  • HP Proliant ML115 G5 - Boot order lost after reboot

    - by Filipe YaBa Polido
I have one HP Proliant ML 115 G5 (AMD) with the latest BIOS (07-06-2009) and recently I've installed an USB disk. This is a common problem on old Proliant servers. When you plug the USB disk, BIOS boot order changes and tries to boot via USB. So, I'll change the BIOS settings and make the SATA disk the default boot device. The problem is, when I need to unplug the usb disk, and plug it again later. I can't be always changing the BIOS settings... How can one solve this for ever?!?!

  • Lost "VGA Display" color profile in OS X

    - by Justin Love
OS X Display settings used to have a color profile named VGA Display, which I found quite usefully for finding color problems before hooking up a projector. Currently, this profile (along with a number of others I've collected from projectors in the past year) is not available. I'm currently OS X 10.6.6 and my best guess is the profiles got wiped out during the last upgrade. None of the available color profiles seem to stink quite enough. Am I overlooking a renamed profile? Is there somewhere I could get a 'VGA Display' profile to install on my computer?

  • KeePass lost password and/or corruption due to Dropbox/KeePassX

    - by GummiV
I started using Keepass about a month ago to hold my passwords and online accounts info. Everything was stored in a single .kdb file, only protected with a password. I'm using Windows 7. Now Keepass can't open my .kdb file with the error "Invalid/wrong key". I'm fairly confident I have the right password. Altough I might have mixed up a few letters I've tried about two dozen different combinations to minimize that possibility - but can't rule it out though. My guess is however that the .kdb file got corrupted, either due to Dropbox syncing (only using it on one computer though) or because I edited the file using KeePassX on Ubuntu (dual boot on the same computer, accessing a mounted Win7 NTFS partition), or possibly a combination of both. I have tried restoring older versions(even the original one) from Dropbox and trying out all possible passwords without any luck. (which does seem to rule out KeePassX as the culprit, since oldest copies are before I edited the file from Ubuntu) I have tried opening the file with the "Repair KeePass Database file" which always gives the "0xA Invalid/corrupt file structure" (the same error for when a wrong password is typed). I was wondering if there was any way for me to salvage my hard-gathered data. I know generally that brute force cracking is not feasible, but since I can remember probably more than half of the usernames/passwords, any maybe the fact that one of them does come up fairly often (my go-to pass for trivial stuff), that might simplify the brute force process to a doable time frame. Maybe the brute-force thing might incorporate the fact that I know the password length and what characters it's made from. (If we assume corruption, not a password-blackout on my part) I could do some programming if there are any libraries or routines that I could use. Other people seem to have had a similar probem http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=6199 http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=9139 http://www.keepassx.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1967&f=1 So hopefully this question will become a suitible resource for people when searching the web. Feel free to tell me if you think this should rather be a community wiki.

  • Ubuntu server: lost prompt on monitor

    - by Richard
Hello All, I am running Ubuntu 9.04 server edition. I have a monitor plugged into the box for occasional admin tasks. I pulled out a USB disk (without unmounting) and the screen is now full with this message: Buffer I/O error on device sdc1, logical block 7778778 I can't seem to clear the screen or get a prompt back. Doesn't appear to be registering keyboard strokes. The box is still running fine (I can ssh in from elsewhere and evrything is running as normal). Any ideas on how to clear screen and get my prompt back?

  • Lost sudo/su on Amazon EC2 instance

    - by barrycarter
I have an Amazon EC2 instance. I can login just fine, but neither "su" nor "sudo" work now (they worked fine previously): "su" requests a password, but I login using ssh keys, and I don't think the root user even has a password. "sudo <anything>" does this: sudo: /etc/sudoers is owned by uid 222, should be 0 sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting I probably did "chown ec2-user /etc/sudoers" (or, more likely "chown -R ec2-user /etc" because I was sick of rsync failing), so this is my fault. How do I recover? I stopped the instance and tried the "View/Change User Data" option on the AWS EC2 console, but this didn't help. EDIT: I realize I could kill this instance and create a new one, but was hoping to avoid something that extreme.

  • "ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host lost connection" when running cron job

    - by grautur
I have a Ruby script that connects to a remote machine via ssh and executes a command. The script runs fine when I just run it in my terminal. In my crontab, I have 1 * * * * /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb' and if I go ahead and run /bin/bash -l -c 'ruby myfile.rb', everything executes fine. But when cron itself executes the job, I get a ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host error. What's the cause of this? How do I fix it?

  • Network Interface Lost Functionality after Firewall Installation Hung

    - by Sadeq Dousti
I tried to install Agnitum Outpost firewall, but the setup hung while installing network drivers. Oddly, the NIC properties shows no connect string whatsoever, nor any services: http://pic-ups.com/images/1fjf.png Device Manager shows problematic drivers as well: www.pic-ups.com/images/2aqa.png Any suggestions? • Lost Root and other user passwords

    - by Webnet
This isn't a huge deal, because there's very little on the server (literally a file or two) that we actually need off of it. But we disabled root logins as a security measure and can't remember any of our other user passwords. I'm assuming that there's nothing we can do at this point to get into the server? I'm sitting next to the box... Update Oops... actually, I need to export an SVN off of this server. So yeah, there's stuff I need.

  • Mac Finder thumbnails on portable drives lost

    - by Dav
It's a small but annoying glitch I'm experiencing. A recent convert from Win so there may be some Finder preference I'm not aware of? Issue: 1. I plug my portable drive (500GB formatted as FAT32). 2. Browse to a movie folder in Finder - List mode. Finder slowly caches all the video thumbnails (well, except for ogg but that's normal :-) 3. I disconnect my portable drive. 4. Reconnect the drive and browse to the same folder. 5. All thumbnails are gone, Finder goes about recreating them. Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

  • DSL to web connectivity is often lost

    - by broiyan
I am experiencing a frequent web connectivity problem via a DSL modem. The problem usually shows up as a reload later screen inside of Google Chrome, as illustrated. My DSL service was fine for the first 2 months, but in the most recent month this problem has been occurring. I have this problem several times a day. A few weeks ago, I used to power cycle (off then on) the DSL modem but this usually did not solve the problem. However, in recent days, the power cycle does seem to fix the problem. When the problem occurs, the modem lights do not look unusual. All the lights are green or flashing green. This problem happens regardless of whether I am using ethernet or WiFi for the last few meters between the DSL modem and the computer. What is the likely cause? How can I help the phone company solve this? Their staff are not very effective at troubleshooting this.

  • TS connection lost but not local

    - by Owl
I have an office that is connected to a shared db server and terminal services server, that other offices use as well, through a vpn tunnel. For some reason all workstations in the office will lose connectivity to the remote address but will remain connected to their local internet. I have checked both firewalls to ensure all settings match accordingly. They seem to go down at routine times every day and it doesn't last longer than a minute or two. Any ideas of what this may be? • Lost support for Web Access on Verizon BlackBerry World Edition

    - by Jimsmithkka
Hello all, I believe that some silliness has occurred with my blackberry after a OS upgrade. I have 2010 Blackberry world edition phone, purchased off a friend who went iPhone, that at first worked with web on the Verizon network. When i connected it to my PC to transfer contacts, it prompted for an OS upgrade, which I performed. Post-Upgrade I have found that i can no longer access any of the web services: eg. AppWorld, Email, Twitter, Browser. And they all state that i need to upgrade my account to gain access. I had a Storm previous to this that worked fine, and at the VZ store they told me this device is no longer supported (new in 2010 though), and they got me a free "upgrade" to the Blackberry flip. What i could use help with is finding a source stating it is discontinued or a guide that will help me re-enable the web features. I can provide further info later if needed (currently at work with the flip, the WorldEdition is at home).

  • Cause of lost partition replaced by 2 Raw partitions

    - by DwightSampsonite
Hi, I had a curious problem over the weekend... My 500gb WD hard drive all of a sudden could not be discovered by xp, then when I plugged in again via USB it was being discovered as 2 separate Raw partitions that were asking to be formatted. I have never modified partitions on this drive before. I was scratching my head for about this for 20mins or so when my second 1TB external hard drive did the exact same thing(with the same sized raw partitions as the 500gb). I have since recovered the original partitions and data using Testdisk . I am more curious on the cause.... I suspect this could be a virus, however my machine hadn’t been online in a few days and AVG didn’t detect anything. Has anyone seen this before?

  • Lost Windows 7 boot after EasyBCD with EFI

    - by drent
I've got a Lenovo Y580 with a 64GB SSD and a 1TB HDD setup using GPT and setup to boot from (U?)EFI. I was trying to get my Linux Mint installation on the Windows boot manager using EasyBCD (I didn't realise EFI but it wiped my boot partition/loader and I cannot seem to get Windows back (and I still can't get a bootable Linux Mint). Using the System Recovery utility, Startup Repair can't "see" windows (it might be because I'm using a 7 Pro disk to recover Home Premium?). In command prompt, Bootrec tools don't do anything and bootsect can't run because it says that it's for BIOS only and I've booted with EFI. I can see the EFI data on the 200mb SSD partition using diskpart but I don't know how to add Windows back onto whatever bootloader I have/need. At the moment the only options I can see are: Do a fresh install of Windows and hope that the setup remains as fast as the default one (the SSD is some kind of cache for Windows but I can't quite see how it works given that the rest of the SSD is unpartitioned space). This seems like overkill given that Windows was working fine til EasyBCD deleted it. Try forcing BIOS mode and see if that somehow magically fixes things Try converting from GPT to MBR to try and use the bootrec/bootsect tools (and maybe back again) which seems like a really bad idea. Anyone have any ideas?

  • URGENT: help recovering lost data

    - by Niels Kristian
I have made a directory: sudo mkdir /ssd, the directory was supposed to be mounted to a raid array called md3. This was done by adding /dev/md3 /ssd auto defaults 0 0 to fstab. Then after a while where I had used the directory, I realized that I had forgotten to run sudo mount -a - and then I did, and now the data is gone. I tried to uncomment the line in fstab and run sudo mount -a but that didn't get back my data. What can I do!? CONTENT OF FSTAB: proc /proc proc defaults 0 0 none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0 /dev/md/0 none swap sw 0 0 /dev/md/1 /boot ext3 defaults 0 0 /dev/md/2 / ext4 defaults 0 0 /dev/md3 /ssd auto defaults 0 0

  • Lost current user (shutdown/logoff) widget after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04

    - by xyzman
I've upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10. Everything went fine until I've rebooted. After reboot, I've received some message about status panel and being sleepy, dismissed it. However, I haven't seen the user widget on Gnome Panel since that. This image shows which widget I'm talking about. If some one has any ideas about how it's called properly, please share. http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/8274/sampleyu.jpg Anyway, the question is, how do I turn this panel (and ability to shut my system down without resorting to console) back?

  • I lost /dev/md2 on my server

    - by sten
Hi, My 2 hard drives fried at the same moment apparently. My host company rebooted my server in rescue mode and I am trying to recover my data. They told me to mount /dev/sda2 to recover the data I need but, looking at a similar server that I have in pool, the data I'm looking for should be instead in /dev/md2. I can find /dev/md0 but not /dev/md2 (nor /dev/md1). I've looked on several places on the web and I could only find messages explaining how to create new partition. I just need to recover some data, not all of it and I'll be glad if anyone could help me to mount the /dev/md2 folder (or any other trick that would allow me to recover the data that was stored there). Thanks in advance, Sten

  • my partition has lost

    - by Mahmoud20070
The problem begins here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/118224/i-have-big-problem-with-mount-partition. I tried to solve the problem by myself, but I messed up. I opened gparted magic and opened my hard disk and chose Create Partition Table and the disaster was done. All the partitions on my hard disk (500 GB) have been removed. What can I do? I tried to use PTDD Partition Table Doctor 3.5, but it didn't help. This drive had important data that I need to get back.

  • Multi-monitor resolution and position settings lost after reboot

    - by SoftDeveloper
I've had two 1280x1024 monitors running for years on an nVidia 8800GT card with no problems. I've now replaced one monitor with a new 2560x1440 one. The card seems to support both fine, however every time I reboot the resolutions and monitor positions revert to the old settings. I've tried upgrading, downgrading, stripping out and reinstalling many versions of the nvidia drivers to no avail. Logging in as another user doesn't help - same problem. Booting into another another OS (Win7 64) works OK, so it is just this OS installation. During boot up everything looks fine (ie native 2450x1440 res) until the nVidia control panel or something is loaded which flips it back into the old mode. I have no old saved nvidia profiles. I can't find anything in the registry relating to these old settings. Its driving me crazy having to set resolutions and realign monitors on every reboot! Can anybody help?

  • User mapping lost after manual failover

    - by fordan
I have two Microsoft SQL Server instances set up for mirroring each with a number of databases. There are a number of logins and for each database one or more user/login mappings. When I restore a backup of database I always have to redo the login/user mappings. I understand this because the logins are per database server. So after restoring the databases on the pricipal I redid the login/user mappings. This was not possible for the mirror because the databases were 'restoring'. After a manual failover I could not use the databases because user credentials were missing. This was not unexpected, so I did the login/user mapping again. I did a manual failover again to make the initial pricipal, which was now the mirror, principal again. To my surprise I could not use the databases because the login/user mappings were gone. Is this the expected behaviour?

  • C# lost local variable window from debug (f11 step by step)

    - by Jane
I was running my code (visual studio 2010) and I accidentally closed the window that shows the state of variables step by step. I think it was called locals but I can't find it on any of the menu option. Would appreciate any help on this, I didn't realize how handy it was until now - The following link is what my local window looks like when selecting debug/start debugging/selecting breakpoints, which I'm don't find helpful. This is what my window used to look like: http://www.google.co.nz/imgresum=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1600&bih=761&tbm=isch&tbnid=Sa5AmVW5BxxakM:&imgrefurl=http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/79508/Mastering-Debugging-in-Visual-Studio-2010-A-Beginn&docid=4Iskh8P-E7oVSM&imgurl=http://www.codeproject.com/KB/cs/MasteringInDebugging/debug30_small.png&w=640&h=228&ei=TjKBUKGwKcXVsgauvIGYDQ&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1119&vpy=441&dur=1559&hovh=134&hovw=376&tx=219&ty=79&sig=104270260849502265426&page=1&tbnh=91&tbnw=256&start=0&ndsp=22&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:20,i:134 It's probably a mode/option within debugging I need to select but I can't figure out how to get it back to the nice and simple variable state display..

  • Cursor and selection invisible if focus is lost

    - by Alois Mahdal
"Latest" versions of Excel (I think it's since 2007) have a new added "feature" that if Excel windows loses focus, the cursor becomes invisible. Also coloring of headers is default, so it's impossible to locate cursor and/or selection as soon as I switch to other window. This annoys the hell out of me as it makes Excel almost unusable for most of tasks I need it for: keeping track of test cases while performing testing in another window. obtaining data somewhere else and porting it to Excel (I have never seen such behavior in other applications and can't even think of a justification for it.) Is is possible to turn this behavior off?

  • All MySQL Databases lost overnight

    - by Iain
After a call from a customer to say that his website is down, I find that MySQL on our RackSpace Cloud Windows 2008 server was not running. I restarted MySQL but got the 'Access denied for user' error in the browser for all websites with MySQL database. When I look in MySql Server 5.5/data there are no folders other than mysql and performance_schema. It appears all the databases and data have been wiped. Does anyone know what might have happened and where the data has gone? To top that I just found this server is missing from our backup service. ps appears to be after windows update at 4:01 this morning.
