  • How can I consolidate deferred/delayed calls in Objective-C ?

    - by thrusty
    I'd like to ensure that certain maintenance tasks are executed "eventually". For example, after I detect that some resources might no longer be used in a cache, I might call: [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5]; However, there might be numerous places where I detect this, and I don't want to be calling cleanupCache continuously. I'd like to consolidate multiple calls to cleanupCache so that we only periodically get ONE call to cleanupCache. Here's what I've come up with do to this-- is this the best way? [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(cleanupCache) object:nil]; [self performSelector:@selector(cleanupCache) withObject:nil afterDelay:0.5];

  • NSDecimalNumber multiplication strangeness

    - by rein
    ExclusivePrice, quantity are both NSDecimalNumbers. NSDecimalNumber *price = [exclusivePrice decimalNumberByMultiplyingBy:quantity]; NSLog(@"%@ * %@ = %@", exclusivePrice, quantity, price); The result I get: 2010-04-05 00:22:29.111 TestApp[13269:207] 65 * 2 = -0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000007169919476068871316457914368 What I expected: 2010-04-05 00:22:29.111 TestApp[13269:207] 65 * 2 = 130 Can anyone explain this please?

  • Strategy to keep track of stored files in the documents directory?

    - by mystify
    In my app, the user can save his input to disk. This is done with NSKeyedArchiver. Currently I simply name my files with a timestamp. But of course, the user may want to load one of them back in to keep on editing them. What would be the most reliable / safe strategy to keep track of those files? I need to present the user a list of those files, so that he can choose one to open. Currently I think of making an archived NSMutableArray which simply stores the file names, but I feel that this strategy is not really good. We all know when we save files sometimes something goes wrong, and this seems very likely to get currupted easily, or not? How would you do it?

  • Rotating and Moving a UIImageView (CocoaTouch)

    - by yar
    This code works to rotate: CGAffineTransform transform = CGAffineTransformMakeRotation(radians(lastAngle++)); anImage.transform = transform; and this code works to move my UIImageView CGRect frame = [anImage frame]; frame.origin.x+=1; frame.origin.y+=1; [anImage setFrame:frame]; but when I combine them, the image stretches out increasingly on each run through. Perhaps the frame should not be modified like this?

  • UIScrollView eating touches from its parent

    - by Jon Hull
    I have nested scrollViews (or rather a subclass of UIScrollView inside of an actual scrollview). I set the size of the inner view to its contentSize and set scrollEnabled = NO, because I only want the outside view scrolling. But the innerView occasionally eats touches and keeps the outerView from scrolling when it should. Is there something else I need to set to keep it from stealing the scrolling touches, but still allowing user interaction (e.g. editing a textView)?

  • UITableView Reusable cells

    - by Michael
    Can someone explain me the way reusable cells works for single table view? How many reusable cells a datasource should create? So far in all samples I've seen only one. Would one even need more?

  • Persisting a single UISearchBar instance across 4 separate UITableViews

    - by Jacob Relkin
    Hi fellas, I'm in the midst of an iPhone app that needs to have 4 separate UITableView objects sharing access to one UISearchBar in the first section and first row of the aforementioned UITableView objects. I have tried to offset the UITableView's frame by 44 pixels, then adding the search bar as a subview of my UIViewController's view. That works, but I cannot use the table index to scroll up to the search bar, since it is not a cell in the tableview. I need to have the search bar in the table view itself. My goal is to have the same UISearchBar in the first section of multiple tableviews. Thanks so much.

  • Release Quickie

    - by Meltemi
    How to succinctly handle this situation. I'm not properly releasing contactDictionary in the if statement... NSNumber *pIDAsNumber; ... NSMutableDictionary *contactDictionary = [NSMutableDictionary dictionaryWithDictionary:[defaults dictionaryForKey:kContactDictionary]]; if (!contactDictionary) { contactDictionary = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] initWithCapacity:1]; } [contactDictionary setObject:pIDAsNumber forKey:[myClass.personIDAsNumber stringValue]]; [defaults setObject:contactDictionary forKey:kContactDictionary];

  • iPhone: Does it ever make sense for an object to retain its delegate?

    - by randombits
    According to the rules of memory management in a non garbage collected world, one is not supposed to retain a the calling object in a delegate. Scenario goes like this: I have a class that inherits from UITableViewController and contains a search bar. I run expensive search operations in a secondary thread. This is all done with an NSOperationQueue and subclasses NSOperation instances. I pass the controller as a delegate that adheres to a callback protocol into the NSOperation. There are edge cases when the application crashes because once an item is selected from the UITableViewController, I dismiss it and thus its retain count goes to 0 and dealloc gets invoked on it. The delegate didn't get to send its message in time as the results are being passed at about the same time the dealloc happens. Should I design this differently? Should I call retain on my controller from the delegate to ensure it exists until the NSOperation itself is dealloc'd? Will this cause a memory leak? Right now if I put a retain on the controller, the crashes goes away. I don't want to leak memory though and need to understand if there are cases where retaining the delegate makes sense. Just to recap. UITableViewController creates an NSOperationQueue and NSOperation that gets embedded into the queue. The UITableViewController passes itself as a delegate to NSOperation. NSOperation calls a method on UITableViewController when it's ready. If I retain the UITableViewController, I guarantee it's there, but I'm not sure if I'm leaking memory. If I only use an assign property, edge cases occur where the UITableViewController gets dealloc'd and objc_msgSend() gets called on an object that doesn't exist in memory and a crash is imminent.

  • How to remove an observer for NSNotification in a UIView?

    - by sudo rm -rf
    Hello! I've added an observer in a custom UIView I've created under initWithFrame:. [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(updateZipFromLocation:) name:@"zipFoundFromLocation" object:nil]; The problem is, this view is a subview. When the view is loaded again, it calls the initWithFrame message again, thus adding two observers and so on. How can I remove the observer when the view is going to disappear? Since it is a UIView, it says that viewWillDisappear:(BOOL)animated is not a valid method. Any ideas?

  • Reverse geocode street name and city as text

    - by Taylor Satula
    Hello, I have been having some trouble finding a good way to output just the street name and city as text (Infinite Loop, Cupertino shown here) that can be displayed in my iPhone app. This needs to be able to dynamically change as you change streets and city. I don't have the slightest idea of how to do this, I hope someone can help. I have attached a very rough image of what I am trying to acheave. I have found this (http://code.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/javascript/services.html#Geocoding) for google maps about how to reverse geocode using javascript, but what I do not understand is how this would be done in a iPhone development setting. I work in web design and I see how it would be done in HTML but I am very new to iPhone development and don't have the slightest clue of how it would be done here. If someone could spell out how to do this I would be extremely grateful. I cannot seem to find what I am looking for by searching Google. • iPhone UIView element similar to the lock screen

    - by Travis
    Does anyone know if there is an open source project for an UIView element that acts in a similar way to the lock screen for the iPhone. I am working on an app that has some sensitive data, and I want to add another layer of comfort for users, to be able to setup a 4 digit pin number on the app. I've seen apps like LoseIt and Weightbot that have similar functionality. There isn't any element for this in the UI Library from what I've been able to find, and was hoping some kind soul might have open sourced something similar to this. Thanks in advance!!!

  • editButtonItem set but no minus buttons?

    - by QAD
    My edit button is placed in viewDidLoad: self.navigationItem.rightBarButtonItem = self.editButtonItem; It shows up correctly on the nav bar, and tapping this button indeed change it to Done. However, no minus buttons show up in my table rows. Swiping a row, then tap Delete works, though. Any ideas? EDIT 1: Here's how I'm doing: - (void)loadView { tableView = [[UITableView alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] applicationFrame]]; tableView.delegate = self; tableView.dataSource = self; tableView.autoresizingMask = UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleWidth | UIViewAutoresizingFlexibleHeight; self.view = tableView; } EDIT 2: My observation is that the edit and minus buttons display fine if my tableview is created in IB (RootViewController). The other two (or three) tableview are created by the aforemention code, so that might be the problem. Guess I'd have to dive in to isEditing, editing and whatnot.
