• Partition Bootable Flash Drive

  I created a bootable flash drive with Chromium OS installed on it. However, Chromium OS only needs about 4GB of space, and my flash drive is 8GB. I wanted to make the rest of the 4GB a FAT32 partition, but when I look at GParted, I have 12 different partitions on the flash drive with unallocated space scattered everywhere. I made the bootable flash drive with Ubuntu Linux's usb-imagecreator I run Ubuntu Linux 11.04 x86_64 and Windows 7 Professional x64 If any of you have experience with this, any help would be appreciated. • GlusterFS with CIFS, quotas and LDAP

  Has anyone had experience plugging GlusterFS and Openfiler together or something similar? Here is the motivation: Disk space on multiple server regrouped using GlusterFS Centralized access using LDAP/AD and quota management using Openfiler as the GlusterFS client SMB/CIFS server for easy sharing to multiple users on Mac and Windows I know I can have Gluster installed on Openfiler (rPath Linux) successfully but Openfiler seems to be very picky on what it can use as a shared drive. Mounting the Gluster volume inside an existing share does not seem to allow quotas with the mounted folder free space. If this is not possible, is there any alternative to give the same capabilities?

• RAID-0 problem with a Sony sporting a new HDD

  Sony Windows 7 PC. Originally had 2 x 300 Gb HDD. One HDD completely pancaked so have replaced with a new 500 Gb HDD. When both drives are connected the 300GB doesn't appear to be recognized as a 300Gb HDD as a separate entity. BIOS sees it but the operating system only sees a total of 465GB of HD space. When both disks are attached under disk management it shows one 465Gb as RAID 0 and the new drive as STxxxxxx 465Gb. My question I guess is what should I see in total HDD space and is this configured correctly as I thought I would see 2 separate drives 1x500Gb and 1x300Gb. My customer insisted that prior to the HDD crash he saw 2 drives both registering as 300Gb (a c: and d: drive).

  I have several Ubuntu Linux virtual machines running on VMware ESXi hosts that have all been allocated disks much larger than their required capacity. As space is now becoming an issue on our SAN, I'd like to investigate downsizing the allocated disk space on these machines. All systems will be completely backed up imaged before I begin making changes, and I will always retain a pristine backup in case the partition resizing does not work. Is there an easier way than the following procedure, or is their a better solution entirely? Shutdown and assign a second disk to the virtual machine Boot using the SystemRescueCD Use GParted to resize the original (source) partition, making it smaller Clone the new, smaller partition to the second disk Shutdown and remove initial disk from the virtual machine Reboot and force fsck to check the filesystem

• Resizing Partitions on Live RHEL/cPanel Server

  I've resized many partitions over the years on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X -- but always using a GUI. However, the time has come where the preset partition sizes my data center placed on my server aren't the right sizes and I need to resize a production server's disks. I could fiddle with it and probably do OK, but given that it is a production server, I wanted to get some advice about the right way to do this. What I would like to do is to add 6-10 GB each to /usr and /var, presumably taking the space from /home. As I think about how the disk is arranged, the best thought I've come up with is to reduce /home by 16 GB, say, and move /var to the spot freed up, then allocating /var's space to /usr. However, that would put /var at the far end of the disk, which seems less than idea, given that MySQL has all of its data on that partition. I'd love to take the space out of the closer end of /usr, but I assume that would take a very arduous (and perhaps risky) process of moving all of the data in /usr around. I seem to recall having such a process fail for me on a computer in the past. The other option might be to merge / and /usr since / is underutilized, though I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Do you have any suggestions both on the best reallocation plan and the commands to use to accomplish it? UPDATE: I should add -- here's the partition table. • sar command to generate only CPU utilization and network statistics in Linux

  I want to be able to generate the system activity report every 30 seconds or every minute and store in a file and use it for diagnostic purposes on my VM. So I give an output file for the sar command and read it using the "-f" option. But I only use the CPU utilization and network utilization part of the report and so rest is all that I don't want to save (waste the space in the disk to store these reports). Also the sar files that are generated are all binary. Is there a way to collect these stats for the CPU and network utilization alone? and so save almost 2/3rds the space on the disk?

• database on SSD: data only or the DBM program too?

  I plan on moving the data I use for statistical analysis (100-ish Gb) onto an SSD. The data is either sqlite single-file db's, or postgresql-managed data. The SSD is 240 Gb, 550 MB/s read and 520 MB/s write. Should I reserve that space for the data only, or would it be a good idea to install the operating system (Mac OS X) and the application directory (Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office and the like) on the SSD too? And would it make a substantial speed difference whether I also install the postgresql binaries on the SSD? I have plenty of other space (another 300Gb hard-drive, and a 1Tb one). Don't know the features of the non-SSD drives, though they're our standard equipment on all Macs, and they're definitely OK. Thanks.

  I have SBS 08 Standart. I have some Error in my Event Viewer with MSSQL$SBSMONITORING Event id 1105, 1827: Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.EventLog'.'PK_EventLog' in database 'SBSMonitoring' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup. CREATE DATABASE or ALTER DATABASE failed because the resulting cumulative database size would exceed your licensed limit of 4096 MB per database. I tried to schrink the database, worked for SBSMonitoring_log.LDF but nothing for the SBSMonitoring.mdf, still 4096MB. I don't know how to reinstall the monitoring. Thanks for your help.

• Weird behaviour/rendering of backspace in Terminal.app when SSHing into zsh

  Hi there, I just stumbled upon a weird problem. When I SSH into my server (centos, zsh) and I type some stuff and hit backspace It looks like a space - but internally it really deleted the characters. ls -l a Note that the space between land a is actually when I hit backspace. When I now hit return ls -a gets executed. This is only in zsh, in bash it works fine. Hope anyone has an idea what this is all about and how to fix this.

• Removing RAID on a DELL power-edge server

  We have a Dell Power-edge T110 server, with either a PERC S100 or S300 raid controller (I suspect S100), and 2 x 500GB SATA hard discs. These discs are running in RAID-1 configuration, (either 1 or 2 virtual discs), and on top of this, we have the C and D drives. As we are running low on disc space, we are looking at dropping the RAID to get some disc space back. Is it possible to split the discs back into 2 seperate hards discs that the OS can see, without losing all the data on the drives? Even better, would it be possible to split the D: drive, leaving the OS C: drive in RAID1 configuration?

• Boot Camp fails to create a Windows partition because it can't move files

  I'm running Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) on a mac with a 320 GB drive, 167GB free space, and I can't get Boot Camp running. The wizard starts creating the Windows partition, but fails with a message claiming it cannot move some files. The message suggests to back up my hard disk, reformat it, restore my files, and re-run Boot Camp wizard. The problem is: Though I do have backups (Time Machine), I don't feel like formatting my hard disk right now :-) I found a thread in some forum discussing this problem. The suggestion was to defragment my volume with iDefrag, and lots of people claimed that solved the issue. So I went ahead and got iDefrag 1.7.1, created a bootable DVD and chose the "compact" setting recommended before partitioning - but still no luck with Boot Camp! So how do I get this working? Fun note: last year, I briefly set up Boot Camp with 10.5, and it worked perfectly. Probably I did not use that much hard disk space back then...

• Installed over 4G RAM on 32-bit OS? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: 32-bit Windows Server address > 4GB RAM - How? I know that for 32-bit OS, the addressable memory space for each process is "4G" (maybe just 3G in user space...). If I have a 8G RAM, is it correct that all of the processes can still utilize (shared) these 8G memory but each of them are limited to a maximum 4G? Or the whole system only can see and utilize 4G out of 8G and thus having 8G RAM on a 32-bit OS is the same as having 4G RAM on it?

  There are so many choices that it's hard to know where to start. My requirements are these: Runs on Linux Most of the files will be between 5-9 MB in size. There will also be a significant number of small-ish jpgs (100px x 100px). All of the files need to be available over http. Redundancy -- ideally it would provide the space efficiency similar to RAID 5 of 75% (in RAID 5 this would be calculated thus: with 4 identical disks, 25% of the space is used for parity = 75% efficent) Must support several petabytes of data scalable runs on commodity hardware In addition, I look for these qualities, though they are not "requirements": Stable, mature file system Lots of momentum and support etc I would like some input as to which file system works best for the given requirements. Some people at my organization are leaning towards MogileFS, but I'm not convinced of the stability and momentum of that project. GlusterFS and Lustre, based on my limited research, appear to be better supported... Thoughts?

• HP Rapid Deployment - Change Data Store Path

  I am running HP Rapid Deployment (Altiris eXpress Deployment Server 6.9 - Build 164) on an inherited Windows Server 2003 SP2. I need to change the Data Store Path as the default is pointing to the C: drive and there is not enough space there. I would like to set it to the D: drive where there is plenty of space. Reading the documentation: Data store path: Specifies the path to stored packages and files and other DS functions (such as license verification). The default path is C:\Program files\Altiris\express\Deployment Server. Note: Do not use this setting to change the path to the Deployment Share. Modifying this setting does not automatically allow you to use another shared directory other than the express share. To change the Deployment Share shared directory, run a Custom install to establish another location for the Deployment Share. Is there any other way I can change the path as I do not have the install media?

  I've been trying to get Windows 7 to make a backup for a week or so. I'm backing up to a local NAS and I'm getting this error: Windows Backup: Troubleshooting Options Check your backup Windows Backup could not create a zip file. This could be because the drive that Windows is installed on does not have enough space or it could be a temporary error. Make sure you have at least 400 MB of free space and try again. Backup time: 2009-09-07 14:48 Backup location: \VANGELIS\Shared\Backup\lennon\ Error code: 0x81000015 My local hard disk has 290GB free and my NAS has 200GB free. Any ideas what might be wrong?

• Way to auto resize photos before uploaded to cloud service?

  I love using auto syncing services to have my photos taken with my smartphone stored on a cloud storage service. One problem though is that the photos are uploaded in high resolution and takes up a lot of space on the drive. I wonder if any one knows of a service/strategy to have the auto uploaded photo resized to have it occupy less space when auto stored? That is, without me having to take the photos with lesser quality, I still want photos taken with the highest quality since I may take a photo I really like.

  hi,.. Can somebody help in understanding how Lun Provisioning is done in clariion based on client requirement. Say, a client needs one 50 GB space on the host( for application) ,two -350 GBs ( for DB and stuff) on the same host and i have 4 raid groups with space of 200 GB in one 50 GB in second and 400 GB and 400GB in rest two all having 5 disks. And , I 'm using Raid 5 only. How do i provision keeping performance in mind( so that performance hit is not there)?..And i need to understand the concept of meta head as well. Please help me by elaborating the above scenario..I am learning to provision storage in non productive environment( b'fore going ahead and working on client prod server) and i have been learning a lot from SF ...I request the seniors here to help me understand it better. I wanted to extend my disk space, so I used mmc Disk managment to shrink a volume, but I can't extend it to the C drive because the extended volume in dropdown list of C is not clickable.   I'm looking for a script (preferably php) which I can use for to temporarily exchange files. I had such a script before (it was written in flash), but - damn - just can't find it anymore. Here the features I'm looking for: I have a logon, which allows me to create "upload spaces". for these "upload spaces" I define a time how long the space will be available for (until the files are deleted), and who can access it - in the means of typing in an email, and that user gets a link with the "online space", user ID and password. the other user then clicks on the link and uploads the file, and I get (preferably) an email should there be any file changes I get an email before the content gets deleted Now, 3 additional things: - it should be open- source - run on linux (preferably lamp) - no, I dont wanna use dropbox or similar :p Thanks in advance everybody, Cheers Chris
