• Getting many files from a SharePoint Document Library the easy way

  As an individual who does not use Internet Explorer as their primary browser, there is a great feature that you may never notice that allows you to easily copy files to and from a document library: the Open in Windows Explorer link. In browsers such as Chrome or Firefox this link may not appear. I know this isn’t a major groundbreaking feature, but it’s really easy to overlook and it’s worth knowing about, especially when you need to create a local copy of a full document library. In this quick blog we’ll go over how to access this feature in both SharePoint 2007 and 2010. First, make sure you are in Internet Explorer. These options may not show in other browsers. In SharePoint 2007, browse to the document library you would like to access then select Actions > Open with Windows Explorer. In SharePoint 2010, browse to the document library you would like to access then select Library Tools > Library > Open with Explorer from the ribbon.

• Creating a bootable CD based on Ubuntu Server

  Note: bootable here refers to an Installation CD, not to the El Torito bootable CD standard if narrowly construed, or to a Live CD if widely construed. What tools exist to create a bootable CD based on Ubuntu 12.04? Unlike the Live CD used for the Desktop edition, the Server edition doesn't use Casper and that's exactly what I want. I.e. this question is not about a live CD! I have read InstallCDCustomization, but that only covers preseeding, adding modules etc. What I would like to achieve is rather to build a bootable CD from scratch, preferably based on the kernel of my running system, the bash and other binaries from that running system. I know how to preseed my own installation CD, so I'm comfortable with the tools involved there. However, that skips important parts such as creating the directory structure that is expected on a bootable CD. And that's what I'm looking for. I guess the question could be summed up as: what tools are the Ubuntu build masters using to author the alternate and server installation CDs and where can I find documentation for these? I would prefer doing this on the terminal (because that's how I run the Ubuntu Server installations themselves). But if I need a second machine with GUI to do it, I can certainly live with that.

  I am an iOS developer. I have read about unit testing and how it is used to test specific pieces of your code. A very quick example has to do with processing JSON data onto a database. The unit test reads a file from the project bundle and executes the method that is in charge of processing JSON data. But I dont get how this is different from actually running the app and testing with the server. So my question might be a bit general, but I honestly dont understand the proper use of unit testing, or even how it is useful; I hope the experienced programmers that surf around StackOverflow can help me. Any help is very much appreciated!

• Legal Precautions of Customizing Ubuntu LiveCD

  Hello everyone, the organization I work at wants to create a custom Ubuntu LiveCD, the customizations are: Pre-installed programs, plugins, some device drivers, and aesthetics such as icons and backgrounds, as well as changing Firefox's homepage and removing unneeded packages. Not big changes, obviously, and we wish to distribute this custom image for clients to use as a bootable CD or USB stick in order to have a quick environment where all our tools are available instantly. What are the licensing and legal consequences of this? What if some of the programs or plugins that are to be pre-packaged are not GPL'd? I should finally note that we are not changing any code in the kernel or any other distro component. Thank you for your time!

      QUICKLINK: Note 153788.1 ORA-600/ORA-7445 Lookup tool Note 1082674.1 : A Video To Demonstrate The Usage Of The ORA-600/ORA-7445 Lookup Tool [Video]   Have you observed an ORA-07445 error reported in your alert log? While the ORA-600 error is "captured" as a handled exception in the Oracle source code, the ORA-7445 is an unhandled exception error due to an OS exception which should result in the creation of a core file.  An ORA-7445 is a generic error, and can occur from anywhere in the Oracle code. The precise location of the error is identified by the core file and/or trace file it produces.  Looking for the best way to diagnose? Whenever an ORA-7445 error is raised a core file is generated.  There may be a trace file generated with the error as well.   Prior to 11g, the core files are located in the CORE_DUMP_DEST directory.   Starting with 11g, there is a new advanced fault diagnosability infrastructure to manage trace data.  Diagnostic files are written into a root directory for all diagnostic data called the ADR home.   Core files at 11g will go to the ADR HOME/cdump directory.   For more information on the Oracle 11g Diagnosability feature see Note 453125.1 11g Diagnosability Frequently Asked Questions Note 443529.1 11g Quick Steps to Package and Send Critical Error Diagnostic Information to Support[Video]   NOTE:  While the core file is captured in the Diagnosability infrastructure, the file may not be included with a diagnostic package.1.  Check the Alert LogThe alert log may indicate additional errors or other internal errors at the time of the problem.   In some cases, the ORA-7445 error will occur along with ORA-600, ORA-3113, ORA-4030 errors.  The ORA-7445 error can be side effects of the other problems and you should review the first error and associated core file or trace file and work down the list of errors.   Note 1020463.6 DIAGNOSING ORA-3113 ERRORS Note 1812.1 TECH:  Getting a Stack Trace from a CORE file Note 414966.1 RDA Documentation Index   If the ORA-7445 errors are not associated with other error conditions, ensure the trace data is not truncated. • Over a million COBOL programmers in the world?

  I think I heard on a previous StackOverflow podcast that COBOL was used as the programming language for traffic lights (or something like that), so this got me interested. I did a quick Google search and found this little article: Today, Cobol is everywhere, yet largely unheard of by millions of people who interact with it daily when using the ATM, stopping at traffic lights or buying a product online. The statistics on Cobol attest to its huge influence on the business world: There are over 220 billion lines of Cobol in existence, a figure which equates to about 80 per cent of the world’s actively used code. There over a million Cobol programmers in the world. There are 200 times as many Cobol transactions that take place each day than Google searches. I didn't really trust the source seeing as how it's on some random PHPBB forum. So how accurate are these figures? Are there really 220 billion lines of COBOL? I assume a few people/companies still use COBOL, but how many?

  Scott mentioned on twitter a great post on using VS2010 code coverage with ASP.NET unit tests with the following comment. So I figured I would work up a quick post on using Gallio with the code coverage features (and thus MbUnit, NUnit etc).  Using Gallio with the VS2010 code coverage features is exactly the same as you would use MSTest. Just enable the code coverage collector.   Select the assembly you want to profile (double click the collector to do this) Run your test   Right Click and select code coverage.

• How to break terrain (in blender) into Chunks for a game engine

  I've created an island in blender. 2048x2048 blender units. The engine developer wants me to split the terrain into 128x128 "chunks" so that would be 16x16 "chunks" from a top down view. The engine isn't using height maps, in order to allow caves, 3d overhangs, etc. I'm not in charge of the engine, so suggestions about that aren't needed here :/ I just need a good, seamless way to split a terrain mesh into 16x16 pieces without leaving holes. I'm very new to blender, so baby steps are very much welcomed :) Here's a quick render of what i've got so far.   I'm developing a prototype of a web application. I want to only use HTML, CSS and Javascript. I prefer to use my text editor and not having to learn (or pay, for that matter) a new tool like Axure. What would be, to your mind, the best practices? • Does seeding torrents affect the harddisk RAM caching?

  I've downloaded a lot of torrent files and while I'm seeding them, I've noticed that very often when I start the browser it's slow and the hard disk activity indicator is on. Usually when I start a program it gets cached in RAM and starting it again is very quick, and I have 3 GB of RAM so usually it stays cached nearly forever. But when my torrent client is seeding it seems that after an hour programs that I ran are no longer cached in RAM. I was thinking maybe it's because of the disk reads which the torrent client performs are cached and fill up RAM eventually. But I don't think they need to be, as they are read only once and are unlikely to be read again soon. So my questions are - is this the way I think, and if so is it possible in principle to prevent the disk reads from being cached? I can try to edit the source code of the program.

  I'm making a bunch of 2D games (now and in the near future) that use a 2D, RPG-like interface. I would like to be able to quickly paint tiles down and drop character sprites to create concept art. Sure, I could do it in GIMP or Photoshop. But that would require manually adding each tile, layering on more tiles, cutting and pasting particular character sprites, etc. and I really don't need that level of granularity; I need a quick and fast way to churn out concept art. Is there a tool that I can use for this? Perhaps some sort of 2D tile editor which lets me draw sprites and tiles given that I can provide the graphics files.

• Calculating adjacent quads on a quad sphere

  I've been experimenting with generating a quad sphere. This sphere subdivides into a quadtree structure. Eventually I'm going to be applying some simplex noise to the vertices of each face to create a terrain like surface. To solve the issue of cracks I want to be able to apply a geomitmap technique of triangle fanning on the edges of each quad, but in order to know the subdivision level of the adjacent quads I need to identify which quads are adjacent to each other. Does anyone know any approaches to computing and storing these adjacent quads for quick lookup? Also It's important that I know which direction they are in so I can easily adjust the correct edge.

  I just lost time trying to hide a CSS border in a third-party control, so it’s worth a quick post to help others avoid similar frustration. I could plainly see in the Internet Explorer 8 developer tool that an unwanted border in the Telerik RadRotator   was coming from the style classes named .RadRotator_Web20 and .rrClipRegion.   Now as the calendar year 2010 is close to its end, it's time for a quick wrap-up. The TV stations have shown all their flashbacks already in early December but we'll wait until end of the year ;-) I will post some pictures done by Roy or my throughout our travel in the next days. We've visited a lot of countries - and did more than 60 full-day Upgrade Workshops in 28 different countries: .
