• Momentary freezes about every 60 seconds

  I have just switched from OpenSuse to Ubuntu (the only reason is poor repositories - I got tired of installing everything from tar-balls). OpenSuse KDE worked flawlessly. Off-topic OS 7 does too. However, Ubuntu 13.04 after all updates keeps freezing about every minute. The time differs between occasions. It halts just for a fraction of a second, too quick to notice, but music crackles, and compressed video looses its tracks and covers with errors until a scenecut. I don't know what is responsible, the logs are clear. Tried to: change audio card, switched to Nvidia drivers and back, paused all unneeded daemons. Didn't help much. Any ideas where to look? I am experienced in Linux, just new in Ubuntu.

• Listing SQL Columns

  When I am writing up stored procedures in SSMS sometimes I need to know what column types are used in a table. For instance I will know the table name but I might not remember exactly the length of a varchar column or if a column stored the data as an integer or varchar. And I may not want to scroll through all the tables in Object Explorer to find the one I want. A lot of times it is easier if I can just write a quick query to pull up the information I need. The syntax to do something like this is pretty easy. SELECT COLUMN_NAME, DATA_TYPE, CHARACTER_MAXIMUM_LENGTH FROM yourdbname.information_schema.columns WHERE TABLE_NAME = ‘yourtablename’ After running that you will get a listing in the Results pane just like any other query with the column name, data type and length (if any).   We are a small company looking to run our software on devices with a Single Board Computer. We are deciding which vendor to go with. It would be nice to hear your recommendations. Doing a quick search for "Single Board Computer vendors" yields several options. WinSystems, Tri-M, etc. Based on your experience which of these companies do you recommend? We need to run Windows XPe. The board needs to be x86, with USB and ethernet interfaces. I agree that this is really close to off-topic. And almost like asking which car company do you like?

• (Phaser) Preload Future States in Create?

  I'm a first time user of Phaser, been trying to make a simple point and click type game. I'm trying to keep things very modular, so I'm defining a list of levels (states) in a JSON, and then every level has its own JSON containing the objects within that level. However, I'm encountering an issue in that, when changing states, I get a black flash while the assets for the next state load (this happens whether I iterate through the JSON list or define everything manually). From what I've read, all sprites should be loaded in the preload stage, however, by doing this I'm causing that tiny but noticeable black pause. I know one way would be to simply load every asset at the start of the game, but that seems incredibly inefficient (wouldn't that fill up the memory immensely?). I would rather load a state's assets from the "parent" state. However, in my quick test (which maybe I did wrong) it seems that game.load doesn't work properly if done within the create stage? What is the best approach to doing this?

So I want to remove the background of each image. How to do that ?

• What happens if we serialize and deserialize two objects which references to each other?

  To make it more clear, this is a quick example: class A implements Serializable { public B b; } class B implements Serializable { public A a; } A a = new A(); B b = new B(); a.b = b; b.a = a; So what happens if we serialize a and b objects into a file and deserialize from that file? I thought we get 4 objects, 2 of each. Identical objects but different instances. But I'm not sure if there's anything else or is it right or wrong. If any technology needed to answer, please think based on Java. Thank you.

  Just wanted to do a quick plug for my first production asp.net mvc app. It's not too complex at the moment, but its going to grow into something potentially large, so I am now working on a new version to handle multiple cities. • Full automatic application trace for .net v4

  I would like to implement a way to trace every line of code in an application that is written for .net v4.0. An example would be. If I had the following function. private bool hasValue(string value) { if(string.isnullorempty(value) { return false; } else { return true; }} Then when the function is called I want detailed trace logs to contain something like this: Function called |Line 10 |Signature private bool hasValue(string value)|ValuesPassed hasValue("") Line Evaluated | Line 11 | if(string.isnullorempty(value) |ValuesPassed if(string.isnullorempty("") - evaluation returned true entered line 13 |signature return false|return action taken. This tracing can be done manually, but its a lot of work, and would dirty the code. Isn't there a way to get this level of tracing automatically with .net or 3rd party plugin? Thank you

• Monitor screen size and programming ease

  I recently heard that a big part in successful/quick debugging and easing the process of programming is to use a big screen. I may be purchasing a new computer in the future and this has me wondering: 1)Is the aforementioned statement actually true or is it a bit of a stretch? 2)Have you noticed that this plays a significant enough part to buy a bigger screen if the bigger screen is significantly more expensive? 3)Is it common for developers to work on 13'' laptop screen as their main (and only) workstation (this is what I currently develop on) or is this actually disadvantageous? This may be subjective but any professional opinions/experiences would be greatly appreciated!

• How should I make up for the lack of static initializers in PHP?

  I'm thinking about putting every class into a separate file and doing the static initialization outside of the class definition. The problem with this is the fact that the initialization will happen before the said class is actually needed (it will happen when the file which contains the class is included for the first time). It's a problem, because it may happen that the class won't be used at all, hence the initialization is unnecessary. And I think the practice of including the used files not in the beginning of your code is simply a dirty technique. If anybody has a viable solution to this problem, I would greatly appreciate it.

• Ubuntu 12.10 doesn't boot (installed with wubi)

  Quick and simple, my ubuntu doesn't want to load after installing with ubuntu. Starting the computer, at the screen to choose your operative system, first shows an error that windows failed to start, and later asks me to choose between ubuntu and windows. If I choose ubuntu, the same error happens again and I return to the same screen. If I choose windows, windows just starts normally as it was doing before I installed it. How can I solve this?? Thank you for your attention... I really need some help :)

  First off, the title is very generic because there are just tons of ways of how to possibly solve this. However, I'm looking for a clean and neat way. Situation: I have two equal object files foo.o and foo-pi.o, the latter of which is position-independent (compiled with -fPIC). Both depend on foo.h and bar.h. Problem: How do I, without code duplication, declare dependency of all foo*.o to bar.h? Solutions so far: $(shell bash -c 'echo -ne foo{-pi,}.o'}: bar.h $(addsuffix .o, $(addprefix fo, o-pi o)): bar.h The first solution is not portable on systems that don't support bash, the second is a dirty solution since I could not figure out how to use empty strings in addprefix.

Could not determine the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. I did find some useful informations that aren't available in a quick, light mobile format and I added to my site: teathers' programming, pharmacy shops open at night, twitter account embedding... have you got any other suggestion? I was thinking about facebook oauth to add some "social" feel, but I woluld like to avoid cloning fb information/features, just add some other cool addictive thing. I 'm using php for dynamic contents.

  I am converting XML children into the element parameters and have a dirty regex script I used in Textmate. I know that dot (.) doesn't search for newlines, so this is how I got it to resolve. Search language="(.*)" (.*)<education>(.*)(\n)?(.*)?(\n)?(.*)?(\n)?(.*)?</education> (.*)<years>(.*)</years> (.*)<grade>(.*)</grade> Replace grade="$13" language="$1" years="$11"> <education>$3$4$5$6$7$8$9</education> I know there's a better way to do this. Please help me build my regex skills further.

• What are some ways you use VS2010 Toolbox to be more productive?

  I just saw a presenter who had pre-loaded a large number of code snippets into the Toolbox so that he could pull them into the presentation rather than trying to re-type code on the spot (or have it already integrated and trying to comment/uncomment/etc.) This seemed like an extremely effective use. It got me thinking, though, that perhaps the Toolbox is far more powerful than I've ever considered, but a couple quick google searches didn't yield what I was looking for. What are some other uses of the Toolbox that could help in productivity which may or may not be obvious?

• Zend Framework: How to handle exceptions in Ajax requests?

  Normally when an exception is thrown, Error controller takes command and displays error page with regular common header and footer. This behavior is not wanted in Ajax request. Because in case of error, whole html page is sent over. And in cases where I'm directly loading the content of http response in a div, this is even more unwanted. Instead in case of Ajax request, I just want to receive 'the actual error' thrown by exception. How can I do this? I think, one dirty way could be: set a var in ajax request and process accordingly. Not a good solution.

I think I can do that if I call operator++ several times, but isn't that a little bit dirty? • Suddenly Spotify doesn't work anymore

  I've been using Spotify for 18 months without a problem. I use Ubuntu 12.04. Today Spotify stopped and doesn't start anymore. I only see a quick flash of the Spotify-startup-screen and thats it. I uninstalled using Synaptic and reinstalled using Synaptic. No solution. I uninstalled using Synaptic and reinstalled by terminal. No solution. I used Backup to set the system back two days. No solution. I see no error message and I ran out of options I know of.

• Why are so many questions closed? [migrated]

  I just joined this stackexchange, and I'm sure this question will get closed like so many others as being subjective or "not constructive". I did a quick count on the first few pages, and it looks like at least 10% of questions are closed. One page I saw had 22 out of 50 questions closed. What does closing so many questions solve? Apparently it does not reduce the number of "bad questions". Instead it just prevents people who would otherwise be interested in answering from doing so. Why can't the people who dislike all these questions just.. not answer?
