATA the ??? buffer size is wrong??? Perhaps I chose wrong options (chose defaults) when setting up the RAID 1 arrays? I thought RAID 1 was a performance array?
