• Best/ most efficient way to learn a programming language as a beginner [closed]

  I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

• Jenkins Build fails when artifacts are not there

  I use Jenkins to run some integration tests on a web appilcation (using cucumber, capybara and selenium) Everytime a test fails, a screenshot, the HTML source and a video of the process is saved. the path structure looks like this: results/output/<test_name>/<files> I use the archive artifacts feature of Jenkins to provide the files (pattern: results/output/*/*). It works great. However as soon as a build succeeds, there are no screenshots/videos etc... and the build fails because Jenkins cannot find the files for the pattern. Is there a way to tell Jenkins to succeed without having the files present? I don't want to do a dirty hack which involves creating an empty folder structure like result/output/success/hooray.txt.

• Is it possible to setup a DHCP server only for local virtual machines?

  I have a quick question. I have a bunch of virtual machines (VMWare Workstation) running on an Ubuntu server and have found that VMWare NAT (DHCP) service is unreliable and slow. I have to use NAT instead of bridging because the server is in a data-center that does not have DHCP and I don't have enough static IP's for all the VMs. Is it possible to setup the host (Ubuntu) to be a DHCP server but only for the local virtual machines? The server has 2 network interfaces, so I'd set eth0 to be a static IP, which connects to the outside world, and eth1 to listen for DHCP. Now, I am thinking if I don't want DHCP to broadcast I would just not connect a cable to eth1 and setup the VM's to use bridging on eth1. That way DHCP would not broadcast through my network but be listening on that interface. Would that setup work?

  Hello There, I'm trying to figure out where I could drop in some PHP code to notify a CRM we are using (Solve360) that a new order has been placed, and that an event should be created (API) to fulfill the order. Order Product Checkout Complete Checkout & Capture CC Side notify CRM Done Not sure where to start, but I have had to make some small tweaks to fix the Quantum Gateway payment processor to work. In that module it appears that the objects for the order (email, amt, details) were available. However it seems it would be quite 'dirty' to insert more PHP code in there. Ideas? • nvidia-package in 12.10 somehow not same like in 12.04 resp. X-lib not complete?

  Not knowing if this has to do with new kernel-update automatic done by ubuntu 12.10 ? it seems that kernel 3.2 in 12.04 has not these problems with nvidia-drivers ? I tried to install the actual google-earth as deb-package with dpkg -i it seems to be no problem, but when I type command: google-earth in terminal, there comes up the report among else: Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". Xlib is installed completely and nvidia-driver is de-installed (then reboot) then re-installed again. the report of google-earth stays the same: Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0". ubuntu 12.04 was working quite good with google-earth. however: bumblebee seems to be taken out of program ? ( or needs to be re-edited ? ) Don't hurry too quick with solution, I can wait !

  Those familiar with Scala IDE will know about the great testing environment offered by the Scala Worksheet. You can scribble and scratch, much like in the REPL, but with all the goodness added by the IDE as a whole (refactoring, saving, error checking, etc). When you create a worksheet, it is created with the .sc extension, and also creates a artifact under a hidden directory called .worksheet. This is all fine and dandy, but should one include these in your public .git repositories? People who does not use Scala IDE (or older versions) may find these files confusing. On the other hand, making some of your experiments public to developers who are using Scala IDE, may give them a quick start into experimenting and learning the project.

• No sound into headphones

  I will make it quick : I have no sound in my headphones when they are plugged in on my Asus F200CA running Ubuntu 14.04, but : I have sound in the laptop speakers when the headphones are plugged out. If I boot up my laptop on a Live USB running Ubuntu 14.04, I have sound in the speakers and in the headphones. If I open pavucontrol, I can "see" sound, but I can't hear it. I already did some of the actions listed here. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, with Unity, and this bug appeared about a week ago.

• WAS Non-HTTP activation - hooking application startup

  I'm trying to integrate a netTcpBinding based application that is hosted inside WAS with an IoC container (autofac/spring). Unfortunately, when it starts inside WAS and due to the fact that it is not an Http based application, no events are fired inside the Global application class. I need to catch the application domain startup so that I can configure the IoC container. Is there any way to do this when hosting in WAS? I've seen horrible things involving using static classes inside App_Code folders, but I'd like something somewhat more testable and not quite as dirty.

Coming to news my site is kind of a mashup. It gathers data from various sites and presents them in more user friendly way for quick digestion and access. My problem here is that since the news part of the site can be found from other sites, my site could suffer in search rankings. Is there any solution to this. One thing I thought of is to put disallow on all the news ariticles pages, so google does not crawl them. Will this be helpful to me. What is the correct way to format such a query? • Podcast site - Serve audio files with CDN

  I am managing a small podcast website hosted on a shared server. Currently there are only eight or nine episodes, each of which are about 50 MB, so bandwidth is not really an issue at the moment. However, looking forward, would it be feasible to use a "free" CDN like Cloudflare to serve the audio files? If so, how would I set this up? I took a quick look at it before, and it seems you have to have your whole site routed (is that the right term?) through the CDN rather than just specific files or filetypes. I'd like some clarification on this.

• Replacing text with a link in jQuery

  I'm trying to replace a small part of text in a large HTML document with my own element which I create on the fly. The text may be a huge bulk of text, html, images, what-ever, and what I want is to find the first (or all) the position of a certain string, and replace it with an element that I create using $('< span'). Using simple text.replace('the string', $('< span')); doesn't do the trick (I'm left with [object Object] and not the actual < span that I want. The reason I don't just inject direct HTML is because I want to retain all the binds that are related to the object I'm creating. and doing a replace with a custom ID, and then attaching binds to the ID after the HTML has been altered, seems a bit dirty. • Upgrade from 12.04 to 13.10: Computer won't boot

  I upgraded from 12.04 to 13.10 and my computer boots to a black screen. I hear the drumroll, but there is no functionality after that. I've downloaded a livecd of 12.04 on my other computer, and I changed the BiOS settings to boot from CD/DVD first, but it still does the same thing. I booted advanced options, edited [ro quick splash] to [ro nomodeset] and it started normally. I rebooted the system and it was back to the same junk. What do I need to do while it is operating to make it reliable with every restart? This seems to be a systemic issues with NUMEROUS Ubuntu upgrades, but I haven't read a solution yet. I need some help, please! Thanks.

• C/C++ memory usage API in Linux/Windows

  I'd like to obtain memory usage information for both per process and system wide. In Windows, it's pretty easy. GetProcessMemoryInfo and GlobalMemoryStatusEx do these jobs greatly and very easily. For example, GetProcessMemoryInfo gives "PeakWorkingSetSize" of the given process. GlobalMemoryStatusEx returns system wide available memory. However, I need to do it on Linux. I'm trying to find Linux system APIs that are equivalent GetProcessMemoryInfo and GlobalMemoryStatusEx. I found 'getrusage'. However, max 'ru_maxrss' (resident set size) in struct rusage is just zero, which is not implemented. Also, I have no idea to get system-wide free memory. Current workaround for it, I'm using "system("ps -p %my_pid -o vsz,rsz");". Manually logging to the file. But, it's dirty and not convenient to process the data. I'd like to know some fancy Linux APIs for this purpose.

• Inserting x200s into (ultrabase) docking station mirror screen is always activated leading to non optimal resolution

  Builtin LCD should be 1440x900 External LCD should be 1920x1080 If X200s is inserted into docking station the option mirror screen is always activated leading to a resolution of 1152x864 which looks terrible on the builtin and external lcd. My manual configuration for docking mode (seperate screens with maximum resolution) should be respected, but "Make Default" button has no consequences. • Are MongoDB and CouchDB perfect substitutes?

  I haven't got my hands dirty yet with neither CouchDB nor MongoDB but I would like to do so soon... I also have read a bit about both systems and it looks to me like they cover the same cases... Or am I missing a key distinguishing feature? I would like to use a document based storage instead of a traditional RDBMS in my next project. I also need the datastore to handle large binary objects (images and videos) automatically replicate itself to physically separate nodes rendering the need of an additional RDBMS superfluous Are both equally well suited for these requirements?
