• how to get wireless to work on my HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook on 12.04

  When my laptop ran XP, the wireless worked perfectly. Now the only way I get internet is having it wired in my living room - which is MASSIVELY inconvenient for me seeing as my room is outside. I have downloaded the driver from 'Additional Drivers', reset my computer (with difficulty, it also doesn't seem to like turning off, so I have to 'kill' it) and still nothing! I have looked all over the internet trying to find solutions but I just cant seem to get it to work. I have a USB wireless stick but I can't load the driver from the CD. I got this comment on a previous question: "Using either Snaptic Package Manager or Ubuntu's own Software Centre, remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" if it's already installed. Next, search for "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” and install both. Finally, running Software Sources and checking the Additional Drivers tab you should find Broadcom STA Wireless Driver that you can select, install and on reboot hopefully have wireless working ok..." Which I replied: "Right, so I tried to find/remove "bcmwl-kernel-source" but couldn't find anything. I managed to install both "firmware-b43-installer” and “b43-fwcutter” using terminal, after finding out how it worked. And lastly, I couldn't figure out how to find 'Broadcom STA Wireless Driver' - still no more additional drivers. And my wireless is still not working. My laptop has a button that turns wifi on and off and since I put Ubuntu on it, it hasn't worked. And also, my computer still doesn't seem to restart properly - it just gets stuck on the ubuntu loading screen." - hope that helps, somewhat I am VERY new to Linux, not very technical and in need of help! -Running Ubuntu 12.04 32bit on a HP Compaq nx6325 Notebook Thank you to anyone who replies, its much appreciated

• What actions to take when people leave the team?

  Recently one of our key engineers resigned. This engineer has co-authored a major component of our application. We are not hitting Truck number yet though, but we're getting close :) Before the guy waltzes off, we want to take actions necessary to recover from this loss as smoothly as possible and eventually 'grow' the rest of the team to competently cover the parts he authored. More about the context: the domain the component covers and the code are no rocket science but still a lot of non-trivial stuff. Some team members can already cover a lot of this but those have a lot on their plates and we want to make sure every. (as I see it): Improve tests and test coverage - especially for the non-trivial stuff, Update high level documents, Document any 'funny stuff' the code does (we had to do some heavy duct-taping), Add / update code documentation - have everything with 'public' visibility documented. Finally the questions: What do you think are the actions to take in this situation? What have you done in such situations? What did or did not work well for you?

• Hello!

  After many months of deliberating I have finally gotten around to starting this blog! The reason for doing this is the large number of half finished articles lying around on my hard disk, unpublished and unloved. These articles have been of huge benefit to me, and have been written in an attempt to consolidate my own thinking, in order to help me structure my thoughts and ideas as I have tried to digest new ideas and understand abstract theories. It is my hope that by tidying up these articles and publishing them here that I can continue this learning process by getting feedback on the ideas from within the developer community. i have worked with .NET for 8 years now, and have worked with ASP.NET, SQL Server, Windows programming as well as general network administration. Since 2004 my focus has been on integration, web services, and more often than not Biztalk Server. The last two years have seen me focus on SOA and WCF, and the Managed Services Engine, so this is probably where the main focus of the blog will to start with, but there are so many fun things to play with these days that i have no idea where it will end up.....   Barry

• Update get's stuck unpacking bad package, won't continue without it

  Removing the package from cache, and disabling Recommended Updates in Software Sources gives me an error saying I need to install this package. I've tried to update several times, but it keeps hanging on unpacking the ubuntu-sso-client package. Which forces me to hard-reset to unlock the package manager. I've tried: sudo dpkg --configure -a No errors sudo apt-get upgrade --fix-broken Wants me to reinstall said package, resulting in it hanging Removing the package: sudo rm -f /var/cache/apt/archives/ubuntu-sso-client_1.0.8-0ubuntu1_all.deb Results in the same effect, it re-downloads then hangs I can de-select Recommended Updates but I get error messages when I try to update again: E: The package ubuntu-sso-client needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it. Which won't let me continue Finally re-enabling the source, I try to remove ubuntu-sso sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-sso-client It removes a bunch of other packages but complains about the package: dpkg: error processing ubuntu-sso-client (--remove): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. Reinstalling ubuntu-sso-client hangs :( I'm at my wits end, any ideas? I would be nice to install all the other updates but this one is preventing it.

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • Headphones not working in ubuntu 12.04LTS

  So after a million warnings about not supported ubuntu OS, last night I finally upgraded to 12.04 - went somewhat smoothly (sadly) After my installation I got all excited with the exciting new look when I login, and all the new shebang, gently I installed chrome and went to youtube to check out some of my music and test flash in the process, now the sound worked awesomely, however when I plugged in my headphones, I could hear only a buzz-like sound when the base drops or there is a loud noise, maybe I didn't hear it from the headphones, but some other source. However sadly my headphones are not working, and I am a noob at fixing these stuff on Ubuntu. I've done loads of programming but when it comes to linux drivers and settings I seem to get frustrated. So I would really appreciate any help people! IN SUMMARY: My headphones are not working, my laptop's internal speakers are working awesome. To be as helpful as I can I have pasted the output from lspci -v to http://pastebin.com/VQNzDkZs I have also checked the volume levels from alsamixer and none are on mute. • My partition table is facing limitations; having problems creating more partitions

  I first noticed an issue when trying to install Linux Mint 14 as a third OS alongside Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7 - I was unable to create another partition to install Mint to. Poking around, I realised that I had reached the limit of primary partitions: (from left to right of the table) 1) a ~100 MB primary partition that I meant to use for storing Grub files but never got down to, 2) a 25 GB extended partition, with the entire partition containing an ext4 Ubuntu partition, 3) a ~513 GB partition containing Windows 7, 4) some ~50 GB of unallocated space, and finally 5) a 4 GB swap partition. I decided to wipe off the first ~100 MB partition, which I didn't need anyway. This brought me to a dilemma, however: as Ubuntu, during initial installation, had created an extended partition for itself, which meant that I could not create any more. Having an extended partition for Ubuntu is virtually useless as there is only enough space to contain Ubuntu itself, and the benefits of extended are worthless here. And if I go ahead and install Mint now, I would face the same issue of too many primary partitions in the future should I want to create any more. What I'd really like to do is this: convert the current extended partition into a normal primary partition, and create a new extended partition in the unallocated space for all future partitions. Is this possible, and if so how? Thanks in advance!

• An online version of ClearTrace

  When I visit clients for the first time and conduct a performance review I introduce them to ClearTrace. It’s still the best way I know to identify exactly which queries are consuming the most resources.  The downside is that it needs to be downloaded and create a database to store the results.  I finally decided it would be easier if I could just upload a trace immediately. You can find the online version of ClearTrace at TraceTune.com.  It provides a simple way to upload a trace file and see exactly which stored procedures or SQL statements consume the most CPU and disk.   This is still a work in progress as I try to determine exactly which features from ClearTrace are important.  I’ve also limited the file upload to 10MB in this beta release.  That might not sound like much but I get over 20,000 events using this stored procedure to generate the trace. If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday, I’d suggest a little performance tuning.  Generating 10MB of trace data doesn’t take long at all and in a short time you’ll see exactly which SQL statements you need to tune first.

• Integrating Amazon EC2 in Java via NetBeans IDE

  Next, having looked at Amazon Associates services and Amazon S3, let's take a look at Amazon EC2, the elastic compute cloud which provides remote computing services. I started by launching an instance of Ubuntu Server 14.04 on Amazon EC2, which looks a bit like this in the on-line AWS Management Console, though I whitened out most of the details: Now that I have at least one running instance available on Amazon EC2, it makes sense to use the services that are integrated into NetBeans IDE:  I created a new application with one class, named "AmazonEC2Demo". Then I dragged the "describeInstances" service that you see above, with the mouse, into the class. Then the IDE automatically created all the other files you see below, i.e., 4 Java classes and one properties file: In the properties file, register the access ID and secret keys. These are read by the other generated Java classes. Signing and authentication are done automatically by the code that is generated, i.e., there's nothing generic you need to do and you can immediately begin working on your domain-specific code. Finally, you're now able to rewrite the code in "AmazonEC2Demo" to connect to Amazon EC2 and obtain information about your running instance: public class AmazonEC2Demo { public static void main(String[] args) { String instanceId1 = "i-something"; RestResponse result; try { result = AmazonEC2Service.describeInstances(instanceId1); System.out.println(result.getDataAsString()); } catch (IOException ex) { Logger.getLogger(AmazonEC2Demo.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex); } } } From the above, you'll receive a chunk of XML with data about the running instance, it's name, status, dates, etc. In other words, you're now ready to integrate Amazon EC2 features directly into the applications you're writing, without very much work to get started. Within about 5 minutes, you're working on your business logic, rather than on the generic code that anyone needs when integrating with Amazon EC2.

• Why don't my Fn keys work for brightness or media after upgrading?

  I recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. After the upgrade, I can no longer adjust the screen brightness or the volume using keyboard (before the upgrade, using Fn+F4, Fn+F11, etc. worked). Using Fn+F2 to disable wireless still works, so I guess the Fn key itself is being recognised. I tried to follow the instructions here, but I don't have a file in /etc/X11 called xorg.conf. I also tried following this workaround, but it had no noticeable effect. I've also tried going to Settings ? Keyboard ? Shortcuts and reassigning the brightness and volume controls, both to the default keys and to new combinations. These changes don't have an effect even after rebooting. Googling has found bug reports where pressing the media keys brings up a "no entry sign" rather than changing the volume. When I press the keys there's no response at all. I've also seen various people say a workaround is to have totem running in the background; this doesn't work for me either. Finally, I tried installing keytouch; I was able to install keytouch-editor but got the message "Unable to locate package keytouch". Any more ideas? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me (even by pointing to a thread I've missed)!

• Changing the Default Install Location of an MSI

  A few months ago, I had to tweak an MSI installer.  It was installing into a specific directory (named the same as the application) underneath Program Files.  Since the location of Program Files can change from machine to machine, the MSI has a special token you can use for Program Files (as well as for the application name).  So the current value for “DefaultLocation” of the Application Folder was: [ProgramFilesFolder]\[ProductName] During installation, these tokens would be replaced by the actual location based on the current machine. I needed to change this to a specific folder underneath the users My Documents directory.  I poked around the help file and I could not find where these special tokens (like “[ProgramFilesFolder]”) were defined.  Obviously, there must be some specific set of values that are available and I’m sure My Documents is one of them. • How to deal with bad developers who hold back the project

  We're at the end of a project, but we continue to run into issues because of a single piece of the project. This piece is handled by a specific developer. Finally, we grabbed latest and started reviewing it. It's just horrendous code! Trying to step through it was difficult and it's a relatively simple workflow. The point of this question is, how to deal with this situation. The developer has a hard time accepting criticism (constructive or otherwise) and feels he is more knowledgeable than others on the team who are, well, highly decorated, experienced and accomplished developers. It's difficult to even get into a topic about development because it turns into "I know what I'm talking about and you're just wrong!" type of conversation. A request has already been put in to replace this developer but it is a hard sell since devs are in short supply where we are and this is a corporation with a LOT of political bs. Management has been notified a few times but nothing is happening.

• How to optimize a box2d simulation in action game?

  I'm working on an action game and i use box2d for physics. The game use a tiled map. I have different types of body: Static ones used for tiles Dynamic ones for player and enemies Actually i tested my game with ~150 bodies and i have a 60fps constantly on my computer but not on my mobile (android). The FPS drop as the number of body increase. After having profiled the android application, i saw that the World.step took around 8ms in CPU time to execute. Here are few things to note: Not all the world is visible on screen, i use a scrolling system Enemies are constantly moving toward the player so there is alaways to force applied to their body Enemies need to collide between each others Enemies collide with tiles I also now that i can active/desactive or sleep/awake bodies. Considering the fact that only a part of the enemies are possibly displayed on screen, is there any optimizations i can do to reduce the execution time of box2d simulation? I found a guy trying an optimization based on distance of enemies from the player (link). But i seems like he just desactives far bodies (in my case, i could desactive bodies that are not visible). But my enemies need to move even when they are not visible on screen, and applying forces will not workd on inactive bodies. Should i play with sleeping bodies here? Also, enemies are composed by two fixtures and are constantly colliding with each others and with tiles but i really never need to get notified about that. Is there anything i can do to optimize this kind of scenario? Finally, am i wrong to try to run simulation at 60FPS on mobile and should i try to make it run at 30FPS?

• Incomplete Ubuntu 12.04 install dual-boot XP

  This weekend has been the 1st time I've tried to install Ubuntu. On the initial install, (I am using a USB) the installation went all the way through and asked to restart when completed. I was not able to get grub to boot and kept going through Windows. After some research I found some articles on updating/reinstalling grub, so I followed those. I finally got grub to load after a day but there was no Windows option only the Ubuntu 12.04 which when I selected it only gave me a fatal error 17. I booted from the USB again and deleted the partitions and installed again. This time I got an error 15. I then booted through XP and downloaded the WUBI.exe and uninstalled Ubuntu and reinstalled again. The installation went to the very end and then gave an error message (which I don't remember exactly what it said) something along the lines of checking my logs on my C drive. I then uninstalled Ubuntu and removed the wubi.exe file and wiped my USB and did the download to the USB again. Booted through USB and ran the install process again. It again went through the install process but after creating username and password and hitting continue, the installation dialogue box disappears and the mouse spinning wheel is displayed, but I do not receive the prompt to restart. I can still access the side menu for Ubuntu but the wheel keeps spinning. How do I get Ubuntu to install properly?

• Process that needs a volume starting before volume mounts

  The destination for incoming CrashPlan backups on my server (11.04) is /media/SeagateBig (SeagateBig is the volume name of my 2TB USB drive). When the server boots, two things happen: 1) SeagateBig auto-mounts and 2) CrashPlan starts. The problem is, that often these two things don't happen in that order. Then I get: Crashplan starts looks for /media/SeagateBig doesn't find it instead of waiting for it, CREATES IT Now it's backing up onto my / filesystem. NOT COOL. Meanwhile, when SeagateBig finally gets around to mounting, it finds that /media/SeagateBig already exists, shrugs, and creates /media/SeagateBig_ as its mount point. What I need is a way for the order to be enforced - where SeagateBig mounts and then and only then the CrashPlan service is started. Unless I learn that CrashPlan can be told to wait for its destination directory, never to create it... which I am also investigating. But the CrashPlanEngine script is installed by the product so I am loath to modify it, as I know I could by having it loop until df greps successfully for "SeagateBig".

• Cloning from a given point in the snapshot tree

  Although we have just released VirtualBox 4.3, this quick blog entry is about a longer standing ability of VirtualBox when it comes to Snapshots and Cloning, and was prompted by a question posed internally, here in Oracle: "Is there a way I can create a new VM from a point in my snapshot tree?". Here's the scenario: Let's say you have your favourite work VM which is Oracle Linux based and as you installed different packages, such as database, middleware, and the apps, you took snapshots at each point like this: But you then need to create a new VM for some other testing or to share with a colleague who will be using the same Linux and Database layers but may want to reconfigure the Middleware tier, and may want to install his own Apps. All you have to do is right click on the snapshot that you're happy with and clone: Give the VM that you are about to create a name, and if you plan to use it on the same host machine as the original VM, it's a good idea to "Reinitialize the MAC address" so there's no clash on the same network: Now choose the Clone type. If you plan to use this new VM on the same host as the original, you can use Linked Cloning else choose Full.  At this point you now have a choice about what to do about your snapshot tree. In our example, we're happy with the Linux and Database layers, but we may want to allow our colleague to change the upper tiers, with the option of reverting back to our known-good state, so we'll retain the snapshot data in the new VM from this point on: The cloning process then chugs along and may take a while if you chose a Full Clone: Finally, the newly cloned VM is ready with the subset of the Snapshot tree that we wanted to retain: Pretty powerful, and very useful.  Cheers, -FB

• Useful WatiN Extension Methods

  I've been doing a fair amount of UI testing using WatiN recently – here’s some extension methods I've found useful. This checks if a WatiN TextField is actually a hidden field. WatiN makes no distinction between text and hidden inputs, so this can come in handy if you render an input sometimes as hidden and sometimes as a visible text field. Note that this doesn't check if an input is visible (I've got another extension method for that in a moment), it checks if it’s hidden. public static bool IsHiddenField(this TextField textField) { if (textField == null || !textField.Exists) { return false; } var textFieldType = textField.GetAttributeValue("type"); return (textFieldType != null) && textFieldType.ToLowerInvariant() == "hidden"; } The next method quickly sets the value of a text field to a given string. By default WatiN types the text you give it into a text field one character at a time which can be necessary if you have behaviour you want to test which is triggered by individual key presses, but which most of time is just painfully slow; this method dumps the text in in one go. Note that if it's not a hidden field then it gives it focus first; this helps trigger validation once the value has been set and focus moves elsewhere. public static void SetText(this TextField textField, string value) { if ((textField == null) || !textField.Exists) { return; } if (!textField.IsHiddenField()) { textField.Focus(); } textField.Value = value; } Finally, here's a method which checks if an Element is currently visible. • Sending Emails from existing SMTP host from Ubuntu Server

  I feel like my problem is very simple, but I've been trying for quite some time and haven't cracked it. You experienced server guys will probably laugh at this, but I'm finally at the point I need help or I'll never get anywhere. I have a little box running 12.04 LTS and I've wanted to script some status checks and have the server send me an email and schedule this with cron. I basically want a command line mail client that I can set up as easily as Thunderbird to send through my existing SMTP through the command line. Something that can easily be rolled into my bash scripts. I already have a remote host handling our email, SMTP, MTA, all that garbage. I don't particularly want to set up a relay just to send email when I have one that everyone else in the company already uses. I've tried, but there are too many aspects I don't understand AND I don't see why I should set up something local when we already pay for a remote host to do these things. If I absolutely have to set up sendmail or postfix, then so be it, but I'd appreciate a simple alternative. I'm open to practically anything at this point.

• What Computing/Programming Qualifications should I aspire for

  I am a computing science post graduate in my first job from after my degree. During my 12 month review my boss posed the question "What can we do for you in terms of progressing your career?". This got me thinking, after university I hadn't really thought about what other qualifications were available. So this is my question, what courses/qualifications should I be looking to do. Which are highly regarded and which would be really useful to complete. I've searched Google it but all I see is a jumble of courses with no idea of the credibility of each. Any help is much appreciated. I'm traditionally a systems architect, but with this job I've turned to more embedded work so Id like to edge towards electronics, embedded programming, real time OS to help with my work also it would be more likely to be accepted if it was related to my job. Finally UK based courses/ qualifications are a must as travel is probably out of the question. Help me grow as a programmer.

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. • Web Applications Desktop Integrator (WebADI) Feature for Install Base Mass Update in 12.1.3

  Purpose The integration of WebADI technology with the Install Base Mass Update function is designed to make creation and update of bulk item instances much easier than in the past. What is it? WebADI is an Excel-based desktop application where users can download an Excel template with item instances pre-populated based on search criteria.  Users can create and update item instances in the Excel sheet and finally upload the Excel data using an "upload" option available in the Excel menu. On upload, the modified data will bulk upload to interface tables which are processed by an asynchronous concurrent program that users can monitor for the uploaded results. Advantage: This allows users to work in a disconnected Environment: session time outs can be avoided, as once a template is downloaded the user can work in a disconnected environment and once all updates are done the new input can be uploaded. • Use the &ldquo;using&rdquo; statement on objects that implement the IDisposable Interface

  From MSDN : C#, through the .NET Framework common language runtime (CLR), automatically releases the memory used to store objects that are no longer required. The release of memory is non-deterministic; memory is released whenever the CLR decides to perform garbage collection. However, it is usually best to release limited resources such as file handles and network connections as quickly as possible. The using statement allows the programmer to specify when objects that use resources should release them. The object provided to the using statement must implement the IDisposable interface. This interface provides the Dispose method, which should release the object's resources. In my quest to write better, more efficient code I ran across the “using” statement. Microsoft recommends that we specify when to release objects. In other words, if you use the “using” statement this tells .NET to release the object specified in the using block once it is no longer needed.   So Using this block: private static string ReadConfig()         {             const string path = @"C:\SomeApp.config.xml";               using (StreamReader reader = File.OpenText(path))             {                 return reader.ReadToEnd();             }         }   The compiler converts this to: private static string ReadConfig1() {     StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(@"C:\SomeApp.config.xml");       try     {         return sr.ReadToEnd();     }     finally     {         if (sr != null)             ((IDisposable)sr).Dispose();     }   }
