• Setting up a VPN connection to Amazon VPC - routing

  I am having some real issues setting up a VPN between out office and AWS VPC. The "tunnels" appear to be up, however I don't know if they are configured correctly. The device I am using is a Netgear VPN Firewall - FVS336GV2 If you see in the attached config downloaded from VPC (#3 Tunnel Interface Configuration), it gives me some "inside" addresses for the tunnel. When setting up the IPsec tunnels do I use the inside tunnel IP's (e.g. 169.254.254.2/30) or do I use my internal network subnet (10.1.1.0/24) I have tried both, when I tried the local network (10.1.1.x) the tracert stops at the router. When I tried with the "inside" ips, the tracert to the amazon VPC (10.0.0.x) goes out over the internet. this all leads me to the next question, for this router, how do I set up stage #4, the static next hop? What are these seemingly random "inside" addresses and where did amazon generate them from? 169.254.254.x seems odd? With a device like this, is the VPN behind the firewall? I have tweaked any IP addresses below so that they are not "real". I am fully aware, this is probably badly worded. Please if there is any further info/screenshots that will help, let me know. The VGW will then send traffic towards your internal network over the tunnels. EDIT #1 After writing this post, I continued to fiddle and something started to work, just not very reliably. The local IPs to use when setting up the tunnels where indeed my network subnets. Which further confuses me over what these "inside" IP addresses are for. The problem is, results are not consistent what so ever. I can "sometimes" ping, I can "sometimes" RDP using the VPN. Sometimes, Tunnel 1 or Tunnel 2 can be up or down. When I came back into work today, Tunnel 1 was down, so I deleted it and re-created it from scratch. Now I cant ping anything, but Amazon AND the router are telling me tunnel 1/2 are fine. I guess the router/vpn hardware I have just isnt up to the job..... EDIT #2 Now Tunnel 1 is up, Tunnel 2 is down (I didn't change any settings) and I can ping/rdp again. • shrink size of ova file in virtualbox

  I've got an Ubuntu 64bit VM that I derived from a ~1GB ova file, I used it under VMware vSphere to install some more software on it and use the system against a few datasets that took some 2-3GB of space, but now that I deleted these big files, I was expecting that the newly generated ova file from it would also take about ~1.1GB of space, but instead is taking about 3GB. If I look at the details the .vmdk file in virtualbox, I see the following: Hart Disk: SATA Port 0 Type (Format): Normal (VMDK) Virtual Size: 8.00 GB Actual Size: 7.90 GB Details: Dynamically allocated storage Location: /somewhere/myVM-disk1.vmdk Attached To: myVM.virtualbox The size of the ova when I export this machine is ~3GB. Any ideas how I can shrink it?

• Problem starting Glassfish on a VPS

  I am attempting to install Glassfishv3 on my Ubuntu (8.04) VPS using Java 1.6. I initially tried starting the server using: asadmin start-domain and received the following error message: JVM failed to start: com.sun.enterprise.admin.launcher.GFLauncherException: The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Command start-domain failed. I attempted to run it again and received a different message: Waiting for DAS to start Error starting domain: domain1. The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. Command start-domain failed. If I run cat /proc/meminfo I get the following (all other values are 0kB): MemTotal: 1310720 kB MemFree: 1150668 kB LowTotal: 1310720 kB LowFree: 1150668 kB I have checked the contents of glassfish/glassfish/domains/domain1/config/domain.xml and the JVM setting is: -Xmx512m Any help on resolving this problem would be appreciated.

• Windows 7 Backup Disk Full

  What happens when a Windows 7 backup disk is full? I've been trying to find documentation on the issue without success. Does Windows 7 automatically delete the oldest backup files to free up space or does it force you manually pick and choose which files to delete? Time Machine automatically deletes the oldest copy of files, but as far as I can tell Windows 7 makes you manually choose. I keep getting a running out of disk space for backup notice on Windows 7 without any option to not warn me and just delete the oldest files automatically...

• MacBook Air 2010 Not letting me use Boot Camp

  Hi, I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my MBA, 2010. I open up Boot Camp and attempt to use it, but after the first screen it comes up with an error saying it can't install unless theirs 10GB of free disk space. Right now my hdd has 21.5 GB free. Disk Utility won't let me partition my drive either, so a manual install is out of the question. I need help! My original thoughts were that my disk needed to be defraged to get 10GB of contiguous space. Is this a possibility? This is kind of pissing me off because I really need to get Windows up on this Mac (as much as it dreads me to do it). Thanks!

• Backing up Information Store - Recovering to Different Information Store / RSG

  Hi All, I have a question on a situation, that hasn't yet arrisen but I wondered the possibilities and how we go about it. Currently we backup our Exchange 2003 Cluster with Backup exec. Currently it is set to backup the Microsoft Information Store on that server and all of the Mailbox Stores beneath it. We have previously used this in conjunction with a recovery storage group on the same server to recover lost mailboxes. However, due to space constrictions on that server ( a seperate issue that is being addressed in the very near future but outside of the scope of this question) we now don't have enough space on that server to do a recovery storage group type restore. Is it possible, to restore an information store, to a different server in the same administrative group (ie first)? By that I mean we have the following: Server1 | First Storage Group | Mailbox Store1/2/3 Could Mailbox Store 1 be restored to: Server2 | First Storage Group | Recovery Storage Group Both servers are under the same Administrative Group Currently for whatever reason ( mainly time) the mailboxes are not being backed up individually. • Grep a strange acirc character

  I have this character appearing in places in some files I have:  (if you can't see it or it looks like a question mark it's the Acirc character (capital A with a circumflex over it)) I simply want to grep replace this char with a space, however when I do this: grep --color -ri  myproject.php Putty gets very confused, as does grep. As I understand it there's probably a way to use an escaped hex code with grep.. does anyone know how? EDIT: The character is showing up on my web page as a weird <?>. The http headers for the page specify utf-8 as does the meta character set and I still see the strange character. In putty it appears as a space (putty also set to utf-8.) When I copy from vim and paste into grep it simply doesn't find it. Cheers, John

• Chinese IME - Shape toggle key won't save

  Hello everyone, Whenever I use Google IME or other IMEs like Sogou, I always encounter the same problem: half/full-width toggle. It's easy to set half-width by default in ime prefs, but toggle key is maintained by Windows, and here the fun begins. I use Win7 x64 Ultimate. Open the "Text services and input languages", go to "Advanced key settings". Here I see "Chinese (Simplified) IME - Shape Toggle" is set to "Shift+Space". When I try to change it, it appears as if it has changed, but if you click on "Apply" instead of "OK", or just open the window again, you can see it's still "Shift+Space". The same happens with disabling this toggle - disables and goes back on Apply or reopen. Not sure if it's a bug in Win7, so asking here. Please save me. :) Thanks!

• How to move 100mb hidden system reserved partition on Windows Server 2008 R2 to other drive?

  Hello! I have a server with two 1.5TB hard drives. I was going to install a Windows Server 2008 R2 and create software RAID1 using Windows Disk Management Utility. I instaleld Windows, open this console and that is what I see: http://i.imgur.com/KoC9a.png Setup program created a System Reserved Partition at my second HDD. I don't understand now, how can I create RAID1, because space, which supposed to be used for copy of disk C, now is used for this hidden partition. So is there any way now to create correct RAID1? May it is possible to move this partition to the Disk 0, where I have plenty of free space? Unfortunately I can't reinstall Windows and apply other options at the disk management step of the installation, because installation image is not longer connected to the server and I have no physical access to server, only remote desktop.

• Can I have both Windows dynamic disk partition and some other non-Windows partition on the same disk?

  When a basic Windows disk is converted to dynamic, Windows creates a partition that span the whole disk with the type of "Windows LVM" and manages its dynamic partitions within this space. So even if there is still free space on this disk, it is not visible to any other OS besides Windows. This happens with MBR and GPT disks both. I would like to share a Windows dynamic disk with some other OS. I have to have dynamic disks because I use Windows SoftRaid (mirrors). So, my questions are: Is there any way to "force" Windows to take up less then the whole disk when it converts a basic disk to dynamic? Will Windows tolerate having some other non-Windows partition on its dynamic disk?

• Robocopy to a drive connected to a wlan router fails

  I have a wireless router and an USB hard drive connected to it. Basic file access on the command line and Explorer works flawlessly after having set up some options on the router and mapping to some folders with net use k: \\ROUTER\Folder1 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes net use n: \\ROUTER\Folder2 /user:MYLAPTOP\Me password /persistent:yes Robocopy (and using SyncToy for that matter) to a network drive however fails: robocopy c:\Files k:\Backup /MIR /Z gives There is not enough space on the disk. 2010/01/05 09:52:11 ERROR 112 (0x00000070) Accessing Destination Directory N:\ Waiting 30 seconds... The error message is misleading: there is plenty of space on the disk and the folders I'm copying are small. The router is an ASUS WL-500gp with a standard firmware. I'd appreciate if someone would be able to explain what is causing the problem and, if possible, how to fix it.

• Issues with partitions WIN 7

  I was trying to make some space to install linux in my HP notebook. The computer had 4 partitions, I made space shrinking one and created a new one (facepalm) using the windows partitioning tool. It show me some warning message saying something about dynamic partitions, I ingored it, and went to the linux live CD. I installed linux in the new partition, after the installation completed it told me that GRUB cannot be installed I dont remember why. So now, it doesnt boot, neither windows nor linux. After google for a while I found the diskpart command, it gives me this info: DISKPART> list disk DISK ### Status -------- --------------- DISK 0 Invalid DISKPART> select disk 0 DISKPART> select partition Partition ### TYPE ------------- -------------- Partition 1 Dynamic Data Partition 2 Dynamic Data Partition 3 Dynamic Data Partition 4 Primary <- I think I put linux here Any idea whats happening?   Im looking for a reason why a person would use a Spanned volume rather than a Striped volume? If my understanding is correct Striped: Faster read/write speed than spanned, but I "assume" more wear+tear Spanned: No speed benefit like striped, but data is written sequentially and fills up Drive1 before filling up Drive2, so it saves on wear+tear Beyond that Im not sure if there is any other deciding factor on which to use. Definition found below: A striped volume uses the free space on more than one physical hard disk to create a bigger volume. Unlike a spanned volume, a striped volume writes across all volumes in the stripe in small blocks, distributing the load across the disks in the volume. The portions of disk used to create the volume need to be the same size; the size of the smallest free space included in the striped volume will determine.

• Accessing DHCP Client's vendor-encapsulated-options

  In the dhcpd.conf file for isc-dhcpd-V3.1.1, I have set up a vendor options space and defined several different options. I am able to use those definitions to send options from the server to the client in the vendor-encapsulated-options option (code 43). However, the client is also sending vendor options back to the server, in the same way, and I'd like to respond differently depending on the type and contents of the options. As far as I can tell, the the server isn't parsing the client's vendor-encapsulated-options at all - the option operator is just returning null. Is there a way to get the server to populate the options in the vendor space I've defined?

• Where is the Mac Divx Web Player 7 cache folder?

  Until recently, I was using Divx web player 1.4.2 because it seemed to be the least buggy. It was saving files in users/xxxxxx/movies/divx movies/temporary added files and was deleting them when the cache limit was reached. Now with 7, it's saving them alright cause I can watch my HD space go down, but I can't find them. And it's not respecting the cache limit size (mine is 4GB). The only way to clear up this space is a restart of the Mac. I'm running 10.6.8and Chrome. I've looked everywhere for the folder manually. Where is it?

• SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise database has unexpected 4GB database size limit

  I have SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise installed on a local Windows 7 x64 workstation. When I create a database on the server, it unexpectedly has a 4GB size limit (Database properties in SQL Server Management Studio say size = 3934.38 MB, space available = 47.13 MB). Unfortunately the database needs more than 4GB, and Enterprise is not supposed to have a practical maximum size. I confirmed the database is on the Enterprise server: SELECT @@VERSIONMicrosoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1600.1 (X64) Apr 2 2010 15:48:46 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation Enterprise Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7600: ) The database file is not set to restrict growth in SQL Server Management Studio, and there is plenty of hard drive space. The database was copied from SQL Express (which has a 4GB limit), but the same occurs with a fresh database creation. I've spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and Google-searching, to no avail. Any ideas?

• Odd UI bug in Xcode 4.3.2

  I have this annoying UI bug when using xCode 4.3.2. Every time i press the space bar, the whole text scroll view jumps. Does anyone know why this happens, or how to stop it? edit: is happens, for example, when I'm writing comments in the code and the sentence contains a space. IT can be anywhere on the document, even in the center, doesnt have to be at the bottom of the page. After it "jumps" it goes back to where it was.

• Windows Vista wont recognize SSD drive

  I just bought an SSD drive for my Vista (32bit) box (120GB OCZ Agility 3). Unfortunately windows vista won't display it in the my computer window, and generally wont let me work on it. However, the bios recognizes the SSD drive correctly, and when I go on the windows device manager the drive is there as well. I can see the device properties. On the volumes, when I click on populate, I have: Disk: Disk1 Type: Uknown Status: not initialized Partition style: not avaiable Unallocated space: 0MB Reserved space: 0MB Any ideas what could be wrong? • Alignment requirements: converting basic disk to dynamic disk in order to set up software RAID?

  On Windows 7 x64 Professional I am struggling to convert a basic disk to a dynamic one. Under Disk Management in the MMC the conversion is supposed to be initiated automatically, but it doesn't. My guess: because of using third-party partitioning tools there isn't enough space in front and after the partitions (system-reserved/boot + system volume) to store the required meta-data. When demoting a dynamic disk to a basic disk manually, I noticed that some space seems to be required before and after the partitions. What are the exact alignment requirements that allow the on-board tools in Windows to do the conversion?

• Deleting windows.edb and unchecking Indexing service lead to hard drive file records swapping

  I followed the instructions listed here:http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/18/turn-off-and-disable-search-indexing-service-in-windows-xp/ to free up space on hard drive by deleting the windows.edb indexing file... I also stopped windows search service as mentioned in the comments following the article. In addition to unchecking the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" check box on the properties dialog for the C:\ drive, I did the same for two usb connected hard drives (J:\ and I:\ ). I'm not sure why I did that, thought it might shrink the windows.edb file so I wouldn't have to delete it (which sounded a bit risky in my ears at the time). The file of course didn't shrink so I ended up deleting it and freeing up over 3 GB of space, yeehaw. However, as soon as I had done this I could not access the usb connected hard drives anymore. The error I got was "I:\photos is not accessible" "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable" when I tried to open the photos directory on I:\ Here is where I enter the twilight zone... I try disconnecting I:\ usb hard drive. But XP shows me that instead J:\ drive has disconnected and I:\ is still there. So I disconnect both drives and restart the computer. I then connect one drive, but it lists up the contents of the other drive on root level. I tried connecting the drives vice versa and the same thing happens. I try taking one of the hard drives to another computer and when I connect it there it lists up not its own contents but the contents of the other hard drive and gives the same error as above when I try and access any of the folders (even folders on the root that have the same name as folders on the other drive (e.g. J:\photos and I:\photos)??? And no, this is not a me mixing up my drive letters. Computer Manager - Disk management shows the same result as explorer: The drive size is correct (one is 500GB, the other is 640GB) but the drive name is of the opposite drive, as long as the contents. Also, one drive was full of data and the other almost empty but they incorrectly show their free space status of the other drive. Somehow the usb drives seem to have switched file tables, file records, boot records or something, extremely weird! Even weirder, if I try and create a text file or folder on this drive, it works fine, accessing them, saving, whatever, all good, but accessing any other data on the drive gives me an error. Does anyone have a clue what is going on and more importantly, how I can restore the correct folder listings to access my family photos ??? cheers, linni

• DFSR - What happens when one server gets maxed out?

  What happens when one server in a DFSR pool maxes out its disk space? I am at the very beginning of my research in DFS/R and this struck me. I plan on implementing this on one server with RAID1 (160GB) and on another server with a RAID5 (500GB). What happens when my 1st server with 160GB disks, run out of space? Will it spill over to the 500GB server? Is it advisable at all to even have the RAID1 server in the DFSR pool? Because the RAID1 server is also my Domain Controller. Hope you guys can help me out here (OS are Win2k3R2)

  Today I set up my first RAID ever. I decided to use RAID5, because I want as much space as possible, but I'm to afraid to use RAID0 because of possible data loss. I have 4 0,5TB drives and in RAID5 I have about 1,36TB usable. That's fine by me. Now I have a question. I'm thinking about purchasing a 2TB drive and can't figure out if it is possible to add it to this RAID (4*0,5TB + 1*2TB HDD) and how much space will I gain. • Why after deleting a 110+ GB collection, my /var/lib/mongodb directory still have same size?

  I am having some troubles with MongoDB and space usage. In particular, I once used to have a large collection of about 600 million records totaling 110+ GB on disk. Recently I decided to drop it because the data was outdated, to do so I dropped the collection through rockmongo's web interface. Accordingly, rockmongo doesn't show me the collection anymore, however my disk usage hasn't changed at all. Is there any clean operation which I am not aware of, which must be run in order to synchronize the database with database files on disk? I have tried to perform a "repair" but the system complains that there's not enough space on disk ... that's because it is all used by MongoDB.

• How to make Excel's "Auto Fit Row Height" feature actually auto fit the row height?

  For every generation of Excel I can remember (including 2010, which I'm using now), Excel's "Auto Size Row" features sometimes fails to actually auto size a row when the cell contains wrapped text. When it works properly, all the text is revealed and there is no additional space below the last line of text. When it fails, it adds extra space below the text. To make matters worse, what you see is not always what you get, i.e., text that appeared okay on screen gets cut off when it's printed. You also get different sizing depending on whether you are zoomed in/out or at actual size. Simple test case: Why is there a one-line gap after the text in cell A1 but in A2? (I double-checked that I applied Auto Fit Row Height to both rows. Zoom level is 100%.) Is there any known remedy for this without resorting to manually adjusting the row heights (which is not practical for more than a handful of rows)?

  I've been backing up my Vista box using Complete PC backup for quite a while now, and I was just wondering how it is that you remove old backups when your backup drive is to full for another backup. I recently received the following error: The backup did not complete successfully. An error occurred. The following information might help you resolve the error: There is not enough space to save the backup files. Free up disk space or change your backup settings. (0x81000005) I don't see anything in the settings for the backup to change this. Do I have to mount the backup to delete an old backup? If so where is that file located?
