• OTN Developer Days (Review) - San Juan, PR - April 29, 2010

  A quick update on the San Juan, PR event. First off it was a great success with the Keynote audience of 200+. Mickey Ralat, Managing Director Oracle Caribbean, kicked off the event with a quick introduction followed by me delivering the Keynote Message - The Fusion Development Platform which is the first session in the regular OTN DD events that we run in North America. Following this session was a partner, SDT, basically marketing their services which covers the Oracle stack and then following was a very brief presentation on APEX. After this we broke out into the various tracks of Java, (APEX) DB SQL Developer, .NET on Oracle. After the breakout we ran the following sessions in the Java track: Developing with JDBC, UCP, and Java in Database, Rich Internet Applications in Web 2.0, Development Made Simple Without Coding: Developing Reusable Business Components. As expected with the various tracks, we ended up with 50 - 70 in the various sessions within the JAVA track and the audience was very impressed with the power of JDeveloper/ADF 11g and we got a number of questions from licensing cost to upgrading / integrating from Forms. As for the Forms questions, I fielded a number of them and for those I couldn't, I pointed them towards Grants resources which seemed to suffice. They were all, for the most part, unaware of the recent 11.1.1.3 release which occurred only a couple of days prior to the event. The indication was that they were going to download it and use it for the lab that was included on the DVD which we did not have the time for them to even start on. • Friend of Red Gate

  Friend of Red Gate I recently joined the friend of Red Gate program.   I am very honored to be included in this group.    This program is a big part of Red Gates community outreach.   If you are not familiar with Red Gate, I urge you to check them out.    They have some wonderful tools for the SQL Server community and the DotNet community.    They are also building up some tools for Exchange and Oracle. I was invited to join this program primarliy because of my work with Simple Talk and promoting one of their newest products, Reflector. Reflector is a wonderful tool.   I doubt that anyone who has ever used it would argue that point. Red Gate did a wonderful job taking over the support of Reflector.   I know many people had their doubts.    The initial release under Red Gate should set those fears to rest.   I was very impressed with how their developers interacted with their users during the preview phase! Red Gate is also a good partner for the community.    They activly support the community, sponsoring Code Camps, sponsoring User Groups, supporting the Forums, etc. And their tools are pretty amazing as well.

• Nice take on Open Source

  I just revisited the “Micro Framework”- Microsoft’s bootable runtime, essentially an OS that allows managed code to run on small 32bit CPUs, even without Memory Management.  Things are happening http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/bb267253.aspx Abstract The Microsoft .NET Micro Framework is a bootable runtime module that brings the advantages of .NET programming to devices too resource-constrained to run other Microsoft embedded platforms. The benefits of developing with the .NET Micro Framework include the C# programming language, a managed execution environment, a substantial subset of the .NET libraries, and Visual Studio™ deployment and debugging. In this white paper we explain why the .NET Micro Framework is an ideal choice for embedded development and provide technical details of the platform’s Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) and Common Language Runtime (CLR). “Micro Framework” is an interesting product, it is very low cost, like zero. And it is largely community controlled under the Apache License.  A partner network is building, and the application environment is .NET. I have been following this for some time, and the community open source approach seems to be working.  There are new features/packages emerging, for example an F# programming language (ARGH! I am still wresting with VB and C#). Anyway, what I found most interesting was a port to Tron.  Tron is a very popular Japanese open source intuitive.  It is a very real time, very compact kernel, and is, like the Micro Framework, ‘free as beer’.  One limit on MF was it was not real time.  But the merger with Tron may eliminate that problem.  Certainly, if I were dealing with a consumer product with quantities in the millions (like a SmartGrid device, or a toy) I would seriously consider something out of this technology pool.

• BizTalk 2009 - The Community ODBC Adapter: Installation

  I have previsouly detailed the installation of MySQL, the configuration of MySQL and the installation of the ODBC Data Connector for MySQL.  The reason I needed to install and configure these servers was to provide a test environment for a BizTalk Server 2009 solution I am working on where BizTalk will be querying and populating a MySQL database. To do this I then needed to install and add the Community ODBC adapter from Two Connect: "The Community BizTalk Adapter for ODBC is based on the code that was first made available on GotDotNet a few years ago. TwoConnect has refreshed this code, added an installer, and tested it against the latest BizTalk editions. We are releasing the updates back to the BizTalk developer, user and partner community as part of our ongoing community intitiatives. This is the second adapter package that TwoConnect makes available to the community after the very succesful release of the BizTalk WSE 3 adapter a couple of years ago. This adapter is useful in all ODBC based integration scenarios. The following are the new features added and fixes made to the old code base on GotDotNet." Detailed below are the installation instructions for this adapter.  Downloading and running the installer will load up the splash screen. Next you need to select the installation location for the adapter. You then need to confirm the installation following which you will be shown the installation progress. Assuming all has gone well you should see the installation complete screen. Once the installation has completed successfully you will then need to add the adapter to your BizTalk Server.  To do this open the BizTalk Administration console, expand the Platform Settings and right click on Adapters then select New\Adapter. You should then be able to select the ODBC adapter and choose the display name for the adapter. This adapter will then be shown in the BizTalk Administration console. • Configuring Request-Reply in JMSAdapter

  Request-Reply is a new feature in 11g JMSAdapter that helps you achieve the following:Allows you to combine Request and Reply in a single step. In the prior releases of the Oracle SOA Suite, you would require to configure two distinct adapters. Performs automatic correlation without you needing to configure BPEL "correlation sets". This would work seamlessly in Mediator and BPMN as well.In order to configure the JMSAdapter Request-Reply, please follow these steps:1) Drag and drop a JMSAdapter onto the "External References" swim lane in your composite editor. 2) Enter default values for the first few screens in the JMS Adapter wizard till you hit the screen where the wizard prompts you to enter the operation name. Select "Request-Reply" as the "Operation Type" and Asynchronous as "Operation Name".3) Select the Request and Reply queues in the following screens of the wizard. The message will be en-queued in the "Request" queue and the reply will be returned in the "Reply" queue. The reason I have used such a selector is that the back-end system that reads from the request queue and generates the response in the response queue actually generates more than one response and hence I must use a filter to exclude the unwanted responses.4) Select the message schema for request as well as response. 5) Add an <invoke> activity in BPEL corresponding to the JMS Adapter partner link. Please note that I am setting an additional header as my third-party application requires this.6) Add a <receive> activity just after the <invoke> and select the "Reply" operation. Please make sure that the "Create Instance" option is unchecked.Your completed BPEL process will something like this:

• TRADACOMS Support in B2B

  TRADACOMS is an initial standard for EDI. Predominantly used in the retail sector of United Kingdom. This is similar to EDIFACT messaging system, involving ecs file for translation and validation of messages. The slight difference between EDIFACT and TRADACOMS is, 1. TRADACOMS is a simpler version than EDIFACT 2. There is no Functional Acknowledgment in TRADACOMS 3. Since it is just a business message to be sent to the trading partner, the various reference numbers at STX, BAT, MHD level need not be persisted in B2B as there is no Business logic gets derived out of this. Considering this, in AS11 B2B, this can be handled out of the box using Positional Flat file document plugin. Since STX, BAT segments which define the envelope details , and part of transaction, has to be sent from the back end application itself as there is no Document protocol parameters defined in B2B. These would include some of the identifiers like SenderCode, SenderName, RecipientCode, RecipientName, reference numbers. Additionally the batching in this case be achieved by sending all the messages of a batch in a single xml from backend application, containing total number of messages in Batch as part of EOB (Batch trailer )segment. In the case of inbound scenario, we can identify the document based on start position and end position of the incoming document. However, there is a plan to identify the incoming document based on Tradacom standard instead of start/end position. Please email to [email protected] if you need a working sample.

• Is Openness at the heart of the EU Digital Agenda?

  At OpenForum Europe Summit 2010, to be held in Brussels, Autoworld, 11 Parc du Cinquantenaire on Thursday 10 June 2010, a number of global speakers will discuss whether it indeed provides an open digital market as a catalyst for economic growth and if it will deliver a truly open e-government and digital citizenship (see Summit 2010). In 2008, OpenForum Europe, a not-for-profit champion of openness through open standards, hosted one of the most cited speeches by Neelie Kroes, then Commissioner of Competition. Her forward-looking speech on openness and interoperability as a way to improve the competitiveness of ICT markets set the EU on a path to eradicate lock-in forever. On the two-year anniversary of that event, Vice President Kroes, now the first-ever Commissioner of the Digital Agenda, is set to outline her plans for delivering on that vision. Much excitement surrounds open standards, given that Kroes is a staunch believer. The EU's Digital Agenda promises IT standardization reform in Europe and vows to recognize global standards development organizations (fora/consortia) by 2010. However, she avoided the term "open standards" in her new strategy. Markets are, of course, asking why she is keeping her cards tight on this crucial issue. Following her speech, Professor Yochai Benkler, award-winning author of "The Wealth of Networks", and Professor Nigel Shadbolt, appointed by the UK Government to work alongside Sir Tim Berners-Lee to help transform public access to UK Government information join dozens of speakers in the quest to analyse, entertain and challenge European IT policy, people, and documents. Speakers at OFE Summit 2010 include David Drummond, Senior VP Corporate Development and Chief Legal Officer, Google; Michael Karasick, VP Technology and Strategy, IBM; Don Deutsch, Vice President, Standards Strategy and Architecture for Oracle Corp; Thomas Vinje, Partner Clifford Chance; Jerry Fishenden, Director, Centre for Policy Research, and Rishab Ghosh, head, collaborative creativity group, UNU-MERIT, Maastricht (see speakers). Will openness stay at the heart of EU Digital Agenda? Only time will show.

• SüdLeasing reduziert mit e-Lease auf SOA-Basis Verwaltungskosten um über 1,5 Mio. Euro

  Mit dem SüdLeasing Projekt e-Lease (electronic leasing process) wurde laut Dr. Buchacker eine maßgeschneiderte, exzellent ausbaufähige „Zukunftsplattform" geschaffen. Die Geschäftsprozesse des Unternehmens wurden gemeinsam mit Oracle und dem langjährigen Oracle Partner PROMATIS auf der neuen Plattform einheitlich abgebildet und verschlankt. Dabei wurden auch bestehende Legacy-Systeme einbezogen. Heute werden auf dieser Oracle basierten service-orientierten Architektur (SOA) die betrieblichen Abläufe automatisiert, optimiert und flexibel weiterentwickelt. Zunächst stand das Finanzdienstleistungsunternehmen vor der Herausforderung unternehmensweit die Durchlaufzeiten, die Kooperation und den Service durch Business Process Streamlining zu verbessern. Neben Einsparungen bei Aktenordnern, Ablagematerialien und bei der Archivierung sollten vor allem die Abteilungen „Markt" und „Marktfolge" mittels einer durchgängigen IT-Unterstützung der Arbeitsabläufe besser ineinander greifen. Parallel dazu beabsichtigte man durch sukzessive Entlastung der Mitarbeiter in den drei Haupt- und Bearbeitungsstandorten sowie in den 19 Vertriebsniederlassungen zusätzliche Kapazitäten zu gewinnen. Bereits kurz nach der Einführung von e-Lease in 2008 hatten sich die Verwaltungskosten in der SüdLeasing Zentrale um rund 1,5 Mio. Euro reduziert.
