• Jax-ws 2.2 or Metro as Tomcat runtime environment

  I need an implementation of JAX-WS, that is RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT to use a client for Tomcat6. Which is better in your opinion? JAX-WS 2.2 https://jax-ws.dev.java.net/2.2/ Metro 2.0 https://metro.dev.java.net/2.0/ They have different installation procedures and different jars. For now I only need to be able to run a client from under Tomcat6 web apps. But later I'm planning to use ApacheCXF soap web-service, that will run on this Tomcat. As I understand, CXF is a unique implementation that does not any of mentioned runtime environments, so I guess whatever between metro & jax-ws2.2 I choose does not matter, right? Still, which one do you recommend?

• Javascript - Concatenate Multiple NodeLists Together

  I was originally asking for an elegant way to simulate the Array.concat() functionality in IE or older browsers, because it seemed that concat was not supported. Only, of course it is and the reason the object didn't support it is because it wasn't an array. Oops! getElementsByTagName returns a NodeList, not an array. The real question, then, is: what's a good way to get a single list of all the form elements in a document (input, select, textarea, button) to loop through them? An array isn't required... a single NodeList would be perfect, too. Note that I'm using IE6 as this is for a corporate intranet (soon IE8 though).

• Is it good practice to call module functions directly in VB.NET?

  I have a Util module in my VB.NET program that has project-wide methods such as logging and property parsing. The general practice where I work seems to be to call these methods directly without prefixing them with Util. When I was new to VB, it took me a while to figure out where these methods/functions were coming from. As I use my own Util methods now, I can't help thinking that it's a lot clearer and more understandable to add Util. before each method call (you know immediately that it's user-defined but not within the current class, and where to find it), and is hardly even longer. What's the general practice when calling procedures/functions of VB modules? Should we prefix them with the module name or not?

• Optimize SQL with Interbase

  I was inspired by the good answers from my previous question about SQL. Now this SQL is run on a DB with Interbase 2009. It is about 21 GB in size. SELECT DistanceAsMeters, Bold_Id, Created, AddressFrom.CityName_CO as FromCity, AddressTo.CityName_CO as ToCity FROM AddrDistance LEFT JOIN Address AddressFrom ON AddrDistance.FromAddress = AddressFrom.Bold_Id LEFT JOIN Address AddressTo ON AddrDistance.ToAddress = AddressTo.Bold_Id Where DistanceAsMeters = 0 and PseudoDistanceAsCostKm = 0 and not AddrDistance.bold_id in (select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask) Order By Created Desc There are 840000 rows with AddrDistance 190000 rows with Address and 4 with DistanceQueryTask. The question is, can this be done faster? I guess, the same query is run many times select bold_id from DistanceQueryTask. Note that I'm not interested in stored procedures, just plain SQL :)

• How can I install ruby on rails with rvm?

  I've been searching around on how to install it through the terminal on my mac. I'm using snow leopard. When I use the command: rvm install 1.9.3 I've also followed the other procedures that led me up to this to install, right now the current version is 1.8.3 Error running './configure --prefix="/Users/jose/.rvm/usr" ', please read /Users/jose/.rvm/log/ruby-1.9.3-p125/yaml/configure.log Then it mentions something about xcode and autoreconf was not found in the PATH. Error running 'patch -F 25 -p1 -N -f <"/Users/jose/.rvm/patches/ruby/1.9.3/p125/xcode-debugopt-fix-e34840.diff"',please read /Users/jose/.rvm/log/ruby-1.9.3-p125/patch.apply.xcode-debugopt-fix-r34840.log rvm requires autoreconf to install the selected ruby interpreter however autoreconf was not found in the PATH I been trying for awhile now, and found out i need to have Xcode for snow leopard which I cannot find. So my last option will be to upgrade to lion but I don't know about upgrading. Kind of scared to upgrade and everything becomes buggy.

  Have a program in Access, using VBA. I need to come up with an If statement to pull data from a text file. The data is a list of procedures and prices. I have to pull the prices from the text file to show in a report how much each procedure costs. • Changing a table-valued function that a stored procedure calls is not recognized?

  Hey all I have a stored procedure sp that calls a table-valued function tvf. Sometimes I modify the tvf but when subsequently executing sp, the output from sp is the same as before the modification. It seems like it is cached or compiled or something. If I make some dummy change to the sp, then I get the right output of the sp. Is there some way, I can overcome this problem? In Oracle it is possible to re-compile all stored procedures, but I haven't been able to figure out how to do this in SQL Server? Any help is highly appreciated.

• XSLT: Is there a way to "inherit" canned functionality?

  i am once again having to cobble together a bit of XSLT into order to turn generated XML into (rather than simply generating HTML). i'm having huge deja-vu this time again. i'm once again having to solve again basic problems, e.g.: how to convert characters into valid html entity references how to preserve whitespace/carriage returns when converting to html how to convert to HTML as opposed to xhtml how to convert dates from xml format into presentable format how to tear apart strings with substring This is all stuff that i've solved many times before. But every time i come back to XSLT i have to start from scratch, re-inventing the wheel every time. If it were a programming language i would have a library of canned functions and procedures i can call. i would have subroutines to perform the commonly repeated tasks. i would inherit from a base class that already implements the ugly boilerplate stuff. Is there any way in XSLT to grow, expand and improve the ecosystem with canned code?

  We need to redo a database in MySQL that has been already done on Informix, is there a way to migrate not only the schema, but the stored procedures as well? Thanks. We have a client whom we built a web application that uses an Informix database. Now the client wants to be able to implement the same software but on multiple closed networks (like 20). Doing this using Informix would be very expensive (20 licences X_X). So the best approach is to redo the database on something like MySQL. The application was done using Flex, .Net (using ODBC) and Informix.

  I am attempting to tune some stored procedures and have a question on indexes. I have used the tuning advisor and they recommended two indexes, both for the same table. The issue is one index is for one column and the other is for multiple columns, of which it includes the same column from the first. My question is why and what is the difference? • T-SQL out of order insert

  Basically I have a User-Defined Table Type (for use as a table-valued variable) which I'm referencing in a stored procedure that effectively just calls two other stored procedures, then inserts those values into the table type. Id est INSERT INTO @tableValuedVariable (var1, var2, var3, var4, var5) EXEC [dbo].StoredProcedure1; INSERT INTO @tableValuedVariable (var1, var2, var5) EXEC [dbo].StoredProcedure2; You can probably already tell what I'm going to ask. Basically StoredProcedure2 only returns a few of the values the table is set to hold, and I'd like those other variables to just be null (as defined as default). Only SQL is complaining that I'm not specifying all the variables available to that table. The return datasets can be quite sizable so I'd like to avoid loops and such for obvious reasons.   We have two classes: template<typename T, typename Size, typename Stack, typename Sparse> class Matrix and template<typename T, typename Size> class Iterator Matrix should be able to return begin and end iterators and Iterator will keep a referrence to the Matrix to access the elements via it's interface. We don't want Iterator to depend on the internal storage of the Matrix to prevent coupling. How can we solve this cyclic dependency problem? (The internal Storage class has the same template parameters as the Matrix class and the same access procedures as the Matrix itself)

  Hi everyone, I'm new to SQL Server reporting services, and am trying to decipher an existing report. It's nothing too bad, but I notice it does have two report datasets defined. (They are generated via separate stored procedures) I'm trying to figure out where and how the report datasets are linked together so the Fields collection has both sets of columns available and the report has a single rowset to traverse. Is there a section in the report layout where a joining of datasets is defined? I'm using Visual Studio 2005 to design and preview the report fwiw. Thanks for your help!

• How much should I charge for Rails programming?

  I have been asked to quote an hourly rate for freelance programming for a Rails project. Although it would be my first paid project on Rails, I know the technology well from personal projects and have a decade of professional programming experience. This would be my first freelance project ever, so I have no idea how to find out what the going rate for my services should be. Obviously, if I quote a rate that is too high, they may choose someone else - too low and I may feel cheated later on. Any suggestions? Update: I am in NYC and the project is scheduled for 6 months to a year (but this seems unrealistic - I think it will be a multi-year project). I would develop on site (at a corporate location) with one other developer and the project would consist of about 200 custom-built pages initially. 10 hour days with weekends and additional overtime as required. The customer has given no information about how much they will pay - "a competitive rate" - they want me to start the discussion.

• Create Sum of calculated rows in Microsoft Reporting Services

  This seems like it should be simple but I can't find anything yet. In Reporting Services I have a table with up to 6 rows that all have calculated values and dynamic visibility. I would like to sum these rows. Basically I have a number of invoice items and want to make a total. I can't change anything on the DB side since my stored procedures are used elsewhere in the system. Each row pulls data from a different dataset as well, so I can't do a sum of the dataset. Can I sum all the rows with a table footer? Similarly to totaling a number of rows in Excel? It seems very redundant to put my visibility expression from each row into my footer row to calculate the sum.

• Mapping class properties to generic columns in table .NET

  I have have a SQL Server table which has generic names like Text1, Text2.. etc. The table was designed like this because the same structure is used for different projects. I have a class in .NET which has properties. Say a Customer class has a property called FirstName. How can I do the mapping from FirstName to Text1 just once (central place) in the application so that I don't have to remember and hard code the mappings all over the app when I create the different DAL methods? For example, I want the app to know when I want to update, insert a FirstName, the DAL automatically uses Text1. Basically I don't have to remember which property goes to which column. The idea is so the developers do not map the properlies/columns in a wrong way. It's always consistent. Note: Database inserts, updates and deletes are allowed through stored procedures only.

• aspnet_reqsql not working at all

  I would like to create the ASP.NET User database template on a database of my own, because I'd like to fully untegrate the user system with the rest of my DB. As I've read, i needed to use the aspnet_regsql tool. I put all the options (because my database is running on SQLEXPRESS and is in an mdf file in my project's folder). the program starts and seemingly runs without any errors, however, when I open the database after that, not tables or stored procedures have been added. One more thing: I did one more test. I intentionally gave the -d option a wrong mdf file address, and surprisingly, the program "finished" correctly, yet no file was crated or modified whatsoever.

  I went to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Minneapolis yesterday and was slightly surprised by how much they were trotting out SharePoint and improved SharePoint development in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint is something I've largely ignored over the years as a web developer and solution architect on a small development team. I was always under the impression that SharePoint was used mostly for intranets in large corporations, and that if you were developing for SharePoint, it meant that a corporate decision had been made to use it and you as a developer probably had few (if any) options. I realize this assumption is probably incorrect. So, what are the "cool" uses for SharePoint? What unique business problems have you solved using it? What could make a developer excited to be working on something for SharePoint?

  Hi! I read something like this about db views: Views are incredibly powerful and useful for one reason that stands out above all the other very good reasons. They reduce code duplication. That is, in most cases, the bottom line. If a query will be used in three or more places, then a view will drastically simplify your changes if the schema or query parameters change. I once had to edit 22 stored procedures to change some query logic. If the original architecture had utilized views, then I would have had only three changes. Can anyone explain to me how it works, and maybe give me some examples? Best regards!

• Continuous integration with .net and svn

  We're currently not applying the automated building and testing of continous integration in our project. We haven't bothered this far as we're only 2 developers working on it, but even with a team of 2 I still think it would be valuable to use continous integration and get a confirmation that our builds don't break or tests start failing. We're using .Net with C# and WPF. We have created Python-scripts for building the application - using MSbuild - and for running all tests. Our source is in SVN. What would be the best approach to apply continous integration with this setup? What tool should we get? It should be one which doesn't require alot of setup. Simple procedures to get started and little maintanance is a must.

• Java framework "suggestion" for persisting the results from an Oracle 9i stored procedure using Apac

  Hello, I am developing a Java servlet which calls an Oracle stored procedure. The stored procedure is likely to "grow" over time, and I have concerns the amount of time taken to "display the results on a web page". While I am at the implementation stage, I would like some suggestions of a Persistence framework which will work on Apache Tomcat 5.5? I see two approaches to persisting the database results. A scheduled database query every N minutes, or something which utilises triggers. Hibernate seems like the obvious answer, but I have never called stored procedures from Hibernate (HQL and Criteria).   I'm interested in returning an empty result set from SQL Server stored procedures in certain events. The intended behaviour is that a L2SQL DataContext.SPName().SingleOrDefault() will result in CLR null value. I'm presently using the following solution, but I'm unsure whether it would be considered bad practice, a performance hazard (I could not find one by reading the execution plan), or if there is simply a better way: SELECT * FROM [dbo].[TableName] WHERE 0 = 1; The execution plan is a constant scan with a trivial cost associated with it. The reason I am asking this instead of simply not running any SELECTs is because I'm concerned previous SELECT @scalar or SELECT INTO statements could cause unintended result sets to be served back to L2SQL. Am I worrying over nothing?
