  • Why isn't Japanese software industry as strong as their hardware technology?

    I admire Japanese technology and their innovation. They always seem to be one step ahead of everyone else. But why isn't their software industry just as developed? Why aren't there any Japanese operating systems, high-end game engines, 3D digital content creation applications? I would like to see their take on these and I think it could bring alot of innovation. Btw I mentioned 3D software because the animation industry is strong there as well, but they are using North American software for this.

  • What the different hardware temperatures listed in psensor, sensor viewer etc reffer to?

    I have installed psensor and see a list of temperatures, but listed as ”Temperature 1”, 2, 3 etc . I can only guess where the processor is: but who's who for sure? The same question stands for Sensors Viewer. I can also type sensors in Terminal but I get no more than that acpi -t gives Thermal 0: ok, 65.0 degrees C Thermal 1: ok, 37.9 degrees C Thermal 2: ok, 56.0 degrees C Thermal 3: active, 71.0 degrees C Considering psensor, I know for a fact that: - the temperature that varies most depending on the CPU use is Temp1 and it is one of the two highest - the other high temperature is Temp4 and it goes to the ceiling when using youtube/flash - Temp2 is very stable at a medium level of 50-60 degrees Celsius - Temp3 is by far the lowest and most imobile So, I guess Temp1 is the CPU temperature, and Temp4 is the GPU temperature. Temp2 and 3 must be the motherboard and the hdd. Does anybody know for sure?

    I've looked around and found several sites offering benchmarking statistics for mobile platforms and I've been seeing the unit of measure as "kTriangles/s". Originally I misread this, missing the 'k'; does this translate to "thousand(s) of triangles/s", e.g.: 8902 kTriangles/s = 8,902,000 triangles/s (I'm pretty sure that my interpretation is correct, but I hope someone can confirm this for me) Thanks!

  • Hardware question; booting ubuntu off of USB flash drive?

    I'm currently running ubuntu off of a USB 3.0 flash drive on my laptop, and I have another USB 3.0 flash drive I use for storing larger files that I need to access and whatnot. But the issue is that both of the usb 3.0 flash drives don't fit next to each other at all, so I'm forced to use another usb 2.0 port located in a different spot on my laptop. Now my question is that if I use a USB 3.0 hub will that slow my connections down at all? or cause some sort of interference? Another question I had which I was unable to find anywhere on the internet is if there was a USB 3.0 hub with more than one upstream connection? Thanks for your time!

    i am using lenovo b460 with 3 GB ram and 500 GB hard disk,(no graphics card). when i live boot Linux mint i was able to connect to WiFi.but when i booted up Ubuntu 11.4 i was not able to connect through WiFi.then later i installed Ubuntu 12.4 and then i got connected with WiFi, but after installing icons and themes through my unity i am not able to view the content in the terminal and the WiFi is also not connecting now even after i changed them all back. wireless connectivity

  • Choosing the right TV tuner - USB or PCI TV tuners, hardware/software, DVB? Hybrid/combo/analog?

    Greetings, I'll start with some background information so you know what I'm trying to accomplish and then get to my question. I work at a Television station in the US and we are working on setting up an online DVR/Podcast system for all of our newscasts. So basically we would be recording every newscast in HD, encoding it to flv/h.264 for viewing in a browser on flash compatible and iphone/ipad devices, eventually migrating to WebM when it's browser compliant. This task is theoretically pretty simple as it all it involves is a TV tuner device and a program like VLC, MythTV or whatever to schedule and dump it to a file, encode it with VLC/FFMPEG and push it to the streaming server. Now to the hardware, in order to accomplish that task, should I use an internal PCI tuner or a USB 2.0 tuner? Is there a difference? The bus speeds of both are not too far apart, and is the bus speed really relevant in this case? Does it matter if the device has a hardware encoder or a software encoder? On many sites the USB was recommended for ease of set up and use, but would it overly task a processor, or is that not a concern as long as it's a decent PC (at least duo core, 6gb ram). What's the difference between the stick USB and the Box USBs? To my understanding analog is basically gone in the US, so we would want a hybrid or combo tuner correct? How do those differ from DVB? Are there any other features or concepts which I am missing which may influence the recommended product. It would be ideal if the device which could work in both Linux and a Windows environment, to my knowledge most Hauppauge are?   • Can a hardware firewall block a server accessing its OWN UNC shares?

    I need to set up a UNC share for my hosted dedicated server to access a share on itself. Unfortunately TFS requires a UNC share. I am on a Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2 64bit dedicated server behind a PIX 501 firewall hosted with GoDaddy. I just cannot get the server to access itself and get this error: Windows cannot access \\SERVER\SHARE Check the spelling of the name.. etc. I've found numerous questions about this but no answer to my problem. Server 2008 Standard x64 SP2 Workgroup - not domain Windows Firewall is off Computer browser service is on I am trying to access \\MYMACHINE\TFS-BUILDS by typing in - or double clicking. Neither works. Machine has single network card Filesharing wizard says share was ok Share was showing under 'Computer management' Permissions are set to 'everyone' full control No obvious errors in eventlog Reboot didn't fix it Unfortunately I cannot try to access other shares in or out of this machine because it is a hosted dedicated server and the only machine behind a hardware firewall. The only thing left i can think of is that the hardware firewall needs to be configured. Is this possible? Does 'UNC traffic' go out of the machine and then back in again?

  • What's the piece of hardware listening on Facebook's or Wikipedia's IP address?

    I am trying to understand how massive sites like Facebook or Wikipedia work, for my intellectual curiosity. I read about various techniques for building scalable sites, but I am still puzzled about one particular detail. The part that confuses me is that ultimately, the DNS will map the entire domain to a single IP address, or a handful of IP addresses in the case of round-robin DNS. For example, wikipedia.org has only one type-A DNS record. So, people from all over the world visiting Wikipedia have to send a request to the one IP address specified in DNS. What is the piece of hardware that listens on the IP address for a massive site, and how can it possibly handle all the load coming from the requests for users all over the world? Edit 1: Thanks for all the responses! Anycast seems like a feasible answer... Does anyone know of a way to check whether a particular IP address is anycast-routed, so that I could verify that this really is the trick used in practice by large sites? Edit 2: After more reading on the topic, it appears that anycast is not typically used for dynamic web content. Anycast is usually used for UDP (e.g., DNS lookups), or sometimes for static content. One interesting thing to note is that Facebook uses profile.ak.fbcdn.net to host static content like style sheets and javascript libraries. Each time I ping this name, I get a response from a different IP address. However, I can't tell whether this is anycast in action, or a completely different technique. Back to my original question: as far as I can tell, even a large site will have a single expensive piece of load-balancing hardware listening on its handful of public IP addresses.

  • How do I lower the hardware volume? (volume too high)

    I have a 4yo Dell laptop with Windows XP Pro (modern ones unfortunately don't have a physical volume knob), and lately I'm using my Apple earphones, because they have much better low frequency response than my $10 earphones. They also have the side effect of being much louder. To give an indication of my agony, for most tasks (movie, music, games) I have my main volume at 3 ticks: drag to 0 with the mouse and press the up key 3 times (the handle does not even raise 1 pixel) and my wave volume at 50%. I notice that when I do this, I have a lot of digital noise, because I'm using just a tiny fraction of the 16-bit space. If I drag the Wave slider down until I barely hear the audio, it becomes really distorted and noisy, indicating that this is digital volume (in the DirectSound driver or something) and not hardware volume. I experimented in Audition. When I make a tone of 1000Hz at -50db, (all windows volumes at max) the volume is just below my pain threshold. When I zoom in to see how high the sample values reach, I see that just 8 of the 16 bits are used (about -100 ~ 100). When I generate such tone at -80db (minimum I can specify) then I can still clearly hear the tone, although really noisy. When I zoom in, I see that just 3 out of 16 bits are used. I created a squarewave tone that is just 1 bit high, and I can still hear it! For most uses, this is not a big problem (audiophiles will disagree!), as I just have more noise than usual (about the same as old 8 bit hardware), but I'm also in the process of programming a hearing test program, in which case this problem is a death blow as the test subjects will even hear tones at the bottom of the theoretical range (lowering the windows volume is futile, see above) (I cannot update drivers, as Dell has discontinued XP support for my model)

  • Zero downtime deployment (Tomcat), Nginx or HAProxy, behind hardware LB - how to "starve" old server?

    Currently we have the following setup. Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Tomcat on 8080 (TA) Box B running Tomcat on 8080 (TB) TA and TB are running behind LB. For now it's pretty complicated and manual job to take Box A or Box B out of LB to do the zero downtime deployment. I am thinking to do something like this: Hardware Load Balancer (LB) Box A running Nginx on 8080 (NA) Box A running Tomcat on 8081 (TA1) Box A running Tomcat on 8082 (TA2) Box B running Nginx on 8080 (NB) Box B running Tomcat on 8081 (TB1) Box B running Tomcat on 8082 (TB2) Basically LB will be directing traffic between NA and NB now. On each of Nginx's we'll have TA1, TA2 and TB1, TB2 configured as upstream servers. Once one of the upstreams's healthcheck page is unresponsive (shutdown) the traffic goes to another one (HttpHealthcheckModule module on Nginx). So the deploy process is simple. Say, TA1 is active with version 0.1 of the app. Healthcheck on TA1 is OK. We start TA2 with Healthcheck on it as ERROR. So Nginx is not talking to it. We deploy app version 0.2 to TA2. Make sure it works. Now, we switch the Healthcheck on TA2 to OK, switch Healthcheck to TA1 to ERROR. Nginx will start serving TA2, and will remove TA1 out of rotation. Done! And now same with the other box. While it sounds all cool and nice, how do we "starve" the Nginx? Say we have pending connections, some users on TA1. If we just turn it off, sessions will break (we have cookie-based sessions). Not good. Any way to starve traffic to one of the upstream servers with Nginx? Thanks!

  • ZooKeeper and RabbitMQ/Qpid together - overkill or a good combination?

    Greetings, I'm evaluating some components for a multi-data center distributed system. We're going to be using message queues (via either RabbitMQ or Qpid) so agents can make asynchronous requests to other agents without worrying about addressing, routing, load balancing or retransmission. In many cases, the agents will be interacting with components that were not designed for highly concurrent access, so locking and cross-agent coordination will be needed to avoid race conditions. Also, we'd like the system to automatically respond to agent or data center failures. With the above use cases in mind, ZooKeeper seemed like it might be a good fit. But I'm wondering if trying to use both ZK and message queuing is overkill. It seems like what Zookeeper does could be accomplished by my own cluster manager using AMQP messaging, but that would be hard to get really right. On the other hand, I've seen some examples where ZooKeeper was used to implement message queuing, but I think RabbitMQ/Qpid are a more natural fit for that.     I need to create an ASP.net page that has a control on the page that has a five-level TreeView on the left side of the page, and accounting balances on the right side the coincide with each breakdown in the tree. Top level is company, next is group, next is program, etc... and the balances break down accordingly. I've seen that there are controls out there such as TreeView/ListView combination controls that can do this. Is there any tutorials or help out there on how to go about accomplishing this without paying for controls? Could a treeview do this alone by spanning data across the entire length of the columns since every level will have totals on it?

There are multiple rows in both tables. Say the first row in Table_2 has a Total_amt=100. I would want to know that in Table_1 the rows with D_ID 2, 6, 12 summed = 100, the rows D_ID 2, 3, 42 summed = 100, etc. Help appreciated. Let me know if I need to clarify. I am asking this question as someone as part of their job has a list of transactions and a list of totals, she needs to find the possible list of transactions that could have created the total. I agree this sounds dangerous as finding a combination of transactions that sums to a total does not guarantee that they created the total. I wasn't aware it is an np-complete problem.

  • Can I use this power supply + case combination without causing problems?

    I am putting together a computer with a Antec P180 case and a Thermaltake TR2 RX 650 W power supply. The problem is that the Antec P180 case has a separate compartment for the power supply. With an opening for the on/off switch + ac connector to one side, a wall with a small hole for cables to route through on top, a wall on the bottom, and on the other side a fan which pushes air from the hard drive compartment to the power supply compartment. I think the design of the case assumes the power supplies fan is on the side next to the on/off switch, but the fan on the power supply I have is on top, which makes me worry about overheating the power supply. There is about half an inch between the top of the power supply and the wall and the other fan should keep air flowing to push out the air that the power supply pushes upwards. Do you think this setup should work, or should I go get another power supply? Thanks!! PS: This computer will be running an Ubuntu server, so it will always be on, but the rest of the components shouldn't be generating as much heat as they would on say a gaming machine.

  • Does using cat5e cables yield any disadvantages in combination with cat6/cat6a network?

    If I were to have a fully compliant cat6 or cat6a network running through my walls... that is to say, wires and jacks... What would be the concequence of plugging a cat5e wire into one of the jacks? I'm assuming that it would still run at cat5e standards, but obviously not cat6/6a standards because the whole connection is not cat6. I only ask because it seems silly to me to make a bunch of cat6 patch cables for connections that don't really matter, like standard desktop computers and other equipment. Or will doing so hamper the whole network?

    There are times after I eject a USB Flash drive, I want to copy some more files over to the USB Flash drive. In this case, do I always need to unplug the drive and plug it back in? Is there a way to "reconnect" or "un-eject" the drive? To eject, that are two ways: 1) Right Click the drive (say H:) and choose Eject 2) Click "Safely remove hardware" from the icon tool But there seems to be no way to un-eject or reconnect a drive.

  • How can I disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key combination completely on XP/Vista/7?

    I have been googling extensively to figure this out, and nobody seems to be able to give a direct answer. Let me start by saying that I'm NOT talking about requiring CTRL-ALT-DEL to enter logon information. I'm working on a golf simulator program which is used at golf centers. I need the ability to completely disable the CTRL-ALT-DEL key sequence so that the golf center customers can't get out of the program and access the computer at all. I realize there are other key combinations that need to be handled as well, we already have this entire feature working in XP, but we're going to be switching to Windows 7 soon, and CTRL-ALT-DEL is the only one that doesn't seem to work in Win7. I'd really like an all-around solution if at all possible. This same program may also be installed on a client's personal computer for an in-home golf simulator, but the computers that really need this feature (golf center computers) are provided to the golf center by us, so would the best option be to write a new shell? I don't know anything about that at all, other than others that suggest writing a new shell for kiosk mode. I'd really like a simpler option, like modifying the registry in some way. I have heard that you can remove some buttons from the menu screen that pops up, but unless I can remove pretty much all of them (including the shutdown/restart button in the bottom-right corner), this won't be enough of a solution for me.
