• Expired Windows Server 2008 trial remote activation

  I have a remote server which has an expired license. I can't currently add the new license because of a licensing server error so I need to reboot the machine. My question is will I be able to remote desktop onto the machine and apply the new license or do I have to be physically at the server. I know an activation wizard usually appears and doesn't let you go any further but does this same wizard appear over remote desktop? I don't really want to reboot the machine only for it to not come up again.

• How do most small businesses acquire Office licenses?

  A company I sometimes consult for is relatively small (40 employees), and they have a royal mess of Office licenses. OEM, Retail, Upgrades, O2K/XP/2K3/2K7, etc. They basically buy whatever retail license they can find cheapest online, and have someone track it all in a spreadsheet for compliance purposes. They also use a Microsoft Action pack license for getting another 10 copies of Office/Vista for free. While it all seems to follow Microsoft's licensing rules, it also seems horribly inefficient. I've talked to them about Microsoft's Open license, but they don't see any advantage to it. What do other relatively small businesses do? Are Open licenses popular, or do most of them just buy retail like my client?

My version is currently: Sharepoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010 core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update of Ms sharepoint Foundation 2010(kb2494001) 14.0.6106.5008 Server Version(Where I'm creating my Backups): SharePoint Server with Enterprise Client Access License Microsoft SharePoint Foundation 2010 Core : 14.0.4763.1000 Security Update for Office SharePoint Foundation 2010 (KB2345322) : 14.0.5123.5002 I would like to know if there is a way I could enable my backups from the Server to be compatible with my version. My only option is to downgrade my version since I'm not an admin to the server. Does my Client Access License an issue? Can I just downgrade my security update to match the one in the server? If there is would you please be kind enough to tell me how. ?

• Bypass a licence agreement when mounting a DMG on the command line

  I'm automating my Mac installation using puppet. As a part of it I need to install several programs that come in a .dmg format. I use the following to mount them: sudo /usr/bin/hdiutil mount -plist -nobrowse -readonly -quiet -mountrandom /tmp Program.dmg The problem is that some .dmg files come with a license attached, and so script is stuck accepting the license. (There is no stdin/out when running with puppet, so I can't manually approve it to continue.) Is there a way to pre-approve or force-approve the license?

• sshd running but no PID file

  I'm recently started using monit to monitor the status of sshd on my CentOS 5.4 server. This works fine, but every so often monit reports that sshd is no longer running. This isn't true - I am still able to login to the server via ssh, however I note the following: There is no longer any PID file at /var/run/sshd.pid - after a reboot this file exists. Once it is gone, restarting sshd via service sshd restart does not create the PID file. sudo service sshd status reports openssh-daemon is stopped - again, restarting sshd does not change this, but a reboot does. sudo service sshd stop reports failed, presumably because of the missing PID file. Any idea what is going on? Update sudo netstat -lptun gives the following output relating to port 22 tcp 0 0 :::22 :::* LISTEN 20735/sshd Killing the process with this PID as suggested by @Henry and then starting sshd via service results in service sshd status recognising the process by PID again. Would still like to understand this better. RPM verify suggested by a couple of answerers shows this: sudo rpm -vV openssh openssh-server openssh-clients | grep 'S\.5' S.5....T c /etc/pam.d/sshd S.5....T c /etc/ssh/sshd_config /etc/pam.d/sshd has the following contents: #%PAM-1.0 auth include system-auth account required pam_nologin.so account include system-auth password include system-auth session optional pam_keyinit.so force revoke session include system-auth #session required pam_loginuid.so Should that last line be commented out? • VMWare - Windows XP guest licensing

  Hi, If I have a VMWare ESXi server with 4 Windows XP guests running on it, I understand that I need a separate license for each guest. Is there a way to simplify license compliance on these VMs? For example, I want to create a master VM image and boot it 4 times. By default those 4 VMs will have the same Windows activation key installed. Is there a simple solution for this? Or is it ok to do what I've described above provided I have 4 unique license keys on hand in case of audit? thanks!

• How to Virtualize an OEM windows install.

  I've bought a new computer and like always it comes with windows 7 pre-installed. I'm a linux user by default but i still keep a virtual windows installation around. Is it possible to install my linux distribution, and use the OEM license that came with the computer to create the virtual instance? I have no intention of moving the license off the physical machine so i'm sure i could argue that i'm not violating the license but i don't expect that this would work and activate without great legal battles. So in the event that this doesn't work what other options do i have? Can i shrink the physical partition and have Qemu boot it? My thoughts are that windows would detect the change in hardware and fail. What can i do with this windows install as a linux user?

• Meta-licensing of applications

  I'm currently evaluating license management solutions for our customized and project-based applications, which are supported by a single server in the intranet of the customer. The applications use common functionality provided by the server (session handling, data synchronization, management capabilities, etc) and are installed on mobile devices. We allow our customers to run the applications on X devices and want to check on the server, whether the customer sticks to this limit (based on the sessions). We don't want licensing software to be installed on the devices itself (for example providing X serials to the customer) nor do we want to host an additional server for licensing in the intranet of the customer. If a client connects, our server should load the license for the application running on the client and verify, that there are sessions left. The licensing managers I looked at (12 products so far) focus on the application itself and don't allow me to implement such a floating behavior as described above. For example, this software could easily be used to create a "Standard Edition" or a "Professional Edition" of our server software, which is not our intention. In XHEO DeployLX there is a "Session Limit", which allows to limit the license to the currently established sessions in ASP.NET, which comes very close to my needs. I'm currently thinking of implementing a custom solution, which allows me to load and enforce custom-defined licenses per application on the server-side and a simple editor to define such licenses (which would contain a type and the limit itself), but I would appreciate an existing, easy to integrate commercial solution. I think it could be possible to use DeployLX for this task, but I would spend a lot of money for implementing most of the solution myself (except for the editor). • General questions regarding open-source licensing

  I'm looking to release an open-source iOS software project but I'm very new to the licensing side of the things. While I'm aware that the majority of answers here will not lawyers, I'd appreciate it if anyone could steer me in the right direction. With the exception of the following requirements I'm happy for developers to largely do whatever they want with the projects source code. I'm not interested in any copyleft licensing schemes, and while I'd like to encourage attribution in derivative works it is not required. As such, my requirements are as follows: Original source can be distributed and re-distributed (verbatim) both commercially and non-commercially as long as the original copyright information, website link and license is maintained. I wish to retain rights to any of the multi-media distributed as part of the project (sound effects, graphics, logo marks, etc). Such assets will be included to allow other developers to easily execute the project, but cannot be re-distributed in any manner. I wish to retain rights to the applications name and branding. Futher to selecting an applicable license, I have the following questions: The project makes use of a number of third-party libraries (all licensed under variants of the MIT license). I've included individual licenses within the source (and application) and believe I've met all requirements expressed in these licenses, but is there anything else that needs to be done before distributing them as part of my open-source project? Also included in my project is a single proprietary, close-sourced library that's used to power a small part of the application. I'm obviously unable to include this in the source release, but what's the best way of handling this? Should I simply weak-link the project and exclude it entirely from the Git project?

• Announcing Spacewalk Support for Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Customers

  Over the years, customers migrating to Oracle Linux have asked for options to provide a transitional solution for their existing system management tools (such as Red Hat Satellite Server) while evaluating and planning migrations to Oracle's Enterprise Manager, which is offered at no additional charge with Oracle Linux Support Subscriptions.  Based on this request, we are pleased to announce support for the open-source community project, Spacewalk, which is the basis for both Red Hat Satellite Server and SUSE Manager.  Effective today, customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier Support subscriptions have access to a fully supported Spacewalk build which can be setup to easily manage Oracle Linux systems.   Spacewalk support for Oracle Linux requires Oracle Linux 6, x86_64 for the server and provides support for Oracle Linux 5 and Oracle Linux 6 (x86, x86_64) clients.  This solution requires Oracle Database 11g Release 2 as the  supported database repository for Spacewalk with Oracle Linux.  Within the next several weeks, a limited use license for the Oracle Database will be included with this offer.  Until this is complete, customers may use an existing Oracle database license or they may begin by downloading a 30-day trial license from eDelivery.  Customers with Oracle Linux Basic and Premier subscriptions will automatically have access to the channel hosting the supported build.  Please review the release notes for further instructions. Oracle Enterprise Manager is still the recommended enterprise solution for managing Oracle Linux systems and we want to provide the easiest transition path for our customers.  We are excited to offer this solution to our Oracle Linux customers while they plan and implement their migration to Oracle Enterprise Manager.

• Is there an idiot's guide to software licensing somewhere?

  Basically, my knowledge on the issue is zilch other than the fact that open-source and closed-source exists. I'm a web developer (not a designer in the slightest), so I look online for things like icons. I've always been a big fan of these icons, which have a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. As far as I can see, this license says 'do whatever you want with them as long as you have a link back to me somewhere'. Is that assumption correct? Just today I found a new icon set, with a much more confusing license (found here), and to be quite honest I have no idea if I'm allowed to use them or not. At the moment I want to just use them for toy stuff that might never see the light of day, but then my source code is stored on Github, is it legal to store the icons there where they're publicly accessible? If I put them on my personal website that might have ads on it to make me five cents every now and then, is that legal? If I use them on a site that offers a free service to users, is that legal? If that site then starts making money (via things like paid subscriptions) or gets bought out by someone (highly unlikely but one day possible) is that legal? Is there some noob guide out there that explains all this stuff, because I would hate to start using this sort of stuff now only to have to change it all later. Even if I buy the icons, there's still licensing issues that I don't understand! :( And this sort of stuff keeps popping up more and more often...

• A Web Service to collect data from local servers every hour

  I'm trying to find a way to collect data from different servers around the world. Here are the details: There is only one single PowerShell script on servers that encrypts data (simple csv file) and sends with preferred method (HTTP/HTTPS Post could be) There is no more control on that servers. Can't install any service, process etc. Just I can configure script to execute every hour. This script also will have encrypted username/password/license key for every server. Script will compress data and send to me with these information. So I need a service (I'm not sure if Web Service is the rigth solution) on the cloud that will help me to: Will get data that is sent from servers using a method. Will authenticate request to recognize sender using license key/username/password and most importantly, Will redirect/send this filecab to my SQL Server on the cloud (Azure). Also it should seperate data according to customer information in license key. So every data for every customer will be stored in dedicated DB/Tables on my SQL All the processes above should be completed automatically. No way for manual steps. Question: A Web Service (SOAP or Restful) is the rigth solution for that?

I've written a program which interfaces with this system (actually, with it's backend MySQL database). The program is meant to be run on a client PC and (1) query the database to select an unused license from the pool available, then (2) mark this license as in use by the client PC. The problem is, I've got a concurrency bug. The program is meant to be launched simultaneously on multiple machines, and when this happens, some machines often try and acquire the same license. I think that this is because steps (1) and (2) are not synchronised, i.e. one program determines that license #5 is available and selects it, but before it can mark #5 as in use another copy of the program on another PC tries to grab that same license. I've tried to solve this problem by using transactions and table locking, but it doesn't seem to make any difference - Am I doing this right? • NVIDIA x server - "sudo nvidia config" does not generate a working 'xorg.config'

  I am over 18 hours deep on this challenge. I got to this point and am stuck. very stuck. Maybe you can figure it out? Ubuntu Version 12.04 LTS with all the updates installed. Problem: The default settings in "etc/X11/xorg.conf" that are generated by the "nvidia-xconfig" tool, do not allow the NVIDIA x server to connect to the driver in my "System Settings Additional Driver window". (that's how I understand it. Lots of information below). Symptoms of Problem "System Settings Additional Driver" window has drivers, but the nvidia x server cannot connect/utilize any of the 4 drivers. the drivers are activated, but not in use. When I go to "System Tools Administration NVIDIA x server settings" I get an error that basically tells me to create a default file to initialize the NVIDIA X server (screen shot below). This is the messages the terminal gives after running a "sudo nvidia-xconfig" command for the first time. It seems that the generated file by the tool i just ran is generating a bad/unusable file: If I run the "sudo nvidia-xconfig" command again, I wont get an error the second time. However when I reboot, the default file that is generated (etc/X11/xorg.conf) simply puts the screen resolution at 800 x 600 (or something big like that). When I try to go to NVIDIA x server settings I am greeted with the same screen as the screen shot as in symptom 2 (no option to change the resolution). If I try to go to "system settings display" there are no other resolutions to choose from. At this point I must delete the newly minted "xorg.conf" and reinstate the original in its place. This is a triple boot computer and not a VM. I know it is possible to make the second display work in my system, because when I boot from the install CD, I perform work on the native laptop monitor, but the second monitor shows a purple screen with Ubuntu in the middle, so I know the VGA port is sending a signal out. If this is too much for you to tackle please suggest an alternative method to get a second display. I don't want to go to windows but I cannot have a single display. I am really fudged here. Here is what I did to provide more info (maybe relevant, maybe not, but here is everything): 1) Took my Lenovo W520 right apart to see if there is an identifier on the actual card. However I realized that if I get deep enough to take a look, the laptop "won't like it". so I put it back together. Figuring out the card this way is not an option for me right now. 2) (My computer is triple boot) I logged into Win7 and ran 'dxdiag' command. here is the screen shot: 3) I tried to look on the lenovo website for more details... but no luck. I took a look at my receipts and here is info form receipt: System Unit: W520 NVIDIA Quadro 1000M 2GB 4) In win7 I went to the NVIDIA website and used the option to have my card 'scanned' by a Java applet to determine the latest update for my card. I tried the same with Ubuntu but I can't get the applet to run. Here is the recommended driver from from the NVIDIA Applet for my card for Win7 (I hope this shines some light on the specifics of the card): Quadro/NVS/Tesla/GRID Desktop Driver Release R319 Version: 320.00 WHQL Release Date: 3.5.2013 5) Also I went on the NVIDIA driver search and looked through every possible combination of product type + product series + product to find all the combinations that yield a 1000M card. My card is: Product Type: Quadro Product Series: Quadro Series (Notebooks) Product: 1000M ***********************EDIT #2******************* Additional Symptoms Another question that generated more symptoms I previously didn't mention was: "After generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig, go to additional drivers, do you see nvidia-304?" 1) I took a screen shot of the "additional drivers" right after generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig. Here it is: 2) Then I did a reboot. Now Ubuntu is 600 x 800 resolution. When I logged in after the computer came up I got an error (which I always get after generating xorg.conf by nvidia-xconfig and rebooting) 3) To finally answer the question - No. There is no "NVIDIA-304" driver. • Video stutter when using external drive

  When using boxee to play video files off of an external western digital 1TB drive formatted NTFS, I notice a slight stutter in the video every 5-10 seconds. When using mplayer, it doesn't stutter as often, but it still stutters occasionally. If I play the video off of the local sata drive, it plays fine even in boxee. I use this computer as my HTPC and I just switched from windows to linux on it. In windows, I never had any sort of stutter playing movies from the drive. I am using the latest intel graphics drivers (for the intel GMA 950) root@eee-htpc:/home/htpc# grep wd /etc/mtab /dev/sdb1 /mnt/wd2 fuseblk rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=512 0 0 I notice that despite trying to use ntfs or ntfs-3g, ubuntu uses ntfs-fuse which I've heard is slower. /dev/sdb1: Timing buffered disk reads: 80 MB in 3.07 seconds = 26.08 MB/sec root@eee-htpc:/mnt/wd2# dd if=/dev/zero of=./120mb bs=1024 count=120000 root@eee-htpc:/mnt/wd2# time mv ./120mb /home/htpc real 0m2.095s user 0m0.016s sys 0m0.736s Even though fuse has a reputation for being slow, it should easily be fast enough for playing standard definition video files. So why the video stutter? edit: The issue seems to be overhead cpu usage from either playing off of a usb device or ntfs/fuse. Watching CPU usage with top, local files use 10-40% CPU. Watching the same video on the external formatted ntfs, it spikes to 170% (over 100% because of hyperthreading). To me it seems like it must be overhead from the fuse driver, though I don't know if it has more or less overhead than ntfs-3g. It's a EEEBox B202 that has an atom 270, so not exactly the most powerful out there. edit2: I believe the solution would be to use non-fuse drivers or different fuse drivers. so far I have not been able to. edit3: I've probably edited this more times than I should, but as an update I have upgraded ntfs drivers to ntfs-3g 2010.8.8 external FUSE 28 - Third Generation NTFS Driver using the following PPA - ppa:x3lectric/team-iquik-releases. When first opening a video file in boxee that's on ntfs there's still the same amount of lag. After a few minutes of video, the lag seems to go away and the cpu usage comes down to 10-40%. Every so often though, it begins to stutter again. Also, if I skip ahead/back in the file, it begins to stutter a lot.
