• Oredev 2012: Summary and source code

  This week, I had the pleasure to be invited to talk at Oredev, a really cool conference taking place in Malmo, Sweden. The whole event is awesome, including a very special dinner on Monday including sauna and swimming in a 6 degrees cold Baltic sea, and a reception with dinner at the town hall, including the mayor himself. Considering Malmo is a town of 300'000 inhabitants, it is a pretty nice occasion and the historical building itself is really worth seeing. For those interested, I placed my pictures on my Flickr account. I had a workshop on Tuesday morning about Windows 8 development with XAML/C#, and then a session on Wednesday about MVVM in Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8, of course using MVVM Light. I was very nervous because I reworked some of my demos as recently as this morning, in the wake of the Build conference last week and the release of both the Windows Phone SDK and MVVM Light V4.1. Everything went well however, and if I judge by the people I talked t after the talk, and Twitter, everything went pretty well. Before my talk on Tuesday, I had the pleasure to see a talk by Iris Classon (@irisclasson) on the challenges of being a "n00b" and a woman in software development. I especially appreciated her research and conclusions on the lack of women I our industry, a topic that is dear to my heart (because I want the best possible future for my two daughters, and also because I really enjoy working with women on projects, and getting a different insight on the art of software development. I really want to thank the excellent organization committee for their hard work and their fantastic welcome to Malmo. In particular Emily Holweck did a wonderful job and was super helpful throughout the preparation and the conference itself. I made a few pictures during my stay, all with the new Nokia Lumia 920, and hope you will enjoy them too. The source code and the slides… The source code is available for download from Skydrive. Due to time constraints, I was not able to show this demo during the workshop, but I publish it anyway, hoping it will be useful to someone. • Partitoning to install Ubuntu but already have 4 main partitions

  I want to install Ubuntu alongside of Windows, but there's a 4 primary partitions limit. So there's: BIOS_RVY (10GB) System (100MB) (Windows) (C:) Windows (D:) Data I'm not sure what to do in this situation. This is my girlfriend's laptop and she doesn't want to remove MSI's pre-installed recovery partition, even though I'm pretty sure she's never used it. What is it exactly? Also, does Grub render Windows's "System" partition redundant?

• Is my work on a developer test being taken advantage of?

  I am looking for a job and have applied to a number of positions. One of them responded, I had a pretty lengthy phone interview (perhaps an hour +) and they then set me up with a developer test. I was told that this test is estimated to take between 6 and 8 hours and that, provided it met with their approval, I could be paid for my work on it. That gave me some pause, but I endeavored. The developer test took place on a VM accessed via RDP. The task was to implement a search page in a web project that requests data from the server, displays it on the screen in a table, has a pretty complicated search filtering scheme (there are about 15 statuses and when sending the search to the server you can search by these statuses) in addition to the string/field search. They want some SVG icons to change color on certain data values, they want some data to be represented differently than how it is in the database, etc. Loooong story short, this took one heck of a lot longer than 6-8 hours. Much of it was due to the very poor VM that I was running on (Visual Studio 2013 took 10 minutes to load, and another 15 minutes to open the 3 GB ginormous solution). After completing, I was told to commit my changes to source control... Hmm, OK. I get an email back that they thought that the SVGs could have their color changed differently, they found a bug in this edge-case, there was an occasional problem with this other thing that I never experienced, etc. So I am 13-14 hours into this thing now, and I have to do bug fixes. I do them, and they come back with some more. This is all apparently going into a production application. I noticed some anomalies in the code that was already in there where it looked like other people had coded all of one functionality and not anything else that I could find. Am I just being used for cheap labor? Even if they pay me the promised 50 dollars and hour for 6 hours, I have committed like 18 hours to this thing now. If I bug fix all of the stuff they keep coming up with, I will have worked at least 16 hours for free. I have taken a number of developer tests. I have never taken one where I worked on code that was destined for production. I have never taken one where I implemented a feature that was in the pipeline for development (it was planned for, and I implemented it through the course of the test). And I have never taken one that took 4 rounds and a total of 20+ hours. I get the impression that they are using their developer test to field some of the functionality, that they don't have time for in their normal team, on the cheap. Also, I wouldn't mind a 'devtest' tag.

• window.scrollBy only works in Firefox !? [closed]

  In my website I have this javascript code, adding a vertical offset when in the url a specific section of the page is specified (#): if (!!window.location.hash) window.scrollBy(0,-60); However this only works in Firefox... I'm pretty sure window.location.hash works in all browsers, that is, the symbol "sharp" is correctly detected in the url. • Is there a good commandline console for Windows?

  I usually develop with Ubuntu but now I'm forced to use Windows XP. It's actually pretty okay except the commandline is irritating. I miss resizing the window just with mouse but on windows I have to go inside the menus and change the width manually. Also copy pasting is hard from the console. You can only copy an area of the console, not individual lines. Is there any good alternatives for the default commandline console in windows?

• How do I get rid of this monitor error?

  I have an Nvidia card and two monitors. Every time I log in to Unity on Ubuntu 11.10, I get this error: "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors" I have tried opening nvidia-settings, but none of my experimental alterations to any of the settings has made a difference. I can still use my computer, but it seems to break the themes, icons, and styles so my computer looks like Unix circa 1992, which is a pretty annoying. How do I kill this error?

• Can't mount cd/dvd r/w drive in Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and I'm having some troubles mounting my drive or getting it to detect media. • Making headers readable on a multi colored background

  So the client wants a multi-colored background (think 4 colors of paint splats randomly all over the page. Because of this the headers are a bit hard to read. I've currently got them set up as black text with some white drop shadow, but it's still pretty hard to read in IE. • How do I create weapon attachments?

  My question is; I am developing a game for XNA and I am trying to create a weapon attachment for my player model. My player model loads the .md3 format and reads tags for attachment points. I am able to get the tag of my model's hand. And I am also able to get the tag of my weapon's handle. Each tag I am able to get the rotation and position of and this is how I am calculating it: Model.worldMatrix = Matrix.CreateScale(Model.scale) * Matrix.CreateRotationX(-MathHelper.PiOver2) * Matrix.CreateRotationY(MathHelper.PiOver2); Pretty simple, the player model has a scale and its orientation(it loads on its side so I just use a 90 degree X axis rotation, and a Y axis rotation to face away from the camera). I then calculate the torso tag on the lower body, which gives me a local coordinate at the waist. Then I take that matrix and calculate the tag_weapon in the upper body. This gives me the hand position in local space. I also get the rotation matrix from that tag that I store for later use. All this seems to work fine. Now I move onto my weapon: Matrix weaponWorld = Matrix.CreateScale(CurrentWeapon.scale) * Matrix.CreateRotationX(-MathHelper.PiOver2) * TagRotationMatrix * Matrix.CreateTranslation(HandTag.Position) * Matrix.CreateRotationY(PlayerRotation) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(CollisionBody.Position) * You may notice the weapon matrix gets rotated by 90 degress on the X axis as well. This is because they load in on their sides. Once again this seems pretty simple and follows the SRT order I keep reading about. My TagRotation matrix is the hand's rotation. HandTag.Position is its position in local space. CreateRotationY(PlayerRotation) is the player's rotation in world space, and the CollisionBody.Position is the player's world location. Everything seems to be in order, and almost works in game. However when the gun spawns and follows the player's hand it seems to be flipped on an axis every couple frames. Almost like the X or Y axis is being inversed then put right back. Its hard to explain and I am totally stumped. Even removing all my X axis fixes does nothing to solve the problem. Hopefully I explained everything enough as I am a bit new to this! Thanks!

• How steep is the learning curve when moving from shared (cPanel) webhosting to a VPS (e.g. Linode)?

I know it allows pretty flexible Linux installations, but for starters, besides choosing a distro, does one need to do more Linux sysadmin stuff besides the basic web hosting (DNS management, MySql database creations, users ftp/ssh access/ backups)? • How do you enable wobbly windows in ubuntu 11.04 without using compiz?

  I'm curious if there's a way to enable the more fun UI features in Ubuntu 11.04 that were available in previous versions. The effects I'm most curious about is the wobbly windows and the alt tab program switcher that looked like a rolodex. Those things were delightful. I've been reading about the compiz tool and since I'm a pretty noob user, I don't think I want to risk destroying my desktop for a chance to get these effects back. Any help would be appreciated. • As an Indie iOS Developer, is it more profitable to market apps heavily or focus on publishing more apps? [closed]

  At first I thought that if I made a bunch of $0.99 apps that were all pretty nice that they would eventually start to make me some decent passive income. However, after publishing five $0.99 applications in the the Apple App Store, I'm finding that I make around $5/day, which is basically nothing. Should I invest time into creating an even better app, hire a designer, spend money on PR and marketing, and then keep spending time updating/managing that app? Or should I continue to produce more applications solo?
