  Hi, I've seen in (Apple) sample code two types of ways of allocation memory, and am not sure I understand the difference and resulting behavior. // FAILS NSMutableArray *anArray = [NSMutableArray array]; [anArray release]; // WORKS NSMutableArray *anArray1 = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; [anArray release]; By "FAILS" I mean I get crashes/runtime warnings etc., and not always as soon as I call the release... I need a client that I can use to log in to the Database remotely and create/update tables and edit all the data. I found the MySQL Administrator client provided by them, but it seems you can do everything BUT edit the actual data with it. Is there anything like this? Would I be able to use SQL Server Express (or something similar), to connect to a remote server online and do all of this?

• Seeking free ODBC database optimization tool for non-experts

  I'm a database n00b and am reading as many books as I can. I have been given responsibility for an ODBC tool where the databases were designed by a hardware engineer with some VB experience - which made him a s/w guru in the small firm at that time. Things are running slowly and I suspect that the db could have been designed better. I hope to learn enough to use Explain/Describe, etc maybe add some indices, but, in the meantime, is there any free for commercial use tool which can examine an ODBC database and suggest improvements. I'm just talking about db schema here, but maybe I should also be looking at optimizing Selects with Joins? Is there a tool for that? ODBC compliant.

  I am doing a school project where we need to create an android application which needs to connect to a database. the application needs to gain and store information for people's profiles on the database. But unfortunatly we are a little bit stuck at this point because there are numerous ways to link the application such as http request through apache or through the SOAP/REST protocol. But it's really hard to find good instructions or tutorials on the problem since I can't really find them. Maybe that's cause i'm probably using the wrong words on google. Unfortunately I have little relevant information. So if anyone can help me with finding relevant links to good online tutorials or howto's than those are very welcome.

  I am reading the LazyTableImages code that Apple have released and they do something to this effect (in an NSOperation subclass): - (void)dealloc { [myProperty release]; [myProperty2 release]; } - (void)main { // // Parse operation undertaken here // self.myProperty = nil; self.myProperty2 = nil; } My thinking is that they do this in case dealloc is called before setting properties to nil. Is my thinking correct here? Are the releases unnecessary, as self.myProperty = nil effectively releases myProperty? One thing I have noticed in this code is that they don't release all retained objects in dealloc, only some of them, which is really the cause for my confusion. Cheers

  I'm playing around with writing some simple Spring-based web apps and deploying them to Tomcat. Almost immediately, I run into the need to customize the Tomcat's JVM settings with -XX:MaxPermSize (and -Xmx and -Xms); without this, the server easily runs out of PermGen space. Why is this such an issue for Java compared to other garbage collected languages? Comparing counts of "tune X memory usage" for X in Java, Ruby, Perl and Python, shows that Java has easily an order of magnitude more hits in Google than the other languages combined.

  I am trying to design a sqlite database that will store notes. Each of these notes will have common fields like title, due date, details, priority, and completed. In addition though, I would like to add data for more specialized notes like price for shopping list items and author/publisher data for books. I also want to have a few general purpose fields that users can fill with whatever text data they want. How can I design my database table in this case? I could just have a field for each piece of data for every note, but that would waste a lot of fields and I'd like to have other options and suggestions.

• Database design efficiency with 1 to many relationships limited 1 to 3

  This is in mysql, but its a database design issue. If you have a one to many relationship, like a bank customer to bank-accounts, typically you would have the table that records the bank-account information have a foreign key that keeps track of the relationship between account and customer. Now this follows the 3rd normal form thing and is a widely accepted way of doing it. Now lets say that you are going to limit a user to only having 3 accounts. The current database implementation will support this and nothing would need to change. But another way to do this would have 3 coloms in the account table that have the id of the 3 respective accounts in them. By the way this violates 1st normal form of db design. The question is what would be the advantage and disadvantages of having the user account relationship recored in this way over the traditional?

I now need to add some functionality such as sending an email reminder to someone when a critical task is due. How should this be done? Obviously I don’t want every instance of the program to be performing this function (Heh each user would get 10+ emails). Should I add the capability to the application as a "Mode" and then run a copy on the database server in this mode or would it be better to create a new app altogether to perform "Global" type tasks?   Hi all, I'm fairly new to both Rails and Heroku but I'm seriously thinking of using it as a platform to deploy my Ruby/Rails applications. I want to use all the power of Heroku, so I prefer the "embedded" PostgreSQL managed by Heroku instead of the addon for Amazon RDS for MySQL, but I'm not so confident without the possibility to access my data in a SQL client... I know that in a well made app you have no need to access DB, but there are some situations (add rows to a config table, see data not mapped in a view, update some columns for debugging issues, performance monitoring, running queries for reporting, etc.) when this can be good... How do you solve this problem? What's you experience in a real life app powered by Heroku? Thanks!

  Hello all, Today, without much thought, I wrote a simple function return to a char* based on a switch statement of given enum values. This, however, made me wonder how I could release that memory. What I did was something like this: char* func() { char* retval = new char; // Switch blah blah - will always return some value other than NULL since default: return retval; } I apologize if this is a naive question, but what is the best way to release the memory seeing as I cannot delete the memory after the return and, obviously, if I delete it before, I won't have a returned value. What I was thinking as a viable solution was something like this void func(char*& in) { // blah blah switch make it do something } int main() { char* val = new char; func(val); // Do whatever with func (normally func within a data structure with specific enum set so could run multiple times to change output) val = NULL; delete val; val = NULL; return 0; } Would anyone have anymore insight on this and/or explanation on which to use?   In my .h file I have: NSMutableArray *myArray; @property (nonatomic, retain) NSMutableArray *myArray; My .m file looks basically like this: @synthesize myArray; - (id) init { self = [super init]; if (self != nil) { self.myArray = .... ? // here I want to create an empty array } return self; } - (void) dealloc { [self.myArray release]; [super dealloc]; } What I'm not sure about is what do to in the init. 1) self.myArray = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; 2) NSMutableArray *tmp = [[NSMutableArray alloc] init]; self.myArray = tmp; [tmp release]; Solution 1 doesn't seem right to me, because of my @property (retain) setting I automatically increase the retain counter when setting self.myArray, but additionally I have already a "+1 retain" due to the [NSMutableArray alloc]. Thus the second solution seems more correct to me, even though it is cumbersome. Also am I wondering if self.myArray = ... is actually the same as [self setMyArray:...] and thus does increase the retain count.

• Advantage Database Replication

  I have a client that wants two sites to have the ability to sync databases so information at Site A can be synced with Site B so the two sites can look at the same data. I'm not even sure of the infrastructure required. Would a VPN required to connect the 2 databases or would an internet based database work ie/Site A to InternetDatabase and Site B to InternetDatabase. Each site copies data to it periodically and then the InternetDatabase syncs it and the Sites can then pull data down. My other thought was something like Dropbox. If Site A and Site B use a Dropbox account to sync the ADT files etc can the database at each site then sync with those ADT files? Thanks
