• Menu command stuck on screen

  For some reason, periodically when I select a menu command, the command label gets "stuck" on the screen and won't go away. I can close all open applications, including whichever one I was using when it got stuck, but it still won't go away. In the screenshot below, I opened an new instance of IE just to show how the label stays on top. The label was not created by this instance of IE. Edit with the source: The label that gets stuck is the first menu command I select in IE. If a label is already stuck, a new one does not get stuck (regardless of which instance(s) of IE are involved). Based on this knowledge, I now just open IE on my secondary monitor, carefully open the context menu so the Properties command is in the bottom corner, and click it. This is not a solution... The label never moves and is transparent to mouse input (if I click it, it's as if I clicked the item behind it). The label does not go away if I close all running applications. I haven't tried stopping services or closing system tray items like Live Mesh. The label does go away if I change the screen resolution and then change it back. Any ideas how I can stop this from happening? It's happened a half dozen times since yesterday and it's becoming quite disrupting to my work. Obviously I added the circle in MS Paint. That part isn't stuck. ;)

• Netgear CG3000D new Modem/Router - Random High Ping

  Cox just recently came out and looked at my internet and decided that the modem I had was causing high latency issue. The speed was fine but the ping would spike to around 100 and over when gaming or putting a load more than browsing on the line. After they replaced it, it seems like I get better latency, but when it spikes, I get upwards of over 300 ping with like 500 jitter. I figured I would hit the serverfault universe before sending another email to Cox. I opted not to do the Cox setup as it was an extra $20 which I thought would have just setup the wireless (which I can handle). Is it a setting or something that I missed that needs to be setup? The firmware for the CG3000D is awful and not fun to use. I did change some hidden settings on the RgServices.asp page (I'll attach a screenshot). I've also heard that the Router/Modem combos are awful and that I should go back and just ask for a modem stand-alone. Any input is helpful. All screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/JX6qu#0

• sys.dm_exec_query_stats interaction with recompilation

  We use sys.dm_exec_query_stats to track down slow queries and queries that are IO offenders. This works great, we get a lot of very insightful stats. It is clear this is not as accurate as running a profiler trace, as you have no idea when SQL Server will decide to chuck out a an execution plan. We have quite a few queries where the wrong execution plan is cached. For example queries like the following: SELECT TOP 30 a.Id FROM Posts a JOIN Posts q ON q.Id = a.ParentId JOIN PostTags pt ON q.Id = pt.PostId WHERE a.PostTypeId = 2 AND a.DeletionDate IS NULL AND a.CommunityOwnedDate IS NULL AND a.CreationDate @date AND LEN(a.Body) 300 AND pt.Tag = @tag AND a.Score 0 ORDER BY a.Score DESC The problem is that the ideal plan really depends on the date selected (screenshot of ideal plan): However if the wrong plan is cached, it totally chokes when the date range is big: (notice the big fat lines) To overcome this we were recommended to use either OPTION (OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN) or OPTION (RECOMPILE) OPTIMIZE FOR UNKNOWN results in a slightly better plan, which is far from optimal. Executions are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. RECOMPILE results in the best plan being chosen, however no execution counts and stats are tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats. Is there another DMV we could use to track stats on queries with OPTION (RECOMPILE)? Is this behavior by-design? Is there another way we can for recompilation while keeping stats tracked in sys.dm_exec_query_stats? Note: the framework will always execute parameterized queries using sp_executesql

• How do I repartition an SDHC card in Windows?

  How do I repartition an SDHC card (4 GB or more)? Do I need third-part tools or Linux (a live CD solution would be OK)? In Windows' Disk Management the option Delete Partition is dimmed out: I can reformat the card as FAT32, copy files to and from the card and even change the file system to NTFS using the command line command CONVERT, but not repartition it. The article How to Partition an SD Card in Windows XP talks about using "a Windows enabler program" which sound rather dubious to me. I have tried to change from “Optimize for quick removal” to “Optimize for performance”. The option to format as NTFS appeared, but the Delete Partition option is still dimmed out. Platform: Windows XP 64-bit SD card reader: USB 2.0 device, LogiLink® CR0005C Cardreader 3,5' USB 2.0 intern 54-in-1 mit USB Front Kingston 16 GB SDHC card, speed class 4. (It could be formatted as FAT32 and successfully used in a 4 GB ReadyBoost setup (Windows 7).) • How do you set max execution time of PHP's CLI component?

  How do you set max execution time of PHP's CLI component? I have a CLI script that has gone into a infinite loop and I'm not sure how to kill it without restarting. I used quicksilver to launch it, so I can't press control+c at the command line. I tried running ps -A (show all processes) but php is not showing up in that list, so perhaps it has timed out on it's own - but how do you manually set the time limit? I tried to find information about where I should set the max_execution_time setting, I'm used to setting this for the version of PHP that runs with apache, but I have no idea where to set it for the version of PHP that lives in /usr/bin. I did see the follow quote, which does seem to be accurate (see screenshot below), but having an unlimited execution time doesn't seem like a good idea. Keep in mind that for CLI SAPI max_execution_time is hardcoded to 0. So it seems to be changed by ini_set or set_time_limit but it isn't, actually. The only references I've found to this strange decision are deep in bugtracker (http://bugs.php.net/37306) and in php.ini (comments for 'max_execution_time' directive). (via http://php.net/manual/en/function.set-time-limit.php) ini_set('max_execution_time') has no effect. I also tried the same thing and go the same result with set_time_limit(7).

• How to repair a corrupted Excel file

  I'm trying to restore some files for a friend who messed up a USB stick by pulling it out of the computer too soon. By searching invisible partitions I was able to restore the files. All files are intact, except 1 excel file that seems to be corrupted. I've googled about ways to repair an Excel file, because the default repair options in Excel 2003-2010 do not work for this file. I've came across a numerous third-party apps, of which the one seemes to be able to do the job: Recovery Toolbox for Excel. Of-course, this and all other apps I found require a purchase to actually repair the file. It seems a bit silly to pay 30 dollars for a one time thing, and something that is not for myself. So, I would like to keep that as a last-resort option. Is there anything I can try to fix this? I've attached a screenshot of how the file looks when I open it on my OSX when converted to a HTML file (to view the code), for the option that it could be a character set problem.

• NTFS 'Owner' missing when accessing hard disk from external USB adapter

  I have a hard drive with Windows XP SP3 installed on it. When the drive is connected through the standard SATA connector inside the laptop, everything works as expected. However when I remove the drive from the laptop and connect the drive to the external USB adapter, almost all files / folders lose the 'Owner' field contents. I was wondering why could that be. I've tried two USB adapters and this happens on each. I could take the ownership of all of the files, but this would overwrite the Owner value (the Owner value that is present when the drive is accessed through standard SATA connector in the laptop). //edit: if the hard drive is used through the USB adapter, I can't access most of the files, at least until I take ownership of the files (/folders). This is how it looks like: HDD inside USB adapter: HDD inside laptop: (note the Owner column) //edit: some of the files on the first screenshot have Owner field filled up. That's because I took the ownership of those files / folders to be able to access the files on the hard drive. //edit2: also, if the hard drive is connected through USB adapter and if I've took the ownership of some files by the 'ddd' user, then if i login as a different user (lets say 'eee' user), the owner field is _still_ empty: ddd user: eee user: eee user can't access the 'ddd' folder. Both users have Administrator priviledges.

• Many different BSOD

  I'm experiencing multiple bluescreens for a couple of months now. Their error code is as diverse as their time of occurence... Sometimes it happens during gaming, sometimes when watching videos, sometimes when the computer is idle. These are the bluescreens I see most often: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION INTERRUPT_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL DRIVER_OVERRAN_STACK_BUFFER Responsible drivers (according to the memory dumps): hal.dll tcpip.sys dxgmms1.sys ndis.sys mouhid.sys atikmdag.sys dump_atapi.sys and of course: ntoskrnl.exe My first thought was a driver incompatibility because I am using Windows 8 and some of the bluescreens seem to come from driver issues. All drivers are up to date. I'm afraid that my memory is broken or the mainboard or both. I used the windows integrated memtest which didn't find any errors. Memtest86 found some errors. Does it make sense to buy new memory? Couldn't it be a problem of the board as well? I also read that my memory could run at a too low voltage. But it's set to 1.5V as recommended. Another guess would be to set the memory's latencies manually, but how do I know which ones to try? Here is a screenshot of bluescreenview showing the latest bluescreens. Maybe someone has faced the same behavior before and found a solution. Any ideas or suggestions? Current setup on which the bluescreens occur. • Is it bad to redirect http to https?

  I just installed an SSL Certificate on my server. I use a web hosting panel called ZPanel that is an open source project. It then set up a redirect for all traffic on my domain on Port 80 to redirect it to Port 443. In other words, all my http://example.com traffic is now redirected to the appropriate https://example.com version of the page. The redirect is done in my Apache Virtual Hosts file with something like this... RewriteEngine on ReWriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$ RewriteRule ^/(.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [NC,R,L] My question is, are there any drawbacks to using SSL? Since this is not a 301 Redirect, will I lose link juice/ranking in search engines by switching to https? I appreciate the help. I have always wanted to set up SSL on a server, just for the practice of doing it, and I finally decided to do it tonight. It seems to be working well so far, but I am not sure if it's a good idea to use this on every page. My site is not eCommerce and doesn't handle sensitive data; it's mainly for looks and the thrill of installing it for learning. UPDATED ISSUE Strangely Bing creates this screenshot from my site now that it is using HTTPS everywhere...

• Computer randomly shuts itself off

  I have not been able to determine a pattern for why this happens, despite my best efforts. I've attempted to run it on full power with Prime95 and this doesn't trigger a restart. Generally the restarts occur while I'm playing games, watching videos, or even just having multiple tabs open in a browser. However, I often play processor intense games for hours without any restarts occurring, and sometimes they'll happen 3-4 times in an hour during less intense activity, so I don't think that is the problem. I imagine it has something to do with overheating or power consumption so I've been monitoring CPU temperature and cleaning with compressed air, but the problem keeps happening. I don't know how to track power consumption, and assume that this is the problem. Whenever this occurs, the sound gets stuck in a short loop of whatever was playing at the time, though restarts also occur when nothing is playing. • How to turn off Windows Azure's "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message?

  Is there any setting/configuration item to avoid Windows Azure from printing that error on the screen or detecting it? I've put a screenshot below that shows the message when you RDP into the web role. My web role runs on Windows Azure Guest OS 1.17 (variant of Windows Server 2008 SP2) Background: I was explaining our architecture to some outside engineers (NDA'd and all) and had to demystify the webrole as they were unfamiliar with Azure. I RDP'd into the VMs running the Web Role when one of their engineers gasped "are you guys running pirated copies of Windows in the cloud?" I also noticed that within the RDP screen, the Azure machines had "This copy of Windows is not genuine" on the bottom left corner. Now obviously, Microsoft is running their own OS in their own datacenter with no influence from me. So no 'piracy' here, despite that obvious warning. However, they seemed so distracted by this ("how can it be? really? hmmm?") that we wasted more time talking about it than the actual matter at work. Like I said, they have little exposure to Azure but have value add elsewhere. I want to get rid of this so I don't have to explain this in the future. PS Microsoft: If you're going to modify Windows Server <XYZ> into Windows Azure <A.B> , you should also modify the code that verifies product integrity.

• Changing SkyDrive default location on Windows 8.1

  Update: This issue is due to the use of any non-local location for the SkyDrive folder. I've currently worked around this by using a local folder, but this has not resolved the original problem. I am trying to change the location where SkyDrive is located in Windows 8.1. This is the newly integrated SkyDrive, and not a downloadable client. There are a couple of similar questions on this site, but they pertain to Windows 8 and 8.1 Preview: Changing the SkyDrive default path in Windows 8.1 (Windows 8.1 Preview) How do I change the SkyDrive default folder in Windows (Windows 8) The SkyDrive folder is a system folder in 8.1, and like other system folders, has a Location tab in its properties that theoretically lets you change its location. I was able to do this with other system folders such as Downloads and Pictures, but there is an error when I try to change this for SkyDrive. Edit: The location that causes this error is a mapped network drive. The error does not occur when trying to move SkyDrive to another location on the same drive. There are no permission restrictions on the mapped network drive. • Why can't I browse my D: drive, even if I'm in the Administrators group?

  My fileserver running Windows Server 2008 has two logical drives; the C: drive contains all of the system and application data, and the D: drive contains all of the business data. There are several shares on the top level of the D: drive that are working fine. However... When logged into the fileserver interactively via Remote Desktop, only the Domain Administrator and local Administrator accounts can browse the D: drive. I set up an account called "Maintenance" and added it to the local Administrators group, but when logged in with this user, I can't browse into the D: drive. The D: drive has the following permissions ACL: Full Access - SYSTEM Full Access - MACHINE\Administrators It won't even let me view the ACL for the E: drive. So I tried taking ownership of the E: drive, then I can read the ACL, and "Effective Permissions" says that I have full access. But I still get this error message. Location is not available D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied. • How to quickly check if two columns in Excel are equivalent in value?

  I am interested in taking two columns and getting a quick answer on whether they are equivalent in value or not. Let me show you what I mean: So its trivial to make another column (EQUAL) that does a simple compare for each pair of cells in the two columns. It's also trivial to use conditional formatting on one of the two, checking its value against the other. The problem is both of these methods require scanning the third column or the color of one of the columns. Often I am doing this for columns that are very, very long, and visual verification would take too long and neither do I trust my eyes. I could use a pivot table to summarize the EQUAL column and see if any FALSE entries occur. I could also enable filtering and click on the filter on EQUAL and see what entries are shown. Again, all of these methods are time consuming for what seems to be such a simple computational task. What I'm interested in finding out is if there is a single cell formula that answers the question. I attempted one above in the screenshot, but clearly it doesn't do what I expected, since A10 does not equal B10. Anyone know of one that works or some other method that accomplishes this?

• Sharepoint: authenticating users via forms authentication

  My problem is the following(sharepoint Newbie) , i want to change the default zone from being a Windows Authenticated Zone to a Forms Authenticated Zone ,thereby forcing the site collection administrator to log in via forms authentication and not windows also the sharepoint users will be accesing the site internally my goal is to effectively replace windows authentication with forms authentication as my company does not have active directory installed. So far i have created an ASP Application that adds the users to the database,the database was created via the .Net Framework Asp tool(Asp reg_sql),however when i change the default zone to the AspNetSqlMembershipProvider(Forms) and attempt to add my site collection administrator via the Central admistrator, i get the following error "No Exact Match found" as shown on the screenshot. My inkling is that somehow the people picker is failing to read the users from the database but reasearch on correcting that thus far has proved fruitless. I have made all the relevant changes on the these sites(Central admin site,My test site & Add Users site) config files.Changes are the following(Membeship Provider,Connection String,People Picker) i left out the role provider for now as it is optional. Help on this would ge highly appreciated...

• RAID5 issue after replacing motherboard and upgrading firmware

  ok so ive had a 4x2TB(samsung HD204UI w/firmware patch) raid5 array working normally for about a month. It was in a h57 gigabyte motherboard using the intel raid with Windows 7 x64. Today I got an intel h67 motherboard, so I upgraded the intel raid drivers to 10.1.0.1008 from 9.6.0.1014, and I'm not sure if i checked after a reboot, but it caused no problems. I swapped in the new dh67 motherboard, and my array status was "failed". 2 of the 4 drives listed themselves as members, while the other two drives listed themselves as non-members. I tried going back to the old h57 mobo, and downgrading the raid drivers, but the issue remains. It's not port dependent, 2 of the drives always come up as non-members regardless of what port or motherboard they are plugged into. This screenshot should show that the SNs match, which raises the question why the software doesn't realize the drive is a member of the array. I'd like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar, and what should I do, can I force the drive to be recognized as a member (without wiping data)?

• Mysql server high trafic makes websites really slow or unable to load

  Lately we have been having a lot of problems with our mysql server, from websites being really slow or even unable to load them at all. The server is a dedicated server that only runs our mysql database. i have been running some test using a profiler (JetProfiler) and tool to stress test (loadUI). If I use loadUI to connect with 50 simultaneous connections to one of our websites that runs a resently big query it will already make the website be unable to load. One of the things that makes me worried is that when I look at Jetprofile it always shows a Treads_connected of 1.00 and it seems that when it hits around 2.00 that I'm unable to connect. The 3 big peaks are when I run a test with loadUI, first one was 15 simultaneous connections wich made it still able for me to load the website but just really slow, the second one was 40 simultaneous connections which already made it impossible to load and the third one was with 100 connection which also didn't make it load anymore. Another thing that worries me is that in JetProfiler it says all the queries that get used are full table scans, could this maybe be the problem? The website I run as a test runs 3 queries, one for a menu that outputs around 1000 rows, one for the adds that has around 560 rows and a big one to get posts that has around 7000 rows (see screenshot bellow) I also have monitored the cpu of the server and there seems to be no problem there, even when I make a lot of connections with loadui the cpu stays low. I can't seem to figure out what is the main cause of the websites being unable to load when there is a high amount of traffic, if anyone has other suggestions for testing or something that might cause the problem please let me know.

  NetApp support has suggested us aligning partitions to improve performance, in short: starting sector must be divisible by 8. How can I move the start point in a misaligned partition -in production, with ext3- under Linux? Using fdisk 'b' command in expert mode ('move beginning of data in a partition') works, but it doesn't move the file system.. thanks!!

• Made a .dmg for a project; user can't open it - "no mountable file systems"

  Hello, We don't know a great deal about Macs. We had to make an installer, and were told to try a .dmg So we put together version 1, and it seemed to work. We had one application file, which had our icon, and one folder. The user was instructed to drag these into the Applications folder, of which there was the Mac version of a shortcut in the dmg. Then we were told we needed to update files, and assured that we could do so via drag-and-drop. So we did; we dragged them into the folder in the dmg. We tested it (on the computer we were using to edit the dmg) and it seemed to work. So we burnt it onto a disk (along with a windows installer that actually works!). I've just gotten an email from the recipient. She's got a Mac laptop. She inserted the disk, doubleclicked on it, doubleclicked on the .dmg, and got a Warning: no mountable file systems. • Graphics artifacts/distortion with Win7 and nVidia

  Problem I encounter is rather hard to describe, so I provide a screenshot: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1732760/video-distortion.png As you can see there are some horizontal stripes in random colors. These stripes appear sometimes in all windowed apps, games and on the desktop too. They tend to stay in place until I refresh window (or force it to to redraw by for example minimizing and maximizing again). They also tend to appear in the same place and shape multiple times, even if they disappear, it's very likely they will be again in the same place after a while. These artifacts do not blink or change if computer is idling. If I don't touch anything, do not use mouse, they will stay in place forever (unless some app redraws its window on its own). I first encountered this problem some weeks ago. Back then I thought it might be cooling problem, so I took out the graphics card, removed dust from the radiator and fan and put it into PC back. I also ran some stress test using Furmark (peak tempearature was ~65C) to see if the problem becomes more intense if the card gets hotter, but suprisingly no artifacts whatsoever appear during the stress test. Graphic card is Galaxy GeForce 7300 GT with DDR3 memory, was never overclocked. Drivers are the latest, from Nvidia site. OS is Windows 7 64-bit, updated. AMD64 3000+, 2GB RAM. I'm running a dual monitor setup with 2 19'' Samsung LCDs and problem is on both, so I assume it's not a monitor or cable issue.

• Website latency and bad tcp packets

  I have multiple websites hosted on a Linode VPS and I'm having an issue with one of them: every page that I try to load has about 10 seconds latency. Apache logs are clean and the other websites on the same machine are running well. At a first glance I tought it was a memory problem since the VPS has got only 512M, but from the linode dashboard CPU and Disk I/O are normal. Anyway here we have the ram status: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 487 463 23 0 2 55 -/+ buffers/cache: 404 82 Swap: 255 155 100 Only 23M free, but if it was a memory problem why other websites are going as usual? I took a live capture with wireshark, and there are some duplicates SYN ACK packets just before the 10 seconds gap. I'm out of ideas, looking for some clues. Any suggestions? I'm out of ideas again.

• strange raid5 issue:

  ok so ive had a 4x2TB(samsung HD204UI w/firmware patch) raid5 array working normally for about a month. It was in a h57 gigabyte motherboard using the intel raid with windows 7 x64. Today I got an intel h67 motherboard, so I upgraded the intel raid drivers to 10.1.0.1008 from 9.6.0.1014, and I'm not sure if i checked after a reboot, but it caused no problems. I swapped in the new dh67 motherboard, and my array status was "failed". 2 of the 4 drives listed themselves as members, while the other two drives listed themselves as non-members. I tried going back to the old h57 mobo, and downgrading the raid drivers, but the issue remains. It's not port dependent, 2 of the drives always come up as non-members regardless of what port or motherboard they are plugged into. the screenshot should show that the SNs match, which begs the question why the software doesn't realize the drive is a member of the array: http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/6145/both.png I'd like to know if anyone has experienced anything similar, and what should i do, can i force the drive to be recognized as a member (without wiping data)?

• Ping results "echo'd" out to a text file on Windows XP machine has unusual character rather than the outcome

  Here is the situation. I have a Windows XP machine that I would like to ping another machine and send the output to a text file for review at a later date. This is quite a standard question with several answers on this website and others. The issue I have is that when reviewing the txt file afterwards, the outcome of the ping appears as a strange character. A screenshot of the text file output can be found at the following link. Please note its the first 8 ping outputs that have a strange character. The %%B was me hoping that would output what I wanted! (Cannot upload image to any hosting websites because the company I work for seems to be afraid of them ....) It appears that the echo command isn't outputting the right data, but I don't understand this enough to correct it. Can anyone spot where I'm going wrong?

• How to disable my laptop's defective keyboard?

  I have an Alienware M17x R2, and after a couple years of use I started having problems with the keyboard: Intermittently, and without warning or apparent cause (even if I'm not touching the computer), the S key (and more recently the D key) will start firing incessant signals until I hit the offending key. I've been using a USB keyboard, which is conveniently exactly the right size to fit over the built-in keyboard without touching any buttons. However, even as I type the defective keyboard will fire its stream of signals. I have contacted Dell about this, twice in fact. The first time, I was just bluntly told that they don't ship replacement keyboards. The second time I was told that they did, but they were out of stock and they would contact me when they were in stock again. They haven't contacted me since. I can't seem to work out which device to disable in the device manager. Here's a screenshot of what I have: None of the keyboard devices have "Disable" in their context menus, only "Uninstall"... so you'll understand if I'm hesitant to try anything myself. Any advice on how to fix this?

• Windows Broken after Deletion of HP_TOOLS partition

  When I decided to install Ubuntu on my laptop as a dual-boot, I recognized that Windows 7 was using four separate partitions. I (yes, this was stupid) thought the HP_TOOLS partition was probably one I could get rid of, so I deleted it and installed Ubuntu side-by-side Windows using the installation wizard, but now Windows won't progress past the loading screen without the computer automatically restarting. I've had to use Ubuntu exclusively since then. I'm not sure how I can recover it. All of my files seem to still be there--I can mount the other partition and see them, use them, etc--but Windows 7 won't boot. I really have no idea what to do or what to try, or even if I'm at a salvageable point. here's a screenshot of GParted: This makes me suspicious that it wasn't necessarily the removal of my HP_TOOLS partition but the "unknown" status of that 992.50 KiB partition there, sda1. I'm assuming that's the recovery one? How can I get Windows bootable again? I'm sorry, but I'm so unfamiliar with this sort of thing I'm not quite sure where to start.
