  • A proper file monitoring tool for Windows with notifications

    Developing in PHP, I'm usually confronted with various log files: apache, web apps, error logs etc. I'm currently using Notepad++ with the option to notify me when a file has changed. But when I need to monitor many files, I end up with too many tabs opened. I've used some of these, but they were lacking some basic stuff (like double clicking on the file to open it; oh, c'mon). What do you guys use for monitoring file changes? I needn't be "modern" or fancy. Just a simple "Hey, this file was changed. Here, click on it to open". (Maybe I'll end up making one myself, but I need to learn some more Java).

  • Ubuntu on low powered laptop

    First off, I am new to Ubuntu. I come from a Windows background (DOS before that) and am loving it so far. I installed it on an older Dell laptop that I wanted to get another year out of. I set this machine up primarily as a LAMP development machine for a project I am working on. The machine is a Vostro 1500 and it has 4GB RAM (maxed) and an upgraded hard drive. I can't watch YouTube videos for long before it starts to overheat and start acting sporadic. I can live without YouTube but every so often the application switching (alt-tab) gets slower and begins not showing all applications and the Dash home quits displaying properly. I am sure I am asking a lot of this old machine. What I really want to know is: are there any settings in Ubuntu that allow me to lower the graphic effects (fade-ins, transparencies, fancy transitions, etc) that would be less taxing on the video card?

  • Compiz cube issues since upgrading to 12.10. The caps and 3d windows are all over the place.

    I think it's due to residual settings from the old reflection and deformation plug in. I've attempted a complete reset of the settings and still no go though. The cube caps stay black and glitch out when I spin it etc and I see multiple copies of each window. It's like it's trying to display the "inside the cube" setting and the regular just floating 3d window at the same time. Here's one example (rep isn't high enough yet for fancy img imbed, sorry) http://i.stack.imgur.com/rrbBd.jpg Any ideas? I'm trying this on my desktop which is using an NVIDIA 8800 GTS card. I also tried it on an older laptop that uses an intel card and same deal. I think maybe I can use the dconftool and try to see if there are still settings from the deformation and reflection plug in causing this. Unless someone knows how to get that back (either a beta or an old version) somehow?

  • Recommendations for taskbar

    I recently updated to Ubuntu 13.10 and now tint2 stopped working. Better yet: it works, I just can not see it as the all bar is now transparent. Since Tint2 is no longer maintained I doubt it will be updated hence I'm now looking into alternative is there are any. In short: looking for a simple taskbar that sits at the bottom of the screen and that lists applications per window (no groupping!). Don't need fancy animations or widgets/features. Any ideas?

    I am not sure whether I post my question in right place. I am a master student in computer science and I will graduate next year.Recently, I failed in an interview. Because (at least I think) the interviewer did not think my background strong enough although I finished 5 courses projects and currently working on other 2 projects in graduate school. It seems that nowadays, recruiters like these candidates who finish some projects out of school/work. So I wanna enrich my background. So, I hope you guys recommend some java/C++ projects to me, which I can finish in two or three months. And it would be better if concurrency programming or other fancy skills are needed.

    Say a website on my localhost takes about 3 seconds to do each request. This is fine, and as expected (as it is doing some fancy networking behind the scenes). However, if i open the same url in tabs (in firefox), then reload them all at the same time, it appears to load each page sequentially rather than all at the same time. What is this all about?     I have text that has these fancy double quotes: '“' and I would like to replace them with regular double quotes using Ruby gsub and regex. Here's an example and what I have so far: sentence = 'This is a quote, “Hey guys!”' I couldn't figure out how to escape double quotes so I tried using 34.chr: sentence.gsub("“",34.chr). This gets me close but leaves a back slash in front of the double quote: sentence.gsub("“",34.chr) => 'This is a quote, \"Hey guys!”'

    Using Qt’s Webkit implementation renders much slower than directly implementing the Webkit engine -- is this true or just a myth? From my own experience, I found the load time of a complex page about twice as long in Qt’s “Fancy Browser” example as it does in Google Chrome (which also incorporates a port of Webkit), but I hardly think that is a fair comparison. Any insights on this?

    My question is: since Visual Studio 2010 was only just released, why does it not render pages in the same way as the latest Microsoft web browser, IE8?     Hi, does anyone know of a very simple SQL Server client tool - that does the same basic functions as Management Studio (i.e. choose a database and run a query - doesn't need an Object Explorer, or anything fancy)? For this, I have added a stopwatch which starts at the service call start and stops at service call stop. Now I have a custom counter which user AverageTimer32 to log the stopwatch values to Perfmon. It seems that everyone is using TortoiseSVN nowadays, which unfortunately doesn't install without administrator access. Is there any way around it or another client I can try?     I look at ads and the jobs seem to overlap. A lot of software engineer jobs even say CS or related degree so it doesn't seem like a degree in CS = software engineer. It seems like a programmer or developer with experience can transition to the role or become an "engineer". Or is the engineer just the same job with a fancy name... Is there really a difference or is it just HR throwing names around?

  • installing Python application with Python under windows

    My application uses many Python libraries (Django, Twisted, xmlrpc). I cannot expect that the end user has the Python installed with all needed libraries. I've created a fancy installer for my application using Inno Setup, but I don't think that it is a good solution to execute 5 other setup programs from my installer. It would be annoying to the user to click "Next" button 15 times. Is there any way to do that quietly?
