• OutOfMemory during paging

  Hi I am using ObjectDataSource, ListView, CustomPaging If the total number of rows is too big, I got OutOfMemory exception, it seems that it caused by some array, I don't get it, because total number of rows should never make any array to be filled with elements, the page size do!! • Too many false positives when using FxCop.

  Dear ladies and sirs. We are using FxCop and it generates too many false positives to our liking. For instance, if a private method is invoked using reflection, then this method is reported as potentially unused - understandable and we suppress this warning explicitly using the SuppressMessage attribute. However, FxCop reports the same warning for the methods invoked from that method, which we already suppressed warnings about. This is stupid and generates too much noise. There are also false reports on member variables used in these methods. Also, there are problems with generic types (I even saw something about it in MS connect). Anyway, I am wondering if anyone knows whether Microsoft is going to upgrade FxCop, because it seems to be stuck in version 1.36 for a long time. BTW, I we do not use StyleCop, because it is way too picky and we just do not have the time to examine all the zillion messages in order to suppress them all. Besides, the StyleCop report seem to augment, rather than replace FxCop. Maybe anyone can suggest a good alternative to FxCop? We are using VS2008 pro. Thanks.

• Shared classes are build under VS2008 only but not under MSBuild.

  We share our classes between silverlight 3.0 client and server as is it described here. Everything works fine under Visual Studio 2008 only. There are 4 workarounds there, I tried first 3 of them and those did not worked out. The 4-th workaround is not the acceptable solution. Any thoughts how to build the solution?

• WordPerfect programmers refusing to use anything but assembler

  There is a version (popularised by Joel Spolsky) attributing the demise of WordPerfect to a refusal of its programmers to use anything but assembler that led to delay of the first WPwin release and as result eventually to losing the all important battle with Microsoft. There are a few references to programming work being done using assembler in the autobiographical book "Almost Perfect" by W. E. Pete Peterson who used to have a major influence at running the corporation. But these references go back to early 80's when WordPerfect was trying to gain a significant market share by defeating WordStar and not early nineties when the battle with MS took place. I am looking for a second independent source to confirm the assumption. Maybe someone who worked for WordPerfect Corporation at a time, who was close to the company, or had a chance to see the source could clarify the issue. Your help is much appreciated, thanks! Please note that this question is not about any other theories or reasons behind WordPerfect demise. I really just need to clarify whether they used assembler as a primary language for WPwin and (as a bonus really) whether there were discussions held within the corporation about assembler being the right choice. Concisely: Did WPCorp use assembler as a primary language for WPwin? Were discussions held at a time amongst WP Corp staff about assembler being the right choice (was it management or programmers decision)?

• WCF Discovery finds endpoint but host is "localhost"

  I am trying to use the Discovery feature in WCF using http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd456783(v=VS.100).aspx as a starting point. It works fine on my machine, but then I wanted to run the service on a different machine. The service was discovered properly but the hostname of the found service is always "localhost" which is of course not much use.   I want to create a resource file for Singaporean English (en-sg) named "shopping.en-sg.resx" in App_GlobalResources folder. I get error during compilation. Error 1 The namespace 'Resources' already contains a definition for 'shopping' c:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files\web\2cd6afe9\737b0a13\App_GlobalResources.vomuzavz.1.cs 26 After searching Google, I discover that "en-sg" is not a default culture and I have to create custom culture for it. I don't know the detailed steps of this. What should I do to create the culture and remove the compilation error?   I am writing a web application that grabs the http response headers from multiple sites (with RollingCurl.php) then stores it in an array and at the end outputs it in json format. Since some sites do redirects to new locations, $info (array) in “request_callback” function always has an url ($info[‘url’]) where the requested url was redirect.to, and it’s quite expected. • Does HttpListener work well on Mono?

  Hi everyone. I'm looking to write a small web service to run on a small Linux box. I prefer to code in C#, so I'm looking to use Mono. I don't want the overhead of running a full web server or Mono's version of ASP.NET. I'm thinking of having a single process with a thread dealing with each client connection. Shared memory between threads instead of a database. I've read a little on Microsoft's version of HttpListener and how it works with the Http.sys driver. Alas, Mono's documentation on this class is just the automated class interface with no discussion of how it works under the hood. (Linux doesn't have Http.sys, so I imagine it's implemented substantially differently.) Could anyone point me towards some resources discussing this module please? Some time ago, I asked this question, interested in keeping a long conversation open with lots of back-and-forth. I had settled on designing my own ad-hoc protocol, but people I spoke to really wanted a REST interface, even at the cost of the "Okay, send your command now" signal. So, I wondered about running ASP.NET on a Linux/Mono server, but stumbled upon HttpListener. This seemed ideal, as each "conversation" could run in a separate thread. The thread that calls HttpListener in a loop can look for which thread each incomming connection is for and pass the reference to that thread. The alternative for an ASP.NET driven service, would be to have the ASPX code pick up the state from a database, and write back the new state when it finishes. Yes, it would work, but that's a lot of overhead.

  Summary: I'm trying to write a text string to a column of type varchar(max) using ODBC and SQL Server 2005. It fails if the length of the string is greater than 8000. Help! I have some C++ code that uses ODBC (SQL Native Client) to write a text string to a table. If I change the column from, say, varchar(100) to varchar(max) and try to write a string with length greater than 8000, the write fails with the following error [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]String data, right truncation So, can anyone advise me on if this can be done, and how? So the question is : How do I center the gridview data when I use DisplayMemberBinding to bind the data to the gridview? Thanks in advance.

There are several possible reasons: The file name or path does not exist The file is being used by another program The workbook you are trying to save has the same name as a... I know the path is correct, I also know that the file is not open anywhere else. The workbook has the same name as the one I'm trying to save over but it should just overwrite. • VB .Net - Reflection: Reflected Method from a loaded Assembly executes before calling method. Why?

  When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it. It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text. • WPD on XP, Vista, and 7 (need to transfer photo and video files)

  I need to transfer files (still photos and videos) from any portable device that a user may connect (still camera, video camera, mobile phone, etc.) I don't need to worry about plain storage devices as these have drive letters. And I only care about existing files, I don't care about live video, preview video, taking new pictures, etc. I originally tried WIA, which works great except it can not transfer video files. So then I tried WPD, following along with dimeby8's tutorial: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/dimeby8/archive/2006/09/27/774259.aspx I haven't gotten the transfer working yet (I'm converting it over to C#), but I can at least see the device and enumerate the files in Win7. In XP I get nothing. It's pointed out in this thread that WPD won't enumerate devices on XP (see Lisa O [MSFT]'s post): http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowssdk/thread/56459945-b757-45df-8c9f-4ebdbbb18a2c So WIA is out because it won't do video. And WPD is out because it won't do XP. Has anyone gotten this to work? Am I missing something simple here? Thanks.

• NTLM Authentication fails when behind Proxy server

  Hi All, I've seen a number of post about consuming Web Services from behind a proxy server, but none that seams to address this problem. I'm building a desktop application, using Java, JAX-WS in NetBeans. I have a working prototype, that can query the server for authentication mode, successfully authenticate and retrieve a list of web site. However, if I run the same app from a network that is behind a proxy server (the proxy does not require authentication), then I'm running into trouble. I know from the Java docs that On Microsoft Windows platforms, NTLM authentication attempts to acquire the user credentials from the system without prompting the user's authenticator object. If these credentials are not accepted by the server then the user's authenticator will be called. Given that my Authentication code is called only ones, and only as the 5th attempt, it appears as if the connection is dropped when behind the proxy server before my Authentication object is used. Is there any way I can control the behavior of Authentication module, to not have it use the system credentials?   Hello Experts, Application : I am working on one mid-large size application which will be used as a product, we need to decide on our DAL layer. Application UI is in Silverlight and DAL layer is going to be behind service layer. We are also moving ahead with domain model, so our DB tables and domain classes are not having same structure. So patterns like Data Mapper and Repository will definitely come into picture. I need to design DAL Layer considering below mentioned factors in priority manner Speed of Development with above average performance Maintenance Future support and stability of the technology Performance Limitation : 1) As we need to strictly go ahead with microsoft, we can not use NHibernate or any other ORM except EF 4.0 2) We can use any code generation tool (Should be Open source or very cheap) but it should only generate code in .Net, so there would not be any licensing issue on per copy basis. Questions I read so many articles about EF 4.0, on outset it looks like that it is still lacking in features from NHibernate but it is considerably better then EF 1.0 So, Do you people feel that we should go ahead with EF 4.0 or we should stick to ADO .Net and use any code geneartion tool like code smith or any other you feel best Also i need to answer questions like what time it will take to port application from EF 4.0 to ADO .Net if in future we stuck up with EF 4.0 for some features or we are having serious performance issue. In reverse case if we go ahead and choose ADO .Net then what time it will take to swith to EF 4.0 Lastly..as i was going through the article i found the code only approach (with POCO classes) seems to be best suited for our requirement as switching is really easy from one technology to other. • Accessing an excel file throws OleDbException but keeps handle on file

  Really odd that I'd get an oledbexception but turns out that the file's handle is still with the original file. I've been searching through google and keep finding the same problem but no solutions. Connection String: "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" + "Data Source=" + filePath + ";" + "Extended Properties=Excel 8.0;"; Note that it works on every other file except a particular excel file. Exception: System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException: No error information available: E_UNEXPECTED(0x8000FFFF). Am I able to do what I want or do I need four different functions for each server (i.e., xmlHttpServer01, xmlHttpServer02, xmlHttpServer03, xmlHttpServer04)? • getting a tiled image collection on the iPad (deepzoom)

  I have a set of tiled image collections created via microsoft's deep zoom composer, and a silverlight app that currently consumes them for display via MultiScaleImage - it's all working pretty well - I'd just like to get some experience with iPad programming and have a couple of ideas for some ipad applications. All my ideas rely on me being able to display/manipulate these tiled image sets (on the iPad). I just picked up a iMac to facilitate this. I'm not seeing any objective-c / cocoa-touch libraries for this though, so am assuming I will have to roll my own. (Saw the seadragon ajax component, which is pretty slick, but I'm dealing with collections here, which it doesn't support. I would also like to roll this as a native app just to get the experience). The only open source project I found for displaying/manipulating the tiled image sets was Openzoom -a flash component. I'm not to familiar with actionscript either (python, java, c#, and c are the only languages I have really used), but briefly inspecting the code I didn't really have any issues with it and can probably use it for hints on how to swap the tiles in and out, etc.. But, as I'm pretty new to obj-c/cocoa-touch, some pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. 1) Are there any other projects out there I am missing, or is openzoom my best bet for some reference? 2) Should I be trying to do this display in the UIKit framework, or should I do it as an OpenGL display? 3) Any other suggestions/pointers that I didn't think to ask.

• Game of life in F# with accelerator
