• Is it OK to push my code to GitHub while it is still in early development?

  I have some projects that are in a very early development state. They are nowhere nearing completion but I do host them (as public repos) on GitHub because: I have multiple computers and I want access to my code everywhere I want a backup for my code I want it to be easy if someone wants to collaborate in some way I use GitHub Issues as a poor man's project management software Is it OK to publish a project on GitHub even when it is very early in the development? I am a bit concerned about someone to come by and say OMG this is total BS, this code is so bad! while looking at unpolished/still in development/not tested code. What are your practices when you start new public projects? Do you wait until you have something substantial to show or you create a bare repo directly on GitHub and start from there? I used GitHub throughout this post but this applies to every code hosting service out there.

• FTP won't open a connection to client

  I am running Windows server 2008 on Ubuntu server 12.04.1 via devstack and I am trying to download a file from an ftp server using the windows command line ftp client. When I run the ftp get command I get the following error message: 500 I won't open a connection to 10.0.0.2 (only to XX.XX.XX.XX) 425 No data connection 10.0.0.2 is the internal IP address of the instance, whereas XX.XX.XX.XX is the external address. Is there anyway to make the ftp client use the external address for the data connection, or alternatively have the client establish the connection? Thanks

• Customizing Texmaker

  I use LaTeX a lot but I find quite obnoxious all the crappy files it leaves behind when you compile: .aux, .log... Fortunately TeXMaker has the option "clean" that deletes all of these. However, I don't like having to remember to click on it every time I'm going to close a document, ie I'd like a button that both closes a document and cleans all that stuff. Any hint as how to do it? I suppose if I knew how to access the program code I'd be able to do it as I'd just have to put together two options that already exist. Thanks

• Mechanics of reasoning during programming interviews

  This is not the usual "I don't want to write code during an interview", in this question the assumption is that I need to write code during an interview (think about the level of rewriting the quicksort or mergesort from scratch) I know how the algorithm work or I have a basic idea of how I should start working from there, i.e. I don't remember the algorithm by heart I noticed that even on a whiteboard, I always end up writing bugged code or code that doesn't compile. If there's a typo, whatever I usually live with that.. but when there's a crash due to some uncaught particular case I end up losing confidence in my skills. I realize that perhaps interviewers might want to look at how I write code and/or how I solve problems rather than proof-compiling my whiteboard code, but I'd like to ask how should I approach the above problem in mental terms, i.e. what mental steps should I follow when writing code for an interview with the two bullet points above. There must be a unique and agreed series of steps I should follow to avoid getting stuck/caught into particular exception cases (limit cases) that might end up wasting my time and my energies rather than focusing on the overall algorithm for the general case. • Oracle Open World 2012

I'm presenting in a session entitled "What’s New with Oracle VM Server for x86 and SPARC Architectures: A Technical Deep Dive", along with Adam Hawley. We'll be talking about Oracle's overall virtualization strategy, what's new with Oracle server virtualization on both x86 and SPARC, as well as an update on Oracle's virtualization management capabilities. • Making diff output more readable

  I'm looking for a tool that will take diff / debdiff output (and more specifically, the output of this script) and display the result of the comparison in a highly readable, graphical way. Any pointers would be appreciated. Ideally, it would be the GTK+, FOSS equivalent of MDR. Meld, Diffuse and similar software are not fit for this purpose, since they're intended to work standalone, and don't take input from stdin.

• Is this the most effect simple way to display a moving image? SDL2

  I've looked around for tutorials on SDL2, but there isnt many so I am curious i was messing around and is this an effective way to move an image. • Where can I get fresh new Wine DLLs?

  I was acting careless today and I accidentally deleted one of the .dlls in my Ubuntu Wine installation, ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/ole32.dll to be exact, and need a new fresh copy of only this one .dll. I know that reinstalling will fix it, but I have installed quite a few programs and do not want to have to do such a drastic thing just to fix this one problem. So, I'm wondering if there is somewhere that I can download this original .dll as it came with my original Wine installation. I have found the SourceForge repository, but it only has .h and .c files and I do not know how to build them into a .dll. Can anyone give me a link to download, or instructions to build my missing .dlls?

• 11.10 does not restore open apps in hibernate, works like shutdown

  I noticed that my 11.10 does not hibernate. When I hibernate, and starts PC, it doesn't restore all my open apps etc. Its like a shutdown ... why might that be? UPDATE Output from gsettings http://pastie.org/2926504 Using a vanilla Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 installed yesterday (no more from alternate CD, but problem still persists) I dont see any options in BIOS for S1, S3 or ACPI, are they hidden somewhere? • Creating an install drive - can not open output file autorun.inf

  I am trying to make an install/boot drive for a computer that has no operating system and no optical drive. I used the ISO from Ubuntu.com and the burner from pendrivelinux.com. When the program starts writing to the flash drive, there is an error displayed that says : "0 can not open output file E:\autorun.inf" But continues to write data. After it has finished, I remove the drive and insert to the other computer and turn it on, but it never finds a drive to boot from. What is causing this problem and how can I fix it ?

  Silverlight has a method called HtmlPage.PopupWindow() that opens new web browser window with a specific page. You can find this method in the namespace System.Windows.Browser. If you haven’t in your project, add a reference to System.Windows.Browser. • Ctrl-Alt-T doesn't open terminal

  I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 and I've been using for a while now as ran it from a daily build about a month ago. It's fully updated with updates, upgrades an dist-upgrades and it was working up until very recently. Not sure exactly when I last issued a Ctrl+Alt+T as I quite often just leave it running however it will have been certainly in the last week. Basically when I hit that key combo I do not get a terminal. I know that each of the keys function as I can Atl+Tab through open applications and I can Ctrl+C to copy and past Ctrl+V to paste and I've typed plenty here that has a "T" in it. I have checked Keyboard Layout in Settings and the correct combo is assigned to the terminal. You'll have to take my word for that as I'm not allowed to post my screenshot!!!!!

• Should I fork for a major re-write that uses a small amount of the original code?

  I'm writing a library. It's a completely rewritten version of another one, to suit my needs (PCL compatibility, mainly). However, the API will be completely rewritten, as I'll need to change a lot of stuff around for PCL compliance. Also, as it is a rewrite, I won't be able to just start from the library and just change it bit by bit, as I typically see with forks. I tried that, but it just didn't work. So what should I do? Should I fork here or should I make a new library?

  I have an ASP web service that uses the Crystal Reports API to download an Excel report. Now, there is a few things I do not like about the Excel report that Crystal generates: - The column widths are static (as in they are not adjusted for the content). - I can't format the header row to be bold - If I suppress a data column in the report, it comes out in the Excel spreadsheet as a blank column. I currently use PHP to open the excel file, autosize the columns, bold the heading and remove blank columns, although using the PHPExcel class for this doesn't work well when the spreadsheet is only a few 100kb in size. I am thinking if I move this activity into the .NET web service, the performance will be much better. Does anyone know an efficient way of opening a Excel file and performing the operations listed above?

• LibreOffice can't open a spreadsheet

  I have been editing my-file.ods almost daily using LibreOffice. Today it hanged at one point. I had to reboot the laptop. Now the file cannot be edited. When it is opened for editing, a warning is issues: Document file is locked for editing by unknown user. If I open the file for editing despite the stated hiccup and edit it and then try to save it, I am prompted to save it under another name. But I don't want to change the name.

They allow the user to type code in say Ruby or Python, this is then sent to the server and the output posted back to the browser. Are there libraries available for in-browser code validation? How would you approach this? Suggestions?

• Ubuntu 12.04 Hangs with Software Center open then opening Dash Home

  I have a Dell D610 - Intel graphics - 1 Gig RAM. I have test the hard drive and RAM and both are fine. When I open Software Center, then Dash home my system locks up. The mouse cursor moves but is unresponsive if I try to right or left click anything. The keyboard is totally unresponsive and I have to hold the power button to power off! I have reinstalled from CD, did all updates but the issue persists. I tried using the track pad only, and I plugged in an external mouse also but no change. Everything else works great ! I am sick of running Vista and have no love for Metro! Thanks for any suggestions, on a scale of 1 to 10 (Newbie - Expert) I am about 3

  I've been running at a fast pace for the past few days, so I'm going to add a few posts here to catch up. Day 3 of the DevDays event in the Netherlands was a success.   I'm trying to get Nexus Mod Manager (Beta yet) working on wine, but after the configuration of NMM it crashes with an error. During the startup it spams alot of terminal stuff and at the end I find this error. ###!!! • can't open youtube or vimeo

  I can't open Youtube.com on computer with lubuntu and mint. I see that my flash works properly on other sites. Problem is in for example on youtube (yming.com loading without endless) and vimeo. I tried to use firefox and chromium. I thought that it would be problem with dns (I have dns from DHCP - opendns) so I changed to google dns but it didn't help to solve problem. When I use text browser - Links these site are opening well in text mode. I think that the problem is with flash or java. On other computer with windows connected to the same network these sites are being opened without problem. I am on the point that I don't know what to do next, because I tried to install and uninstall flash several times. I tried Flash-Aid as well.
