  • small & readable scheme interpreter in C++ ?

  • Fast data structure for small sets

    I'm in need for a data structure that can handle small sets (10-20 strings, at most 50, of varying length) very fast. False positives is ok, but false negatives are not. The last requirement makes bloom filters seem like a good fit, but I'm not sure about their speed, any other recommendations?

  • Microsoft Small Business Licensing Kick Start

    I seem to recall hearing at some point (I believe it was MIX09) that Microsoft has a licensing model of some sort where a business can consume licenses for up to two years, free of charge, until they reach a point where they are stable position and can pay their licensing at the end of two years. However, I can't find information regarding it online. I want to say that possibly stackoverflow used this licensing model to kick start their site. Is anyone familiar with this?

  • even small file upload stops activity on apache/rails

    on my rails(2.3.5) app(currently 50-70rpm, maximum response time around 0.7s), uploading even 700k file(using paperclip plugin) locks up the server for web requests for everyone for 2 minutes! (other apps on same server work normally) does anyone have a clue why that might be happening? i am using some mysql transactions which lock the database also if that might be an issue i read http://www.therailsway.com/2009/4/23/uploading-files but it couldn't be locking server for 2 minutes for a small file, could it?!

  • Accessing Erlang business layer via REST

I would like to avail of OTP features like distributed applications, etc. My question is how do I expose gen_server calls/casts to other applications? Obviously I could make RPC calls via language specific "bridges" like OTP.net or JInterface, but I want a consistent way to access it like REST.

As of today, it's clear that not even the US government and military can be sure that their data stays safely within their doors. Thereby I understand that my question probably instead should be written as "What is common sense to make it harder for employees to spread business critical information?" If anyone would want to spread information, they will find a way. That's the way life work and always has. If we make the scenario a bit more realistic by narrowing our workforce by assuming we only have regular John Does onboard and not Linux-loving sysadmins , what should be good precautions to at least make it harder for the employees to send business-critical information to the competition? As far as I can tell, there's a few obvious solutions that clearly has both pros and cons: Block services such as Dropbox and similar, preventing anyone to send gigabytes of data through the wire. Ensure that only files below a set size can be sent as email (?) Setup VLANs between departments to make it harder for kleptomaniacs and curious people to snoop around. Plug all removable media units - CD/DVD, Floppy drives and USB Make sure that no configurations to hardware can be made (?) Monitor network traffic for non-linear events (how?) What is realistic to do in a real world? How does big companies handle this? Sure, we can take the former employer to court and sue, but by then the damage has already been caused... Thanks a lot

  • Should a Trim method generally in the Data Access Layer or with in the Domain Layer?

    I'm dealing with a database that contains data with inconsistencies such as white leading and trailing white space. In general I see a lot of developers practice defensive coding by trimming almost all strings that come from the database that may have been entered by a user at some point. In my oppinoin it is better to do such formating before data is persisted so that it is done only once and then the data can be in a consistent and reliable state. Unfortunatley this is not the case however which leads me to the next best solution, using a Trim method. If I trim all data as part of my data access layer then I don't have to concern myself with defensive trimming within the business objects of my domain layer. If I instead put the trimming responsibility in my business objects, such as with set accessors of my C# properties, I should get the same net results however the trim will be operating on all values assigned to my business objects properties not just the ones that come from the inconsistent database. I guess as a somewhat philisophical question that may determine the answer I could ask "Should the domain later be responsible for defensive/coercive formatting of data?" Would it make sense to have a set accessor for a PhoneNumber property on a business object accept a unformatted or formatted string and then attempt to format it as required or should this responsibility be pushed to the presentation and data access layers leaving the domain layer more strict in the type of data that it will accept?   • What technologies are needed to be a freelance web developer / designer targeting small businesses?

    First off, I'm not looking for this answer: "learn PHP/MySQL, JQuery, HTML/CSS...." My background, I wear many hats, and do many things. Currently I manage investment accounts with a business partner who is also a friend. He happens to be attending business / law school perusing a joint JD and MBA. As a result, we're putting our into "coast", maintaining our current clients, but not acquiring more. Recently I've picked up some freelance graphic design / web development / online marketing side work (Photoshop, HTML/CSS, WordPress) through some personal networks. The work is enjoyable; now I'm thinking about expanding it into a larger business with these primary goals: augment my finances (I'm shooting for about $1,000-2,000 per mo.), learn new technologies, involve myself with meaningful work. As an entrepreneur I don't mind the aspects of running a business that hassle other freelancers... -- the marketing -- the billing -- etc. I'm considering targeting the small to middle market businesses and organizations where I can contribute in marketing, design, and development building projects from the ground up. Thus I'll have freedom to decide the specific technology (I won't have to work with an existing code base). What kinds of projects should I focus on? What technologies are a good fit for this style of work? For example: It might be fun to develop with Ruby on Rails. However, maybe a lot of projects would be rolling out e-commerce solutions. Thus, I should focus on PHP due to more shopping cart options, skipping ROR entirely.

  • Should this code/logic be included in Business Objects class or a separate class?

    I have created a small application which has a three tier architecture and I have business object classes to represent entities such as User, Orders, UserType etc. In these classes I have methods that are executed when the Constuctor method of, for example, User is called. These methods perform calculations and generate details that setup data for attributes that are part of each User object. Here is the structure for the project in Visual Studio: Here is some code from the business object class User.cs: Public Class User { public string Name { get; set; } public int RandomNumber { get; set; } etc public User { Name = GetName(); RandomNumber = GetRandomNumber(); } public string GetName() { .... return name; } public int GetRandomNumber() { ... return randomNumber; } } Should this logic be included in the Business Object classes or should it be included in a Utilities class of some kind? Or in the business rules?

  • Oracle Tutor: XPDL conversion (and why you should care)

    You may have noticed that the Oracle Business Process Converter feature in Tutor 14 supports "XPDL" conversion to Oracle Business Process Analysis Suite (BPA), Oracle Business Process Management Suite (BPM), and Oracle Tutor, and you may have briefly wondered "what is XPDL?" before you moved on to the Visio import feature (a very popular feature in Tutor 14). This posting is for those who do not yet understand (or care) about XPDL and process modeling. Many of us (and I'm including myself) have spent years working in the process definition arena: we've written procedures, designed systems and software to help others write procedures, and have been responsible for embedding policies and procedures into training material for employees. We've worked with tools such as Oracle Tutor, Microsoft Visio, Microsoft Word, and UPK. Most of us have never worked with "modeling tools" before, and we certainly never had to understand BPMN. It's a brave new world in this arena, and companies desperately need people with policy and procedural system expertise to be able to work with system analysts so there is a seamless transfer of knowledge from IT to employees. When working with applications, a picture is worth a thousand words, so eventually you're going to need to understand and be able to work with business process models. XPDL is an acronym for XML Process Definition Language, and it is an interchange format for business process models. It allows you to take a BPMN model that was developed in one workflow application such as BizAgi and import it into another workflow application or a true BPMN management system such as Oracle BPM. Specifically, the XPDL format contains the graphical information of a model as well as any executable information. By using a common format, models can be moved from a basic modeling application used by business owners to applications used by system architects. Over 80 applications support the XPDL format, including MetaStorm ProVision, BEA ALBPM, BizAgi, and Tibco. I mention these applications because we have provided XSLT mapping files specifically for these vendors. Oracle Business Process Converter was designed with user extensibility in mind, and thus users can add their own XML files so that additional XPDL models from other vendors can be converted to BPM, BPA, and Oracle Tutor. Instructions on how to add your own files can be found in Appendix 4 of the Oracle Business Converter manual. Let's take a visual look at how this works. Here is an example of a model devloped in BizAgi: This model can be created by the average business user without a large learning curve, and it's a good start for the system analyst who will be adding web services as well as for the business manager who manages the process described in the model. By exporting this model as XPDL, the information can be converted into Oracle BPA and Oracle BPM as well as converted to Oracle Tutor to become the framework for a procedure. Through this conversion feature, one graphic illustration of a business process can be used by a system analyst, business analyst, business manager, and employee, as seen below. Model Converted to Tutor Procedure Below is the task section of the procedure after conversion from an XPDL file. Model converted to BPA Model converted to BPM End users still want step by step instructions on how to perform their jobs, so procedures (Oracle Tutor) and application simulations (UPK) are still a critical piece of the solution. But IT professionals need graphic descriptions of how the applications work, regardless of whether there are any tasks involving humans. Now there is a way to convert procedures (Oracle Tutor docx files) and basic models (XPDL files) so that business managers and system analysts can share process information.     I have select: select v.accs, v.currency,v.amount,v.drcr_ind, count(*) qua,wm_concat(ids) npx_IDS, wm_concat(px_dtct) npx_DTCT from table v group by accs, currency, amount, drcr_ind but i get error ORA-06502: PL/SQL: : character string buffer too small if i'll remove one string, because sometimes (when v.accs= 3570) count(*) = 215 but when i try to skip using wm_concat for v.accs= 3570 for example this way: select v.accs, v.currency,v.amount,v.drcr_ind, count(*) qua,wm_concat(ids) npx_IDS, (case when v.accs = 3570 then wm_concat(px_dtct) else 'too many' end) npx_DTCT from table v group by accs, currency, amount, drcr_ind i still have the same error message. But why? How can i fix it? Thanx

  • System.Overflow Exception - int32 is too large or small

    I need a little advice. I've got windows service that runs at night. In my development environment, it runs without exception, but when I running it "installed on other machines", when I come in the morning, I'm welcomed with a System.Overflow exception that says that I've set an int32 to value that is too large or small. I've carefully combed the service's c# code, and I have try/catch statements around everything, that should catch any error and write it to a log without completely stopping my service with this overflow exception. But still, it occurs and stops the service. I'd appreciate any conceptual advice on how to pin point what's causing an error such as this.

  • ORA-22835 using JPA (Buffer too small)

    I am trying to persist an Entity with a @Lob annotated String field. The content of that fiels if bigger than the 40k buffer size limit. The first problem I had was related to the setString method used internally by the JPA implementation (Hibernate in my case) and the Oracle JDBC Driver. This problem was solved adding <property name="hibernate.connection.SetBigStringTryClob" value="true"/> to my persistence.xml file. Then, the error changed to a ORA-22835 error (the buffer is too small). ¿Is there any way that JPA solves this problem without going to a low-level implementation? ¿Any suggestions?

  • Using a DataSet instead of custom business entities in soa and n-tier architecture

    I’m working on a large and a high volume transactional enterprise application which has been designed using n-tire application architecture .And it was developed in the .NET platform utilizing C#,VB.NEt, Framework 3.5, ObjectDataSources, DataSet, WCF, asp.net update panel, JavaScript ,JSON, 3rd Party tools. The application is supposed to accomplish a really scalable / easily maintained / robust application / integrations, and to make sure that my services are created using a format that can be understood by other systems. The problem is, this application is about 70% complete but now I was wondering if the following would cause us future issues, I’m using a DataSet and a DataTable to (get /set) the data (form /to) the stored procedure in the database using the ObjectDataSources and was wondering if this would prevent my application from achieving the above goals. Actually, I am not anti-OO. I write lots of classes for different purposes, but I didn’t use the entity objects(custom business entities) instead of the previous way because I have a large database that may contain 50 tables and I was just afraid to create entities for each table and then in the future if I need to change the schema of the database, it might cause a huge affect on the application ?

  • NO-SQL reliable for small bussines app?

    I'm deciding between go for a NON-SQL engine or a regular SQL one for a document managment system for small bussines. I have experience with firebird/sql server and found a good track of reliability (specially with firebird). This market is full of crappy "servers" (clon-made PC, the mayority), cheap harddisk, rarely use of RAID or anything like that, some are in locations where a power-off is normal, some not have a UPS, etc... (I will include off-site auto-backup to external servers, but that no change the internal setup). (I know about end-user education about such proper setups, but is stupid depend on that, so stick to te point) From the desing point of view, a schema-less database is the way to go for my system, but, I worry if any of the actual solutions (MongoDb, Tokyo Cabinet, etc) are like firebird and survice crash, malfunctions & abuse so data corruption is very rare. The plan is store the office documents there & provide a central repository.

  • RegEx: Split String at Capitalized Letters and Non-capitalized letters to Create Small Cap Fonts

    So i've purposefully stayed away from RegEx as just looking at it kills me...ugh. But now I need it and could really use some help to do this in .NET (C# or VB.NET). I need to split a string based on capitalization or lack thereof. For example: I'm not upPercase "I" "'m not up" "P" "ercase" or FBI Agent Winters "FBI A" "gent " "W" "inters" The reason I'm doing this is to manually create small caps, in which non-capitalized strings will be sent to uppercase and their font size made 80% of the original font size. Appreciate any help that could be provided here.
