  • Win 7 dual monitor: Don't move application windows when turn off second monitor

    The title is correct, it should say "Don't" not "Doesn't". I Don't want the application windows to be moved to the main monitor when I turn off the monitors. On my Win XP dual monitor system, I can turn off the monitors and when I turn them back on, the application windows are in the same locations on the same monitors as when I turned the monitors off. On the Win 7 system, every time I turn off the monitors (or just the second monitor), all of the application windows are moved to the "main" monitor. After experimenting with the settings, I've found one process that enables me to turn off the monitors and still keep my application windows laid out in my chosen locations on the two monitors: 1) Switch the display setting to a single monitor. 2) Turn off the monitors. 3) Turn on the monitors. 4) Switch the display setting back to "Extend these Displays". After step 4, the application windows that I had laid out on the second monitor are moved back to their original locations on the second monitor. Is there a windows or nVidia setting that would leave the application windows on the second monitor so that I don't need to switch the display settings every time I turn off the monitors?   • Double Layer DVD+R burning problem - I/O Error

    I have a modern PC (Quad Core CPU, 4 GB RAM, Win7 Home Premium 64-bit) but I have a problem with burning .dvd images to Double Layer (8.5 GB) DVDs. I wasted too many DVD+R DL discs but to no avail. Here is a short explanation of what I did: I'm using ImgBurn v2.5.0.0 (latest version). I'm trying to burn an image file (.dvd) which is together with the related .iso file in the same folder. In ImgBurn, I select the file with .dvd extension, and set writing speed to 2.4x. Burning process starts normally, but around 7% of the process, it gives a I/O Write Error, which is as follows: I wasted 3 discs (Magic, Made in Taiwan, DVD+R DL, 8.5 GB) trying the same thing. My DVD writer is LG GH22NP20 with IDE connection type. I updated its firmware from 1.04 to 2.00 but no success in burning again. Then my cousin brought his LG (an older model) which, he claims, was successful in writing DL discs with the same brand (Magic). I plugged off my LG and plugged the older one in, and tried to burn the image again. It also gave an I/O Error even without standing till 7%. I tried another burning program (CloneCD), but failed again. Then I bought other brands (TDK and VERBATIM) and tried to burn the image. Burning process started successfully, but around 14% (for Verbatim) and 25% (for TDK) failed again. Here is a screeny from ImgBurn: I've burned lots of 4.7 GB DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs successfully, even without a single error, with this LG DVD writer, but this case is very bothering for me. What should I do? Should I buy a new DVD writer other than LG? Could this be related to Windows or my hardware configuration? Thanks for your help. Edit: My burner works on my cousin's machine. So the problem must be related to my system. What could be the reason? Latest news: I borrowed an external USB DVD writer from a friend, which is PHILIPS SPD3000CC (an old model). Guess what! It's burning DVD+R DLs successfully! How come an internal DVD writer of a brand new computer system cannot burn DL DVDs? Now I'm considering buying a new internal DVD writer with not IDE, but SATA connection...

  • ASP.NET MVC2 Data Access Layer

    For a small/medium sized project I'm trying to figure out what is the 'ideal' way to have a domain layer and data access layer. My opinions on coupling tend to be more towards the view that the domain models should not be tightly coupled with the database layer, in other words the data access layer shouldn't actually know anything about the domain objects. I've been looking at Linq-to-sql and it wants to use its own models that it creates, and so it ends up VERY tightly coupled. Whilst I love the way you use linq-to-sql in code I really don't like the way it wants to make its own domain objects. What are some alternatives that I should consider? I tried use NHibernate but I did not like the way I had to use to query and get different objects. I honestly love the syntax and way you use linq, I just don't want it to be so tightly coupled to domain objects.

  • Can I have a computer with 2 physical HDs, & Dual boot option, one for Windows & one for Ubuntu

    When my HD failed in my old computer with a dual core, I immediately went out and bought a new 6 core PC because I needed it for business and had to have an immediate solution. The old computer was otherwise a good computer. I don't want to spend a $100+ for a new operating system for the old computer because the Windows 7 Professional opperating system for the new computer will only allow one install. So, I decided to look and see if there were any free operating systems and found Ubuntu. I downloaded it and burned a live CD and would like to try it on the old computer. I found a 200 GB HD I can buy for $30 and the seller will format it any way I want. There are also other HDs available at a similar price. What I was thinking I would like to do is buy 2 HDs. Then I can have one formatted for Ubuntu 12.04 and install Windows XP Pro SP1 on the other HD for which I have the original installation CD. Then I would like to have a dual boot option so that when I power up the computer, I can choose whether to use Windows XP or Ubuntu. Is this possible? If so, how would I do it, that is, arrange it so a dual boot option presents itself on power up.

  • Overlapping dual monitors

    I have dual monitor setup and I was wondering if there's a way to specifiy an overlap between the 2 displays. Ideally, the area where the 2 monitors cross over would be repeated on both monitors (ven diagram-ish). Currently the display settings can only work when they're adjacent. On a side note, is it possible to seperate the monitors so that there's an assumed space between the displays? I'm currently running windows 7.

  • Suggestions for sharing and using data between Ubuntu and Windows 7 dual boot

    Note: TL;DR, scroll to bottom for summary. I recently set up my computer for a dual boot between Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. My current drive setup is as follows. | A1 | A2 | | B1 | B2 | B3 | A1: 100 mb, windows 7 "System Reserved" boot partition A2: 230 gb, data section, this one needs to be shared between the operating systems B1: 125 gb, windows 7 OS B2: 123 gb, ubuntu OS B3: 2gb, linux swap space Pretty much i want to have my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc accessible from both operating systems. My first attempt involved making the data (a2) partition NTFS, and moving my home folder from ubuntu to the data partition. However, as I read NTFS does not work nice with permission, and it messed up my home folder. My next idea is one of the following: 1) format the data partition to ext2/3/4 and move my home folder from linux there, and get a driver to read ext partitions in windows 7. The problem with that is that most of the ext drivers/software are not compatible with windows 7 or do not integrate with windows explorer (I really don't want to open a separate software window just to access my data, plus it's probably not compatible with other software.) http://www.fs-driver.org/ looks promising, but I'm not sure how it works with ext4 and windows 7 (not officially supported, when trying in vista compatibility mode, it tells me I need to format the ext drive to use it). My next idea, 2) keep the home folder in ubuntu where it is, but create symlinks for the Documents, Music, etc folders to an NTFS formatted Data (A2) partition, and add those locations to the windows 7 libraries. I'm not totally sure how the permissions would work out, but it should be fine since it's only the documents, music, etc and not the important config files in the rest of /home/user/. Correct me if I'm wrong. Currently, symlinks is my best idea, although i'm not sure how it will work. Any suggestions, additions to my ideas, links, pointers, whatever would be greatly appreciated. Even if it means i should reformat both my drives and repartition (2 250gb drives if you want to suggest a setup for that), I won't be too opposed if that's the best suggestion (I've gone through the format/install/format/reinstall process 5 times over the past 3 days, once more won't hurt me). TL;DR, summary: I have two hard drives. One is partitioned for Ubuntu and Windows 7, the second one I want accessible to both operating systems to store documents, music, pictures, videos, etc. Suggestions on how to set up the data drive please =) P.S. bonus if I can get an apache server document root folder working between the two OS's as well (permissions could become very complicated, so don't worry too much about that) P.P.S. I need to make disk partitions used by Windows smaller to make room for Linux. What is easiest way to upgrade? Should I resize Vista partition first to make room for linux installation, or should I upgrade first to Windows 7 and resize partitions after upgrade.

I would like to have a dual boot that, if nothing was pressed, the Windows XP would start automatically. I have read about Grub but got the impression that it wasn't possible to default the operating system to start to something other than Ubuntu. Thanks.

  • jQuery, jQuery UI, and Dual Licensed Plugins (Dual Licensing)

    OK I have read many posts regarding Dual Licensing using MIT and GPL licenses. But Im curious still, as the wording seems to be inclusive. Many of the Dual Licenses state that the software is licensed using "MIT AND GPL". The "AND" is what confuses me. It seems to me that the word "AND" in the terms, means you will be licensing the product using both licenses. Most of the posts, here on stackoverflow, state that you can license the software using one "OR" the other. JQuery specifically states "OR", whereas JQuery UI specifically States "AND". Another Instance of the "AND" would be JQGrid. Im not a lawyer but, it seems to me that a legal interpretation of this would state that use of the software would mean that your using the software under both licenses. Has anyone who has contacted a lawyer gotten clarification or a definitive answer as to what is true? Can you use Dual licensed software products that state "AND" in the terms of agreement under either license? EDITED: Guys here is specifically what Im talking about on jquery.org/license you see the following stated: You may use any jQuery project under the terms of either the MIT License or the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 2 but in the header of Jquery's and Jquery UI library you see this: * Dual licensed under the MIT and GPL licenses. * http://docs.jquery.com/License The site says MIT or GPL but the license statement in the software says MIT and GPL.

    I have a business layer that has DTOs that are used in the presentation layer. This application uses entity framework. OrganizationId { get; set; } } In the BLL I want to have a method that returns a list of DTO. I would like to know which is the better approach: returning IQueryable or list of DTOs. Although I feel that returning IQueryable is not a good idea because the connection needs to be open.   • calling a service layer method to my presentation layer

    Ok I feel really dumb asking this but I seem to be missing something really simple here. I have the following code in a class in my service layer - public Items getItems(String category, float amount, String color, String type) The code reads from a database and returns the results - I plan on placing it in a jframe. Nice and simple. But no matter how I call it from the jframe I get errors in eclipse that the code is wrong - either that their are illegal modifiers or such. So obviously I am calling it completely wrong, so my stupid question is how do you call that method into a jframe? For example - if I try to call it this way: public Items getItems(); I get told that getItems is an illegal parameter. If I call this.. Items getItems(); I am told its undefined

  • dual boot xp/xp, now win7/xp getting no xp

    I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" XP with Office etc. (Unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice) Normally I would be presented with two WinXPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal installation on disk 1 (C).Selecting the first in boot order would give me D: (disk 2) withe barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added WinXP disk D:. The options now show show up, but seletcing Win XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started. Any help would be much appreciated

  • Switch smarthosts in Exchange when using dual WAN

    Hi everybody, I'd like to know if it's possible to setup Exchange 2003/2007 to switch between smarthosts, based on the WAN connection currently in use. Example scenario: I have two WAN connections with different ISP's. Exchange is running behind a dual WAN router. The router is setup to fall back to secondary WAN when primary WAN fails. The smarthost set in Exchange is the SMTP server of the primary ISP. Because the smarthost set in Exchange only allows relaying from IP's of the primary WAN sending mail won't work when the router falls back to the secondary WAN. Sending mail directly through DNS MX lookup is an option but the ISP's have dynamic IP's that get blacklisted a lot. Thanks in advance!
