Hi, I received from my distributer a wrong OEM version of a windows7, I dont have time to send it back and wait for an other.
Can I use the UK product key with a dutch dvd? (the one I used myself)
I restarted my system today and after logging in, i could see see nothing but a black screen with mouse pointer. I can start task manager via alt+ctrl+del, Task manager and msconfig show fine but when i try to run 'explorer' nothing happens.
In safe mode everything seems fine.
I do not have any system restore points and repair options from the DVD show "this option is not available for the selected OS"
I've also updated my graphic drivers. Didn't help
I can't turn off my ATI adapter. I have applied the fix, but still lspci | grep VGA gives
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 LP [Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series] (rev ff)
and my power consumption is about 15W (Wi-Fi on).
I run ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-14-generic. BIOS version 2.30
I have Windows XP 32-bit installed on this computer. I just purchased a Windows 7 64-bit as an ISO download upgrade version which I promptly burned to DVD and attempted to perform an upgrade installation. Here is the error message I am getting:
Firstly, where are these "Setup log files" located?
Second, does this mean I need to find compatible (64-bit?) drivers for the Mainboard and put them on floppy?
I have a bluray player that has a USB interface that allows me to plug external hard drives and pendrives for me to play movies or music files.
I was wondering if it's possible to have the PC or notebook or any other computer-like device using a USB-USB cable and make the bluray player detects this as an external drive.
Note: I'm using a bluray player as example but it can be the same for DVD players, TV or sound sytems.
Hi everyone,
Are there any way known to trick an computer with XP to appear to have more RAM?
I need to install a specific program (which fits in my system requirements), which is bundled with a number of other programs on an DVD.
Unfortunately, the other programs besides the one that I need demand twice the amount of RAM that's available on my computer and the installation is closed due to this. Can I trick my XP computer into have more RAM temporarily to bypass the block in the install executable?
Thanks
I just bought a new solid state drive, and I'd like to copy all of the files and setup from my current Mac OS X hard drive onto it. What is the best way to do this?
I have a 1TB external hard drive, my drive backed up on Time Machine, and Snow Leopard on a DMG, but no external mount for the SSD, and no install DVD (it's at my parents house, promise). I'm familiar with the command line and booting up Mac OS X from a hard drive.
Yesterday I installed an SSD in my MacBook and kept my original HDD with a "data doubler" (replaces the DVD-drive with a hard-drive bay).
That means I have my OS (and applications) on both my SSD and HDD. Is it possible to get rid of the OS on the HDD?
I think that removing everything but the ~/users-folder from the HDD should solve this problem, right? If not, what is the best solution to achieve this?
This is my step by step process on a Dell Inspiron 6000 with a brand new 320 HD:
Turn on Laptop
Insert Xubuntu 9.1 disc
Boot to CD-rom
After boot has finished, I install and instance of Xubuntu on the machine
After install (without any errors), I reboot the the machine
On reboot, the BIOS claims to be unable to read from device
What could this be? (Feel free to ask for more information to perform a proper diagnosis)
I have a slow machine, mainly a Celeron with 250gb HD.
I'm planning to install a Linux distro and create a bunch of VMs for development.
Which distro should I choose? I plan to use this machine mainly as a small "hypervisor" to other vms.
Is it possible? What do you suggest?
Thanks!
I have a Dell 2350 I am upgrading. I want a 1TB or greater HD, but of course this Dell only uses IDE HDs. I have found an option of using an SATA to USB adapter. Has anyone done this before and if so how were your results? Would you recommend this for my situation?
I downloaded the ISO of Windows 7 RC but I don't have a CD/DVD big enough to burn. I have an empty flash drive with plenty of space, is there anyway I can put the ISO on it and install from it as if it were a CD?
Hi there!
I tried running DxDiag (DirectX diagnostics), and I noticed that my graphics card is set to the onboard one that comes with the Core i5 processor (some Intel HD stuff).
On my computer, I also have a dedicated graphics card (an Nvidia 310). No serious gaming stuff, I know - just for programming.
However, I would still love to know how to switch to that dedicated graphics card instead.
My laptop is an MSI CX720.
I have two AMD Radeon HD 6870 video cards in CrossFireX configuration and I would like to add a third monitor. I understand to use "Eyefinity" you need to use an active mini displayport to DVI adapter. I am not interested in the benefits of "Eyefinity", I just want a third monitor with Windows extended desktop.
Is it possible to use either the HDMI head on the first card or the DVI heads from the second card to get a third monitor running without "Eyefinity" and an active adapter?
I have an iso file of operating system's set up.
Now, I don't have dvd burner right now.
But the alternate - 4gb pen drive is available.
If I copy entire iso file to pen drive,
Can my system boot through pend drive?
I am building a small computer to hook up to my tv for playing some games and playing media. I would like to find a board with both HDMI and standard RCA hookups that would be powerful enough to play full HD video (if it has an embedded cpu).
I came across the VIA VB8003 which seemed to fit my needs but it doesn't seem to be widely available.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
I have a plasma TV with USB input (can play divx and etc) but what I would like to do is use a software to turn a folder in my notebook HD (windows 7) into a USB Mass Storage device, so that I can connect the TV to the PC using a USB cable so that the TV recognize the PC folder as a flash drive / usb mass storage.
is seems MAC has something like what I need:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
So there must be a similar to windows!
Could someone with more PC building experience than me tell me whether these PC components can cooperate fully as a self-made PC?

Thanks in advance! (btw, I know 32 GB RAM is unnecessary, but I want to buy it to use as a reserve)
Windows Vista introduced ReadyBoost which lets you use a Flash drive as a third (after RAM and HD) type of memory.
It occurred to me that I could boost peformance on an old PC here w/ Win XP (32 bit, max'd at 4GB RAM) by putting it's swap file (page file) on a flash drive.
(Now, before anyone comments: apparently Flash drives (10-30MB/s transfer rates) are slower than HDD (100+ MB/s) (I'm asking that as a separate question on this forum).

I have a Dell XPS 420. I've installed Windows 7 RTM (x64)
I have this audio device: SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio
I have tried using the windows 7 basic driver, and also the Vista 64-bit driver from Dell's website (details):
Date: 10/29/2007
Version: 6.10.0.5511, A04
File Size: 7 MB
With both drivers, I get normal stereo sound from the driver, but my 5.1 surround sound doesn't work. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a fix?

I'm really embarrassed to ask this question, but it would be more stupid to lose data over this.
Is it safe to place an external hard drive on top of my desktop case. I have a DVD/CD reader between the top of the case and the hard drive of the desktop. I know magnets and disk drives are not the best of friends, but are two disk drives in close proximity enough to mess each other up?
Our SVN server hd was full. Deleted a load of unwanted data on there, and all appeared to be well. However, new check-ins are now failing.
Can't move
'/repos/db/txn-protorevs/1000-vr.rev'
to '/repos/db/revs/1/1001': Permission

1000-vr.rev does not exist. There are two other files in there: 9-9.rev and 9-9.rev-lock
Edit: I have checked file permissions just in case, and all is as it should be.
If I am correct to assume that once I place a DVD/disk in my optical drive (or use a USB flash drive or external HDD for that matter; for arguments sake) that this action would in effect trigger an 'event' in Windows.
I would like to use this 'triggered event' to enable an entire copy of that device.
Example:
if my optical H: reads a disk OR the user closes the tray OR ...
then xcopy /S H: "F:\Copy of H"
