    If you wanted to track down performance issues on a machine running Mac OS X and find out what was causing slowdowns, which command-line or graphical tools would you use, and how would you use them? I'm interested in advice on the best tools, and explanations of how to use them - when a machine slows down or freezes up, I'd like to be able to dig down and understand what's going on, memory / disk / CPU-wise.   • Publishing an Excel spreadsheet using Microsoft SBS 2008 to a web page that is viewable by mobile ph

    I am getting well out of my “superuser” depth here and would love some support. At work we have an Excel workbook (*.xls format circa Office 2003) which maintains our “engineers” timesheet. This handles what events we are doing across the year and how many “work units” it is. As far as a workbook goes, it is fairly simple with just a few =SUM(range) cells and some linked across sheets (12 sheets, one for each month) It is stored on a server, in a folder that provides “management” with full access and “engineers” with read-only access. The workbook itself is read-only for “engineers” and full access for “management”. I think these permissions are controlled through Active Directory. The workbook is protected with a password, assumingly to allow “management” to edit it even if they are working at a terminal logged in as an “engineer”. This protection prevents “engineers” from going to certain cells to see formulae and therefore editing them. The workbook has a macro which saves and closes it ten minutes after opening. This is to stop other “management” from being locked out by any one person who has logged in with editing privileges. I hope this is making sense to someone... :S Now then, we have Microsoft Small Business Server 2008. We have a shiny new web-based login for when we are offsite so we can get to Exchange webmail and our internal site (which uses Sharepoint 3.0). “Management” would like to be able to publish this timesheet automatically after changes (they don’t want to have to do anything different to what they are currently doing) so that using an iPhone “engineers” can check on it while out of the office. I am currently having a look at “Excel Services” for Office 2007 on TechNet but I am not sure if I am running down the right garden path at the moment. < EDIT This seems to suggest that I have to have Sharepoint Server 2007, with no mention of Sharepoint 3.0... ... "MOSS builds on WSS by adding both core features as well as end user web parts" - Wikipedia entry for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) this is not good news... "...and using the ASP.NET APIs, web parts can be written to extend the functionality of WSS." Wikipedia entry for Windows Sharepoint Services. Could this bring back what I need? Is this good news? Do I need to start learning ASP.NET?     I have the following autocommand, which basically strips whitespace at the end of each line. Unfortunately, at each save, it inserts a step into the undo to jump to the beginning to the file, which is quite annoying.   • New Static Website with Hosted DNS alternating 502, 503 and Page Does Not Exist Errors

    This has become an increasingly frustrating ordeal. I'm mostly a web developer, so forgive me if I am using improper terminology here. I have a client that had purchased a domain at JustHost. We built him a website and have it on our own server space. Now, I'm mostly used to dealing with godaddy and it is simple enough to manage dns records and point the A record to our server IP, where Apache on our end deals with the domains via name-based virtual hosts. But for some reason, in setting this up with JustHost, when attempting to go to the domain name, I either get a 502 or 503 error or "webpage does not exist". Now, I know that the basic functionality of the webpage must be working because I can access the the index etc straight through my servers www data (IE [server-ip]/website_folder). I was on the phone with technical support for over three hours yesterday with justhost and the best I could get was "That's really weird..." I've checked my logs and there doesn't seem to be anything coming through to my end. Does anybody have an idea of whats going on here? I would love for it to be a problem on my end, because justhost doesn't seem capable of helping further. Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks. I forgot to mention that we have several other sites up and running and completely accessible.

  • New to building computers worried about temps

    I'm new to building my own computers and I was wondering about maximum temperatures. I understand that the room temp can affect the computers temp but how relevent is it? I understand that if my room temp is 20°C none of my computer parts could be lower than that. But if my room is 27°C instead of 20°C would this cause my computers parts to heat up more/faster? My new computer I built myself for gaming is i7 2600k 16gb ram ddr3 1600 hd6970 2 gb 240gb ssd ( bought a nas with 3 2tb drives in raid 5 for my home network ) 850w modular psu I also have my old hp computer i3 2120 8gb ram hd6770 1tb hdd I also have 3 laptops in my household, but I am not worried about their temps, they heat up my legs but they are never under stress. Due to size and money reasons I used an old case and it only has one of the sides left on it. Is this bad for the computer and will the extra dust cause problems? Or should I leave it this way or take the missus wrath and buy a case? If so is there any certain case I should get? I don't care about looks I just want card reader and usb slots and for it to run as cool or cooler than now, my case has 1 fan. Also what are the max temps for my new and old computer parts? Is 40°C under load ok for my CPU, what about 70°C for my GPU is that ok too, or should I worry? What are normal and safe temps for my components? I have looked around but there seem to be lots of different answers. I know that 100°C is bad but I want my parts to last as long as possible and this site always seems to give good replies without arguing or flaming.

  • Cannot Attach Database in SQL Express More Than Two Directories Deep?

    I have a database in one of my Visual Studio Express projects. I want to attach it to my local SQLEXPRESS instance so I can run aspnet_regsql on it and add the membership database. When I select Attach Databases and then attempt to browse to the files (C:\Users\username\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\nameofproject) it only lets me navigate to C:\Users\username...Why? How can I fix this?

  • Notepad++: is there a way to force it to keep the autoindented-whitespace type?

    I wonder if we can force notepad++ to respect the previous whitespace character when it autoindents a new line: list[CR][LF] ····item1[CR][LF] ····item2[CR][LF] --->| (notepadd++ screenshot recreation showing hidden characters, because I don't have enough reputation to post images, sorry xP) If I am indenting with tabs I want a tab when notepad++ does an autoindent. But if I am indenting with spaces, I do want spaces.

  • A website hosted on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet, somewhere on the Internet?

    Background I'm attempting to demonstrate, using a real-world example, of why someone would not want to configure their internal network on the 1.0.0.0/8 subnet. Obviously it's because this is not designated as private address space. As of 2010, ARIN has apparently allocated 1.0.0.0/8 to APNIC (the Asia-Pacific NIC), who seems to have begun assigning addresses in that subnet, though not in 1.1.0.0/16, 1.0.0.0/16, and others (because these addresses are so polluted by bad network configurations all around the Internet). My Question My question is this: I'd like to find a website that responds on this subnet somewhere and use it as a counter-example, demonstrating to a non-technical user its inaccessibility from an internal network configured on 1.0.0.0/8. Other than writing a program to sniff all ~16 million hosts, looking for a response on port 80, does anyone know of a directory I can use, or even better yet, does anyone know of a site that's configured on this subnet? WHOIS seems to be too general of a search for me at this point...

  • Deleting MySQL rows causes lock table error

    I had a couple million rows to delete but they can't be deleted at once without this error ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size So I wrote a script to delete 100,000 rows 10,000 at a time. It ran once but when I run it a second time I get the error on the first attempt to delete 10,000. The way I'm trying to delete the 10,000 rows is to use a delete statement that refers to all 2 million rows but I use a limit clause to affect only 10,000. I've tried adding an "unlock tables;" statement to the script before the first delete but that doesn't help. I still get the lock table error on the first delete. Any ideas how I can do this? Is there a way I can tell it NOT to lock records? I can make sure nothing else is accessing the table.

  • Is there a way to see any tar progress per file?

    I have a couple of big files that I would like to compress. I can do this with for example tar cvfj big-files.tar.bz2 folder-with-big-files The problem is that I can't see any progress, so I don't have a clue how long it will take or anything like that. Using v I can at least see when each file is completed, but when the files are few and large this isn't the most helpful. Is there a way I can get tar to show more detailed progress? Like a percentage done or a progress bar or estimated time left or something. Either for each single file or all of them or both.

Apply steganography on a randomly selected image. http://openstego.sourceforge.net/cmdline.html The problem with NLP is that grammatical errors can be introduced. The problem with steganography is that the images are sourced from an image cache, and so recreating that cache with watermarked images will impart a delay when generating the PDF (I could just delete one image from the cache, but that's not an elegant solution). Problem: how to convert from .screenflow (and associated .scc files) to AVI or something a PC can play?   • e-mail no longer coming to aol inbox since I opened a Hotmail account [closed]

    I recently set up an email account with Hotmail. I have used AOL e-mail for years and would like to keep this as my main source for sending/receiving e-mail. When I set up the Hotmail account there was an option to have all my e-mail accounts forwarded to the Hotmail inbox. I set up this option and the page promised that all incoming mail would still be visible in the original inbox, in this case my AOL account. Well everything does come to the Hotmail account, the only problem is that I no longer receive these e-mails in my primary/desired location which is AOL. I went back and made sure the box was checked that provided the option through Hotmail that said "leave a copy of my messages on the server" (AOL) How do I get the e-mail that is being forwarded to Hotmail from my AOL account to still be visible in AOL, it should be in AOL inbox as that is the original destination but it is gone. Suggestions?

  • Host name change breaking http? Fedora

    OK so I have been messing around on my development server. It has been a while since I have had my head in linux and I suspect I have broken something. I have SSH running and that is working fine. I also have HTTP and I had FTP running also. Earlier today I decided I wanted to rename the machine so I updated the /etc/hosts file and /etc/sysconfig/network. I also changed the server name in the httpd.conf. I rebooted the machine and reconnected to SSH fine. Later I was messing around with the FTP service (trying to tighten up the user security) and when i tried to connect remotely to FTP no joy, it said cannot connect. I thought that was weird but had planned to remove ftp as we will be using github so removed ftp and moved on. Then I tried to connect to the website but major fail. even connecting to the IP address is failing. I used lynx to connect to the localhost and there was my site so something going on at server level. I thought maybe something up with iptables but I have not changed them but tried adding http but still no joy.   • Sending emails with remote mail server in ASP.NET blocked by Windows firewall?

    I want to migrate a web application from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 R2. All works fine except sending emails from the application. If I configure the application to use the smtp server on "localhost" it works, but changing it to the "real" host name (e.g. mail.example.org) no mail is sent. The error message says, that the remote server needs a secure connection or smtp authentication. But since it works when using "localhost" instead of the host name I doubt that this is the problem. Also it's unlikely a problem with the mail server, I also tried it with another one. So for me it seems like the firewall is blocking the outgoing connection to the mail server. I tried to open port 25, but it still did not work. Maybe I just did it the wrong way.

  • Determine Location of Inode Usage

    I recently installed Munin on a development web server to keep track of system usage. I've noticted that the system's inode usage is climbing by about 7-8% per day even though the disk usage has barely increased at all. I'm guessing something is writing a ton of tiny files but I can't find what / where. I know how to find disk space usage but I can't seem to find a way to summarize inode usage. Is there a good way to determine inode usage by directory so I can locate the source of the usage?

  • Copying between 2 network devices

    My network has 3 devices - 1 PC and 2 other network devices (which could be PC, NAS, external hard drive etc) If I want to copy data from one network device to another network device from my PC (using the copy and paste method (i.e right click a file, select copy and then right click into the destination folder and click paste) and therefore not using any tools that could be built into the network devices for such a transaction), does the data get routed via my PC or use my systems resources?

  • 2 sited hosted in NGINX with separate SSL certs. IE8 posting invalid when starting at one site going to the other

    If users with IE8 go directly to www.xyz.com, SSL cert is fine. Users going directly to www.zyx.com have no issues with cert. If users start at one site and go to the other, they get invalid cert with xyz being used on zyx which should not be happening. Reading the forums NGINX has SNI enabled and I have the correct version of OpenSSL to be able to handle multiple certs. IE8 seems to be the issue but these are customer facing sites. Is there a fix to make NGINX work for the customers experiencing the issue.

  • How to get started setting up IP security cameras

    I have just finished renovating my house. As part of the job, I have cat6 cable run through the house, including two external plugs. All cables terminate in the same location. My rough plan is to plug two IP cameras to monitor the front and rear, run POE from a central router to the two external cameras, plug my PC into the same router and run magic software X. Any machine plugged into the router or wirelessly connection should then be able to get a live feed and alerts based on motion detection. That's the plan, but I'm not sure how possible it is. What hardware to get and what monitoring software to get. Has anyone does something similar? What were your experiences?
