• Can I improve performance by refactoring SQL commands into C# classes?

  Currently, my entire website does updating from SQL parameterized queries. It works, we've had no problems with it, but it can occasionally be very slow. I was wondering if it makes sense to refactor some of these SQL commands into classes so that we would not have to hit the database so often. I understand hitting the database is generally the slowest part of any web application For example, say we have a class structure like this: Project (comprised of) Tasks (comprised of) Assignments Where Project, Task, and Assignment are classes. At certain points in the site you are only working on one project at a time, and so creating a Project class and passing it among pages (using Session, Profile, something else) might make sense. I imagine this class would have a Save() method to save value changes. Does it make sense to invest the time into doing this? Under what conditions might it be worth it?

• How to keep assigned SAS user promts from disappearing after you sign out of SAS?

  I have successfully assigned user prompts by: right clicking on the program - properties - prompts - Prompt Manager and adding what I want the user to edit when the run button is pushed. What I have not yet discovered is how to keep those prompt assignments after I exit SAS. When I reopen the program the prompts are gone/blank. I understand that I need to edit the program file in which I want to use a prompt. The prompt should be added to the code as &prompt-name. But I have not yet found code or examples on how to do this. Can anybody help?

I feel this is a tad easy, so I wanted to ask, as professional web programmers, are most assignments harder than this?

• Overloaded function print

  For one of the assignments I need to create an overloaded function print that prints an element or all elements of an array. I have no problem with printing the entire array: for( int i = 0; i < size; i++) cout << list [ i ] <<endl; But how do I make the same function to print only one particular element? The way I see it is to ask a user what to print, either one element or all numbers. Or am I missing something here?

• How do I fix this warning in my mx:request tag?

  I'm running an HTTPService with the following request: <mx:request xmlns=""> <view>{myViewStack.selectedChild.name}</view> </mx:request> The idea being to pass which child is selected on the viewstack to the php page, and then get that back so I can run some logic based on which child of the viewstack was selected at the time. Everything seems to work, but I get the following warning: Data binding will not be able to detect assignments to "name". This doesn't seem to be causing any trouble, but I know warnings usually mean that I am not following the best practice. How can I fix this? I don't really need this item to be bound, because the name will never change at runtime, but I don't know how else to include it in the request.

• How can I remove the head of a main function?

  I am trying to move some code from a seperate binary and have it inside my main program. Unfortunately I can't mimic the initialization variables for the main function. How can I create argc and argv by hand? Can someone give me some example assignments. since it looks like this: int main(int argc, char *argv[]) I figured I could assign them like this: int argc=1; char *argv[0]="Example"; But it doesn't work. Can anyone tell me how this might be done?

• While programming, what to do when facing with a seemingly unsolvable situation with a time limit?

  This is not a technical question, but rather a social and methodical one. I am a computer sciences student and I usually have really tough programming assignments. I don`t know if it is only happening to me but sometimes, particularly when deadline is approaching, i find myself in a harsh situation. I cannot find my mistake in the code or come up with a another great idea. Then boredom comes in and the problem begins to seem unsolvable. I know there are more-than-great professional coders here. I would like to learn their ideas to cope with this situation. Is it better to focus on something else for a while and try again or try harder and harder and look for the solution on the net etc...

• MySQL -- How to do this better?

• Insert a row and avoiding race condition (PHP/MySQL)

  I'm working on a multiplayer game which has a lobby-like area where players select "sectors" to enter. The lobby gateway is powered by PHP, while actual gameplay is handled by one or more Java servers. The datastore is MySQL. The happy path: A player chooses a sector and tells the lobby he'd like to enter. The lobby checks whether this is okay, including checking whether there are too many players in the sector (compares the entry count in sector assignments for that sector against the sector's max_players value). The player is added to the sector_assignments table pairing him with the sector. The player client receives a passkey that will let him connect to the appropriate game server. The race condition: If two players request access to the same sector at close to same time, I can envision a case where they are both added because there was one space free when their check was started and max players gets exceeded. Is the best solution LOCK TABLE on sector_assignments? Is there another option?

• Keep Track of Your Tasks with toDoo

  A tasks list can be convenient but most times you can not include details for those tasks or have to have an online account to do so. If you want to keep your tasks list with you on your computer or laptop and be able to add plenty of details then you might want to look at toDoo. Note: Requires Adobe AIR (download link at bottom of article). toDoo in Action Once you have installed toDoo everything is rather straightforward for getting started. The first time that you start toDoo there will be a temporary “fill-in” for the “Subject & Details Areas”. Simply highlight over the temporary text and add your information. Notice that if desired you can easily set a custom date and time for your tasks right below the “Details Area”. Note: toDoo does not minimize to the “System Tray”. Once you have everything set all that you need to do is click on “add task”. Here was our first new task being viewed in the “toDoo Description Tab”. Time to add a second task…here you can see the drop-down calendar. You can scroll through and select a different month very easily…just click on the desired day and it will be automatically set. Adding our second task… If you need to edit any of the details for a particular task you can do so in the “Edit toDoo Tab”. This nice little app is convenient and easy to use. Conclusion ToDoo is a simple straightforward app that lets you keep track of your tasks list and relevant details without an online account (especially helpful if you are without a wireless connection at a given moment).   OK.  I admit it.  I have been horrible at this blogging thing.  However, I have made a commitment to get better at it so here goes.  I have many crazy ideas when it comes to coding and how to make my processes better and now is the time to get them down on paper and get your feedback.  Now, these ideas might not be nearly as wild and crazy as Charlie Sheen, but at least they help me get through my coding assignments. So let’s start by laying out the vision and objectives of this exercise.  I have been trying to come up with the best set of tools, tips and practices so I can get a small team to be as productive as possible without burning out my resources.  My thoughts tend to lean towards the coding practices first as this is what I have been doing for years.  However, as one looks at the process as a whole, we need to remember to keep the users in mind.  If we don’t have a user to accept our application, do we really have an application in the first place? I have been using a commercial framework from DevExpress called eXpress Application Framework (XAF) with their eXpress Persistent Objects (XPO) behind the scenes for a few years.  We have had tremendous success with it and even implemented a code generation layer to save us some time.  Now we want more!!!   First, a link to the blog I can no longer edit because Office Live blew away my digital identity and so I can no longer log into it (the source of a loooong blog about protecting your digital identity sometime when I have more time and after it has played out to the end) http://greentug.spaces.live.com/ The following are the communities I participate in: Green & Sustainability.  I run a virtual user group on Green and Sustainability as it relates to developers and software architects.  It was located at greentug.groups.live.com, and we will need to find a new digital location for it, because I am locked out of that site as well. BizSpark Tampa Bay:  I run a BizSpark group for Microsoft technologists (meetup.com, search for BizSpark Tampa Bay) and speak at Code Camps about "No Better Time to Start Your Own Tech Business".  The meetup group facilitates a balanced presentation that is respectful to anyone wanting to start their own business, whether part-time or full-time, whether micro (just you), sustainable (grow to 2-25-ish, self-funded), high growth (get venture capital or other funding, grow it, sell it within 5 years, do it again), or hybrid (the new model going forward).  It is an "action" group, with assignments and homework if you want to get the most out of it.   At the end of a year you will either have your business on the path to where you want it to be, or you will know the steps you need to do to get it there. Women in Technology Have been participating in the Women in Technology community since 2008, my main interests in this area are mentoring women in the workplace to have them believe they can become geeks and double their income, and to mentor them with respect to starting and running their own business. • Somewhere to get inspiration - Pair up the creative with the tech

  I am a somewhat green developer; some work experience, last year of school. As most of you, I am constantly working on an assortment of personal projects. Since my mind often has a somewhat drifting characteristic; I am not always able to keep the projects in check. After some time they all exhibit the moral fiber of Vikings, harlots and chain-letter-knitters. This includes constant forking, round-abouting, eating of school assignments of rather mundane, and hence pretty yawn-inducing, specifications, and of course quite a bit of gathering of folder dust. Well, on to my question....is there a place, forum... or something with the purpose of linking people with ideas to the people actually being able to bring said ideas to life? Of course, I know of the professional ones, like rent-a-coder and such. And there seem to be a lot of open source projects available for participation. What I'm looking for doesn't really fit into any of those categories....the form would be somewhat like rent-a-coder, but this is ideas&inspiration, not bubble-sort-my-quarterly-for-a-buck. The possibilities for developing bonds, spicy code, and plain old fun seem quite possible.As I see it, the main benefit would be that we (that is the tech-flipside of the proverbial eCoin) get something worthwhile to do, rather than squeeze the last creative grain out of our code-heavy brains.To give it some perspective...: My last project consists of an absurd jQuery-plugin that includes animated png-robots migrating from Google Earth to drag a html-element of your choosing onto the map, where it gets color, for so to be dragged back by this poorly animated robot.... Often, the line between the creative and the tech is blurred, to say the least. I wouldn't think that would be a problem. Think someone who has developed a nifty little windows application, then sees possibility for a broader use, perhaps some sort of networking functionality. This fellow sadly lacks the skill to implememet this. So he, she or it would then seek a developer with the know-how and they could complete this project together. So, do any of you know of such a place, or can nudge in the right direction? And yes, I understand completely that I should be dedicating myself to doing school work, or applying for mundane developer positions, so please.... :-) UPDATE Sadly, I'm situated in Oslo, Norway, and the number of developers are somewhat limited...and I have had quite some ahem personality issues with the ones who are available ;-) So I feel I must go deeper; search the multitude of the web...

My career at Oracle started at Oracle Headquartes in San Francisco as a Project Manager, building Computer Based Training Products. After spending 3 years in Dubai, my husband and I moved to the USA as he wanted to study a MBA there. • File recovery from Mac results in random files and extensions – how do I get my data back?

  This Mac hard drive was dying. Someone I knew did a file recovery and got as many files as he could. The program (not sure how it was done, or what program it was) dished out a bunch of folders names such as: DIR56.TOC DIR55.CUR DIR54.GPZ DIR53.GZI … and so forth, all the way down to DIR0.LZH. Some of the file extensions I do understand — like .JPEG, or .MOV — but most of them are ones I've never heard of. I've googled some of them like .TOC, wich stands for "table of contents", but I don't understand how to transfer that data back to the Mac. Currently, they are on a Windows machine. They are being transfered onto an external hard drive that the Mac can read. It can also see all the files. However, the few that I tested to see if the Mac recognizes them (like .TOC and .CUR) cannot be opened. Anyone have any idea as to what I should do? There are some important assignments on there I need to get. EDIT: Data transfer was most likely done by: Easy Recover 6 professional (95% sure, no guarantee)

• Is there a reason to use internal DNS over 8.8.8.8 ?

  I've inherited a LAN where there is really no name resolution being done for local resources... i.e. all users enter IP addresses manually to access printers and network shares. There are no LDAP servers or domains either....workstations simply connect to the network without authentication. DHCP is handled via a core switch... And DNS settings are also handed out by this same core switch. Currently, the DNS assignments are as such, and in this order: 10.1.1.50 / old Pentium III Windows 2003 box running DNS service- 128 MB RAM 169.200.x.x / ISP 4.2.2.2. / the well known public one There a couple thousand clients on the LAN....and most of the activity is web browsing ( this is an educational setting ). First of all, the server seems woefully underpowered for this task...yet there is virtually no slowness when web surfing by clients.... How much horsepower should a heavily used DNS server have ? I have also heard using 4.2.2.2 is a bad idea .... since it has been so overused... Finally, wouldn't it make sense to have a robust external DNS server listed first? ( Google's 8.8.8.8 would seem to be a logical candidate )

• Windows XP consuming drive letters

  This one's a bit of a stumper. I'm running XP SP3, current with all fixes, etc. My problem is that I can assign a drive letter to a container file (explained below), it works just fine. But once I close the container, the drive letter is no longer available until the next boot. I've got some confidential data that I've placed in a container volume. I've used TrueCrypt (www.truecrypt.com) and FreeOTFE (www.freeotfe.org), with both installed and portable versions for both, with the same result. I open the container file, assign it to a drive letter (say R:), and run some portable apps that are within the volume. When I'm done, I close the container, and the drive letter is released. Fine so far. However, when I attempt to re-open it, the previous drive letter (in this case R:) is no longer available. It's not mapped to anything, it's just unavailable. Even attempting something like "subst R: C:\" returns "Invalid Parameter - R:". I can use the S: drive, no problem, but the next day I have to use T:, then U:, etc. Eventually, I have to reboot to reclaim all of of the drive letters. Unfortunately, everything I've read about drive letters relates to USB assignments, which doesn't apply here. I've tried the "show hidden" command (set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1) with no success. And the Disk Management tool doesn't apply either, since it's not a physical drive. Does anyone know where Windows keeps the list of drive letters? And is there anything short of a reboot that can be used to reset it?

• How can I control disk numbering (enumeration) in Windows 7 Disk Management?

  A desktop system had two drives (Assigned C and D, which were enumerated in Disk Management as Disk 0 and Disk 1). A new SSD was added as the boot drive, after copying the C drive to the SSD. The SSD was connected to SATA 0 (master) port on the motherboard. The previous C Drive was moved to SATA 2 and is reformatted as a non-booting NTFS partition. The D drive remained on SATA 1. The system boots and everything seems fine. I was able to manually adjust the Drive Letters. However, the list in Disk Management is re-ordered. Disk 0 is the the previous Disk 2 (D Drive) on SATA 1, Disk 1 is the new Boot Drive (now C) on SATA 0, and Disk 2 is the former C Drive (now assigned E) on SATA 2. Does the Disk 0, 1, 2, designation mean anything? I would prefer to have them display in Disk Management as Drives C, D, and E from top to bottom. Is the Disk enumeration based on the SATA port or something else? (If it was based on SATA Port, they should be ordered C, D, E. Is there any way to re-order the Disk number assignments? What actually does determine the Disk number enumeration?

• IIS7 ASP.NET application - 2 identical apps in 2 identical app pools, 1 is responsive and 1 is not

  I have an ASP.NET (v4.0) web app that is installed in a virtual directory (as an application) and is hosted in it's own app pool. This is repeated for each instance of the app (i.e. per customer). The app pools are integrated (not classic) mode and LoadUserProfile is set to true. Otherwise, default settings. Each instance currently has it's own copy of the code/config, and it's own data folder (basic file read/writes). 1 instance of this app runs well (operation used for comparison takes ~4 seconds). Every other instance runs slowly (from 10-25 seconds for the same operation). If I move the slower instance to the "fastest" app pool that instance springs to life. If I move the faster instance into the slower app pool that instance slows to a crawl. The app pools were created in the same way initially - manually. I later used the powershell copy routine to ensure an exact copy of the faster app pool and still the same behaviour. Comparing the apppool.config files shows they are identical barring the virtual directory assignments. There are no shared resources that are being blocked, so far as I can tell, and I tested that by shutting down the performant app pool and restarting... slow is still slow, and then when I restart that app pool (so it's loaded last) it's still faster...

• Barriers to IPv6 deployment: addressing

  There are several things that are keeping IPv6 deployment from being a topic of active discussion here at my work. There are the usual technical issues, but one non-technical one appears to be a major stumbling block on the path to actually getting a deployment project going. Addresses, memorizing of. Specifically, IPv4 addresses are comprehensible, and IPv6 addresses just look like a big long string of hex. The human mind has real trouble memorizing lists of more than 7-8 items, and an IPv4 address (192.168.231.148) has four items in it which makes it easy for us to memorize. A fully populated IPv6 address has not only 8 sections, but each section has 4 hex digits in it. IPv6 addresses were not designed for memorization. To the technician who knows that the DNS server is at 192.168.42.42 (or more likely "42.42", since the company prefix is likely memorized), the idea of memorizing an IPv6 address fills them with dread. Which in turn makes them much less enthusiastic about participating in an IPv6 deployment project. Because of how our network works we're not fully dynamic in terms of v4 addressing. We have several to many subnets that are entirely statically assigned for a variety of reasons, chief among them being that the overhead of static DHCP assignments is perceived as being too great. Also, some devices still aren't smart enough to pull DNS addresses out of DHCP while also having a static assignment, and therefore require manually configured DNS settings. Therefore, some v6 address memorization will have to be done. We're not under any mandate to get v6 out the door, so we don't have pressure from the top. However, it is time to start prepping our infrastructure to handle IPv6 even if we don't convert wholesale. For those of you who have been in IPv6-land for a while, what short-cut methods do you use to discuss or keep track of subnets and specific/critical IP addresses? If I can help reduce some of the dread surrounding IPv6 we might get the project going.

• Multiple Routers, Failover, DHCP and multiple gateways. NOT WAN-failover

  I've had a look around google and this forum but could not find an answer to my question. So probably one of you can help me a little. My intended setup is: Router R1: wan connection to isp. connected backup server. provides some wireless SSID. other connected devices like printer, laptop, etc. both wired and wireless. Router R2: no wan connection to isp but connected to R2. connects mp3-streamer and music server. also serves as a wireless access point with same SSID. other than described connections only wireless connections. I would like to be able to control music even if R1 is off, e.g. with no internet connection. On the other hand I would like to access internet also in the case that R2 is off, i.e. no music access. Last but not least I would like to stream internet radio, i.e., R1 and R2 are on, and music is streamed from internet to R1 to R2 to streamer. I would like to realize all this using DHCP (also using static assignments) so i do not have to configure statically on android, laptop, etc. So my questions are: Can I make DHCP provide a list of two default gateways R1,R2? In order to make clients fallback to other gateway if currently assigned gateway is turned off? Thanks in advance, u_b

• Determining how all memory is used in Windows Server 2008

  Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 system, which has 12GB of RAM. If I list all processes in the Task Manager, and SUM() the memory of each process (Working Set, Memory (Private Working Set), Commit Size, ...), I never reach more than 4-5GB that should be "in use". However, task manager reports this server has 11GB in use via the "Performance" tab. I'm failing in determining where all that used RAM is going. It doesn't seem to be system cache, but I can not be sure. It might be a memory leak in one of the appliances, but I'm struggling to find out which one. The server's memory keeps filing up, and eventually forces us to reboot the device to clear it.
