• General High-Level Assessment

  Guys and Gals, I've been tasked with a doozy of an assignment. The objective is something akin to "laying of hands" on several database servers which work in concert to provide data to various Web, Client-Server and Tablet-Sync'd distributed Client-Server programs. More specifically, I've been asked to come up with a "Maintenance Plan" which includes recommendations for future work to improve these machines' performance/reliability/security/etc. Might there be some good articles on teh interwebs ya'll could point me towards which would give me some good basis to start? Articles describing "These are the top 4 overarching categories and this is how you should proceed when drilling down on each of them" sort-of-thing would be fabulous. The Databases are all SQL 2005, however the compatibility level is 80 and they were originally created with ERwin based on SQL 6.5. The OSs are all Windows Server 2003. Thanks all! Tim

• How to install Active Directory Users and Computers for Windows 2008

  I want to install the administration tools on a Windows Server 2008 (R1) machine. On Windows 2003 you installed adminpak.msi, but I can't find such a file for 2008. Is this a "feature" in Server Manager? If so what is it named? ---UPDATE--- So I drilled into the server Features list and I have "Remote Server Administration Tools" but it only includes File Services, Print Services and Web Server. This is a member server in a domain but not a domain controller. It is Windows 2008 (original) not R2. Still, why can't it run AD users and computers from this machine?

• UNIX "find" command, match literal "dot"

  I need files ending with ".pdf" or ".png"; here's my attempt: find /Users/robottinosino/Desktop/_PublishMe_ -type f -regex '.*[pdf|png]' this incorrectly includes files ending with "Apdf", "Zpdf", etc. (missing literal dot before file extension) I tried adjusting the pattern to: find /Users/robottinosino/Desktop/_PublishMe_ -type f -regex '.*\.[pdf|png]' but then no results are returned. Escaping the . with a backslash does not work. Why? • Using 64 bit wuauclt from 32 bit command prompt

  I have a script that for legacy reasons needs to run inside a 32 bit command shell. This script also includes references to certain core windows binaries - most notably wuauclt but others as well - which are not accessible by default within the 32 bit environment. This script is being run in several locations including many windows 7 and server 2008 r2 boxes. I'm aware of the possibility to copy files from the system32 to syswow64 in order to get around this. Is there any better method - something along the lines of adding an entry to the path variable - which will allow me to fall back to these 64 bit binaries from within a 32 bit script?

• How can I get ssh-agent working over ssh and in tmux (on OS X)?

  I have a private key set up for my github account, the passphrase to which is, I believe, stored in OS X's keychain. I certainly don't have to type it in when I open a terminal window and enter ssh [email protected]. However, when I'm running bash over an ssh session, or locally inside a tmux session, I have to type in the passphrase every single time I attempt to ssh to github. This question suggests that a similar problem exists with screen, but I don't really understand the issue well enough to fix it in tmux. There's also this page which includes a fairly complicated solution, but for zsh. • Insert escaped characters in seq command separator

  How do I insert a string containing escaped characters (\n, \t, etc) as separator for the seq command? The standard format includes a newline character: $ seq 3 1 2 3 But if I try to add something plus a newline, the backslash is escaped and a literal "\n" is used instead: $ seq -s "$\n" 3 1\n2\n3 The same happens using simple quotes, no quotes, or other escaped characters: $ seq -s "\t" 3 1\t2\t3 $ seq -s \t 3 1t2t3 This is not the standard behavior for commands such as echo, so I'm a bit confused here... Edit: Ideally, I'd like a somewhat portable solution (that works in tsch as well as bash, for instance), and without resorting to Perl or other languages.

• include all vim files in a folder

  For my .bashrc I have a lot of small snippet files in .config/bash, like 10-prompt.sh and so on. In my actual .bashrc, I just have the following: configdir="$HOME/.config/bash" for file in "$configdir"/*.sh do source "$file" done I'd like to do the same for my .vimrc, but I am not that confident in VimL that I could write that. How would the snippet for .vimrc look like that includes all the snippets in a given subfolder? Ideally, I'd like to make a .vim/rc/ folder where I can put my snippets into.

• How to work with code examples in Apple's Keynote?

  I'm creating a presentation in Keynote on the Mac. It is intended for an audience of Java developers, and has some slides that contain blocks of Java code. Even with a monospaced font, I find the TextBox feature to be difficult in terms of formatting. Crazy Bob has an article on how he handled it in 2004 (he creates PDFs from the code samples and then includes those). However, I would like to know if there have been any changes since then. How do you work with code examples (Java, C#, Javascript, whatever) in Keynote?

• Warning in Apache log: Cannot get media type from 'x-mapp-php5'

  I have no idea what is causing this issue, but it seems to be related to the displayed file (just a simple index.php to print phpinfo) being in an aliased directory. Any suggestions what I can do to avoid the warning? Here's an excerpt from my httpd.conf: <Directory "<dir with broken php>"> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> Alias /smartersoftware/ "<broken dir>" <FilesMatch \.php$> SetHandler application/x-httpd-php </FilesMatch> The last three lines were required to make php work at all (which I found a bit strange, and it may or may not be related to my problem). Adding a AddType application/x-mapp-php5 .php didn't change anything.

• Create a Windows 7 System Repair ISO?

  According to the Microsoft website I can run "Create a system repair disc" from the start menu to burn a recovery Disc. However, there are many situations (including not having a disk drive) where this cannot be done. My goal is to create a bootable USB drive according to this guide but their method to do so without burning a physical disc includes downloading an ISO from "somebody's" website. I don't know who "somebody" is and I feel it is reasonable to not boot something I can't verify as being untampered with. To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft does not host a recovery disc ISO for download as this would be the easiest solution. So my problem is that I'd like to circumvent Microsofts "burn to disc" option with a "burn to ISO" through any reasonable means.

• What does a WinForm application need to be designed for usability, and be robust, clean, and profess

  One of the principal problems impeding productivity in software implementation is the classic conundrum of “reinventing the wheel”. Of late I am a .NET developer and even the wonderful wizardry of .NET and Visual Studio covers only a portion of this challenging issue. Below I present my initial thoughts both on what is available and what should be available from .NET on a WinForm, focusing on good usability. That is, aspects of an application exposed to the user and making the user experience easier and/or better. (I do include a couple items not visible to the user because I feel strongly about them, such as diagnostics.) I invite you to contribute to these lists. LIST A: Components provided by .NET These are substantially complete components provided by .NET, i.e. those requiring at most trivial coding to use. “About” dialog -- add it with a couple clicks then customize. Persist settings across invocations -- .NET has the support; just use a few lines of code to glue them together. Migrate settings with a new version -- a powerful one, available with one line of code. Tooltips (and infotips) -- .NET includes just plain text tooltips; third-party libraries provide richer ones. Diagnostic support -- TraceSources, TraceListeners, and more are built-in. Internationalization -- support for tailoring your app to languages other than your own. LIST B: Components not provided by .NET These are not supplied at all by .NET or supplied only as rudimentary elements requiring substantial work to be realized. Splash screen -- a small window present during program startup with your logo, loading messages, etc. Tip of the day -- a mini-tutorial presented one bit at a time each time the user starts your app. Check for available updates -- facility to query a server to see if the user is running the latest version of your app, then provide a simple way to upgrade if a new version is found. Maximize to multiple monitors -- the canonical window allows you to maximize to a single monitor only; in my apps I allow maximizing across multiple monitors with a click. Taskbar notifier -- flash the taskbar when your backgrounded app has new info for the user. Options dialogs -- multi-page dialogs letting the user customize the app settings to his/her own preferences. Progress indicator -- for long running operations give the user feedback on how far there is left to go. Memory gauge -- an indicator (either absolute or percentage) of how much memory is used by your app. LIST C: Stylistic and/or tiny bits of functionality This list includes bits of functionality that are too tiny to merit being called a component, along with stylistic concerns (that admittedly do overlap with the Windows User Experience Interaction Guidelines). Design a form for resizing -- unless you are restricting your form to be a fixed size, use anchors and docking so that it does what is reasonable when enlarged or shrunk by the user. Set tab order on a form -- repeated tab presses by the user should advance from field to field in a logical order rather than the default order in which you added fields. Adjust controls to be aware of operating modes -- When starting a background operation with, for example, a “Go” button, disable that “Go” button until the operation completes. Provide access keys for all menu items (per UXGuide). Provide shortcut keys for commonly used menu items (per UXGuide). Set up some (global or important or common) shortcut keys without associating to menu items. Allow some menu items to be invoked with or without modifier keys (shift, control, alt) where the modifier key is useful to vary the operation slightly. Hook up Escape and Enter on child forms to do what is reasonable. Decorate any library classes with documentation-comments and attributes -- this allows Visual Studio to leverage them for Intellisense and property descriptions. Spell check your code! • mod_rewrite issue | Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects

  ok what Im doing normally works but since my rule "includes" itself is giving me issues and can't find a solution after hours working on different options. I have a .htaccess with: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/3.15.0/(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /3.15.0/$1 [L] this is for my software versions, I have a program that can request sometimes versions that are updated and in the server may be behind a couple version so I want to be able to say that whatever is comming in forward to the latest version that in this example is 3.15.0 /var/www/nameblabla/3.15.0 my .htaccess is on /var/www/nameblabla/.htaccess so the first Condition is to ignore request that already has the right path and version.. the second should be to grab all request and forward to 3.15.0... and of course not loose the path to the files I want from inside that should be the same. so far I can only get it to redirect to such directory but will loose the path and others I get the "Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects" I guess this is because Im including the 3.15.0 path Any help or another way to do this with out mod_rewrite?

• How can I use encryption with Gmail?

  I'm currently reading Cory Doctorow's novel Little Brother which includes a part about encrypted messaging, and even wrapping messages first in my private key and then your public key. I'd like to play around with that but from what I've googled so far it seems to be a rather convoluted process, requiring installing several program components, and creating an encrypted message requires doing some manual file manipulation. I'm surprised that I can't find something like a Firefox plugin that integrates encryption into Gmail. I've seen that there is a Thunderbird PGP plugin, but I don't use T-bird. I also saw a blog post that Google apparently toyed with PGP support in 2009, but nothing has appeared in the meantime. Question: To use encryption with Gmail, is there a simpler method than creating a file locally, then encrypting that file, and finally attaching it to a regular Gmail message?

• AIDL based two way communication

  I have two apps between which I want some data exchanged. As they are running in different processes, so, I am using AIDL to communicate between them. Now, everything is happening really great in one direction (say my apps are A and B) i.e. data is being sent from A to B but, now I need to send some data from B to A. I noticed that we need to include the app with the AIDL in the build path of app where the AIDL method will be called. So in my case A includes B in its build path. For B to be able to send something to A, by that logic, B would need A in its build path. This would create a cycle. I am stuck at this point. And I cannot think of a work around this loop. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) . Thanks! ----EDIT---- So, I following the advice mentioned in one of the comments below, I have the following code In the IPCAIDL project the AIDL file resides, its contents are package ipc.android.aidl; interface Iaidl{ boolean pushBoolean(boolean flag); } This project is being used as a library in both the IPCServer and the IPC Client. • Problems with Black Box KVM

  I just recieved a shipment of equipment orderd by my predicessor that includes brand new Dell Optiplex 990 computers, with standard mice and keyboards. Also included were Black Box ServSwitch Secure KVMs. I've worked with KVMs before and hypothetically they should be the easiest thing in the world to deal with, plug it all together, push the button, go. However, for the life of me I can't get the computers to recognize the mouse or keyboard when plugged into the KVM. We've seen this with multiple KVMs across the order. Any one know what I'm missing? Computers are all Dell 990 with Windows 7.

  I'm running Magento on Nginx using this config: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/1_-_installation_and_configuration/configuring_nginx_for_magento. Now I want to 301 all URLs without trailing slash to their counterpart that includes a trailing slash. For example: /contacts to /contacts/. I've tried virtually all the nginx directives on this I could find, but to no avail. For example, the directive specified in nginx- Rewrite URL with Trailing Slash leads to a redirect to /index.php/. Which directive should I add and where?

• Thunderbird 11.0.1 reply address issues

  I'm running Thunderbird 11.0.1 under Linux Mint 12 for all my email addresses (all IMAP). I have recently found that when I reply to an email it only includes the recipient's email address in the reply on a random basis. More often than not, I have to add them in each time. If it did it all the time I would think it was a setting but random being random, I can't pin this one down. I have reinstalled without any change. Any ideas?

• Winamp trashed its local media library database when I blocked it on my firewall -- Is this supposed to happen?

  Frankly, I don't see a compelling reason why Winamp needs to be using my network, as all I do is listen to songs from my local media. However, it appears to exact revenge when I try to ensure it can't on my firewall by completely eradicating my media library list (which includes all my song ratings and such). I was not able to recover this data, as I hadn't exported the database prior, and the actual database file was completely wiped. My other playlists and the actual media itself appear not to be effected, though. Is this supposed to happen, by chance? Edit: I wasn't able to get it to replicate this behavior with a different firewall+Winamp version. Hmm.

• Is there a way to automate testing for a GNS3 network topology?

  I'm working on an MPLS backbone topology using GNS3, this topology includes configuration of several networking technologies such as IPv6, BGP, OSPF, IPv6 to IPv4 dynamic tunneling, MPLS based VPNs, MPLS based traffic engineering... So I'm a beginner with basic knowledge in networking (Ipv4 addressing, basic routing and switching) and I can't just easly test if my topology works or not, moreover fiddling with configuration I've noticed that sometimes when getting MPLS config right and missing BGP config all my topology is messed up. Given that I use Cisco 7200 series routers, is there any way to build a test harness for my topology in order to guarentee correctness with a single push button automated process?

• What's a fast way to copy a lot of files from an internal hard-drive to external (USB) storage?

  I have a large amount of data - about 500 GB - on the internal hard drive of a desktop PC. This includes music, videos, PDFs... you name it. I want to copy everything to an external USB hard drive (1.5 tb capacity). The desktop PC runs Ubuntu. To being with, I simply plugged in and mounted the hard drive and dragged the top-level folder onto the drive. It's started copying, but it seems to be proceeding very slowly. About 10 minutes later and it's only done about 500 MB. I'm sure this is slower than what I could achieve with less total data. So I'm wondering if there's a quicker way of doing this. Would it be better to copy it in portions of 500MB or so, rather than all at once?

• How to locally resume a session that has been started remotely using xrdp?

  Can I connect to a RD session that has been started (and abandoned) from a remote machine using xrdp? Also I'd like to be able to do the exact opposite: to remotely login to a session that has been initiated locally. I'm trying to get as close as possible to how Windows RS behaves. (Which also includes that the session would use my terminal machine/monitor resolution. I wasn't able to achieve that using VNC.) Suggestions to a better alternative to xrdp are welcome please. I don't know Linux too much.

  I had a working configuration this morning with the following simple /etc/rc.conf ifconfig_rl0="DHCP" ifconfig_xl="inet 192.168.1.11 netmask 255.255.255." defaultrouter="192.168.1.1" I added the following lines: firewall_enable="YES" firewall_type="SIMPLE" firewall_logging="YES" sshd_enable="YES" apache_enable="YES" mysql_enable="YES" my httpd.conf includes: NameVirtualHost 192.168.1.11 <VirtualHost 192.168.1.11> ... </VirtualHost> now apache and ssh server are down. changed rc.conf back to last working configuration and still no ssh or apache apachectl start #--> /usr/local/sbin/apachectl start: httpd could not be started apachectl status #--> Looking up localhost Making http connection to localhost Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.

• PHP database selection issue

  I'm in a bit of a pickle with freshening up my PHP a bit, it's been about 3 years since I last coded in PHP. Any insights are welcomed! I'll give you as much information as I possibly can to resolve this error so here goes! Files config.php database.php news.php BLnews.php index.php Includes config.php - news.php database.php - news.php news.php - BLnews.php BLnews.php - index.php Now the problem with my current code is that the database connection is being made but my database refuses to be selected.   My setup includes: Cisco router An i-7 PC running windows A laptop with high speed wifi nic, which I want to check its throughput. I would like to run an FTP server on the PC. hook the router over cables to the PC. I would like to have the PC create its own subnet accessible via the cisco router that would be hooked directly to the PC's nic. From the laptop I want to connect via wifi to the PC's wireless router and connect to the ftp server on the PC. is it possible? how do i connect the router to the PC nic and make it broadcast a subnet via wifi for my laptop to connect to? how do i configure an FTP server to operate only on this subnet?
