• Finding and marking the largest of three values in a two dimensional array

  I am working on a display screen for our office, and I can't seem to think of a good way to find the largest numerical value in a set of data in a two dimensional array. I've looked at using max() and also asort() but they don't seem to cope with a two dimensional array. I'm returning my data through our mysql class, so the rows are returned in a two dimensional array. Array( [0] => Array( [am] => 12, [sales] => 981), [1] => Array( [am] => 43, [sales] => 1012), [2] => Array( [am] => 17, [sales] => 876) ) I need to output a class when foreaching the data in my table for the AM with the highest sales value. Short of comparing them all in if statements. I have tried to get max() on the array, but it returns an array, as it's look within the dimension. When pointing it at a specific dimension it returns the key not the value. I figured that I could asort() the array and pop the top value off, store it in a variable and then compare against that in my foreach() loop, but that seems to have trouble sorting across two dimensions. Lastly, I figured that I could foreach() the values, comparing them against the previous one each time, untill I found the largest. This approach however means storing every value, luckily only three, but then comparing against them all again. Surely there must be a simpler way to achieve this, short of converting it into a single dimension array, then doing an asort() on that?

• How can I change jtable height at runtime

  I hava a JFrame with multiple JPanels of similar width aligned one below other. I use one of these JPanels to display a JTable which is the last JPanel of the lot. This JPanel has a JScrollpane as a child component. This is where I try to add my table dynamically. Initial height of this JScrollpane is set to 40. I designed above template using Netbeans 6.8 Now I'm trying to add the table to the JPanel. When a button is pressed below code snippet is called. The class which includes this code extends javax.swing.JFrame class. I am expecting below code would adjust table height according to the row count and display the table. • Don’t be a dinosaur. Use Calendar Tree!

  If one spends long enough in my company one will likely eventually have to listen to me bark on about subscribable calendars. I was banging on about them way back in 2009, I’ve cajoled SQLBits into providing one, provided one myself for the World Cup, and opined that they could be transformative for the delivery of BI. I believe subscribable calendars can change the world but have never been good at elucidating why I thought so, for that reason I always direct people to read a blog by Scott Adams (yes, the guy who draws Dilbert) entitled Calendar as Filter. In that blog post Scott writes: I think the family calendar is the organizing principle into which all external information should flow. I want the kids' school schedules for sports and plays and even lunch choices to automatically flow into the home calendar. Everything you do has a time dimension. If you are looking for a new home, the open houses are on certain dates, and certain houses that fit your needs are open at certain times. If you are shopping for some particular good, you often need to know the store hours. Your calendar needs to know your shopping list and preferences so it can suggest good times to do certain things I think the biggest software revolution of the future is that the calendar will be the organizing filter for most of the information flowing into your life. You think you are bombarded with too much information every day, but in reality it is just the timing of the information that is wrong. Once the calendar becomes the organizing paradigm and filter, it won't seem as if there is so much. I wholly agree and hence was delighted to discover (via the Hanselminutes podcast) that Scott has a startup called CalendarTree.com whose raison d’etre is to solve this very problem. What better way to describe a Scott Adams startup than with a Scott Adams comic: I implore you to check out Calendar Tree and make the world a tiny bit better by using it to share any information that has a time dimension to it. • Building a Data Warehouse

  I've seen tutorials articles and posts on how to build datawarehouses with star and snowflakes schemas, denormalization of OLTP databases fact and dimension tables and so on. Also seen comments like: Star schemas are for datamarts, at best. There is absolutely no way a true enterprise data warehouse could be represented in a star schema, or snowflake either. I want to create a database that will server for reporting services and maybe (if that isn't enough) install analisys services and extract reports and data from cubes. My question was : Is it really necesarry to redesign my current database and follow the star/snowflake schemas with fact and dimension tables ? Thank you

• .desktop shortcuts aren't working for java applications in LXDE

  I just installed minecraft on my LXDE desktop/Lubuntu machine and I'm trying to create a .desktop file on the desktop that executes java -jar ~/minecraftlauncher.jar. The command works in bash scripts and the terminal but refuses to work when I click on my .DESKTOP shortcut which is suppose to execute the same command. I've experimented with other jars and they can't seem to start too. Here is my xsession log: ** (pcmanfm:1572): DEBUG: launch command: <java -jar ~/Downloads/minecraft_server.jar> ** (pcmanfm:1572): DEBUG: sn_id = pcmanfm-1572-administrator-Dimension-3000-java-14_TIME14031891 Unable to access jarfile ~/Downloads/minecraft_server.jar ** (pcmanfm:1572): DEBUG: launch command: <java -jar ~/minecraftlauncher.jar> ** (pcmanfm:1572): DEBUG: sn_id = pcmanfm-1572-administrator-Dimension-3000-java-15_TIME14070158 Unable to access jarfile ~/minecraftlauncher.jar UPDATE: Whoops, it seems to work when I give an absolute path. I guess the home path is something else. UPDATE: I guess X doesn't resolve the home specifier. I ran a .desktop file that executed a script that outputs the current directory, and it seems to be correct.

• Java enum pairs / "subenum" or what exactly?

  I have an RPG-style Item class and I stored the type of the item in enum (itemType.sword). I want to store subtype too (itemSubtype.long), but I want to express the relation between two data type (sword can be long, short etc. but shield can't be long or short, only round, tower etc). I know this is wrong source code but similar what I want: enum type { sword; } //not valid code! enum swordSubtype extends type.sword { short, long } Question: How can I define this connection between two data type (or more exactly: two value of the data types), what is the most simple and standard way? Array-like data with all valid (itemType,itemSubtype) enum pairs or (itemType,itemSubtype[]) so more subtype for one type, it would be the best. OK but how can I construct this simplest way? Special enum with "subenum" set or second level enum or anything else if it does exists 2 dimensional "canBePairs" array, itemType and itemSubtype dimensions with all type and subtype and boolean elements, "true" means itemType (first dimension) and itemSubtype (second dimension) are okay, "false" means not okay Other better idea Thank you very much!

• 12.04 Taking forever for no apparent reason

  First off, I'd just like to say how much I'm loving Ubuntu so far. It's one of my first steps into Linux, but so far it's blown away Windows in almost every regard. Now, onto my problem. My brothers have some old Dell Dimensions that are barely clinging to life. They were both running XP Home Premium. The 2400 installed just fine, no issues at all. Now, the other computer, the 3000 isn't clearing the screen with the Ubuntu logo and the pulsing dots. I've tried multiple discs, including the exact same one that gave me no issue in the other computer, and I'm at a loss. Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the problem might lay? They're both 32 bit Intel processors, and it's the correct version of Ubuntu. Is it a bad disc drive? Hardware incompatibility? Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.   I am using Talend to populate a data warehouse. My job is writing customer data to a dimension table and transaction data to the fact table. The surrogate key (p_key) on the fact table is auto-incrementing. When I insert a new customer, I need my fact table to reflect the id of the related customer. As I mentioned my p_key is auto auto_incrementing so I can't just insert an arbitrary value for the p_key. Any thought on how I can insert a row into my dimension table and still retrieve the primary key to reference in my fact record? Thanks.

From that map object i am able to retrieve the Grid and every item in the grid along with other getters and setters. • Multidimensional vectors in scheme?

  I earlier asked a question about arrays in scheme (turns out they're called vectors but are basically otherwise the same as you'd expect). Is there an easy way to do multidimensional arrays vectors in PLT Scheme though? For my purposes I'd like to have a procedure called make-multid-vector or something. By the way if this doesn't already exist, I don't need a full code example of how to implement it. If I have to roll this myself I'd appreciate some general direction though. The way I'd probably do it is to just iterate through each element of the currently highest dimension of the vector to add another dimension, but I can see that being a bit ugly using scheme's recursive setup. Also, this seems like something I should have been able to find myself so please know that I did actually google it and nothing came up.

  I can create function pointers in Fortran 90, with code like real, external :: f and then use f as an argument to another function/subroutine. But what if I want an array of function pointers? In C I would just do double (*f[])(int); to create an array of functions returning double and taking an integer argument. I tried the most obvious, real, external, dimension(3) :: f but gfortran doesn't let me mix EXTERNAL and DIMENSION. Is there any way to do what I want? (The context for this is a program for solving a system of differential equations, so I could input the equations without having a million parameters in my subroutines.)

  I am trying to implement position-sensitive zooming inside a JScrollPane. The JScrollPane contains a component with a customized 'paint' that will draw itself inside whatever space it is allocated - so zooming is as easy as using a MouseWheelListener that resizes the inner component as required. But I also want zooming into (or out of) a point to keep that point as central as possible within the resulting zoomed-in (or -out) view (this is what I refer to as 'position-sensitive' zooming), similar to how zooming works in google maps. I am sure this has been done many times before - does anybody know the "right" way to do it under Java Swing?. Would it be better to play with Graphic2D's transformations instead of using JScrollPanes? • Storing i18n data in a database using XML

  Hello, I may have to store some i18n-ed data in my database using XML if I don't fight back. That's not my choice, but it's in the specifications I have to follow. We would have, by example, something like following in a 'Country' column: <lang='fr'>Etats-Unis</lang> <lang='en'>United States</lang> This would apply to many columns in the database. I don't think it's a good idea at all. I tend to think that a cell in a database should represent a single piece of data (better for look-up), and that the database should have two dimensions maximum and not 3 or more (one request more would be required per dimension / a dimension here would be equal to the number of XML attributes). My idea was to have a separate table for all the translations, with columns such as : ID / Language / Translation. However, I should admit that I'm really not sure what is the best way to store data in various languages in a DB... Thanks for your advices :)

There is a limited number of combinations (some thousands), so I want to re-use group keys from the bridge table to to limit the size. • multidimensional vector rotation and angle computation -- how?

  Input: two multidimensional (for example dim=8) vectors a and b. I need to find out the "directed" angle (0-2*Pi, not 0-Pi) between those vectors a and b. And if they are not parallel I need to rotate vector b in plane a,b by "directed" angle L. If they are parallel, plane does not matter, but angle of rotation is still the same L. For 2d and 3d this is quite easy, but for more dimensions I am lost, I didn't find anything on google, and I prefer using some already proved&tested equations (avoiding errors introduced by my calculations :-D).
