• iPhone SDK File Handler with iOS 4 Background Processes

  The "application:applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions:" message does not get called when an application is sitting in the background in iOS 4, and I'm trying to figure out how to be notified when the application is brought back into the foreground by another application. My application registers itself as a handler for certain file types, and Safari and other supported applications allow passing the files over to my app. This works great if the app is closed before I try to use it, but fails otherwise. In my application:applicationDidFinishLaunchingWithOptions: I have: NSURL *url = (NSURL *)[launchOptions valueForKey:UIApplicationLaunchOptionsURLKey]; if([url isFileURL]) { } [self.window makeKeyAndVisible]; return YES; As stated already, this works great so far for starting the app when it's not sitting in the background - but when I switch back over to Safari or Mail and try to open a new file that is supported, my application wakes up from the background and becomes active again but I can't see any "withOptions" overrides for application:applicationWillEnterForeground: or any way to identify what was passed in when it enters the foreground. What would be the appropriate way to receive these "open file notifications" when the application is in the background?

• Rendering ListBox takes too long on Windows Phone

  I am working on a Windows Phone 7 Application using Local SQLite Database and I'm having an issue with the rendering time of pages that use DataBinding. Currently it takes 60-70ms to retrieve the data from the database. Then it takes about 3100ms to render the data retrieved using a ListBox with DataBinding. Then, the database loads data into a CSList (using ViciCoolStorage) and that gets Binded to the ListBox: StationList.ItemsSource = App.RouteViewModel.RouteStops; Comment: I have tried to add the elements of the CSList to an ObservableCollection and bind that to the interface but didn't seem to change anything. Question: Am I doing something wrong that results in a huge load time - even if just loading 10 elements -, or this is normal? • Virtual terminal with at least 16bit color?

  It's 2013 and there should be terminals with more than 256 colors by now (you'd think). Are there any terminals with more than 8bit colors (usually from 8 bit we jump to 16bit) to use with linux? Ideally, I'd like to have a linux terminal with 32bit colors for the foreground and background of each character. So, the functionality would be the same, with escape sequences, but just more of them (or something like that?).

  Hey guy, I know that you can start a background job with Bash doing foo &. However, the best way I know to put a foreground job to the background is to do Ctrl+z to pause it then bg 1 to resume it in the background. Is there a faster way? Some Ctrl+Something key combination I'm not aware of? Thanks!

  I was curious and confused that what exactly is the behaviour of CTRl+Z. I know, If a process in running in foreground, and we press ctrl+z, it goes to background. But what exactly happens. Does it keep doing it's job, or does it get suspended, and stopped at the point where it was. Can someone please explain. • A linux tftpd server that can log the incoming requests to stdout/stderr

  I find it crazy that this doesn't work out of the box, but neither atftpd nor tftpd-hpa seem to have any way to log to the console. I've run them in the foreground with verbosity right up but clearly that's not the right magic incantation. I'm running a short-lived server for a firmware upload and I want to see the requests (and ideally when they've completed).

  I have a Windows 7 computer which have a strange behavior: when preview is enabled in explorer, I double-click on any Word document, Word is launched, the document is loaded, and immediatly explorer is in the foreground window (so Word is in the background). The whole process take less than one second. Only with Word. Not Excel or anything. Only on one computer (5 others are identical and installed the same day).

• How to start a local server and open it in a browser from a shell script

  I have a test suite which runs in a browser (using QUnit, though that's unimportant). The test suite requires a local server running on a particular port. Running the tests currently involves a few steps: node test/server switch to browser of choice open localhost:3000 I'd like to have a single command which starts the server then runs open localhost:3000. Ideally, the node process would remain in the foreground so it could be killed with ^C. I don't have a good understanding of subshells, so I'm not sure whether this is possible.

• Translate ImageButton from C# to XAML

  I worked out the C# code to create an ImageButton (below) that has three images (one base-image and two overlays) and three text boxes as the face of the button. I am inheriting from the Button class, which unfortunately includes several components that I didn't realize would surface until after coding and need to remove, namely the bright-blue surrounding border on IsMouseOver, and any visible borders between the buttons, as the buttons will end up in a wrapPanel and the borders need to be seamless. Now that the format has been worked out in C#, I expect that I need to translate to XAML so that I can create a ControlTemplate to get the functionality necessary, however I am not certain as to the process of translating from C# to XAML.   This question already has an answer here: Running programs in the background from terminal 4 answers How do I run a program in the background of a shell, with the ability to close the shell while leaving the program running which should not disturb the window i am working on? Lets say my UI is having problems or for some reason, I need to boot up a program from the terminal window. The program should not disturb my window in which i am working on but it should be opened from the command line and i should be able to get access to it using the normal shortcut ALT+TAB. Even the command line should exit after running the command I tried this .... "gedit file-name & exit" this is working fine but the gedit file is opening in the foreground (let i be working on some application like mozilla. After running the command ..... gedit file is coming upwards and i have to flip to mozilla again but the command should just open the gedit file not shifting to gedit application from the mozilla window)

• How to re-enable function keys in byobu?

  I was using byobu on Ubuntu 11.10 Server and I needed to hit a function key in an app, so I hit F9 to bring up the config menu and switched the keybinding set from "f-keys" to "screen-escape-keys". That worked, but now I can't re-enable all the f-keys. I found a program byobu-config that brings up the menu again, and I can switch back to screen keys from there. This fixes things for new screen processes, but the effect on the current screen session is weird: it disables the ctrl-a (screen) keys and restores F2-F8, but F9-F12 still don't do anything (they're just passed on to the foreground process). What's up with this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

• Chromium stays in backgound

  I'm running Thunderbird 31.0, FireFox 13.0 and Chromium 36.0.1985.143 on Ubuntu 14.04. Both Thunderbird and Chromium are open and running. When I click on a link in an email in Thunderbird I expected to switch from Thunderbird to Chromium to the foreground to display the website associated with the link. What happens instead is that Chromium wiggles in the Launcher and Thunderbird is still displayed. I have to click on Chromium to see the website. I don't have this problem with FireFox 13.0. Is this normal behaviour with Chromium on Ubuntu or can you change this so that you switch from Thunderbird to Chromium automatically?

  I have empathy already installed but am not sure how to configure it to join the channel at http://www.ape-project.org. I do not have a password or login name yet to properly configure the channel with Empathy and when I click "Join our IRC Channel" firefox comes back with an error stating: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (irc) isn't associated with any program. What can I do to join this (freenode) channel? UPDATE 1 Using Empathy Version 2.23.1 When viewing accounts click "Add..." Protocol: "IRC" Network: "freenode" create new nickname, password, and real name. Then went back to ape-project.org link and click "Join our IRC Channel" again. It brings my Empathy contact list to the foreground but nothing happens...

• How do I reopen an instance window once it has disappeared from desktop?

  I'm new to Ubuntu. I use Skype and often the main window just disappears from my desktop. The Skype instance itself is still running in the background. I know this because I can see its notifications on the bottom right side of the screen. If I click on the Skype icon again, Ubuntu will launch a new instance instead of maximizing the running instance. Of course this will not work because Skype will not let you sign in: Another instance of Skype may be running. How do I refocus/bring to the foreground the existing Skype instance? In Windows, you can restore running instances through the taskbar. I've tried cycling through open windows, but the running instance window is no where to be seen.

• How to give parallax backgrounds more depth

  I have 3 tiled images of some sort of galaxy/space in the background of a 2D Game: The first one has an alpha of 100%, the second an alpha of 80% and the last one has an alpha of 60%. I scroll the the one in the background slower than the other ones of course. classic parallax. In the foreground I have some particles flying towards the player to simulate some dust / stars flying by. (I know that stars don't fly by, but I think we all have seen this in a lot of games). But I can't quite achieve the depth effect I am looking for. I want it to look "deeper". I did read something about using blending modes for the backgrounds, but that would require to render them as objects right? So the question is: What is a good technique to do a scrolling parallax background in GameMaker?

• Logout/Shutdown taking very long, how to find the problem?

  Some months now, it's taking very long to logout/shutdown/reboot my ubuntu box. it doesn't happen with a fresh profile it still takes ages even when i close all running programs first (foreground programs) sometimes a couple of applications are closed before the waiting time (eg. chrome, music player) it happened with 11.10 and now 12.04 i did a fresh install of 12.04 but reinstalled all my programs and application settings/profiles (eg. chrome profile, music db, .bashrc etc.), still no solution it happens only when i use the gnome way of rebooting/shutting down/logging out when issuing "sudo reboot" in the terminal, there is no waiting time there is no process eating CPU time i have not found any evidence what is causing this whatsoever i'm using "gnome-fallback" (gnome classic 2D) what actions does gnome execute when clicking on eg. logout exactly? i want to trace these steps any help is appreciated very much!

• Will Windows Phone 7 Support Multitasking third party apps

I have trawled through some of this site - http://www.windowsphone7series.com/ but I can't seem to find the answer. Specifically will I be able to write an app on the phone that updates the cloud with the phones current GPS position in the background even when other apps are running in the foreground.
