• What is the point in using real time?

  I understand that using real time frame elapses (which should vary between 16-17ms on average) are provided by a lot of frameworks. GetTimeElapsedSinceLastFrame, and it gives you the wall clock time. But should we use this information in basic physics simulation? It looks to me to be a bad idea. Say there is a slight lag on the machine, for whatever reason (say a virus scanner starts up). The calculations all jump, and there is no need for this. Why not use a virtual second and ignore wall clock time? For gameplay on the level of Commander Keen, shouldn't you always use the virtual second and not real-time? (Besides stopwatch timing for race games) I don't see a need to use real time and not a fixed 16ms time step.

• How can one get involved in the Ubuntu Brainstorm team?

  I've heard it thrown around on a lot of blogs that Ubuntu Brainstorm is the "graveyard of good ideas". I have a bit of a passion for average end-users suggesting the kinds of software they want and they way they think their applications and computers could work. I'm interested in joining the Ubuntu Brainstorm team, maybe to facilitate ideas not getting buried and making it not seem like a dead platform. Unfortunately I'm not very plugged into the "community" so I'm not sure how to go about it. I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

• Good analytics tools that can track visitor actions from a particular source?

  Are there good tools that can track what actions a certain subset of visitors (i.e. from a particular source) do once they're on your site? As far as I know (which could be wrong), Google Analytics can't do this beyond telling you how long they stayed, bounce rate, and average number of pages. I'm looking for something that can tell me which links they clicked on, and if possible break it down per-visitor. Free solutions would be great, but I'm anticipating that this would require a paid solution.

• When profiling a function for time use, what information is desirable?

  I'm writing a program similar to Python's timeit module. The idea is to time a function by executing it anywhere from 10 to 100,000 times depending on how long it takes and then report results. I've read that the most important number is the minimum execution time because this is the number that best reflects how fast the machine can run the code in question in the absence of other programs competing for processor time and memory. This argument makes sense to me. Would you be happy with this? Would you want to know the average time or the standard deviation? Is there some other measure that you consider more important?

• Vertex data split into separate buffers or one one structure?

  Is it better to have all vertex data in one structure like this: class MyVertex { int x,y,z; int u,v; int normalx, normaly, normalz; } Or to have each component (location, normal, texture coordinates) in separate arrays/buffers? To me it always seemed logical to keep the data grouped together in one structure because they'd always be the same for each instance of a shared vertex and that seems to be true for things like character models (ex: the normal should be an average of adjacent normals for smooth lighting). One instance where this doesn't seem to work is other kinds of meshes like say a cube where the texture coordinates for each may be the same but that causes them to be different where the vertices are shared. Does everybody normally keep them separate? Won't this make them less space efficient if there needs to be an instance of texture coordinates and normals for each triangle vertex (They won't be indexed)? Can OpenGL even handle this mixing of indexed (for location) vs non-indexed buffers in the same VBO?

• Temenos WealthManager: performance benchmark on Exadata

  Temenos WealthManager is at work in financial institutions of all sizes. No matter the size, each of Temenos’ customers has one requirement in common: a need for fast technology. This led Temenos to conduct a performance benchmark, running its WealthManager platform on Oracle Exadata Database Machine. During the study, Temenos executed high-intensity financial engines two- to three-times faster than its previous internal benchmarks and/or largest customer throughput. The company also demonstrated greater than two-times the average improvement in response times for six-times the number of users and data volumes. Further, Temenos secured a two-times gain in service-level agreements for batch and user-oriented workloads via dedicated or parallelized processing windows. Last year Temenos also communicated the availability of its T24 core banking system and how the benchmark run demonstrated the ability of Oracle’s Exadata platform to comfortably support the highest banking volumes for T24. • Using Subjects to Deploy Queries Dynamically

  In the previous blog posting, we showed how to construct and deploy query fragments to a StreamInsight server, and how to re-use them later. In today’s posting we’ll integrate this pattern into a method of dynamically composing a new query with an existing one. The construct that enables this scenario in StreamInsight V2.1 is a Subject. A Subject lets me create a junction element in an existing query that I can tap into while the query is running. To set this up as an end-to-end example, let’s first define a stream simulator as our data source: var generator = myApp.DefineObservable(     (TimeSpan t) => Observable.Interval(t).Select(_ => new SourcePayload())); This ‘generator’ produces a new instance of SourcePayload with a period of t (system time) as an IObservable. SourcePayload happens to have a property of type double as its payload data. Let’s also define a sink for our example—an IObserver of double values that writes to the console: var console = myApp.DefineObserver(     (string label) => Observer.Create<double>(e => Console.WriteLine("{0}: {1}", label, e)))     .Deploy("ConsoleSink"); The observer takes a string as parameter which is used as a label on the console, so that we can distinguish the output of different sink instances. Note that we also deploy this observer, so that we can retrieve it later from the server from a different process. Remember how we defined the aggregation as an IQStreamable function in the previous article? We will use that as well: var avg = myApp     .DefineStreamable((IQStreamable<SourcePayload> s, TimeSpan w) =>         from win in s.TumblingWindow(w)         select win.Avg(e => e.Value))     .Deploy("AverageQuery"); Then we define the Subject, which acts as an observable sequence as well as an observer. Thus, we can feed a single source into the Subject and have multiple consumers—that can come and go at runtime—on the other side: var subject = myApp.CreateSubject("Subject", () => new Subject<SourcePayload>()); Subject are always deployed automatically. Their name is used to retrieve them from a (potentially) different process (see below). Note that the Subject as we defined it here doesn’t know anything about temporal streams. It is merely a sequence of SourcePayloads, without any notion of StreamInsight point events or CTIs. So in order to compose a temporal query on top of the Subject, we need to 'promote' the sequence of SourcePayloads into an IQStreamable of point events, including CTIs: var stream = subject.ToPointStreamable(     e => PointEvent.CreateInsert<SourcePayload>(e.Timestamp, e),     AdvanceTimeSettings.StrictlyIncreasingStartTime); In a later posting we will show how to use Subjects that have more awareness of time and can be used as a junction between QStreamables instead of IQbservables. Having turned the Subject into a temporal stream, we can now define the aggregate on this stream. What follows next is the crucial part of tapping into the Subject and adding another query that runs in parallel, using the same query definition (the “AverageQuery”) but with a different window length. • Would it be practical/secure to import my GPG keys into (Open)SSH?

  I know a bit about computer security, and well as about the concept of public and private keys. I also know that both GPG and (Open)SSH use the public/private key system. My question is, is there any reason that I would not want to use my GPG keys as authentication for SSH? Please note that, while a have a little bit more experience with Linux, GPG, and SSH than the average computer user, I am by no means an expert. • How can I disable update checking on boot?

  I'm running off of a thumb drive with very average read/write speeds and automatic update checks makes the bootup far less pleasant. Since I manually update via apt there's truly no need to notify me like on a normal desktop. In older versions of Ubuntu there was an item to disable this behavior. On 12.04 this is no longer the case. would it be the 'unattended-upgrades' item in /etc/init.d? If yes, would simply removing the init script would solve my problem?

• Targeting a vehicle with complex movement?

  Targeting a vehicle with known constant velocity is simple, and collision is guaranteed. Imprecise AI can be modeled by adding a small error factor. But how would one go about targeting a vehicle whose movements are more complex? Perhaps it's evading the AI or another game object. I've been thinking about how I'd do it myself in a FPS (in which bullets have finite speed) and think there might need to be at least couple of targeting modes based on the target's movement in the previous second or so: If it's near linear (peak acceleration in a certain range) target with the linear model If it's highly irregular (perhaps size of bounding box of recent positions could be used?) , target at an average For now I can assume 2d space, AI is stationary and projectile moves linearly.

• What encryption algorithm/package should I use in a betting game type situation?

  I have a betting type site where I publish a number (between 0-100) that is encrypted. Then after a period of time, I would review what the number is and prove it with a key to decrypt the encrypted number to prove that I'm not cheating. I also want it to be easily verifiable by an average user. What encryption algorithm/technique/package should I use? I'm no expert on cryptography. There seems to be so many options out there and I'm not sure what to use. python friendly is a plus.

Recently, I want to relocate and find out there are not that many PeopleSoft development out there. 90% of the vacant positions are contract type of jobs. I'd rather get a full time permanent position. In PS, I do a lot of maintenance rather than new programming. It does get very boring.   I was having an argument with a friend who claims that given roughly equal skill, someone with a college degree from a name school is going to start at a significantly better job (e.g. a higher-end company) for his first job; and because of this, he's also going to be significantly ahead for his second job. Here are my two questions: given equal skill, how much does college factor into a programmer's overall career? if someone has the technical skills to work competently as as programmer, is it worth it for him to go to college first? if the degree is significant, is it significant whether the degree is from an average college or a higher-tier college (e.g. Stanford, MIT)?

  Given: vm - a WinXPsp3 virtual machine hosted by a Win7sp1 physical machine alice is the user on vm srv - a Win2008R2sp1 server bob is the user on srv quake - a linux server mark is the user on quake Both vm and srv have the same new installation of cygwin (1.7.9) and openssh.   Hi Guys, I am doing a project concerning robot simulation and i need help. I have to simulate the activities of a robot in a warehouse. I am using mindstorm robots and lego's for the warehouse. The point here is i have to simulate all the activities of the robot on a Java GUI. That is whenever the robot is moving, users have to see it on the GUI a moving object which represents the robot. When the roads/rails/crossings of the warehouse changes it must also be changed on the screen. The whole project is i have to simulate whatever the robot is doing in the warehouse in real-time. Everything must happen in real-time I am asking which libraries in Java i can use to do this simulations in real-time and if someone can also point me to any site for good information. Am asking for libraries in Java that i can use to visualize the simulation in real-time. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks for your help.

• What's are the best readings to start using WPF instead of WinForms?

  Keeping in mind what CannibalSmith once said - "All the answers are saying "WPF is different". That's a huge understatement. You not only have to learn lots of new stuff - you must forget everything you've learned from Forms. It's a completely new way of doing UI." .. and having many years of experience with visual Windows desktop applications development (VB6, Borland C++ Builder VCL, WinForms) (which is hard to forget), how do I quickly move to developing to say well-formed WPF applications with Visual Studio? I don't need boozy-woozy graphics to give my app look and feel of a Hollywood blockbuster or a million dollar pyjamas. I always loved tidiness of standard Windows common controls and UI design guidelines, end even more I enjoyed them under Vista Glass Aero Graphite sauce. I am perfectly satisfied with WinForms but I want to my applications to be built of the most efficient and up-to-date standard technologies and architectured according to the most efficient and flexible patterns of today and tomorrow, leveraging interface-based integration and functionality reuse and to take all advantages of modern hardware and APIs to maximize performance, usability, reliability, maintainability, extensibility, etc. I very much like the idea of separating view, logic and data, letting a view to take all advantages of the platform (may it run as a web browser applet on a thin client or as a desktop application on a PC with a latest GPU), letting logic be reused, parallelized and seamlessly evolve, storing data in a well structured format in a right place. But... while moving from VB6 to Borland C++ Builder was very easy (no books/tutorials needed to turn it on and start working) (assuming I already knew C++), moving from BCB to WinForms was the same seamless, it does not seem any obvious to me how to do with WPF. So how do I best convert myself from a WinForms developer into a right-way thinking and doing WPF developer?

• Javascript: Collision detection

  Hello, could someone please help me to understand how collision detection works in JS? I can't use jQuery or gameQuery - already using prototype - so, I'm looking for something very simple. Not asking for complete solution, just point me to the right direction. Let's say there's: <div id="ball"></div> and <div id="someobject0"></div> Now the ball is moving (any direction). "Someobject"(0-X) is already pre-defined and there's 20-60 of them randomly positioned like this: #someobject {position: absolute; top: RNDpx; left: RNDpx;} I can create an array with "someobject(X)" positions and test collision while the "ball" is moving... Something like: for(var c=0; c<objposArray.length; c++){ ........ and code to check ball's current position vs all objects one by one.... } But I guess this would be a "noob" solution and it looks pretty slow. Is there anything better?

I just spent an hour and a half shortening my classpath by moving libraries around and even moving my eclipse install, but with no luck. Any ideas about where I should start to look for an answer? The error message doesn't include any information about what directory it's in or anything. It's kind of infuriating! Is it possible to make the output of javaw more verbose? Is it possible to get around this class-path size bug?

• Member initialization while using delegated constructor

  I've started trying out the C++11 standard and i found this question which describes how to call your ctor from another ctor in the same class to avoid having a init method or the like. Now i'm trying the same thing with code that looks like this: hpp: class Tokenizer { public: Tokenizer(); Tokenizer(std::stringstream *lines); virtual ~Tokenizer() {}; private: std::stringstream *lines; }; cpp: Tokenizer::Tokenizer() : expected('=') { } Tokenizer::Tokenizer(std::stringstream *lines) : Tokenizer(), lines(lines) { } But this is giving me the error: In constructor ‘config::Tokenizer::Tokenizer(std::stringstream*)’: /path/Tokenizer.cpp:14:20: error: mem-initializer for ‘config::Tokenizer::lines’ follows constructor delegation I've tried moving the Tokenizer() part first and last in the list but that didn't help. What's the reason behind this and how should i fix it? I've tried moving the lines(lines) to the body with this->lines = lines; instead and it works fine. But i would really like to be able to use the initializer list. Thanks in advance!

• Groovlet + Tomcat: "unable to resolve class" when importing libraries

  I'm having some trouble running a groovy servlet (groovlet) in tomcat that imports a library class. When I don't import anything the groovlet works correctly, but if I do import something that I expect to be on the classpath (I can import the same class successfully in a regular servlet), I see the following error: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy java.lang.RuntimeException: groovy.util.ScriptException: Could not parse scriptName: /MyGroovlet.groovy at groovy.servlet.GroovyServlet$1.call(GroovyServlet.java:123) ... Caused by: org.codehaus.groovy.control.MultipleCompilationErrorsException: startup failed, /MyGroovlet.groovy: 1: unable to resolve class com.mycompany.mypackage.MyLibraryClass @ line 1, column 1. The jar containing MyLibraryClass is in shared/lib, which is loaded by tomcat by the following in catalina.properties: shared.loader=...,${catalina.base}/shared/lib/*.jar,... My groovlets are mapped as described in the user guide in my application's web.xml: <servlet> <servlet-name>GroovyServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>groovy.servlet.GroovyServlet</servlet-class> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>GroovyServlet</servlet-name> <url-pattern>*.groovy</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> And here's the code for the groovlet, MyGroovlet.groovy: import com.mycompany.mypackage.MyLibraryClass MyLibraryClass.someStaticMethod() My groovlet is deployed to WEB-INF/groovy/MyGroovlet.groovy, per the GroovyServlet API. When I visit http://localhost:8080/myapplication/MyGroovlet.groovy, the error described previously is written to my application logs. Is there some way that I need to explicitly declare the runtime classpath for GroovyServlet? I've tried moving the library jar to several places, including WEB-INF/lib and moving the actual MyLibraryClass.class file to WEB-INF/classes, but with no luck.
