• What should a conference newbie bring to make the most out of their first conference?

  I am planning to attend my first developer conference (Microsoft TechDays 2008 in Toronto). I have been looking around for suggestions so that I can prepare and make the most out of my first developer conference. Many articles make suggestions about asking questions, getting involved, being social. These are great! I am also wondering about physical items. I have seen many conference photos with most of the audience having their laptops. Are they just taking notes? Are they working on a problem during the session? • Completing install of ruby 1.9.3 with Ruby for for Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 -- problems with rvm pkg install openssl

I'm a complete novice with programming and I'm trying to get started with this Ruby on Rails tutorial (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ruby-on-rails-tutorial-book?version=3.2) I have been trying figure this out for about 7 hours now and since I don't have any hair left to pull out I'm turning to these hallowed pages. I have searched for solutions here again and again. System: Mac OS X 10.7.5 Leopard, Xcode 4.5.2 I installed homebrew and have updated it multiple times I used homebrew to install rvm and have updated it multiple times I installed git The standard ruby on the system (checking with $ ruby -v) is 1.8.7 My problem is that every time I try to use rvm to install a new version of Ruby ($ rvm install 1.9.3) I get the following error: Ruby (and needed base gems) for your selection will be installed shortly. • What's a simple way to web-ify my command-line daemon?

  Suppose I have a simple daemon type script that I run on my webserver. I run it in a terminal, with gnu screen, so I can keep an eye on it. That works fine (incidentally, I use this trick). But now suppose I'd like to make a web page where I can keep an eye on my script's output. What's the easiest way to do that? Notes: This is mainly for myself and a couple co-hackers so if websockets is the answer and it only works on Chrome or something, that's acceptable. But I'm hoping for a simpler, quick-and-dirty solution, and especially a general way to quickly do this for any script I might want to keep an eye on from a browswer.

  Guidelines for code-golf on SO We've all seen phone numbers that are put into words: 1-800-BUY-MORE, etc. What is the shortest amount of code you can write that will produce all the possible combinations of words for a 7 digit US phone number. Input will be a seven digit integer (or string, if that is simpler), and assume that the input is properly formed. Output will be a list of seven character strings that For instance, the number 428-5246 would produce GATJAGM GATJAGN GATJAGO GATJAHM GATJAHN GATJAHO and so on..... Winning criteria will be code from any language with the fewest characters that produce every possible letter combination. Additional Notes: To make it more interesting, words can be formed only by using the letters on a North American Classic Key Pad phone with three letters per number as defined here.That means that Z and Q are excluded. For the number '1', put a space. For the number '0', put a hyphen '-' Bonus points awarded for recognizing output as real English words. Okay, not really. ;-)

  I'm reviewing my notes for my course on theory of computation and I'm having trouble understanding how to complete a certain proof. Here is the question: A = {0^n 1^m 0^n | n>=1, m>=1} Prove that A is not regular. It's pretty obvious that the pumping lemma has to be used for this. So, we have |vy| = 1 |vxy| <= p (p being the pumping length, = 1) uv^ixy^iz exists in A for all i = 0 Trying to think of the correct string to choose seems a bit iffy for this. I was thinking 0^p 1^q 0^p, but I don't know if I can obscurely make a q, and since there is no bound on u, this could make things unruly.. So, how would one go about this?

On first invocation of a URL the user is prompted with the typical https browser "security alert" popup, on selecting "Yes" the display of the PDF fails. • Why can't I see any data in the Google App Engine *Development* Console?

  I run my google app engine application in one of two ways... Directly by using the application from http://localhost:8080 Or execute unit tests from http://localhost:8080/test When I create entities by using the application directly, the data is visible in the Development Console (dataStore view). However, when I execute the unit tests... even if they succeed and I can put() and get() data, the data does not show in the dataStore view. Any idea why I can't see my data? Even though it is there? Notes: I use GAEUnit for unit tests. the data stored mostly consists of StringProperties(). I use Python and run Django on top of the GAE, don't know if that matters.

• Is the UIDatePicker really the best iPhone UI mechanism for selecting dates?

  Hello! I'm diving into iPhone/iPad development and I'm trying to find an elegant mechanism for allowing the user to select dates. It seems to me that a calendar control would be the best way to go, but I don't see one in anywhere in the SDK. All all I see is this overblown, the-price-is-right-looking DatePicker control. Is this the only control that comes with UIKit for allowing the user to select dates? What about the calendar that the Notes app uses? Also, I should note I'm really trying to avoid using 3rd party code frameworks that have little or no documentation, because I'm new to all this and sufficient documentation is a must at this point. • What happened to the Windows "Midi Mapper"

  I wrote a windows program many years ago, which created music by sending notes to the "midi mapper" (and thence to the midi-synth on my sound-card) Today, I have a soft-synth which, allegedly accepts midi information, so I'd assume it should be possible to use today's equivalent of a midi-mapper to route the midi output from my program to the soft-synth. There's clearly no longer a midi-mapper application in windows, but my program still works (on XP) in that it drives the built-in soundcard synth, so there must be some sort of midi handling layer in windows. How can I get at this? And maybe redirect the midi to the soft-synth?

• Handling ID's with db4o and ASP.NET MVC2

  So, i'm looking at the TekPub sample for ASP.NET MVC2 (http://mvcstarter.codeplex.com/) using DB4o and there are a bunch of templates to create controllers etc, the generated code looks like: public ActionResult Details(int id) { var item = _session.Single<Account>(x=>x.ID == id); return View(item); } Now, my understanding is that using DB4o or a simliar object database that ID's are not required, so how/what exactly do I pass to enable this kind of templated code to function? UPDATE: Both answers were useful, I have modifed the templates to use GUID as the ID. I will add any relevant code/notes here once I see how it works out.

• Image Data via Ajax - how can I display the image on the Page

  I am creating a Domino Document via AJAX that contains a photo. I am able to get the base64 image data back to the server in a Notes Domino Document. Data is stored in a Richtext (textarea) field as "data:image/jpeg;base64,/9j/4AAQSkZJRgABAQAAAQABAAD/2wBDAFA..........." - (this goes on for several lines) I am trying to display on the Domino Webpage using passthru tag <<image id= "pic1" >> in the onLoad event of the Form i try to shove the data into the image element using this code: //Photo Stuff alert(document.forms[0].photo1.value); document.getElementById("pic1").src = document.forms[0].photo1.value; The alert is showing the data. • IIS 6 session timing out a lot quicker than expected

  I am working with an web application that has its sessions timing out a lot quicker than expected. We expected a timeout of 15 minutes but it's timing out at 3-4 minutes. Info about environment: IIS6 classic ASP / COM+ app timeout OK on current PROD, much quicker in dev / QA environments We already disabled app pool recycling, and even put IIS in isolation mode - no effect HTTP err log doesn't display any lines when session times out We've done a close comparison of PROD and DEV / QA environments, and given we use virtual machines on all of them, settings should be preserved. I tried to find IIS blog notes from David Wang but many of them now have HTTP 404 errors, and I don't know what else to do. Please help! At the very least, is there a way to get IIS to log every time a session expires? At the very least some means of logging / debugging IIS would be useful. Thanks in advance.

• Git: removing selected commits from repository

  I would like to remove selected commits from a linear commit tree, so that the commits do not show in the commit log. My commit tree looks something like: R--A--B--C--D--E--HEAD I would like to remove the B and C commits. So that they do not show in the commit log, but changes from A to D should be preserved. Maybe by introducing a single commit, so that B and C become BC and the tree looks like. R--A--BC--D--E--HEAD Or, ideally, after A comes D directly. D' representing changes from A to B, B to C and C to D. R--A--D'--E--HEAD Is this possible? if yes, how? Some notes that might be helpful: This is a fairly new project so has no branches as of now, hence no merges as well. Side note: It's a personal project, so no, I'm not trying to destroy any evidence :)

What I am looking for is a resource that provides homework style problems to do and has the answers downloadable so I can check my solution against the "official" solution. So for example instead of the notepad tutorial it would be: "Build an application that you can create, edit, delete notes, ...etc.". Ideally the "official" solution would have some explanation as to why they built it the way they did.   I've written code that can make a phone dial a number from a function call, that's done and dusted. What I would like to achieve is adding a Dial button to each phone number field on the forms in Dynamics CRM. Eventually this could also create a new phone record fill in the basic details and show it to the user to enter notes and an outcome for the phone call, and perhaps some other workflow bits to schedule the next call. Can I put a custom control on a standard form in place of the standard control. I'm assuming it would have to be an IFrame to an asp.net page, that pulls in the record id, and the field name, looks up the number to show in a text box, and passes the number to the DialNumber function. Hey presto... I assume its not going to be that easy... Has anyone tried this before, what's the process, what are the gotchas?

  I'm kind of new to VB.net, and since I just finished a C# course, the lack of parentheses creates a lot of confusion on how to write certain combinations of operators. The C# equivalent of the line I am trying to reproduce in VB would be like this : if ( (a == 0 && b != null) || (a == 1 && c != null) ) I'm have no idea how to write this in VB, I've tried many combinations of And, Or, AndAlso, OrElse, etc. but I can't achieve the desired result. I can't find any clear example of C# v.s. VB.net comparison on operators, and the notes I have aren't helpful either. Can someone help me figure this out?

• Chaining jQuery animations using recursion crashes browser

  Here's the basic idea of what I'm trying to do: Set the innerHTML of a DIV to some value X Animate the DIV When the animation finishes, change the value of X and repeat N times If I do this in a loop, what ends up happening is, because the animations occur asynchronously, the loop finishes and the DIV is set to its final value before the animations have had a chance to run for each value of X. As this question notes, the best way to solve this problem is to make a recursive call to the function in the callback handler for the animation. This way the value of the DIV doesn't change until the animation of the previous value is complete. This works perfectly...to a point. If I animate a bunch of these DIVs at the same time, my browser gets overwhelmed and crashes. Too much recursion. Can anyone think of a way to do this without using recursion?

  Different pages of my site have different js needs (plugins mainly), some need a lightbox, some dont, some need a carousel, some dont etc. With regards to pageloading speed should i option 1 - reference each js file when it is needed: so one page might have: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/jquery.easydrag.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="js/colorbox/jquery.colorbox-min.js"></script> and another have: <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/carousel/scrollable.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="st_wd_assets/js/typewatch.js"></script> option 2 - combine and compress into one site_wide.js file: so each page would reference: <script type="text/javascript" src="js/site_wide.js"></script> there would be unused selectors/event listeners though, how bad is this? I would include any plugin notes/accreditations at the top of the site_wide.js file

BUT, it sends a message in the output window: PHPUnit is required in order to generate controller test stubs. How do I get Netbeans to automatically create a class with phpunit testing? • How to make GhostScript PS2PDF stop subsetting fonts

  I am using the ps2pdf14 utility that ships with GhostScript, and I am having a problem with fonts. It does not seem to matter what instructions I pass to the command, it insists on subsetting any fonts it finds in the source document. e.g -dPDFSETTINGS#/prepress -dEmbedAllFonts#true -dSubsetFonts#false -dMaxSubsetPct#0 Note that the # is because the command is running on windows, it is the same as =. If anyone has any idea how to tell ps2pdf not to subset fonts, I would be very greatful. Thanks --------------------------Notes ------------------------------------------ The source file is a pdf containing embedded fonts, so it is the fonts already embedded in the source file, that I need to prevent being subset in the destination file. Currently all source file embedded fonts are subset, in some cases this is not apparent from the font name, i.e it contains no hash, and appears at first glance to be the full font, however the widths array has been subset in all cases.

  Each time I compile my Qt project after modifying my qss stylesheet file, the modifications aren't taken into account, unless I rebuild everything. Any idea on a workaround for this, so that I don't have to wait 5 minutes each time I change my qss ? Notes: I use Qt 4.8, and my stylsheet is declared in a resource file (qrc). EDIT: As suggested by Luca Carlon, when a qss is reference in the project through a .qrc file, the changes in the qss don't affect the qrc, and the compiler ignores it. To avoid that, I added a Custom Build Step to my project: before the qmake step! calls a .bat file without any argument the .bat contains the real command copy /b files.qrc +,,
