• New version: Sun Rack II capacity calculator

  A new release of the Sun Rack II capacity calculator is available on eSTEP portal. The tool calculates all the data necessary (power requirements, BTU, number of rack units, needed power outlets etc.) while inserting the many different kind of HW equipment in aSun Rack II cabinet (version 1000 and 1200). It takes into consideration most of the available servers, storage devices, tapes, and Netra products. There are also a couple of third party products which are taken into account. • Drupal limit number of menu items in primary links

  Is there a way to set a limit on how many menu items users can add to Primary Links menu? I'm working on a Drupal site and I have a horizontal primary links nav bar. There is only room for no more than 7-8 links in the nav bar. I don't want the future maintainer of the site to add more than 8 items to the menu. Is there a way I can set a limit on that? • Windows Azure v1.7 Spring Release Today&ndash;New Management Dashboard

  Today, Microsoft will be publicly releasing a new version of Azure for public consumption.  The web conference, at http://www.meetwindowsazure.com will be airing at 1 PM PST.  They have already released an update to the Service Dashboard that can be accessed by going to http://manage.windowsazure.com.  I have some images of the new dashboard here that I have gathered and removed any PII from.  Let me know what you think! Tutorial The first thing you get after signing in is the tutorial: Landing After the tutorial completes, you get a screen with services that are active on your account on the left, and a list of ALL services (db/blob/SQL Azure) on the right.  I like the quick access to services across any of my subscriptions: Service Information These are images from a running web site with several roles.  I love how easy they have made many of the features: SQL Azure They have given some great quick functionality for looking at your DB information: Storage Here is the basic information that they give you for any storage accounts you have: Adding Services Super quick and easy to add services with the new UI: Conclusion I am EXCITED!  As you may have seen in the left side of my blog, I am an MCPD in Azure Development, and I must say that I am excited to see Microsoft moving forward with the technology and not letting it stagnate.  After as much as I have fought the other Azure dashboard, I like the friendliness and fluidity of this one. The important thing to note about ALL of the images above: this is HTML, not Silverlight.  The responsiveness is FAST on all of the actions I completed, and I believe that this is a big step forward for Azure… So, what do you think?

• Intercepting static and dynamic links using javascript

  Hi, I'm currently developing an ajax application and I'm looking for a feature that lets me intercept all static and dynamic links using javascript. The links look like these: <a href="link1/">link 1</a> <a href="link2/">link 2</a> etc. I then want the browser to redirect to: current.page/#link1/ rather than current.page/link1/. I'm using jQuery, so the live() function is an option, however using that as a solution just seems rather sluggish to me(am I hysterical?). If there is a way to intercept ALL links on a page, maybe through detecting a change in the address, that would greatly help. I've tried a few plugins for jQuery (jQuery address & SWFaddress) but they only seem to have event handlers that respond to changes in anchor tags in the address. Any ideas? thanks for your time

• How to record when user follows external links without slowing user down

  I want to track when user clicks external links for analytics purposes. The simplest solution is to replace all external links with links to special record-and-redirect controller, but that would slow the user unnecessarily. The second idea would be to override click event and within in $.post a message to record controller, then let the main event handler happen, which will usually be either click (open link in same tab) or middle click (open in new tab) - good either way, and the user won't have to wait for wait for my server to record it, it's fire-and-forget. (I don't care if users without Javascript don't get tracked) Is that a reasonable way to go? Or what else would be the best way to track all external link clicks?

• What does it mean to "have experience with the Unix/Linux command line"? [closed]

  I'm a new comp sci grad applying to jobs, and this requirement confuses me, especially since the job description (Python back-end developer) says it's the single most important thing ("Everything else we can teach you!") I mean, I know how to use the command line... I know your standard run-of-the-mill stuff like navigating around and manipulating files and permissions and using pipes and running applications, but what are they looking for when they say something like that? I'm aware there's no end to what you can do with the command line, but I was under the impression that after a certain point it's the sort of thing that only benefits server/system administrators.

• New Nokia SDK 2.0 for Java (beta)

  Nokia recently launched the Asha 305, 306, and 311, which are full touch devices with smartphone-like functionality at a low price. This makes them particularly attractive to consumers in the developing and developed world who may not be able to afford a smartphone but have a strong demand for apps and the smartphone experience. The Asha phones are the latest addition to Nokia's Series 40 platform, all of which support Java ME. The SDK includes new Full Touch API's (e.g. supporting pinch zoom) and Sensor support delivering an enhanced App experience. It also adds improved Maps API support for creating socio-local apps. There are a number of improvements in the tools including the Nokia IDE for Java ME with in-build Device-SDK Manager. Many code examples, training videos, webinars and sample code will help get you started. Porting guides and sample code show you how to port your android app to Java ME. If you don't have access to the hardware you can use Remote Device Access to test on real hardware that's remotely hosted for free. You can also find Light Weight UI Toolkit (LWUIT) support, which can speed development significantly. Both In-App Advertising and In-App Purchase (beta) is supported. • Hidden links are still clickable on the Android browser

  I've got a contextual menu that appears when a button is clicked. This menu has some links and after some seconds is hidden again. The problem is that after the menu has disappeared the links are still there. They are not shown but are clickable and the green border appears. And after some seconds they disappear. I've tryied many ways of hiding the menu: display: none, visibility: hidden, width: 0, height: 0, jquery hide, jquery fadeout... but none worked. Also hidding the links. Does anyone have a idea about what's happening? With the rest of the browsers it works without problem Thanks

• What's New in SGD 5.1?

  Oracle announced the latest version of Secure Global Desktop (SGD) this week with 3 major themes: Support for Android devices; Support for Desktop Chrome clients;  Support for Oracle Unified Directory. I'll talk about the new features in a moment, but a bit of context first: Oracle SGD - what, how and why?  Oracle Secure Global Desktop is Oracle's secure remote access product which allows users on almost any device, to access almost any type application which  is hosted in the data center, from almost any location. And it does this by sitting on the edge of the datacenter, between the user and the applications: This is actually a really smart environment for an increasing number of use cases where: Users need mobility of location AND device (i.e. work from anywhere); IT needs to ensure security of applications and data (of course!) The application requires an end-user environment which can't be guaranteed and IT may not own the client platform (e.g. BYOD, working from home, partners or contractors). Oracle has a a specific interest in this of course. As the leading supplier of enterprise applications, many of Oracle's customers, and indeed Oracle itself, fit these criteria. So, as an IT guy rolling out an application to your employees, if one of your apps absolutely needs, say,  IE10 with Java 6 update 32, how can you be sure that the user population has this, especially when they're using their own devices? In the SGD model you, the IT guy, can set up, say, a Windows Server running the exact environment required, and then use SGD to publish this app, without needing to worry any further about the device the end user is using. What's new?  So back to SGD 5.1 and what is new there: Android devices Since we introduced our support for iPad tablets in SGD 5.0 we've had a big demand from customers to extend this to Android tablets too, and so we're pleased to announce that 5.1 supports Android 4.x tablets such as Nexus 7 and 10, and the Galaxy Tab. Here's how it works, with screenshots from my Nexus 7: Simply point your browser to the SGD server URL and login; The workspace is the list of apps that the admin has deemed ok for you to run. You click on an application to run it (here's Excel and Oracle E-Business Suite): There's an extended on-screen keyboard (extended because desktop apps need keys that don't appear on a tablet keyboard such as ctrl, WIndow key, etc) and touch gestures can be mapped to desktop events (such as tap and hold to right click) All in all a pretty nice implementation for Android tablet users. Desktop Chrome Browsers SGD has always been designed around using a browser to access your applications. But traditionally, this has involved using Java to deliver the SGD client component. With HTML5 and Javascript engines becoming so powerful, we thought we'd see how well a pure web client could perform with desktop apps. And the answer was, surprisingly well. So with this release we now offer this additional way of working, which can be enabled by a simple bit of configuration. Here's a Linux desktop running in a tab in Chrome. And if you resize the browser window, the Linux desktop is resized by SGD too. Very cool! Oracle Unified Directory As I mentioned above, a lot of Oracle users already benefit from SGD. And a lot of Oracle customers use Oracle Unified Directory as their Enterprise and Carrier grade user directory. So it makes a lot of sense that SGD now supports this LDAP directory for both Authentication and as a means to determine which users get which applications, e.g. publish the engineering app to the guys in the Development group, but give everyone E-Business Suite to let them do their expenses. Summary With new devices, and faster 4G networking becoming more prevalent, the pressure for businesses to move to a increasingly mobile enterprise is stronger than ever. SGD is good for users, and even better for IT. By offering the user the ability to work from anywhere, and IT the control and security they need, everyone wins with SGD. • I bought a new battery and Ubuntu 12.10 isn't recognizing it

  I inherited my mom's old laptop and installed Ubuntu over top of Vista, so now it is purely Ubuntu. Her old battery only lasted about 10 minutes, so it had to be plugged in all the time, which I didn't like. So I bought a battery, and inserted it in when it came. The laptop doesn't see it at at all- no battery icon whatsoever. I can pull it out and put the old battery in and it recognizes it. The new battery comes with a program (a .exe) to update the bios to accommodate the new battery... But don't have Windows anymore and Wine gives me an error when I try to run it, so I am at a loss of ideas. I thought of running a virtual machine of Windows to install it, or run a Windows To Go drive(a new feature of Windows 8), but I don't think those are good ideas as they may not work or permanently ruin something. I am not an extremely experienced user of Ubuntu/Linux, so I don't where to go from here. I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR, if that helps. Also note that I just installed Ubuntu the other day and have nothing important on the pc yet, so I am not afraid to reinstall Ubuntu if it may help. Thanks!

• The New Social Developer Community: a Q&A

  In our last blog, we introduced the opportunities that lie ahead for social developers as social applications reach across every aspect and function of the enterprise. Leading the upcoming JavaOne Social Developer Program October 2 at the San Francisco Hilton is Roland Smart, VP of Social Marketing at Oracle. I got to ask Roland a few of the questions an existing or budding social developer might want to know as social extends beyond interacting with friends and marketing and into the enterprise. Why is it smart for developers to specialize as social developers? What opportunities lie in the immediate future that’s making this a critical, in-demand position? Social has changed the way we interact with brands and with each other across the web. As we acclimate to a new social paradigm we also look to extend its benefits into new areas of our lives. The workplace is a logical next step, and we're starting to see social interactions more and more in this context. But unlocking the value of social interactions requires technical expertise and knowledge of developing social apps that tap into the social graph. Developers focused on integrating social experiences into enterprise applications must be familiar with popular social APIs and must understand how to build enterprise social graphs of their own. These developers are part of an emerging community of social developers and are key to socially enabling the enterprise. Facebook rebranded their Preferred Developer Consultant Group (PDC) and the Preferred Marketing Developers (PMD) to underscore the fact developers are required inside marketing organizations to unlock the full potential of their platform. While this trend is starting on the marketing side with marketing developers, this is just an extension of the social developer concept that will ultimately drive social across the enterprise. What are some of the various ways social will be making its way into every area of enterprise organizations? How will it be utilized and what kinds of applications are going to be needed to facilitate and maximize these changes? Check out Oracle’s vision for the social-enabled enterprise. It’s a high-level overview of how social will impact across the enterprise. Java is certainly one of the best platforms on which to build social experiences because there’s such a large existing community of Java developers. This means you can affordably recruit talent, and it's possible to effectively solicit advice from the community through various means, including our new Social Developer Community. Beyond that, there are already some great proof points Java is the best platform for creating social experiences at scale. Consider LinkedIn and Twitter. Tell us more about the benefits of collaboration and more about what the Oracle Social Developer Community is. What opportunities does that offer up and what are some of the ways developers can actively participate in and benefit from that community? Much has been written about the overall benefits of collaborating with other developers. Those include an opportunity to introduce yourself to the community of social developers, foster a reputation, establish an expertise, contribute to the advancement of the space, get feedback, experiment with the latest concepts, and gain inspiration. In short, collaboration is a tool that must be applied properly within a framework to get the most value out of it. The OSDC is a place where social developers can congregate to discuss the opportunities/challenges of building social integrations into their applications. What “needs” will this community have? We don't know yet. But we wanted to create a forum where we can engage and understand what social developers are thinking about, excited about, struggling with, etc. The OSDL can then step in if we can help remove barriers and add value in a serious and committed way so Oracle can help drive practice development.

• New Release of Oracle EPM (Enterprise Performance Management)

  I'm a huge fan of Hyperion products and consider Hyperion to be one of the best acquisitions Oracle has made in terms of applications. So I am really excited to talk about their latest release, Release 11.1.2 of the Oracle EPM System. This is EPM's largest release in 2 years, and it's jam-packed with new modules and features. In terms of brand new products, there are three: 1. Public Sector Planning and Budgeting meets the needs of public sector agencies, higher education, governments, etc. that have complex budget requirements. It supports position or employee-based budgeting and integrates with MS Office and your ERP ledgers to perform commitment control. 2. Hyperion Financial Close Management is a complete financial close solution that orchestrates the entire close process from subledgers and general ledger to financial reporting and disclosure submissions. And of course, it is integrated with GL systems and consolidation systems. I saw a demo of this and it looked pretty slick. They have this unified close calendar that looks like a regular calendar that gives each person participating in the close process a task list. It comes with a Gantt chart that shows the relationships and dependencies among closing tasks. There are dashboards to allow you to track the close progress and completion of tasks as well as perform trend analysis and see how much time is being spent on different activities in the close process. This gives you visibility that you never had before to understand where the bottlenecks are and where improvements could be made. I think what I liked best about this product was that it provides a central place for all participants to communicate their progress. When I worked as an Accountant, we used ad hoc tools, such as spreadsheets, Word documents, emails, and phone calls during the close process. I like the idea of having a central system to track the overall progress as well as automate the entire financial close process. Who knows, maybe Accountants won't have to revolve their lives around the month end close anymore with a tool like this. Those periodic fire drills can become predictable, well managed processes. 3. Disclosure Management is an out-of-the-box, pre-packaged XBRL solution to meet statutory reporting requirements. This product is really going to help companies improve the timeliness of producing financial reports. Reports can be authored using MS Word and Excel and then XBRL instance documents can be produced with its embedded XBRL tags. It even supports footnotes and disclosures of non-financial information. With a product like this, companies no longer have to outsource their XBRL filing; they can bring it back in house to save costs and time. In terms of other enhancements, they have ERP Integrator that provides integration and drill downs from Hyperion products to source systems, such as Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, and SAP. No other vendor offers this level of integration. There's also a new product that links Oracle Essbase directly to Hyperion Financial Management for internal financial reporting, and new integrations between Hyperion Financial Management and Oracle's GRC products. They also improved the usability of Oracle Hyperion Planning. They made it much easier for end users to use the system via the web or via MS Excel when submitting plans and budgets. • SQL SERVER – Simple Demo of New Cardinality Estimation Features of SQL Server 2014

  SQL Server 2014 has new cardinality estimation logic/algorithm. The cardinality estimation logic is responsible for quality of query plans and majorly responsible for improving performance for any query. This logic was not updated for quite a while, but in the latest version of SQL Server 2104 this logic is re-designed. The new logic now incorporates various assumptions and algorithms of OLTP and warehousing workload. Cardinality estimates are a prediction of the number of rows in the query result. The query optimizer uses these estimates to choose a plan for executing the query. The quality of the query plan has a direct impact on improving query performance. ~ Souce MSDN Let us see a quick example of how cardinality improves performance for a query. I will be using the AdventureWorks database for my example. Before we start with this demonstration, remember that even though you have SQL Server 2014 to see the effect of new cardinality estimates, you will need your database compatibility mode set to 120 which is for SQL Server 2014. If your server instance of SQL Server 2014 but you have set up your database compatibility mode to 110 or any other earlier version, you will get performance from your query like older version of SQL Server. Now we will execute following query in two different compatibility mode and see its performance. (Note that my SQL Server instance is of version 2014). • New Management Console in Java SE Advanced 8u20

  Java SE 8 update 20 is a new feature release designed to provide desktop administrators with better control of their managed systems. The release notes for 8u20 are available from the public JDK release notes page. This release is not a Critical Patch Update (CPU). I would like to call attention to two noteworthy features of Oracle Java SE Advanced, the commercially supported version of Java SE for enterprises that require both support and specialized tools. The new Advanced Management Console provides a way to monitor and understand client systems at scale. It allows organizations to track usage and more easily create and manage client configuration like Deployment Rule Sets (DRS). DRS can control execution of tracked applications as well as specify compatibility of which application should use which Java SE installation. The new MSI Installer integrates into various desktop management tools, making it easier to customize and roll out different Java SE versions. Advanced Management Console The Advanced Management Console is part of Java SE Advanced designed for desktop administrators, whose users need to run many different Java applications. It provides usage tracking for those Applet & Web Start applications to help identify them for guided DRS creation. DRS can then be verified against the tracked data, to ensure that end-users can run their application against the appropriate Java version with no prompts. Usage tracking also has a different definition for Java SE than it does for most software applications. Unlike most applications where usage can be determined by a simple run-count, Java is a platform used for launching other applications. This means that usage tracking must answer both "how often is this Java SE version used" and "what applications are launched by it." Usage Tracking One piece of Java SE Advanced is a centralized usage tracker. Simply placing a properties file on the client informs systems to report information to this usage tracker, so that the desktop administrator can better understand usage. Information is sent via UDP to prevent any delay on the client. The usage tracking server resides at a central location on the intranet to collect information from those clients. The information is stored in a normalized database for performance, meaning that a single usage tracker can handle a large number of clients. Guided Deployment Rule Sets Deployment Rule Sets were introduced in Java 7 update 40 (September 2013) in order to help administrators control security prompts and guide compatibility. A previous post, Deployment Rule Sets by Example, explains how to configure a rule set so that most applications run against the most secure version but a specific applet may run against the Java version that was current several years ago. There are a different set of questions that can be asked by a desktop administrator in a large or distributed firm: Where are the Java RIAs that our users need? Which RIA needs which Java version? Which users need which Java versions? How do I verify these answers once I have them? The guided deployment rule set creation uses usage tracker data to identify applications both by certificate hash and location. After creating the rules, a comparison tool exists to verify them against the tracked data: If you intend to run an RIA, is it green? If something specific should be blocked, is it red? This makes user-testing easier. MSI Installer The Windows Installer format (MSI) provides a number of benefits for desktop administrators that customize or manage software at scale. Unlike the basic installer that most users obtain from Java.com or OTN, this installer is built around customization and integration with various desktop management products like SCCM. Desktop administrators using the MSI installer can use every feature provided by the format, such as silent installs/upgrades, low-privileged installations, or self-repair capabilities Customers looking for Java SE Advanced can download the MSI installer through their My Oracle Support (MOS) account. Java SE Advanced The new features in Java SE Advanced make it easier for desktop administrators to identify and control client installations at scale. Administrators at organizations that want either the tools or associated commercial support should consider Java SE Advanced.

• Copy New Files Only in .NET

  Recently I had a client that had a need to copy files from one folder to another. However, there was a process that was running that would dump new files into the original folder every minute or so. So, we needed to be able to copy over all the files one time, then also be able to go back a little later and grab just the new files. After looking into the System.IO namespace, none of the classes within here met my needs exactly. Of course I could build it out of the various File and Directory classes, but then I remembered back to my old DOS days (yes, I am that old!). The XCopy command in DOS (or the command prompt for you pure Windows people) is very powerful. One of the options you can pass to this command is to grab only newer files when copying from one folder to another. So instead of writing a ton of code I decided to simply call the XCopy command using the Process class in .NET. The command I needed to run at the command prompt looked like this: XCopy C:\Original\*.* D:\Backup\*.* /q /d /y What this command does is to copy all files from the Original folder on the C drive to the Backup folder on the D drive. The /q option says to do it quitely without repeating all the file names as it copies them. The /d option says to get any newer files it finds in the Original folder that are not in the Backup folder, or any files that have a newer date/time stamp. The /y option will automatically overwrite any existing files without prompting the user to press the "Y" key to overwrite the file. To translate this into code that we can call from our .NET programs, you can write the CopyFiles method presented below. I created a string with the arguments then filled in the source and destination folders using the string.Format() method. Finally you call the Start method of the Process class passing in the ProcessStartInfo object. That's all there is to calling any command in the operating system. Very simple, and much less code than it would have taken had I coded it using the various File and Directory classes. • New Working Environment Starting November

After I’ve been working in the private sectors for so many years (the 2 years when I was working as IT trainer in a secondary school is not counted, as I was working under a contract with a private IT training agency), I’ve decided to try my luck into public sector. And fortunately, I passed the interview and I was offered a position of Web Administrator in a government statutory board, that’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (of Singapore). During my previous employment with a Japanese MNC (multinational company), it was a totally new environment for me, as I had never worked for a Japanese company before, but the first time I work for Japanese company also gave me the very first nightmare I have with them, and vowed not to work for them anymore, and any other Japanese companies. No doubt I have freedom of choosing the tools and methods I wish to use for the projects, but the project management is simply too messy and out of order. And a lot of time, I don’t find that everyone is working as a team, more like achieving their own goals. Accountability for project is not shared, all lumped onto the shoulders of the developer in charge (they called it Software Engineer). I was working on a windows based .NET project, which I already voiced out that it’s not manageable by just 1 software engineer, but it seems like nobody cares, even the one who propose the solution to customer doesn’t care much. What he cares is whether you deliver the project on time so that he can please his customer and the senior management of his good work. Too many stories to tell, and I just simple doesn’t want to talk too much on this as it has already became the past to me. With my new title with the government agency, I hope to contribute my best to them, while learning as much as I can. I will share whatever I can on technologies, methodologies, and etc whichever I’m allowed and permitted to (of course, for those non-work-related stuff, I would be glad to share with you without much hesitation). • MySQL for Excel new features (1.2.0): Save and restore Edit sessions

  Today we are going to talk about another new feature included in the latest MySQL for Excel release to date (1.2.0) which can be Installed directly from our MySQL Installer downloads page.Since the first release you were allowed to open a session to directly edit data from a MySQL table at Excel on a worksheet and see those changes reflected immediately on the database. You were also capable of opening multiple sessions to work with different tables at the same time (when they belong to the same schema). The problem was that if for any reason you were forced to close Excel or the Workbook you were working on, you had no way to save the state of those open sessions and to continue where you left off you needed to reopen them one by one. Well, that's no longer a problem since we are now introducing a new feature to save and restore active Edit sessions. All you need to do is in click the options button from the main MySQL for Excel panel:  And make sure the Edit Session Options (highlighted in yellow) are set correctly, specially that Restore saved Edit sessions is checked: Then just begin an Edit session like you would normally do, select the connection and schema on the main panel and then select table you want to edit data from and click over Edit MySQL Data. and just import the MySQL data into Excel:You can edit data like you always did with the previous version. To test the save and restore saved sessions functionality, first we need to save the workbook while at least one Edit session is opened and close the file.Then reopen the workbook. Depending on your version of Excel is where the next steps are going to differ:Excel 2013 extra step (first): In Excel 2013 you first need to open the workbook with saved edit sessions, then click the MySQL for Excel Icon on the the Data menu (notice how in this version, every time you open or create a new file the MySQL for Excel panel is closed in the new window). Please note that if you work on Excel 2013 with several workbooks with open edit sessions each at the same time, you'll need to repeat this step each time you open one of them: Following steps:  In Excel 2010 or previous, you just need to make sure the MySQL for Excel panel is already open at this point, if its not, please do the previous step specified above (Excel 2013 extra step). For Excel 2010 or older versions you will only need to do this previous step once.  When saved sessions are detected, you will be prompted what to do with those sessions, you can click Restore to continue working where you left off, click Discard to delete the saved sessions (All edit session information for this file will be deleted from your computer, so you will no longer be prompted the next time you open this same file) or click Nothing to continue without opening saved sessions (This will keep the saved edit sessions intact, to be prompted again about them the next time you open this workbook): And there you have it, now you will be able to save your Edit sessions, close your workbook or turn off your computer and you will still be able to reopen them in the future, to continue working right where you were. Today we talked about how you can save your active Edit sessions and restore them later, this is another feature included in the latest MySQL for Excel release (1.2.0).
