• How to remove trailing slashes from URL with .htaccess?

  The situation Across the entire domain, we'd like the URLs to hide file extensions and remove trailing slashes, independent of the domain name itself (as in, works on any domain). Sample of our directory structure We're not using index.* files except for the homepage. / /index.php /account.php /account /subscriptions.php /login.php /login /reset-password.php The goal Some examples of how these files might be requested, and how they should look in the browser: / and index.php -- mydomain.com (literally just the bare domain name). /account.php or /account/ or /account -- mydomain.com/account /account/subscriptions.php or /account/subscriptions/ or /account/subscriptions -- mydomain.com/account/subscriptions As you can see, there are several ways to access each webpage, but no matter which of the 2 or 3 ways you use to get there, it only shows the one preferred URL in the browser. The question How is this done with .htaccess using mod_rewrite? I've banged my head against the wall trying to figure this out, but in general, the rewrite flow would seem to be something like this: External 301 redirect ( mydomain.com/account/ -- mydomain.com/account ) Internally append .php ( mydomain.com/account -- mydomain.com/account.php ) I've been Googling this all day, read thousands of lines of documentation and config texts, and have tried several dozen times... • IIS Not Accepting Active Directory Login Credentials

  I have an ASP.NET web form using Microsoft's boilerplate Active Directory login page, set up exactly as suggested. Windows Authentication is activated on the "Default Website" and "MyWebsite" levels, and Domain\This.User is given "Allow" access to the site. After entering the valid credentials for This.User on the web form, a popup window appears asking me to enter my credentials yet again. Despite entering valid credentials for This.User (after attempting Domain\This.User and This.User formats), it rejects the credentials and returns an unauthorized security headers page (error 401.2). Active Directory user This.User is valid, the IP address of the AD server has been verified and SPN's have been set up for the server.   I just want a little clarification concerning hosted CMS like shopify.com, solidshops.com (i learnt shopify runs on ruby on rails) so let me be specific about hosted CMS based on Drupal :: www.buzzr.com, www.drupalgardens.com and www.pagebuild.net etc.. What i want to know is 1) Do they use the Multi-Site feature in Drupal to automatically creates all those 1000's of sites they host when a user sign up? 2) Do they create those 1000's of sites as sub-sites(if you like let me say subdomains)? 3) Do they use a different way other than the Multi-Site in Drupal?

• Need assistance matching a general theme style as well as eCommerce capability

  I'm in the process of acquiring a new design client. They are getting into the business of "auto parts wholesaling" and they want a storefront. My preference is/was to create something from scratch. However, here is an established trend in their particular market (similar parts, layout, etc). They insist on following the existing visual trend, as per the following: http://www.xtremediesel.com/ http://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/ http://www.alligatorperformance.com/ My plan of attack at this point is to find a comparable WP theme and a flexible (but useful) backend/product management. Their current demo site (which their previous developer made a stab at) is using Pinnacle Cart. It is no where near what they need, nor is it intuitive to work with. I was actually considering Magento for its greater abilities but I'm still considering options. That said, my two primary dilemmas are as follows: 1) I need a theme that mimics the general style of those listed. They explicitly said they didn't want anything too clean (e.g. ThemeForest, Woothemes) as it "wasn't rugged or busy looking enough" for their field. 2) I need a WP/Magento/WP e-Commerce (or any one of a host of other) plugin that will allow for bulk import/update of nearly 200,000 products, descriptions and images. I'm not opposed to manually interfacing with the DB for import, but in the end, I need a store/system that doesn't needlessly add 50 tables to accommodate some "wet behind the ears" concept of table normalization and is easy to add to. Anyway, if anyone has any quality suggestions regarding either of these issues, it would be most appreciated. Best.

  I have apache authentication set up on a site, it works fine in firefox and chrome, you type in the username/pass once and then you can happily visit any page on the site. Unfortunately this is not the behavior in safari. Every time you go to another page, you must re-enter your credentials. Is there some way I can look at the security exceptions for safari and set it to always trust the certificate or find some other setting to not ask for authentication on each page?

  Webmaster Newbie Question I have a low end vps (128MB RAM)running on Debian.I used a bash script by ilevkov to setup the site. After some trial and error, I managed to set up a WordPress on it. Just now I found out that my VPS can't send any email. I tested using the WordPress reset password email, and it shows The e-mail could not be sent. Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function... After some Google session I noticed that I can send email from ssh. So I tried mail [email protected] Subject: Halo dion some message . and the result said EOT /usr/lib/sendmail: No such file or directory "/root/dead.letter" 9/243 . . . message not sent. The question How can I fix my VPS mail setting?

• What constitutes a "substantial, good-faith effort to remove the links"

  We engaged the services of a 3rd party SEO consultant to assist us in managing our Meta data and to write regular blogs on our site http://cyberdesignworks.com.au Without our authorisation, the SEO also ran a link building campaign which has seen us Penguin slapped and we no longer appear in Google for a number of our core keywords. Since notification by Google that we have "unnatural links" back in March we have undertaken a significant campaign to rid ourselves of these dodgy backlinks by a number of methods. I have just received feedback on my 4th or 5th resubmission which is still advising that we need to make a "substantial, good-faith effort to remove the links" before Google will reconsider us for inclusion. After the effort that I have gone through to get links removed, I am now at a loss as to what else I can do to demonstrate "substantial, good-faith effort to remove the links". Below is a summary of the actions that we have taken to date. According to http://removem.com we had about 5584 back-linking domains. Of those we have successfully contacted and had removed links from 344 domains We ignored links from 625 domains as they were either legitimate press releases, natural backlinks or client websites containing an attribution link in the footer that points back to us. Due to our efforts, or the sites simply becoming defunct, removem.com reports that links from 3262 domains have been removed. We have contacted but are yet to receive feedback from 1666 domains so we can assume that the backlinks remain. We have configured an automatic 301 redirect for each of the links from these 1666 domains to point to http://redirects.sanscode.com/ which we are calling our Bad Link Catcher (a stroke of genius I thought). i.e http://www.mysimplewebdesign.com/create-a-perfect-webpage-with-four-important-tips-from-sydney-web-development-service-companies.php As we are a web design agency, we have a large number of client websites which contain an attribution link in their footer which points back to us. We have gone through the vast majority of these and updated these links to replace anchor text with an image and rel="nofollow" link. i.e <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://www.cyberdesignworks.com.au/"><img src="https://sessions.sanscode.com/site/assets/media/badges/Badge_CDW_SANSCODE.png"></a> See http://www.milkatwork.com.au/ An export from http://removem.com detailing the number of times we have contacted each link and whether it is still found or not was also supplied with each resubmission. The total back links reported in Google Web Master Tools has dropped from over 100K to 87K and I expect it to drop significantly lower once Google re-crawls each back-linking page. Based on all of the above, I am not sure what else I can do to to demonstrate a "substantial, good-faith effort to remove the links". I would sincerely appreciate any feedback or suggestions that you may have as I am out of ideas.

• Using rel=canonical and noindex in a 1-n partners enviroment

  We sell a whole site (domain, etc) to partners that create content that is shown together at the main site. What we want to achieve is that the main site copy is the original, but the one that is indexed is the partners copy. We want to do it this way so the search results point to the partner sites but never to the main site while the main site gets all the credit for the links. We are trying setting the main site article with a noindex, follow and a link to the partner article, and in the partner article we have a rel=canonical pointing to the main site article. Are we correct or the noindex at the main site will break the canonical reference?

• DNS - domain conflict?

  I was given two domains: domain.com & domain.info (they are on GoDaddy). And I was also given two servers, 107.105.38.99 - Rails app and 107.107.90.17 - Wordpress platform, on Digital Ocean. At first, I was instructed to associate domain.com with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Then I was instructed to de-associate this IP with domain.com and associated the 107.107.90.17 with the domain name domain.com. Then I was instructed to associated domain.info with the 107.107.38.99 (Rails app). Right now, when I go to domain.com the WordPress platform (107.107.90.17) loads fine and that is what is expected. But when I go to domain.info for the Rails app (107.107.38.99) I get redirected to domain.com. This is not expected and this is really weird for me. When I ping domain.info I get this: PING domain.info (107.107.38.99): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 107.107.38.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=74.601 ms Which is the expected result showing the correct IP but I don't understand why I get redirected to domain.com...(which when I ping is:) domain 64 bytes from 107.107.90.17: icmp_seq=0 ttl=50 time=75.057 ms The PTR Records on Digital Ocean are as follows: IP Address PTR Record 107.107.38.99 domain.info. 107.107.90.17 domain.com. and the DNS configurations on Digital Ocean are: domain.com A: @ 107.107.90.17 CNAME: * @ domain.info A: @ 107.107.38.99 CNAME: * @ I am not sure what the issue is, if you have any clue please let me know, I will be really grateful. • Avoid SEO loss after URL structure change

  We recently re-wrote our site from Umbraco to WordPress. This has been done by third-party developers. I have been the project manager and it is my mistake that I haven't notice the change of URLs that affect SEO until now. New site was launch last Thursday. The old URL for a "place" (a WordPress custom post type, in case you're WordPress expert and want/ need to point me to another discussion on WP Stackexchange) page is as follows: ourdomain.com/singapore/central/alexandra/an-interesting-place Now it has been changed to ourdomain.com/places/an-interesting-place I have already requested the third-party developers to work rewriting the URLs to emulate the old URL structure. However, it's taking quite a lot of time (we have multiple custom post types e.g. events etc. so it might be complicated; the developers seem quite by blur when I first mentioned rewriting URLs for the custom post types) In the meantime, I wonder if there is a quicker work around for this 1) Use .htaccess to rewrite ourdomain.com/singapore/central/alexandra/an-interesting-place to ourdomain.com/places/an-interesting-place This should avoid 90% loss of the search traffic. I suppose I can learn how to do this quite quickly but no harm mentioning it here 2) Use rel="canonical" to indicate that ourdomain.com/places/an-interesting-place is the exact duplicate of ourdomain.com/singapore/central/alexandra/an-interesting-place I will definitely go for both approaches (and also I'm changing 404 page to cater for this temporary isue) but I wonder if 2) is even feasible and if I have missed anything. Is there anything else you could recommend me in this situation. Let me know if my question is not clear anywhere. Clarifications The old website is on a Windows Server EC2 completely separated from the Linux EC2 instance on which the new site is running. In addition, the same domain "ourdomain.com" is used here (an A record is used to point to an EC2 Elastic IP). Therefore, the old server is completely inaccessible at the moment, unless you we use the IP address to old server (which doesn't help me at all in this case). Even if the old server is accessible, I can't see where one can put the .htaccess or a HTML file to do 301 redirect here. Unless I'm successful with my approach 1) or the developers can rewrite the URLs with coding, 404 page is really a choice for me.

  I'm trying to create a legal document with decimal numbered subclauses, then alpha and roman subsub and subsubsub clauses. (whew!) `1. MAIN HEADING 1.1 This is an example of a sub-clause and you can see that even though the words continue on to the right, it would be best if it wrapped around and formed a block to the right of the decimal number 1.2 In doing so the normal second clause should also wrap around but the second subsequent clause should hang in from the left and be in a block. See below for the remaining clauses (a) this list is completely for demonstration and should not be construed as legal language in any way, nor should make sense in that (b) should the indentation take more than: i) this many lines it would be overly big 11) legal numbering continues in the sub-sub clauses with the use of lower roman lettering and should flow below in a block iii) and continue the formatting on to the next line but be underneath the body of the the text and not begin directly below the number itself. In this example the text carries out to the right but I need it to wrap around underneath. Sorry its so wordy, need this to show the example. 2. Second Clause Heading 2.1 and so it continues thus I've found the examples for decimal numbering but they do not create a block out to the right of the number, and they carry on with multiple decimals rather than alpha and roman sub clauses.

  Received a message from Google Webmaster Tools: Over the last 24 hours, Googlebot encountered 2 errors while attempting to retrieve DNS information for your site. The overall error rate for DNS queries for your site is 40.0%. You can see more details about these errors in Webmaster Tools. Recommended action Contacted HostPapa and they deny that there is any issue with the site / server!!! Support in terms of what I can do to actually resolve this issue is non-existent!!!! The site is currently online. And I don't know much about DNS... so any advice about what I can do to resolve this problem would be much appreciated. Basically, the message from Google says that it is my webhosts fault, the message from my webhost (HostPapa) is... "Just tell google to crawl your site as there are no errors."

• Replace %26 in htaccess to %2526

  I would like htaccess to rewrite example.com/something_%26_else into example.com/something_%2526_else. I'm importing a bunch of pages that have ampersands in the title from Mediawiki. These are encoded as %26. Drupal, for various reasons, has decided double encode the url it to have it become %2526. I simply can't create the alisis within Drupal so I have to use htaccess This is what I have as my rule so far as RewriteRule ^w/([^%26]+)\%26(.*)$ w/$1\%2526$2 [R=301] I asked this question three months ago on stackexchange and was not able to get it working. I tried hiring a contractor for this but was unable to find one. So this my last ditch effort before I completely give up. I really appreciate the help. All the best, Patrick

• Apache htaccess results in files being downloaded instead of displayed

  So I had this "beautiful" website that did exactly what I wanted it to do. Then I shut down my PC, reboot and...the pages just download now instead of being displayed. I re-installed XAMPP and launched Apache again and I was able to identify the .htaccess file as the cause of the problem. Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} !^desktop RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} "android|blackberry|googlebot-mobile|iemobile|iphone|ipod|#opera mobile|palmos|webos" [NC] RewriteRule ^/?$ /mobile/index [L,R=302] RewriteRule ^/?$ /de/index [R] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.html Here is the problem I guess: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html -f RewriteRule ^(.*)$ $1.html This should make it possible to use /de/index instead of /de/index.html - but somehow it causes the page to download if I open localhost/de/index (but with localhost/de/index.html it works fine...). I'm using HTML Sites with SSI Elements on a Apache web server. The only other file that is different to the out-of-the-box ones is the httpd.conf, where I enabled SSI: AddType text/html .shtml AddHandler server-parsed .shtml AddHandler server-parsed .html AddHandler server-parsed .htm Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml Options +Includes So I hope there is somebody among you that can help me with this annoying problem as I'm quite desperate... for some reason, even without the problematic lines Chrome keeps downloading the files (even if I delete the .htaccess file), while IE and Opera display the pages. Edit: Now Opera also wants to download files (whether index.html or index are called).

• 1and1: Unable to host an external domain

  I'm sorry if this isn't the right place for this question, but I'm presently having difficulties with my hosting provider (1and1). Two weeks ago, two of my clients bought hosting from them on my recommendation, but as it turned out, 1and1 are having severe technical difficulties. Right now non of their hosting packages are able to accept ANY external domains. So either you pay the costs of transferring the registrar of your domain, or you use the ugly 1and1 domain name. Not any good for a hosting company of 1and1's reputation! They have been promising me for two weeks that they're going to fix the problem, but as you have probably guessed by now, that hasn't been the case. I would like to know if a) Anyone else is in the same boat as me, and b) If there are other comparably reputable hosting providers that I should consider moving to instead? Very disappointing! :( Note: This is for 1and1 in the UK. I imagine it isn't affecting users in other countries(?) Clarification: 1and1 are unable to accept ANY external domains. That means that even if you update your DNS details on your domain, their system cannot be updated to add your external domain to your account.

  Hello Webmasters, I am a Wordpress fan, and I'm now building a new site and I'm not sure which CMS can achieve what I'm trying to do. I am building a food blog network for a bunch of cities in the US, and I want to my city pages to be independently running blogs themselves. So basically... Home Page - Its own blog with its own users, talking about Food in general Dallas Page (child of home page) - Its own blog with its own users Chicago Page ..... so on and so forth. The web layout and design will be all the same, but just trying to achieve 25~50 independent blogs on one domain. How can I achieve this? I'm hoping that I don't have to install Wordpress into as many subdomains that I create... Thank you for your help in advance. -RP

• How to improve performance of map that loads new overlay images

  I have inherited a website to maintain that uses a html map overlaying a real map to link specific countries to specific pages. previously it loaded the default map image, then with some javascript it would change the image src to an image with that particular country in a different colour on mouseover and reset the image source back to the original image on mouse out to make maintenance (adding new countries) easier i made the initial map a background image by utilising some CSS for the div tag, and then created new images for each country which only had that countries hightlight so that the images remain fairly small. this works great but theres one issue which is particularly noticeable on slower internet connections when you hover over a country if you dont have the image file in your browser cache or downloaded it wont load the image unless you hover over another country and then back onto the first country - i guess this is due to the image having to manually be downloaded on first hover. My question: is it possible to force the load of these extra images AFTER the page and all the other assets have finished loading so that this behaviour is all but eliminated? the html code for the MAP is as follows: <div class="gtmap"><img id="Image-Maps_6200909211657061" src="<?php echo cdnhttpsCheck(); • Curious about a cached old domain

  I am a bit curious about my new domain. I had a domain before, let's say http://example.com/. Before expiration of that domain, I bought a new one with the name http://another-domain.com/. I uploaded all of my content on the second domain, but now when I search in Google about some query related to my http://another-domain.com/ site then I also find my old domain in the results. Will this give a duplicate content error for my new domain or any other kind of penalty from Google?

• Server Firewall preventing sending of email [migrated]

  The firewall on my VPS appears to be preventing my site from sending email. It was working fine until the end of last month. My hosting provider (Webfusion) has been next to useless. I am able to send email if I open INPUT ports 32768-65535, but not if these ports are closed. Why would this be? • Canonicalization of single, small pages like reviews or product categories [SEO]

  In general I pretty much like the idea of canonicalization. And in most cases, Google explains possible procedures in a clear way. For example: If I have duplicates because of parameters (eg: &sort=desc) it's clear to use the canonical for the site, provided the within the head-tag. However I'm wondering how to handle "small - no to say thin content - sites". What's my definition of a small site? An Example: On one of my main sites, we use a directory based url-structure. Let's see: example.com/ (root) example.com/category-abc/ example.com/category-abc/produkt-xy/ Moreover we provide on page, that includes all products example.com/all-categories/ (lists all products the same way as in the categories) In case of reviews, we use a similar structure: example.com/reviews/product-xy/ shows all review for one certain product example.com/reviews/product-xy/abc-your-product-is-great/ shows one certain review example.com/reviews/ shows all reviews for all products (latest first) Let's make it even more complicated: On every product site, there are the latest 2 reviews at the end of the page. So you see, a lot of potential duplicates. Q1: Should I create canonicals for a: example.com/category-abc/ to example.com/all-categories/ b: example.com/reviews/product-xy/abc-your-product-is-great/ to example.com/reviews/product-xy/ or to example.com/review/ or none of them? Q2: Can I link the collection of categories (all-categories/) and collection of all reviews (reviews/ and reviews/product-xy/) to the single category respectively to the single review. Example: example.com/reviews/ includes - let's say - 100 reviews. Can I somehow use a markup that tells search engines: "Hey, wait, you are now looking at a collection of 100 reviews - do not index this collection, you should rather prefer indexing every single review as a single page!". In HTML it might be something like that (which - of course - does not work, it's only to show you what I mean): <div class="review" rel="canonical" href="http://example.com/reviews/product-xz/abc-your-product-is-great/">HERE GOES THE REVIEW</div> Reason: I don't think it is a great user experience if the user searches for "your product is great" and lands on example.com/reviews/ instead of example.com/reviews/product-xy/abc-your-product-is-great/. On the first site, he will have to search and might stop because of frustration. The second result, however, might lead to a conversion. The same applies for categories. If the user is searching for category-Z, he might land on the all-categories page and he has to scroll down to the (last) category, to find what he searched for (Z). So what's best practice? • Magento - How to manage multiple base currencies and multiple payment gateways?

  I have two requirements to satisfy, I hope someone with more experience can help me sorting them out. Multiple Base Currencies My client wants to allow visitors to place orders in whatever currency they prefer, choosing from the ones he’ll configure. Magento only supports one Base Currency, and this is, obviously, not what I need. I checked the solution involving multiple websites, but I need a customer to be registered once and stay on the same website, not to switch from one to the other and have to register/log in on each. Manage multiple Payment Gateways per currency and per payment method This is another crucial requirement, and it’s tied to the first one. My client wants to “route” payments in different currencies to different accounts. He’ll thus have one for Euro, one for USD and one for GBP. Whenever a customer pays with one of these currencies, the payment gateway has to be chosen accordingly. Additionally, the gateway should be different depending on other rules. For example, if customer pays with a Debit Card, my client will have a payment gateway configured especially for it. If customer pays with MasterCard, the gateway will be different, and so on. The complication, in this case, arises from the fact that my client uses Realex Payments and, although it would be possible for him to open multiple accounts, the Realex module expects one single gateway. In a normal scenario, we would need up to six instead: Payment with Debit Card in Euro Payment with Credit Card in Euro Payment with Debit Card in US Dollars Payment with Credit Card in US Dollars Payment with Debit Card in GB Pounds Payment with Credit Card in GB Pounds This, of course, if he doesn’t decide to accept other payment methods, such as bank transfer, which would add one more gateway per currency. Is there a way to achieve the above in Magento? I never had such complicated requirements before, and I’m a bit lost. Thanks in advance for the help.

• Does Google submit HTML forms?

  I have a web page, say http://domain/purchase and in this page, I have a web form. User, on submitting this form (which has validation, both client-side and server side and won't be validated until fields are filled appropriately), would be redirected to another page, where (s)he can choose other things, and specify other settings and then purchase our product. Say the second page is http://domain/options. So, user comes to our site and visits http://domain/purchase, fills the form, submits it, and then would be redirected to the second page, http://doamin/options?parameter1=value1&parameter2=value2, which contains parameters from the first page. This is very common in passing parameters between web pages (or technically, between URLs). Now I was reviewing my website, and saw that Google had indexed some of my redirected web pages and URLs, like: http://domain/options?parameter1=value1&parameter2=value2 http://domain/options?parameter1=value3&parameter2=value4 http://domain/options?parameter1=value5&parameter2=value6 http://domain/options?parameter1=value7&parameter2=value8 http://domain/options?parameter1=value9&parameter2=value10 This means that Google Bot has visited our http://domain/purchase page, and has filled our form, and has submitted it, and was being redirected to the other URL, with corresponding parameters. This is the only way that makes sense to me. Does Google really fills forms? PS: All parameters are meaningful, meaning that they are not filled arbitrarily. For example, the phone parameter in indexed pages has correct phone numbers. How is it possible?

• Getting fingerprint from Apache certificate (combined with key)

  I have just created a certificate for my Apache SSL host using: make-ssl-cert /usr/share/ssl-cert/ssleay.cnf /etc/ssl/private/myhost.crt Now that is the correct way to get the fingerprint out of it? (So I can keep it in other place for visual comparison---in case I need to connect and really don't trust the network?) openssl sha1 /etc/ssl/private/myhost.crt returns different SHA1 than Opera tells me about the cert. Is this because it's combined with the key? (...or am I spoofed already? :-)).
