  • What is your favorite new feature in php 5.3?

    I'm trying to compile a list of new features found in php 5.3. that I have to check out as time permits. I'd like to do this in the order of usefulness of the features. The question is subjective, that is the point. I want to end up with a list ordered by what the community likes. Such a list would hopefully be useful to many and the I have not been able to find one on SO. Please name one specific feature per answer, thanks in advance!   • What is the Your Favorite Managed Anti-Virus for a Small Workgroup (under 25 Machines)? [closed]

    I am a solo IT employee for a small company that has a couple of servers and 10 workstations (Windows and Mac, Macs do not run AV software). I want to centrally manage Anti-Virus for all the computers with some sort of control panel. I have been using Symantec Corporate versions for years, but the latest version (Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.x) is totally over-complicated, and aimed at enterprises with 1000s of computers. Can anyone recommend something reliable, centrally managed, and simple?

  • Why are my favorite websites becoming slower, over months?

    I spend a lot of my time at sites for watching online videos: youtube, gorillavid, thedailyshow.com etc. I used to watch the videos in full screen mode, and then that became very laggy. So, I started watching them with full-browser zooming. Then that became laggy. Recently, I've had to actually zoom out; otherwise, the video will lag so much that my PC locks. Could this be a symptom of my processor, RAM, or motherboard going bad? Has it, perhaps, anything to do with softwares like Chrome or the playeres the sites are using being updated?

    Originally started here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2650181/django-in-query-as-a-string-result-invalid-literal-for-int-with-base-10 I have a number of apps within my site, currently working with a simple "Blog" app. I have developed a 'Favorite' app, easily enough, that leverages the ContentType framework in Django to allow me to have a 'favorite' of any type... trying to go the other way, however, I don't know what I'm doing, and can't find any examples for. I'll start off with the favorite model: favorite/models.py from django.db import models from django.contrib.contenttypes.models import ContentType from django.contrib.contenttypes import generic from django.contrib.auth.models import User class Favorite(models.Model): content_type = models.ForeignKey(ContentType) object_id = models.PositiveIntegerField() user = models.ForeignKey(User) content_object = generic.GenericForeignKey() class Admin: list_display = ('key', 'id', 'user') class Meta: unique_together = ("content_type", "object_id", "user") Now, that allows me to loop through the favorites (on a user's "favorites" page, for example) and get the associated blog objects via {{ favorite.content_object.title }}. What I want now, and can't figure out, is what I need to do to the blog model to allow me to have some tether to the favorite (so when it is displayed in a list it can be highlighted, for example).   • problem using 'as_json' in my model and 'render :json' => in my controller (rails)

    Hi everyone. I am trying to create a unique json data structure, and I have run into a problem that I can't seem to figure out. In my controller, I am doing: favorite_ids = Favorites.all.map(&:photo_id) data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.to_json, :photos => Photo.all.to_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } render :json => data and in my model: def as_json(options = {}) { :name => self.name, :favorite => options[:favorite].is_a?(Proc) ? options[:favorite].call(self) : options[:favorite] } end The problem is, rails encodes the values of 'photos' & 'albums' (in my data hash) as JSON twice, and this breaks everything... The only way I could get this to work is if I call 'as_json' instead of 'to_json': data = { :albums => PhotoAlbum.all.as_json, :photos => Photo.all.as_json(:favorite => lambda {|photo| favorite_ids.include?(photo.id)}) } However, when I do this, my :favorite = lambda option no longer makes it into the model's as_json method.......... So, I either need a way to tell 'render :json' not to encode the values of the hash so I can use 'to_json' on the values myself, or I need a way to get the parameters passed into 'as_json' to actually show up there....... I hope someone here can help... Thanks!

    I've read somewhere that ergonomic problems accounts for 70% of injury... And i don't want to be one of those guys who think, ahh it's just a slight sore, and go on and discover that i have CTS and have to operate on my hands!!! So are the any good ergo habits that you follow religiously each day? Or some cool tools that would send any ergo issue to a cold hell and force it to stay there. So we can program hopefully until we're old and wicked.

Some of the things I or others do in this time include: Reading the news Thinking of ways to advance the project Looking at other projects Throwing darts Checking the unanswered list on stackoverflow.com Build times aren't constant making it hard to plan constructive use of them. I would like to hear of a method in use to make beneficial use of those few minutes that can add up to a few hours.

We, however, do not have good conventions for organizing ASP.NET ascx's and aspx's. We have already reviewed DotNetNuke and want to avoid the complexity of driving the whole application through a single default.aspx . What is the best way to organize a non-MVC ASP.NET solution?     I think Stackoverflow is a great resource for programmers, but a lot of times free discussion and experimentation help find answers as quickly. I personally used Slicehost's forums a lot for setting up a Linux as a server. A quick search on Google turns up many results, but how to guess where to find the right people? In essence, are there communities out there where one can discuss and collaborate with great people similar to Stackoverflow audience? I am interested in multitude of topics, from PHP/ASP/Perl to C++/C#/Python, from SQL/XML/HTML/JSON to Javascript/Flash/Silverlight.

How long does it take your implementation to return a 25 digit sequence? How about 100?

  • What's Your favorite f# use? where does f# makes life (a lot) easier (compared to c#)?

    I've skimmed the stack and did not get the overflow as there is probably no such question. I'm just learning f# and I am A seasoned c# and .net dev. I am into financial apps and currently F# helps me a lot with maths calcs like zero finding or minimum finding (although I still want some good maths library there). I see that processing multiple items (files or smth) tends to be easier, but my GUI (web, win) are still c# based. I am in the team of 5 devs and we know that the new tool is out, we are learning it after hours (to pimp ourselves up) but maybe we shouldn't bash the door somebody already opened. So in business apps, whats Your first killer part of soft You would code in F# (if You could and would know IT would be easier, faster, more testable, easier to maintain etc.? Business rules? ImageProcessing? Data processing? hope it's not to subjective. luke

    I've noticed this culture surrounding Ruby where developers truly believe that they are somehow more gifted than developers of other languages, regardless of experience and talent (even when that isn't the case, I've met some extremely junior Ruby developers come up with some pretty basic constructs, and pass them off as some sort of revolutionary idea). The derision of strongly typed languages seems to be a common theme as well; regardless of its merits. Is there something particular to the Ruby syntax in general that is to account for this? Is there a sociological component to it?

  • What is your favorite colorscheme FOR PROGRAMMING in Vim?

    I think this is a relevant question for programmers and I'd like to hear other people's answers because some syntax highlighting color schemes are better on the eyes than others. This can affect productivity as much as ergonomic keyboards or anything else on here. It's about comfort and productivity. So, I'm curious. Do you find some color schemes better adapted for some languages over others? At the other end of the spectrum, I think coding without syntax highlight is awful and slow going.
