• FFmpeg overlay two videos, one input with transparency

  I am trying to create a karaoke from a CD+G file (converted to AVI using FFmpeg) and add a video as a background of the lyrics. Here's a screenshot of a the output from CD+G conversion, for simplicity let's call this lyrics.avi http://imgur.com/wUwHUhV Now a have this video.mp4 file that I'd like to put behind this lyrics.avi Here's a sample of what I'm trying to achieve http://imgur.com/8GuWXtQ I'm sure most of you are familiar with karaoke. I haven't used FFmpeg much and I'm not really sure if what I want to achieve is possible with FFmpeg. Is it possible to overlay two videos, and add a transparency to one of the videos? In this case the colour black? How can I set the offset time of the lyrics.avi? • How does VirtualBox's memory usage work?

  I've been running several VM's with VirtualBox, and the memory usage reported from various perspectives, and I'm having trouble figuring how much memory my VMs actually use. Here is an example: I have a VM running Windows 7 (as the Guest OS) on my windows XP Host machine. The Host Machine Has 3 GB of RAM The Guest VM is setup to have a base memory of 1 GB If I run Task Manger on the Guest OS, I see memory usage of 430 MB If I run Task Manger on the host OS, I see 3 processes that seem to belong to VirtualBox: VirtualBox.exe (1), using 60 MB of memory (This one seems to have the most CPU usage) VirtualBox.exe (2), using 20 MB of memory VBoxSvc.exe, using 11.5 MB of memory While running the VM, the Host OS's memory usage is about 2 GB When I shut down the VM, the Host OS's it goes back to memory usage goes down to about 900 MB So clearly, there are some huge differences here. I really don't understand how the GuestOS can use 400+ MB, while the Host OS only shows about 75 MB allocated to the VM. Are there other processes used by VirtualBox that aren't as obviously named? Also, I'd like to know if I run a machine with 1 GB, is that going to take 1 GB away from my host OS, or only the amount of memory the Guest machine is currently using? update Somene expressed distrust over my memory usage numbers, and I'm not sure if that distrust was directed at me, or my Host OS's Task Manager's reporting (which is perhaps the culprit), but for any skeptics, here is a screenshot of those processes on the host machine:

• Remote connection to a Windows 2008 Server Web edition

  Hello I have just installed Windows 2008 web server to have a development/test site on my office. In the test network I only have 2 machines: Windows server 2008 Web Edition Vista x64 client machine with Visual Studio The client and the server are networked using a NETGEAR router. I have enabled Remote desktop on the server and when I try to connect to it within the Vista client I get the credential window as in the following screenshot. But even if I write the correct credentials I am not able to remote login on the server. Where am I doing wrong? Update 1 I have even tried to create a folder share on the server. But I am not able to access it for the same reason. User or password invalid it says. But this is impossible as I am logging in the server with the same credentials. Update 2 If I try to browse the network from the RDP client I receive a message saying that there are no server running Terminal Services in my network.... :O

• Computer sponteously reboots when doing heavy file copy to/from disk

  I've been fighting with this problem for the last 3 weeks where my machine will just instantly reboot. No BSOD, and when i checked the event log all that was reported was the generic "Kernal-power" error with the detailed information pointing to a hard crash. This is a machine that was working for 18 months before these crashes started happening. When they started happening is after I added 3 HDs in a RAID-5, upped the memory to 12gb, moved to a new house, added a SSD and added about 5 case fans. I have thus eliminated the RAID, and determined that the SSD was not the cause (because it was still crashing even though the ssd wasn't connected). I've run memtest several times over night with no memory problems showing up. I've run IntelBurnTest to max out the cpu to see if it was a heat issue and at full tilt after 20 min it was only at 85C and the machine didn't crash. I also took a look at the voltages during this test, with a screenshot at the bottom of this post I've ruled out a software issue by reinstalling windows 7 ultimate x64 a total of 5 times, but even during that the install it crashes. Happens sometime during file copying at the beginning, or during uncompressing files, or sometimes during running windows update. The only discernible pattern i can see is that it seems to crash when hard disks might be spinning up or when they are accessed heavily from large file transfers. My current guess is that it is probably an issue with the MB, PSU or the power coming through the outlet. Any suggestions of what i could try to troubleshoot or what may be wrong? Specs PSU: Seasonic M12 700w Mem: 12gb CPU: i7-920 with stock heatsink MB: Asus P6T HDs: 3 green WD and 1 Corsair force 3 120b with 1.3.3 firmware Running full tilt voltages Idling Voltages

• How to set up multiple SSIDs with bandwidth limiting on a single wireless router?

  I have an Asus WL-520GU wireless router connected to a cable modem that I use for wireless internet access in my apartment. I would like to set it up so that it provides two SSIDs: one secured and password-protected for my regular use, and a "guest" SSID that's unsecured but throttled to, say, 10% of the available bandwidth. What is the most straightforward way to do this? I've been looking into DD-WRT and Tomato, both of which support my router. DD-WRT supports setting up multiple SSIDs using the GUI, but I don't know if it's possible to limit the bandwidth of each SSID independently; point #12 in this FAQ thread says it's not possible to limit by day or by MAC address, which is discouraging but not conclusive. Tomato allows bandwidth limits in its QoS settings, going by the screenshot here, but multiple SSID support is still experimental and it doesn't look like it will work with the encryption settings or bandwidth limits in the GUI. I'd like to know a good way to do this which gives me the fewest opportunities for screwing up. I'm no stranger to the command line, if that turns out to be what's necessary, but if so, please explain what the commands are doing because I don't have a good mental model of what needs to happen to set this up.

• A lots of Apache processes are using my CPU uses always more than 70%

  I am running a plesk panel in 1and1. I have 120 sites running and all are using pligg cms, each site has 600 visitors per day. Please see the details of my server below: HDD-1000GB RAM-16GB Processor-6 Core I always see a lot of apache processes running in my # top view, so the server seems overloaded. If I can reduce the amount apache processes I think the server will be ok. But I don't know why too many apache processes are running. I have also added maxclients and serverlimit 416 in the config /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf But no solution yet. I am researching around more than 7 days but don't get any solution. Please help me to solve the problem. In peak hours my sites are taking too much time to load, but off-peak hour it is ok. Please help me to find out the actual problem.

• Connection to Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask, etc. compromised via all devices on my home network - How?

  I'm a very computer savvy guy (although not very networking savvy), and I may still be wrong about this, but I think my home network may be compromised somehow. I'd like to know if it's possible for someone to have hijacked my network's connection to Google.com and other popular websites. Update: The issue seems to take effect with all popular websites. I can connect to small (non-popular) websites without issue, but Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and Bing cannot be accessed by any device on my home network. On all devices using my home network, I'm being shown http://www.google.com WARNING! Internet Explorer is currently out of date. Please update to continue. when I attempt to connect to google.com. I wouldn't be surprised by this at all if it were just the laptop. It's the fact that this is happening on all devices on my network that confuses me. Here's the screenshot from my iPhone, for reference. Can my home network be compromised? Is that even possible? How can something like this happen across all platforms on all devices in the same way? I wouldn't imagine every device / platform on the network would get the same virus. Should I assume that my network's security is totally compromised? Update: All mobile devices and laptops on my home network are experiencing the same alert when attempting to connect to google.com.

• Windows is very slow with my new SSD

  I have a laptop HP probook 4520s with Core i5 M480 @ 2.67Ghz, 4Gb RAM, 640 GB HDD Radeon HD 6370m 1GB video card. It would seem like a good stack for work, right? But My HDD has crashed after everyday walking with laptop about 1 year. After buying my new SSD (Patriot memory - Torqx II 128 Gb SATA II) and installing new Windows 8 from scratch - it was amazing fast. But I had only install windows updates, and I feel that the speed become the same as my old HDD, after install other software for my work, it becomes so slow, so when I use my PC with old lower configuration and it really works better than my awesome laptop... I checked that TRIM and AHCI mode are turned on. So why's that? I asked for help in Patriot Memory support, they suggested to send them ATTO test results, done, sent. Here is the response: "Thank you very much for the attached results. Looking at the results, I can see that your SSD speed is a lot lower than it should be. Can you tell me your system specs?" Until they checked my email, I re-installed Windows 8 to Windows 7 and it was again perfect, but the story repeats it becomes slower and slower after every installing new software. Check out some screenshots.. (sorry for the screenshot with russian TaskManager, I hope you will recognize those parameters accordingly with your english or other lang TaskManager) So the main issue that something everytime loads the disc on 100% and the response time is jumping around 1000-3000 ms. Why am I asking about Windows? Because I tried to install Linux Mint (x86) and It just flies. So great performance independent on how many programs I have installed. Only Windows (any 7 or 8) has this problem. So guys, I appreciate any ideas about how to fix that and may be answers of main question - "why is it so.?" Thanks!

• How to stop Firefox on an SSD from freezing when using the search box or submitting a form?

  Firefox usually freezes for about a second whenever I search for something from the toolbar search box, when submitting a form, or when clearing the search box history. I suspect it has something to do with the auto-complete feature. Using Windows 7's Resource Monitor, the problem seems to be from the file: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\formhistory.sqlite-journal I believe this is a temporary file which caches database writes. The following screenshot shows the very high response times from six different searches, and that the queue length on drive C shoots off the scale: My Firefox profile is on an Intel X25-M G2 SSD. The problem doesn't seem to occur if I create a new profile on a hard disk drive. However, I'd like to know why the problem exists on the SSD in the first place (because it's an annoying problem which contradicts the reason I bought an SSD, and it might happen with other applications too), and how to prevent it. It still occurs if Firefox is started in safe mode, and with the recent beta versions. Updates: VACUUMing the Firefox profile databases does not help with this problem. The SSD Optimizer in the Intel SSD Toolbox does not help either.

• Erratic WiFi 2.4 GHz channel spikes, what gives?

  Sorry guys, first a gripe about my neighbor's WiFi access point (it is related): they totally hog the center nine 2.4 GHz channels (3-11), centered right at 7! I know the outer regions of the signal don't make as much of a difference, and technically they're running channels 5 & 9. Anyway, their signal is clearly interfering with mine, which is necessarily centered at 3 or 11 to evade their interference. I guess it's somewhat a case of access point envy: they happen to have both a stronger signal and a higher data rate, while occupying twice the band width that I do. Getting to the point, I've noticed that they tend to sit nice and pretty centered at 7, but they definitely auto-select their channel, and I've noticed that the auto-selection algorithm tends to shift towards the higher channels; hence I decided to pick channel 3, and I don't get so many intermittent lag spikes any more. Anyway, the thing that weirded me out was the reason they have to auto-select sometimes: unexplained, powerful (talking order of 0dB here), giant spikes of 2.4 GHz activity in consistent regions of the spectrum. I don't think it's just noise, since my wireless monitoring software is registering a MAC address, a manufacturer, and usually a fairly coherent ascii name... and it seems to be a fairly well-confined signal. But these signals are fairly common, and they do some weird stuff to my signal. So my question is what are these signals? Where are they coming from? Where are they going? Why are they so ridiculously strong? Why don't they ever last very long? Here's an inSSIDer screenshot I took, for your perusal. I am labeled with "me", my greedy neighbor labeled with "neighbor", and the 2 quasar signals are labeled with "WTF?".

• USB Virus, "Program too big to fit in memory"?

  I got an installer for a piece of software via usb from a friend.Now what was weird was that although my friend and I had the same OS, same brand of laptop and I had a newer version (though I don't think this quite matters), the installer was running properly for him but not for me. It just showed a command line window and exited. I ran it via a batch file in which I included "pause" after running it. Here's the screenshot: Later my friend called me and told me that it was the USB that was the problem. It had some kind of virus on it and it corrupted every executable or folder on it , and it renamed all the sub_files inside folders to some weird jargon. He had tried using another USB and the installer worked fine. Now the friend has (unfortunately) gone back to his city and I can't get the installer again from him. My question is: Is there any way to repair the installer executable and run it? and Do you think the virus has infected my PC? (I have run a system scan with my antivirus and it showed nothing but still I'm worried)

• Is there a keyboard shortcut to open a mounted TrueCrypt container?

  Problem I would like to open a mounted TrueCrypt container with a keyboard shortcut. Currently, I'm opening it by double-clicking the volume. See screenshot above. Instead of using the mouse, I'd like to use the keyboard. But there seems to be no way. Versions TrueCrypt 7.1.a Windows 7 64bit Failed attempts When you right-click on the volume, there is a "Open" command in the context menu. So, I've tried to open the context menu with the context menu key on the Windows keyboard. But strangely enough that does not open the context menu. I've also tried Shift+F10 to open the context menu, but that does not work either. There is no "Open" command in the menues (Volume, System, Favorites, Tools, Settings, Help), so I can't press for instance Alt+V to open a menu and go from there. I tried to use AutoHotKey to send a double-click command, but that does not work because the double-click is sent to the current mouse position and not the current selection, which would my selected TrueCrypt volume. There would be a HotKeys dialog in menu Settings Hot Keys... But there seems to be no way, to add or configure a hotkey for "Open". Workaround My current workaround is to tick "Open Explorer window for successfully mounted volume" in the menu Settings Preferences...

• After upgrading to 2008 R2 Enterprise and installing more RAM, Windows can only see 4.00 GB

  (I have also posted this on technet but I'm running out of ideas) I've upgraded from Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard to Enterprise in order to make use of more RAM. The server previously had 32GB of RAM. The upgrade from Standard to Enterprise, using DISM, seemed to go OK, so I powered down and installed the RAM. This a Dell Poweredge T710, I was taking it from 32GB to 72GB. The BIOS recognised the RAM, although I needed to change from "Advanced ECC" to "Optimizer" mode for it to use all of it. After rebooting, windows can see the RAM but in the system panel will display: Installed memory (RAM): 72.0 GB (4.00 GB usable) In the resource monitor, the remainder of the RAM is showing as reserved for hardware. I've tried various RAM configurations, including reverting it to the same chips and same configuration as before the upgrade, but always just 4.00 GB is showing up as usable. Following some threads on these forums I've gone into msconfig and set the maximum memory "by hand" but that doesn't fix the problem. BIOS doesn't seem to have anything that looks like memory remapping which is another suggestion that has come up. How do I make this RAM available to Windows? It was available before the upgrade, because I could use the full 32GB RAM the server had to start with. • Nginx + PHP-FPM Too Many Resources

  My Server has the following Specs CPU: 6 Cores Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 v2 @ 2.60GHz RAM: 32 GB I have a problem with nginx+php-fpm. They are taking too many resources for an unknown reason. Even if i restart the nginx + php-fpm the start up processes will use many resources. I guess this isnt the problem because as i said earlier when i restart nginx+php-fpm at the same time, they are taking too much resources without any request. • Unable to connect to Windows VPN from iPad

  I have a 16 GB iPad wifi I can't get to connect to VPN. The error I get is: "A connection could not be established to the PP server. Try reconnecting. If the problem continues, verify your settings and contact your Administrator." I have tried a variety of tasks to troubleshoot the issue: I have verified that another iPad on another network can connect to the VPN I am trying to connect to I can connect to this VPN from the same network the iPad uses on a Windows machine I have verified an iPhone user can connect to this VPN from a different network I have reset the iPad's network settings I have reset the entire iPad and restored settings I have compared my settings w/ a screenshot from the iPad that works and confirmed everything is correct I have used the IP address and domain name of our VPN server in the settings I have tried deleting the VPN settings in the iPad and recreating them I have verified in the logs of VPN server that I'm not even getting to the VPN server (no log entry) I have verified that I cannot VPN from the iPad on separate network (different ISP and router) Are there any other ways to troubleshoot VPN on an iPad?

• What is causing ocassional white windows on my Mac?

  Hello. I'm having a very strange problem with my Mac lately. When I'm working in an app and a new window pane or sheet is displayed, sometimes it comes up completely white. Once an app is having these problems, it will continue to bring up a blank screen for that particular window (although other windows work fine). After the app is relaunched, the window is fine again. What I'm noticing that's very strange is that although the interface turns completely white, the functions of the interface are still available. So I have to "navigate blindly" around the interface, until I can relaunch. This occurs throughout the operating system. Screenshots: This is what happened when I tried opening the File menu in Lightroom app. What happened to me on Lynda.com (in Firefox) after selecting the "Software..." dropdown. (All other dropdowns were fine. Reloading the page fixed it.) When I was decompressing a file, The Unarchiver launched and opened this white window. It still decompressed the file. This is what happened one time when I opened Finder (with TotalFinder) to my Downloads folder. This is something I've never seen before. This just started happening lately. What could be the problem? • Photoshop CS4. How do I make sure my color stays the same in my different .psd files? (could be RGB

  I asked 2 photoshop experts I know but they haven't got a clue because all my settings are exactly the same, in both files. (except the RGB type !! I'm not sure. Please read on) I use RGB color, 72DPI, 8 bits / channel. No adjustments (filters, like greyscale, etc ...) are selected / used. The layers are both normal, and opacity and fill are 100% (yes, in both files). Now, I know the CMYK settings (see screenshots) are different, but when the settings are the same the color changes. Why is this happening and how do I solve this problem? My guess is I'm working with different a type of RGB. It's sRGB IE61966 - 2.1 in the file I created (file info raw data) but I can't find that in the file that started with a screenshot. If that's the problem, how do I change / convert the RGB, once the file is already open? Thank you.

• Ubuntu server crashes; need help figuring how to figure out why

  I have a 768 Slice at slicehost.com running Ubuntu Server 8.04.2 LTS (hardy) with a LAMP stack on it that periodically crashes, though why I am not sure. From what I can tell, there is a process that basically goes rogue and consumes all the memory on the slice, suffocating all the other programs running until the whole thing comes to a grinding halt, and I have to do a hard reboot of the slice to get it back up and running again. I can't detect any pattern for this (it seems to happen about once a month, more or less). Here's a screenshot of my console during the last crash: I would assume that a possible cause might a PHP script or an apache configuration rule that might cause the crash if triggered? How would I be able to find out which one is the offending one? I've checked and rechecked all my PHP scripts, and running them doesn't seem to trigger the crash. I've also been able to log on to my system during a crash and see what's running (with top), but I can't tell how the offending process was started, so I can't trace the root of the problem! I know my description is overly generic, but unfortunately my expertise in tracking down the source of these glitches is very limited. My only other lead as to the culprit here is Wordpress, which we have installed on this server. • Firefox takes a really long time to load some sites on Ubuntu

  Hello guys, I have an issue here. Some sites - just a few - takes a really long time to load on Firefox. One example is A List Apart (http://www.alistapart.com/) which takes more than 30 minutes (yes, minutes, not seconds). On Opera, ou even through a telnet session, the problematic sites run without problem, fast as expected. I am using Linux 8.04, running Firefox 3.6.3 downloaded from mozilla site, with a 10M ADSL connection. I tried many tweaks I found googling, like disable IPv6, and change http pipelining settings on FF's about:config. None worked. I also used Firebug to find what phase during negotiation is the bottleneck. Findings are in the screenshot. Well guys, any idea what is the issue? And how to solve it? I repeat, this only happens with firefox (3.6.3 and prior versions), for a few sites only (even sites with much more requests, images, javascripts, stylesheets work fine), and http pipelines and IPv6 tweaks on about:config didn't work. • Failure to connect to admin share pops up dialog

  I'm having an issue with a curious error message when accessing the administrative share on a remote machine. Specifically, the client is logged in as the domain administrator on the machine A, and runs some code that tries to access the admin share on B (a domain member). The access is done in .NET, along these lines (though I am not sure if the method of access makes a difference): string path = @"\\B\admin$"; if (Directory.Exists(path)) { try { path += @"\temp\"; if (!Directory.Exists(path)) { Directory.CreateDirectory(path); } path += "myfile_remote"; File.Copy("myfile", path); Now, on some machines this fails. That is not a big problem as we have a fallback. I'd like to know why but it is not the real issue. The problem is that running this piece of code causes a dialog box to pop up for the logged-in user on B, saying "network error trying to access \\B\admin$\temp\myfile_remote. Contact the network administrator and ask for the correct permissions". Unfortunately, it is a foreign language Windows so I'll spare you all posting a screenshot. It is skinned like a standard Windows dialog box. Why exactly is that dialog box popping up for the user and is there anything I can do about it? Edit to add: B is a Windows 7 Enterprise installation. The client is not aware of any GPO policies being installed. There is AV from Trend Micro installed.

• iTunes Title Bar is Equal to the Location of the Library file?

  I have never been able to get a clear answer on why the latest edition of iTunes does this. I have my entire iTunes library located in C:\itunes\ and the library data files inside C:\itunes\!library_info for backup purposes. However when version 9 of iTunes came out it went from having iTunes as the title, to !library_info. Anyway to get around this without moving my data files away? Annoying "feature" if that is what it is. Again Apple support and forums were of no help to me. Anyone have insight on this? • Why is my hg workbench & Adobe Reader toolbar icon a blank white page?

  On my work's PC (windows 7 32bit) all Adobe Reader and hg Workbench icons on the toolbar (and general shortcuts for hg workbench) are just white pages (with the top left corner folded over). If you right click on the toolbar icon then right click on "TortoiseHg Workbench"(for hg workbench) then "Properties" then the "Change Icon..." button is greyed out (same for "Adobe Reader X"). Also the "Target:" is "TortoiseHg 2.4.0 (x86)" and is greyed out also the "Open File Location" is greyed out. This is the same for both Hg Workbench and Adobe Reader and seems to be the only thing that connects them. I have tried reinstalling to no avail. I also have local admin rights on the PC. I finally I have tried the following following questions without any luck (they aren't quite relevant to my issue but close): Adobe Reader program icon and pdf icons don't appear in Windows 7 Adobe PDF icon disappeared? Encase my description isn't enough to understand the issue here is a screenshot. As you can see the Hg Workbench icon (far left) and a pdf open in Adobe Reader X (second icon to from the left) are both blank and the shortcut is mainly greyed out.

• Flickering dual screens in Virtual Box Ubuntu 13.10 Guest

  I have Ubuntu 13.10 x64 installed as a guest in VirtualBox (under a Windows 8.1 host) and have the settings for the virtual machine setup to run with a monitor count of 2, 128MB video memory and 3D acceleration enabled. In my guest I have the virtual box additions installed (which allowed me to have two 1920x1080 screens). Here's a screenshot of my VM settings. My laptop is an Asus N550JV which has both Intel's HD Graphics 4600 GPU and Nvidia's GeForce GT 750M. By default though I believe the Intel GFX card is being used to render the VM. When I boot up the VM it loads perfectly on dual screens, however whenever I move the mouse from one screen to the other (I have a Dell S2340L running over a HDMI connection as a second screen) the screen flickers. I've tried a variety of settings changes in both Ubuntu and the VM settings, but cannot seem to stop this screen flicker. I also used the NVidia control panel in Windows to force the dedicated graphics card to always be used but found that the display driver sometimes crashed whilst working in the VM, resulting in my VM session being destroyed, so I figured it's better to stick with the Intel GFX as that appears to be more stable. I also tried without 3D acceleration but that was much worse, and if I ran the VM with a low amount of graphics memory it really struggled. I read some posts suggesting changes to /etc/X11/xorg.conf but I don't appear to have an xorg.conf file. There were also a few posts (though related to Synergy) suggesting running xset -dpms but this command doesn't appear to have had any effect for me. As an additional note, I'm finding that window drawing in the guest is a little laggy/glitchy. For example, quickly scrolling through a web page may result in parts of the viewport displaying original content. Certainly I notice drawing issues most in the web browser, but it also impacts other software with parts of the window not being drawn when, say, switching between accounts in thunderbird. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

I've tried mounting it in different locations with different permissions, users and groups but I have not made any progress Due to my low reputation on serverfault ( mostly stackoverflow user ) I'm unable to post a screenshot that shows that the directories are shown as files. If I type the full path in explorer, the directory listing works excellently, except for any subdirectories that are then shown as files. Any attack vector for this issue would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if I have provided insufficient details. Edit: The same share when accessed from a OS X, works perfectly listing the directories as directories. Best Regards!
