  Quote from the 31 Oct 2009 TechNet article "Learn more about system image backup": During the first backup, the backup engine scans the source drive and copies only blocks that contain data into a .vhd file stored on the target, creating a compact view of the source drive. The next time a system image is created, only new and changed data is written to the .vhd file, and old data on the same block is moved out of the VHD and into the shadow copy storage area. Volume Shadow Copy Service is used to compute the changed data between backups, as well as to handle the process of moving the old data out to the shadow copy area on the target. This approach makes the backup fast (since only changed blocks are backed up) and efficient (since data is stored in a compact manner). When restoring the image, blocks will be restored to their original locations on the source disk. If you want to restore from an older backup, the engine reads from the shadow copy area and restores the appropriate blocks. For the last days, a daily system backup of drive C: to drive E: has been scheduled and run by Windows 7 Backup and Restore. Drive C: currently holds 233 GB of data, which fits comfortably on drive E:, a 1 TB drive, with 727 GB of free space remaining. How do I access the previous version of a VHD? • Remote mouse pointer not visible in VNC

  I used VNC desktops as a kind of collaboration server, as shared planning and pair programming environment for a long time. Now my latest iteration uses a KVM guest running Fedora 17 "Beefy Miracle", the Cinnamon desktop environment and an X11VNC server. The X11VNC server is automatically started with the desktop environment using the following command: x11vnc -localhost -many -shared -display :0 -bg My problem is that depending on the VNC client, the mouse pointer of the remote system which is shown through VNC is not synchronized to my client. I really need this, so I can see what my partner is doing on the desktop. When using Vinagre 3.2.1 on Ubuntu Oneiric Ocelot (11.10) or Vinagre 2.3.0.3 on Debian Squeeze (6.0) and I don't have my local mouse pointer inside the VNC view, I cannot see the mouse pointer of my remote system, nor its movement. When using TightVNC on Windows 7, I can recognize a mouse pointer trace for very short amounts of time after moving the mouse, but it is not clearly visible. Using UltraVNC on Windows 7 the mouse pointer is clearly visible all the time. With Gnome 2 I never had any problems with remote pointer synchronization, using exactly the same clients. I suspect this could have something to do with Cinnamon's dependency on 3D acceleration. On the other hand, it doesn't change anything to start Cinnamon's fallback environment Cinnamon 2D. Update: Same effect when I use Gnome 3.

• Pages load in brower fine, but 404 not found reported for the page during the GET on all pages except index

  I believe this question is more suited to serverfault (please correct me if not). This issue appears very similar to this question (except there are no 301 Moved Permanently for any pages). The domain is yorkshirebadges.co.uk. For example, loading yorkshirebadges.co.uk or yorkshirebadges.co.uk/index.php reports no 404s during network inspection. But every other page (/contact.php, /products.php) report a not found. Mod_rewrite is being used on the site, I checked this out but didn't see any obvious errors. • Help, my CentOS servers keep going down , No route to host after a random uptime

  Hello , I have a couple of Centos linux servers, that have a very simple task, they run nginx + fastcgi for php , and some NFS mounts between them, readonly They have some RPC commands to start some downloading processes with wget, nothing fancy , from a main server, but their behavior is very unstable, they simply go down, we tried to monitor ram , processor usage, even network connections, they don't load up so much, max network connections up to... 250 max, 15% processor usage and memory , well, doesn't even fill up, 2.5GB from 8GB max , I have no ideea why can a linux server go down like that, they aren't even public servers, no domain names installed no public serving, for sites. The only thing that I've discovered was that if i didn't restart the network service every couple of hours or so... the servers were becoming very slow, starting apps very slow, but not repoting a high usage of resources...Maybe Centos doesn't free the timeout connections, or something like that...It's based on Red Hat right? I'm not a linux expert , but I'm sure that there are a few guys out there that can easily have an answer to this , or even have some leads to what i can do ... I haven't installed snort, or other things to view if we have some DOS attacks, still the scheduled script that restarts the network each hour should put the system back online, and it doesn't.... • No LAN and SMB access, and Explorer not responsive, when using a second connection

  I apologize if this is a duplicate question, I know that there are several questions about multiple connection (LAN + LAN and LAN + dialup) but I haven't been able to find one that fits my scenario. I'm still using Windows XP on my corporate laptop, and I'm connected to the corporate LAN via Ethernet. The LAN NIC has a public IP address, although not accessible externally, obtained via the corporate DNS server. This connection is firewalled and requires a proxy to access Internet. To access Internet sites blocked by the corporate firewall, I use my smartphone via USB tethering. It is seen as a new LAN interface, and I get a private IP address (class 192.168..). There are two problems: The LAN is not accessible, as the default gateway goes to the tethering NIC. I'd like to solve this, but I can live with it. My PC becomes unresponsive if I use Windows Explorer to view local files, or even when I open the start menu. I guess that this is caused by attemps to connect to a mapped network drive. But I disabled the "Client for Microsoft Networks" in the tethering NIC. Why the system still hangs? Of course if I disable the Ethernet NIC, Explorer stops hanging. • terminal-window viewer for tab-delimited files in *nix?

  I work with a lot of tab-delimited data files, with varying columns of uncertain length. Typically, the way people view these files is to bring them down from the server to their Windows or Mac machine, and then open them up in Excel. This is certainly fully-featured, allowing filtering and other nice options. But sometimes, you just want to look at something quickly on the command line. I wrote a bare-bones utility to display the first<n>lines of a file like so: --- line 1 --- 1:{header-1} 2:{header-2} 3:... --- line 2 --- 1:{data-1} 2:{data-2} 3:... This is, obviously, very lame, but it's enough to pipe through grep, or figure out which header columns to use "cut -f" on. Is there a *nix-based viewer for a terminal session which will display rows and columns of a tab-delimited file and let you move the viewing window over the file, or otherwise look at data? I don't want to write this myself; instead, I'd just make a reformatter which would replace tabs with spaces for padding so I could open the file up in emacs and see aligned columns. But if there's already a tool out there to do something like this, that'd be great! (Or, I could just live with Excel.)

• Implementing an isolated guest WLAN via IPSec VPN on Windows

  We are attempting to set up a guest WLAN network that is isolated from the rest of our network. This is proving difficult due to a couple of technical reasons. My first choice was to use a separate VLAN, on which our Firewall's handy WLAN port would handle DHCP, DNS and the network isolation we need. Unfortunately, due to the fact that our main office and our Internet connection itself are in different locations connected by way of a Metro Ethernet connection, I'm at the mercy of our ISP for VLAN transit. They won't pass a second VLAN between our two sites. And my hardware doesn't support 802.1ad "Q-in-Q", which would also solve this problem. So I can't use the VLAN method for isolation. At least not without spending money. As our Firewall can handle IPSec site-to-site VPN connections, I hope it is possible to connect a Server 2008R2 (standard) server I have in the office location to the WLAN and provide gateway services to the firewall. Thusly: Unfortunately, I don't know if it is possible to connect the two this way. The firewall has a pretty flexible IPSec/L2TP implementation (I've used it to connect iPads in the wild), but is neither Kerberized or supports NTLM. The Connection Security Rules view on the Windows server seems to get close to what I think needs to be done, but I'm failing on figuring out how to get it to do what I need it to do. Is this even possible, or do I need to pursue alternate solution?

• Reference entire excel 2007 sheet to another sheet

  I have one sheet with 100 rows of data. I have a second sheet that will use the same data but with filters applied. In fact, I will have a dozen sheets, each with different filters. My goal is to have references from the every sheet to the first so that prior to filtering, they all contain exactly the same data. This way I only have to modify one sheet and all sheets will reflect the changes. The purpose is to create external links from word to excel to display specific rows, but there appears to be a limitation to linking where it displays absolutely everything that you see on the sheet itself (and each view must be different). I can manually reference the first cell and then drag the black box to easily expand it to the required number of rows, but that would require me to go into each sheet and drag the black box again whenever I add new entries to the master copy. Is there an easy way to do this? Note that the issue is the same as Easy way for users to update linked documents Excel 2007, except this time I am using a different approach. Solutions to both would be welcome.

• Web browsing through SSH tunnel gets stuck/clogged

  I use tools like Tunnelier to log into my home Tomato router through SSH, and then use it as a proxy for web browsing, tunnel for Remote Desktop/VNC, etc. Most days it works great, but some days every page I try to view gets stuck, like the tunnel is clogged. I load a web page and it seems to be loading, then stops, with the little loading icon spinning and nothing happening. I refresh the page, I reboot the router, I reboot the other computers on my home network and turn off any bandwidth-hogging services on them, I've turned on QoS on the router to prioritize SSH. I don't understand what's getting stuck. Rebooting or disconnecting/reconnecting the SSH tunnel improves responsiveness for a minute, but then it gets clogged again. It also seems to help if I don't do anything on the tunnel for a few minutes, then it will be responsive for a bit and then get clogged again. Trying to open a terminal console from Tunnelier is also unresponsive, so it's not just a web browsing problem. Likewise, connecting to http://192.168.1.1 in the browser (to the router's web config through its own tunnel) is also slow/laggy/halting. The realtime bandwidth reported by the router is nowhere near my DSL connection's limits, though it does show big spikes during the laggy times, and the connection is responsive when it shows low bandwidths. How do I troubleshoot something like this?

• How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? (or which player supports frame interpolation?)

  I use mpc-hc to play videos on Win7 x64. With the default settings (#1), video playback is great most of the time. But for panning shots, playback is not smooth. I stepped through the video frame by frame and found that the panning movement is smooth (e.g. each frame shifts horizontally by 10 pixels), so the problem is how the 23.976 fps video is interpolated to 60Hz. The judder looks like what would be caused by a "2:3 pulldown", where the frames are played unevenly like: frame 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, etc (#2) Using "optimal renderer settings" (#3) instead of the default disables the Aero theme and causes tearing. Setting my LCD display to 50Hz may have improved the judder slightly (but I can't really tell). My display does not support 24Hz or 48Hz, and forcing them in the Nvidia control panel gives blurry screen. I've tried other video players (VLC and KMPlayer), the ReClock Directshow Filter, video files from different sources (#4), turning on/off DXVA, and a computer with a different GPU, but the judder in the playback is similar. None of them solved the problem. So, how can I play 23.976 or 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? I think a video player could make the video smoother by doing linear interpolation, such as: 1. 100% frame 1 2. 60% frame 1 + 40% frame 2 3. 20% frame 1 + 80% frame 2 4. 80% frame 2 + 20% frame 3 5. 40% frame 2 + 60% frame 3 6. 100% frame 3 7. 60% frame 3 + 40% frame 4 .. etc Can any existing video player do this? • Transcoding media server streaming to the iPhone

  I have a huge collection of videos in different formats, but with one thing in common: They are not playable on an iPhone (or iPod Touch). Instead of complaining about Apple's IMHO broken world view ("there are no video formats but quicktime and mp4"), I wonder if there's a solution out there that allows streaming these different videos to the iPhone. This means that the source media needs to be transcoded on the fly. I already tried a few solutions out there, but with varying success: PS3 Media Server kind of worked, but only once and only for one single file. TVersity is said to work, but it requires UAC to be disabled and I don't see any need for this. The solution I'm looking for should run on Windows 2008 Server or Linux. I just can't believe that there's nothing out there that would allow me to stream my huge video collection on my iPhone (we're talking Wifi here, not 3G). After looking at the answers provided and after retrying TVersity without much success, I gave Orb another try and while the web interface failed to work for me, the iPhone Application (I tried the free one at first) actually worked flawlessly. And not only that, it also manages to convert the streams on-the-fly, so you don't have to wait for the transcoding process to finish before playback starts. On my 2.26 Ghz MacMini Server, this worked even with 1080p material. For Windows 2008 Server users out there: Remember to install the Desktop Experience Feature in the Server Manager if you intend this to work. Of all the stuff I had a look at, this really provided instant-success - even though I'm now probably sending the contents of my harddrive to orb's central server (sigh)

• Known USB 2.0 devices don't install driver, but must be manually forced

  When a known USB 2.0 device is plugged in and detected, it doesn't install the driver correctly but shows a Code 28 error and lists the device under "Other Devices" in Device Manager. When view properties of this device , it shows the following status; The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There is no driver selected for the device information set or element. To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver. When updating the driver manually and selecting the appropriate driver Windows doesn't believes it's the correct driver, but you can force the installation and it works! The other condition the driver will auto-install is when the same USB device is plugged into a USB 3.0 port. Power related issues are not also causing this as I have tried vi a Docking station, USB hub. etc.. Devices tried; Jabra Headset USB-Mass Storage Device (flash disk and ext HD) MS Wireless Keyboard & Mouse USB Ethernet controller (USB-MAC controller) This is on a laptop part of a Domain with Windows 7 Ent 7601, I am logged in as a local administrator. • Server 2003 R2 - II6- granting access to website via IP with subnet range

  We are trying to allow for a client to connect to our website. By default we are Denying all access except for those with the specified IPs we have configured to run, everything before has just been a single IP address. However now we must implement a range of IPs and rather than input thousands of records we want to use the group of computer options in the Grant Access page. However we have it configured to work off of the IP 72.21.192.0 with a subnet mask of 255.255.224.0 They are unable to connect. Looking over our IIS logs they are receiving a 302 error which is the same behavior anyone should get whom is unauthorized to view the page in question. The IP address coming in is 72.21.217.2, so it should be well within the rage of acceptable IP addresses. I'm at a loss as everything I look up tells me to do what we are doing. So any insight would be appreciated. Especially because I'm a software guy not hardware. Thanks!

• Windows Vista/7 dropping Mac Server share points

  My Windows Vista and Windows 7 clients are having problems maintaining access to SMB shares on a Mac server. The initial connection to the server appears to be OK, as the Windows clients can see all of the server share points. However, the client randomly drops a couple of the server share points although the clients can still see the server. For example. If I have the following share points on the Mac server: Share A Share B Share C Share D Share E The Windows client can see these shares most of the time and can access them most of the time. But randomly a couple of the shares will just get dropped or go missing from the Windows client's ability to view them so I end up with something like: Share B Share D Share E All the share points are established int the same way with the same permission settings. My Mac OSX Server is set up with the following for SMB: SMB sharing enabled Standalone Server Workgroup of `CORPORATE` Allow Guest Access = YES Client connections limit = 100 Authentication: NTLMv2 & Kerberos and NTLM Code Page is Latin US (437) This is a workgroup master browser WINS registration is set to Enable WINS server (tried with setting off) Enable virtual share points for homes YES I noticed in my SMB file service log that the clients appear to connect OK, but I get the following error which implies a reset by either the server or the client: /SourceCache/samba/samba-187.9/samba/source/lib/util_sock.c:read_data(534) read_data: read failure for 4 bytes to client 192.168.0.99. = Connection reset by peer I am a bit stumped as to a direction to turn to try and get this to resolve. Continued attempts to access the server from the client will reconnect to the share points, but they inevitably get dropped again in the near future. Any and all help much appreciated.

• Problem with running a script at startup as root?

  Hi The main question: Is there a way I can run 'completely' one of my script when ubuntu's desktop appears no matter if root , administrator, desktop user or an unprivileged user logged in? What does the script do? The script mounts a partition, looks for a file in that partition and finally on the basis of that file a decision of copying a partition to another partition is made. That copying is done via dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda5 When does the script run finely? Script runs smoothly when I run it from the terminal by sudo ./my_copying_script This command asks me for the password of currently logged in user. I enter the password and the script starts working. When does the script NOT run finely? I want to run the script at startup. I set it a startup program by using the Startup Applications utility of Ubuntu. Script ran at startup but exited at the dd command returing following error: dd: opening '/dev/sda2': Permission denied On edk's suggestion I set the owner of my_copying_script as root and set the SUID. Now the permissions of my_copying_script are (-rwsr-sr-x). edk's point of view was that once I set the suid, the startup program will run with the permissions of its owner. I did that but the same /dev/sda2 permission denied error came up. I then prefixed the dd with sudo as mentioned below sudo dd if=/dev/sda2 of=/dev/sda5 but this returned following error: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified In other words the mounting failed. If I run the script using sudo ./myProgram i don't face this problem and the drive gets mounted successfully.

• Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration.

  I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (not entirely free, and more than I am looking for,) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo.) • MySQL ADO.NET Connector & MSSQL Integration Services

  Here I am, day three... attempting to sync a data view on a Windows Vista box (64 bit) running MSSQL 2012 and Visual Studio 2010. Sanity is slipping and hunger for progress fills my attention. I went through hell trying to get the MySQL ODBC drivers to get the job but to no avail...everyone seems to be lost and all the threads I can find are solutions that do not work for me. The problem: System DSN's not being seen by SSIS. SSIS DSN Not Showing as ODBC Data Source I make the decision to try out the ADO.NET connector...and to my surprise it is actually in the selection list in data sources in SSIS. So I take off running to create a Data Flow Task, create an ADO.NET Source (a local MSSQL DB)...all is good as usual. Then I move swiftly to creating a ADO.NET Destination, enter my credentials...wow, I am selecting a database finally on my linux server! Happy thinking that I finally have figured a way to get the job done. Then I move to mappings...nope, something is wrong...I am getting an error that hurts my eyes: Pipeline component has returned HRESULT error code 0xC0208457 from a a method call. Error at Data Flow Task [ADO NET Destination [81]]: Failed to get properties of external columns. The table name you entered may not exist or you do not have SELECT permission on the table object and an alternative attempt to get column properties through connection has failed. Detailed error messages are" You have an error in your SQL syntax check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near "database".tablename" at line 1. The descriptor files on path C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DTS\ProviderDescriptors\ does not contain schema information for connection of type MySQL.Data.MySqlClient.MySqlConnection. So it looks like it can't the information and therefore I cannot map the tables properly. Any ideas on this would be ultra helpful...thanks in advance to All!

• Windows 7: L10N mechanics

  I have a localized version of Windows 7. I can't figure out where windows gets the names for files and directories on the system. For instance, consider the following (default) files. > cd C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures > dir Chrysanthemum.jpg Desert.jpg ... When I view these files on the default file explorer I see these names: Crisantemo.jpg Deserto.jpg ... This seems to imply that each file can be somehow assigned a localized name somewhere. However I cannot figure out how. Would appreciate if someone could shed some light on this issue. Thanks. UPDATE EDIT: The desktop.ini file in the folder containing Chrysanthemum.jpg contains the following entries. The .dll files used to translate the various resources are unfortunately not human-readable and I have no clue as to how they could be generated for other files created by the user to be translated, but they serve the purpose, and solve the mystery which lead to the post. • Replacing HD in an MacOS 10.6.8 server caused all shares to fail

  I'm hoping someone might have a helpful suggestion about this problem. We have 2 MacOSX servers available for file sharing. (quad Xeons - 2GB RAM, both 10.6.8), No.1 is an Open Directory Master with 50+ user accounts, No.2 has only 2 local accounts (/local/Default) and looks at the OD Master for all user accounts (/LDAPv3/10.x.x.20/) Both servers have 3 internal HD's, The boot volume with only Server OS and minimal Apps. A 'DataShare' HD (500GB) and a backup drive (500GB). After upgrading the DataShare HD in Server No.2 from a small internal HD (500GB) to larger capacity (2TB) drive, users are unable to connect to shares on Server No.2. Users get an error "There are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server" The process I followed was to use Carbon Copy Cloner to create an exact copy of the original data drive (keeps all ownership data, UID, permissions, last edit date and time). Everything booted up ok, no indication there was any issues. (Paths to the sharepoint look good) Notes during troubleshooting - Server1 is operating perfectly, all users can access shares and authenticate etc. - I've checked the SACL (Server Access Control List) settings is ok. - On Server2 in the Server Admin' app, I can see all the shares listed ok. The paths seem valid, I can disable / reenable the shares, no errors. - On Server2 'workgroup manager' lists all the accounts from the OD Master in the LDAP dir view. All seems fine from here. Basically everything looks normal but no file shares on Server2 can be accessed from regular users.

• How to convert JPEG JFIF files to JPEG Exif format?

  I recently put the SD card of my camera in a Windows 7 PC and start browsing pictures on it. I noticed some were not aligned correctly and use rotate feature included in Windows Photo Viewer in order to view them as I wanted. What I didn't know is that when rotate feature is used, it also overwrite the picture when pressing next or previous button resulting in a possible loss of quality (which is in my opinion a bad idea, app should at least warn user of what will happened when using such a feature). After that, I re-inserted the SD card back in my camera and bad surprise happened : the rotated picture could not be previewed anymore. Instead, i got a black screen saying "Incompatible JPEG format". Other files (untouched) are still working ok. To try to understand what happened I opened a JPEG file from camera and one generated on windows 7 in a hex editor. Here is the difference : The camera JPEG files have a Exif tag in them (with 0xE1 in header). Other JPEG files (Windows 7) have first a JFIF tag in it, followed by a Exif tag (with 0xE0 in header). So if i understand it well, both are JPEG files, but using a different internal format. Here is my question : is it possible (using some tool) to convert JFIF files to Exif format ? I understand that original camera files have been reencoded and thus lose some quality (getting originals back is impossible). What i want know if convert them from JFIF back to Exif (without a second loss of quality if possible...)

• Windows: disable remote access of local drive, even by domain admin

  We have a network of Windows 7 PCs that are managed as part of a domain. What we want is for the domain admin to be unable to view the PC's local drive (C:) unless he is physically at the PC. In other words, no remote desktop and no ability to use UNC. In other words, the domain admin should not be allowed to put \\user_pc\c$ in Windows Explorer and see all the files on that computer, unless he is physically present at the PC itself. Edit: to clarify some of the questions/comments that have come up. Yes, I am an admin---but a complete Windows novice. And yes, for the sake of this and my similar questions, it is fair to assume that I am working for someone who is paranoid. I understand the arguments about this being a "social problem versus a technical problem", and "you should be able to trust your admins", etc. But this is the situation in which I find myself. I'm basically new to Windows system administration, but am tasked with creating an environment that is secure by the company owner's definition---and this definition is clearly very different from what most people expect. In short, I understand that this is an unusual request. But I'm hoping there is enough expertise in the ServerFault community to point me in the right direction.

• IIS FTP 7.5 Data Channel Problem (SSL)

  Hey there I wonder if anyone can get me in the right direction. I am setting up both a FTPS Client and Server, FTPS Server using Microsoft’s iis FTP 7.5. On the client side it will be running on Linux and I am using M2crypto for the openssl wrapping (python). I am worried the problem is on the server side (iis7.5) due to the following discovery : If I host using Filezilla with BOTH the control and data channel being forced to be encrypted it works 100% (100% file transmission), if i use iis as the server everything works up to the point when the data channel takes over... i.e. all data of the retrieved file is already received correctly in my basket! The ftp server just won't send the final '226 Transfer complete.' on the cmd socket. Why? If i force the client or server to close the connection the file is 100% intact....If i use iis 7.5 with forced encryption on control channel all works 100% as long as i don’t force data channel... Here are some screenshots to demo this... If we terminate the client, the uploaded file on the server suddenly jumps up to full size.

• tomcat vs FULL J2EE Solutions

  We are getting ready to make a major revision in our Web Application architecture which currently is running on JBoss 4.2. At first we were looking at moving from 4.2 to JBoss 6 but after some research tomcat may be a better solution for us. My first question is their anything that JBoss can do that tomcat cannot do assuming you are using the correct plugins. We do not really use EJB's in our solution and it would appear there are simple plugins for web services, JMX and other features. Tomcat appears to have much better support, faster upgrade cycles and many, many books. Since there is less to the system it also seems much easier to support from an admin point of view. What am I missing? The main features we want to enable are better clustering support and session replication / persistence. • IIS7 can't read web.config on shared Mac filesystem

  I'm running a VirtualBox virtualized Windows 2008 Server on my Mac, just finished setting it up today. On it, I have SQL Server 2008, IIS and ColdFusion 9. I want to serve websites from my Mac filesystem (for development purposes). So I created a new website in IIS and pointed it at the appropriate path using a UNC path: \vboxsvr\rob\Sites\testsite, which contains the ColdFusion code and a web.config file. When I attempt to modify the file at all, or view the site in a web browser, I get an error: HTTP 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. I did some Googling, and found several similar problems, but nothing exactly like I have. The closest one seemed to indicate permissions. So I recreated the site and set it up to allow the Administrator (in Windows) to access the stuff. That didn't help. I can read/modify the files just fine from within Windows, but IIS itself can't seem to do it. What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks!
