  This is about Windows 8 RTM. How can I change the lock screen in Windows 8 that appears after connecting to the machine via RDP? You can change your lock screen for your user account like so: Hit the Windows key. Right click your user name in the upper right hand corner, choose Change Account Picture. Click Lock Screen, choose a new picture. However, if you then connect to the computer where you've done this from another computer via RDP, using the same account, the physical machine you've connected to will display the "default" user lock screen - a stylized Space Needle / Seattle picture. It's not a bad picture, but I'd like to change it.

• How can I fix my C++ compiler as it isn't loaded by default?

  Recently I had installed the Ubuntu flavour of the Linux operating system. I had opened a terminal and just wrote a sample C program to check if it is compiling. When I saved the sample file and compiled with cc a.c, errors comes that the standard library is not loaded (i.e stdio.h). When I went to help pages, it says that the C or C++ compiler doesnt gets loaded by default and we should do it ourselves. So can anyone help me out to fix this problem, i.e to load the C/C++ compiler.

  Hi all, I'm new to sharepoint 2007, currently the home page is htp://internal.com/sites/osfc/Pages/Default.aspx but I would like to use htp://internal.com or have htp://internal.com redirect to the long URL. How can I do this? I thought of using a 301 redirect but the permissions on the site in IIS don't allow users to view files placed in the root and I don't want to mess with the permissions. Currently if I visit http://internal.com I see a sharepouint Access Denied page (htp://internal.com/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx?Source=%2f). Note: I've used htp:// above as serverfault doesn't allow more than 1 https:// link. Many thanks Steven

• Notepad++'s pesky EOL Format switching -- how to remove the invisible (default?) keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+M, Ctrl+J

  Notepad++ lets the user specify whether the end of lines (EOL) format for a file should be entirely in Windows, Unix, or Mac formats. Notepad++ also remember the last one encountered in a file and uses that EOL format when a new file is created. But Notepad++ seems to have some pesky default keyboard shortcuts built-in that can create MIXED format files, creating havoc with this otherwise quite reasonable situation. Specifically: - Ctrl+M puts a Mac style EOL, i.e. (0x0D only), - Ctrl+J puts a UNIX style EOL, i.e. (0x0A only), The hazard is that rapid typing and using the keyboard heavily with other shortcut commands could inadvertantly mean typing oone of these above, each time turning at least one line in the file into another EOL format. So my Question: How can I turn OFF these apparently built-in keyboard shortcuts. Please Note: I've already scanned through Settings > Shortcut Mapper and could not find Ctrl+M or Ctrl+J listed for EOL conversion. Thanks,

• Chef command to create new ec2 instance with second ebs volume attached and mounted instead of the default ephemeral volume?

  We currently use this command to create a new ec2 instance with chef: knife ec2 server create --node-name=prod-apache-1 --availability-zone us-east-1c --image ami-3d4ff254 --distro ubuntu12.04-gems --groups "default" --ssh-key foo --identity-file ~/.ssh/id_rsa --ssh-user ubuntu --flavor m1.small After this command we then run further chef commands to finish provisioning the server. I was wondering if it would be possible while first setting up the instance I wanted a 100 gb volume created and mounted at /mnt and to have the ephemeral storage mounted at /tmp or /mnt-ephemeral instead. If not what further commands in chef would you advise running? I know how to do this via the aws console and can probably figure out how to do it via the ec2 command line tools but I am knew to chef and a bit overwhelmed.

• Can I set Windows default second-monitor behaviour to "Extend these displays"?

  I travel to multiple offices (and multiple desks in those offices), and whenever possible I plug an external monitor into my laptop. Whenever I plug in a monitor I haven't used before, Windows defaults to "Duplicate these displays" - which messes up the arrangement of icons on my desktop if the external monitor is a different shape from my laptop's monitor. I then select "Extend these displays", and my laptop screen returns to its original shape - but my icons don't go back to their original arrangement. Grrrrr. Fast-forward a few days or weeks; I've got my icons arranged so I can find stuff again - then I go to a new office and it starts all over again. I'm tired of this. Is it possible to make "Extend these displays" the default behavior? I'm using Windows 8 x64 Home Premium, but I had the same complaint under Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. (Prior to that, I hadn't discovered the joy of dual displays. Ah, the time I wasted...)

• When opening any file in excel, a 1 is added to ther name, and the default is to save a new copy…

  Ok... I've searched a lot for this, but it's not an easy question to search for! When I open any files (xls, or xlsx) in Excel 2007, excel acts like it's a read only file, essentially creating a new file with the name plus a 1 on the end... Eg. I open NewDoc.xlsx Excel opens it as NewDoc1.xlsx and the save button brings up the save as dialogue in my default folder. Does anyone know how to set it back to allowing me to open, edit and save a document without having to browse to the original document and save over it!? My immediate thought was access permissions, but the file is in a network folder with my user given Full Control, I also tried creating a new file in that folder, and also on my local machine just in case - same result. To make it even stranger, if I browse to the original file using the save as dialogue, it will let me save over the original, without any further prompts.

  Hello, I would like to redirect index.php, as well as any other valid default file (e.g. index.html, index.asp, etc.) to the document root (which contains index.php) with something like this: RewriteRule ^index\.(php|htm|html|asp|cfm|shtml|shtm)/?$ / [NC,L] However, this is of course giving me an infinite redirect loop. What's the right way to do this? If possible, I'd like to have this work in both the development and production environment, so I don't want to specify an explicit url like http://www.mysite.com/ as the target. Thanks!

• In OpenOffice Spreadsheet, how can I set the default Date format?

  I'm using OO 3.1.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 (in case that matters to the answer). I like my dates to appear as YYYY-MM-DD. I can't think of a time when I want to see a date in any other format, so I'm constantly changing how dates look. That's manageable, though annoying. What's gotten me to the point of posting is that when I edit a cell with a date value, I have to edit it in the format MM/DD/YYYY, which is really, really annoying, as I'm usually mucking with the day (or possibly the month), and very seldom the year. So there's lots of cursor or mouse use, wasting my time. So is there a way that I can change how dates are edited, or at least the default display format? Thanks!

  I am building a Pay Rate Calculator worksheet with a Flat/Base pay rate & numerous Overtime pay rates. I would like to be able to have the "Overtime" pay rate cells to change depending on my selection from my drop-down list. My list selections are "Flat Rate" and "Compounding". 1) If I select "Flat Rate" how can I make all the "Overtime" cell rates and totals default to zero or calculate to zero, to show the user there is no overtime rates to be applied to this job and to use the one rate to pay? 2)And if I select "Compounding" the Overtime rate cells are updated to add/include additional fees, to show the user Overtime rates apply to the job and penalties have automatically been calculated on top for them. Please explain like I'm a 2 year old - learning as I go. Many thanks :)

• Making Windows 7 default to "All Files" when opening a document?

  I'm taking over an old coworkers job and part of that means I'll be working on various IFS tickets without any real ERP experience. I'm working with one user who is trying to check in documents in IFS. Right now, IFS defaults to JPEGs and then she has to select "All Files" in order find PDFs. Example: http://i.imgur.com/xK0iAfF.png As much as I'd like to say "it's one extra step, come on" the user's manager has insisted it interrupts her workflow and asked us to get on it. I've spoken with our IFS experts and they're unaware of any setting that would make the open dialog default to All Files in IFS. I've searched in Google for any setting in Windows 7 that would do that - but those have been unsuccessful - I keep getting results about changing which program opens a specific file type.

  I'm setting up a small office network with a single public IP (let's say it's 69.16.230.117). I've configured NAT on the router with incoming traffic forwarded to the server (say the server has a private IP of 192.168.0.2). Is it okay to configure the client machines on the same subnet to access the server via the router's public IP (69.16.230.117)? In practice it's never caused me problems, but I've heard, here and there, that it is a bad idea, and one should use the private IP (192.168.0.2). Does connecting to the default host via public IP from within its subnet cause any issues? Please refrain from writing "never! it breaks the intranet!" ;-)

• Subdomain on a separate server (Windows/IIS) won't load default web site?

  I've got a domain hosted under godaddy.com. I set it up so that subdomain.mysite.com points to a different server which uses Windows/IIS (say for example ip 1.1.1.1). When I go to the subdomain I get no errors, but no webpage loads. In IIS under the default website I added a bindings for subdomain.mysite.com with the ip of 1.1.1.1, but still nothing loads, just a totally blank page. I know for sure the subdomain host is working correctly because when I ping my subdomain, the correct IP shows. What am I missing to get this working?

  Could anyone advise how to programmatically change the default Windows XP code page (I'm doing this from Delphi)? (This would be the equivalent of going into Control Panel - Regional Settings - Language for non-Unicode applications). In this case, I want to switch to Chinese (PRC) and so am writing to the following registry strings: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\ ACP=936 MACCP=10008 OEMCP=936 (Which is exactly what changing the non-Unicode codepage drop down in Control Panel does). There must be another setting which I need to change - and I'd prefer to use a Win API call (if available) rather than writing to the registry myself. I've also tried setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language\ Default=0804 (Chinese PRC) to no avail. I don't want to change the 'locale' per se as this will also change time / date settings, separators, etc. etc. This is because I'm using an ANSI application that needs to render Chinese characters, and I'm writing a tool to automatically switch the system show the characters (while leaving other aspects of the UI intact). Other users can choose their answers for the aurvey and then polls are taken to get the results of the survey. I already have the database schema for this Questions id, user_id, category_id, question_text, date_started Answers id, user_id, question_id, choice_id, explanation, date_added Choices id, question_id, choice_text As for now, users can choose their own choice answers to their surveys... but I want to be able to add a default "I dont care" or "I dont know" choice to every survey for people who simply dont care about the topic to take sides or who cant choose. So lets say theres a survey that asks who was a better president, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagon, or Richard Nixon... I want to be able to add a default "I dont care" option. I was thinking to just add that extra choice EVERY TIME a user creates a survey, but then I wouldn't have much control over the text for that choice after that survey has been created, and I want to know if theres a better way to do this, like create another table or something Thanks

  I have a bunch of long-running scripts and applications that are storing output results in a directory shared amongst a few users. I would like a way to make sure that every file and directory created under this shared directory automatically had u=rwxg=rwxo=r permissions. I know that I could use umask 006 at the head off my various scripts, but I don't like that approach as many users write their own scripts and may forget to set the umask themselves. I really just want the filesystem to set newly created files and directories with a certain permission if it is in a certain folder. Is this at all possible? Update: I think it can be done with POSIX ACLs, using the Default ACL functionality, but it's all a bit over my head at the moment. If anybody can explain how to use Default ACLs it would probably answer this question nicely.

  I know that component-model indicates whether a property has a default value or not, by means of ShouldSerializeValue method of PropertyDescriptor. The base windows-forms Control class, has some properties like ForeColor, BackColor and Font, that defaults to the same value of the parent, but I could not find any TypeDescriptor or PropertyDescriptor that provides these default values. The Control class does not implement ICustomTypeDescriptor nor has a TypeDescriptionProviderAttribute. How does the Control class indicates that these properties should be serialized or not? Where does it provide the PropertyDescriptors for these properties?? Thanks!!!

  I've got an application that uses 2 long-running SwingWorker tasks and I've just encountered a couple of Windows computers with updated JVMs that only start one of the them. There are no errors indicated so I have to assume that the default thread pool has only a single thread and therefore the second SwingWorker object is getting queued when I try to execute it. So, (1) how do I check check how many threads are available in the default SwingWorker thread pool, and (2) how do I add threads if I'm going to need more? Anything else that I should know? This apparent single-thread thread-pool situation goes against all of my expectations. I'm setting up a ThreadPoolExecutor but this seems so wrong...

I have created an iPhone contact list address book entry for a person, "John Smith" with the following phone number entries: Mobile (604) 123-4567 iPhone (778) 123-4567 Home (604) 789-4561 Work (604) 456-7891 Main (604) 789-1234 megaphone (234) 567-8990 Note that the first five labels are default labels provided by the Contacts application and the last label, "megaphone", is a custom label. • Is there a way to initialize ImageKit's IKSaveOptions to default to TIFF with LZW compression?

  I'm using Mac OS X 10.6 SDK ImageKit's IKSaveOptions to add the file format accessory to an NSSavePanel using: - (id)initWithImageProperties:(NSDictionary *)imageProperties imageUTType:(NSString *)imageUTType; and - (void)addSaveOptionsAccessoryViewToSavePanel:(NSSavePanel *)savePanel; I have tried creating an NSDictionary to specify Compression = 5, but I cannot seem to get the IKSaveOptions to show Format:TIFF, Compression:LZW when the NSSavePanel first appears. I've also tried saving the returned imageProperties dictionary and the userSelection dictionary, and then tried feeding that back in for the next time, but the NSSavePanel always defaults to Format:TIFF with Compression:None. Does anyone know how to customize the default format/compression that shows up in the accessory view? I would like to default the save options to TIFF/LZW and furthermore would like to restore the user's last file format choice for next time. I am able to control the file format using the imageUTType (e.g. kUTTypeJPEG, kUTTypePNG, kUTTypeTIFF, etc) but I am still unable to set the initial compression option for TIFF or JPEG formats.   Launching the android SDK manager from the command line gets me this error and others like: Failed to fetch URL http://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repository/addons_list-1.xml, reason: Failure initializing default SSL context I've done plenty of searches and have forced http instead of https, created an androidtool.cfg file and added the line sdkman.force.http=true permisions for all files in ~/.android are rw r r. I'm calling android logged in as the owner of those files. I am not using a proxy and I have no anti virus running. I just installed fedora 16 and am not sure of any firewalls running by default. I suspect a permissions problem somewhere along the line. any ideas?
