  • Mapping element via joining table with NHibernate

    - by NhibernateIdiot
    This is stuff ive done lots of times before but my mind is just blanking at the moment, i will try and give a simple overview of my current situation. I currently have 3 tables as shown below: Office > id, name Person > id, name Office_Personnel > office_id, person_id I then have a model for Person (id, name) and Office, however the Office model contains personnel information: public class Office { int Id {get;set;} string Name {get;set;} ICollection<Person> Personnel {get;set;} } Mapping person is easy, but now im a bit stumped as to why office wont map properly. I chose to use a set when I was mapping the Personnel as there shouldn't be any duplicates, however it doesn't seem to work as I would expect... <set name="Personnel" table="office_personnel" cascade="all"> <key column="office_id" /> <one-to-many class="Person"/> </set> Now one thing that strikes me as odd is that there is no indication as to what person should be binding to (person_id). It keeps trying to find *office_id* column within the Person table. I'm sure this is just some simple problem and im being an idiot, but any help would be great! On a side note, I was weighing up if I should even bother having a middle man table, as I could directly put an Office_Id column within the Person table, but im not 100% sure if in my real project the Person class could be in multiple Offices further down the line...

  • Mapping UrlEncoded POST Values in ASP.NET Web API

    - by Rick Strahl
    If there's one thing that's a bit unexpected in ASP.NET Web API, it's the limited support for mapping url encoded POST data values to simple parameters of ApiController methods. When I first looked at this I thought I was doing something wrong, because it seems mighty odd that you can bind query string values to parameters by name, but can't bind POST values to parameters in the same way. To demonstrate here's a simple example. If you have a Web API method like this:[HttpGet] public HttpResponseMessage Authenticate(string username, string password) { …} and then hit with a URL like this: http://localhost:88/samples/authenticate?Username=ricks&Password=sekrit it works just fine. The query string values are mapped to the username and password parameters of our API method. But if you now change the method to work with [HttpPost] instead like this:[HttpPost] public HttpResponseMessage Authenticate(string username, string password) { …} and hit it with a POST HTTP Request like this: POST http://localhost:88/samples/authenticate HTTP/1.1 Host: localhost:88 Accept: text/html,application/xhtml+xml,application/xml;q=0.9,*/*;q=0.8 Content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Content-Length: 30 Username=ricks&Password=sekrit you'll find that while the request works, it doesn't actually receive the two string parameters. The username and password parameters are null and so the method is definitely going to fail. When I mentioned this over Twitter a few days ago I got a lot of responses back of why I'd want to do this in the first place - after all HTML Form submissions are the domain of MVC and not WebAPI which is a valid point. However, the more common use case is using POST Variables with AJAX calls. The following is quite common for passing simple values:$.post(url,{ Username: "Rick", Password: "sekrit" },function(result) {…}); but alas that doesn't work. How ASP.NET Web API handles Content Bodies Web API supports parsing content data in a variety of ways, but it does not deal with multiple posted content values. In effect you can only post a single content value to a Web API Action method. That one parameter can be very complex and you can bind it in a variety of ways, but ultimately you're tied to a single POST content value in your parameter definition. While it's possible to support multiple parameters on a POST/PUT operation, only one parameter can be mapped to the actual content - the rest have to be mapped to route values or the query string. Web API treats the whole request body as one big chunk of data that is sent to a Media Type Formatter that's responsible for de-serializing the content into whatever value the method requires. The restriction comes from async nature of Web API where the request data is read only once inside of the formatter that retrieves and deserializes it. Because it's read once, checking for content (like individual POST variables) first is not possible. However, Web API does provide a couple of ways to access the form POST data: Model Binding - object property mapping to bind POST values FormDataCollection - collection of POST keys/values ModelBinding POST Values - Binding POST data to Object Properties The recommended way to handle POST values in Web API is to use Model Binding, which maps individual urlencoded POST values to properties of a model object provided as the parameter. Model binding requires a single object as input to be bound to the POST data, with each POST key that matches a property name (including nested properties like Address.Street) being mapped and updated including automatic type conversion of simple types. This is a very nice feature - and a familiar one from MVC - that makes it very easy to have model objects mapped directly from inbound data. The obvious drawback with Model Binding is that you need a model for it to work: You have to provide a strongly typed object that can receive the data and this object has to map the inbound data. To rewrite the example above to use ModelBinding I have to create a class maps the properties that I need as parameters:public class LoginData { public string Username { get; set; } public string Password { get; set; } } and then accept the data like this in the API method:[HttpPost] public HttpResponseMessage Authenticate(LoginData login) { string username = login.Username; string password = login.Password; … } This works fine mapping the POST values to the properties of the login object. As a side benefit of this method definition, the method now also allows posting of JSON or XML to the same endpoint. If I change my request to send JSON like this: POST http://localhost:88/samples/authenticate HTTP/1.1 Host: localhost:88 Accept: application/jsonContent-type: application/json Content-Length: 40 {"Username":"ricks","Password":"sekrit"} it works as well and transparently, courtesy of the nice Content Negotiation features of Web API. There's nothing wrong with using Model binding and in fact it's a common practice to use (view) model object for inputs coming back from the client and mapping them into these models. But it can be  kind of a hassle if you have AJAX applications with a ton of backend hits, especially if many methods are very atomic and focused and don't effectively require a model or view. Not always do you have to pass structured data, but sometimes there are just a couple of simple response values that need to be sent back. If all you need is to pass a couple operational parameters, creating a view model object just for parameter purposes seems like overkill. Maybe you can use the query string instead (if that makes sense), but if you can't then you can often end up with a plethora of 'message objects' that serve no further  purpose than to make Model Binding work. Note that you can accept multiple parameters with ModelBinding so the following would still work:[HttpPost] public HttpResponseMessage Authenticate(LoginData login, string loginDomain) but only the object will be bound to POST data. As long as loginDomain comes from the querystring or route data this will work. Collecting POST values with FormDataCollection Another more dynamic approach to handle POST values is to collect POST data into a FormDataCollection. FormDataCollection is a very basic key/value collection (like FormCollection in MVC and Request.Form in ASP.NET in general) and then read the values out individually by querying each. [HttpPost] public HttpResponseMessage Authenticate(FormDataCollection form) { var username = form.Get("Username"); var password = form.Get("Password"); …} The downside to this approach is that it's not strongly typed, you have to handle type conversions on non-string parameters, and it gets a bit more complicated to test such as setup as you have to seed a FormDataCollection with data. On the other hand it's flexible and easy to use and especially with string parameters is easy to deal with. It's also dynamic, so if the client sends you a variety of combinations of values on which you make operating decisions, this is much easier to work with than a strongly typed object that would have to account for all possible values up front. The downside is that the code looks old school and isn't as self-documenting as a parameter list or object parameter would be. Nevertheless it's totally functionality and a viable choice for collecting POST values. What about [FromBody]? Web API also has a [FromBody] attribute that can be assigned to parameters. If you have multiple parameters on a Web API method signature you can use [FromBody] to specify which one will be parsed from the POST content. Unfortunately it's not terribly useful as it only returns content in raw format and requires a totally non-standard format ("=content") to specify your content. For more info in how FromBody works and several related issues to how POST data is mapped, you can check out Mike Stalls post: How WebAPI does Parameter Binding Not really sure where the Web API team thought [FromBody] would really be a good fit other than a down and dirty way to send a full string buffer. Extending Web API to make multiple POST Vars work? Don't think so Clearly there's no native support for multiple POST variables being mapped to parameters, which is a bit of a bummer. I know in my own work on one project my customer actually found this to be a real sticking point in their AJAX backend work, and we ended up not using Web API and using MVC JSON features instead. That's kind of sad because Web API is supposed to be the proper solution for AJAX backends. With all of ASP.NET Web API's extensibility you'd think there would be some way to build this functionality on our own, but after spending a bit of time digging and asking some of the experts from the team and Web API community I didn't hear anything that even suggests that this is possible. From what I could find I'd say it's not possible primarily because Web API's Routing engine does not account for the POST variable mapping. This means [HttpPost] methods with url encoded POST buffers are not mapped to the parameters of the endpoint, and so the routes would never even trigger a request that could be intercepted. Once the routing doesn't work there's not much that can be done. If somebody has an idea how this could be accomplished I would love to hear about it. Do we really need multi-value POST mapping? I think that that POST value mapping is a feature that one would expect of any API tool to have. If you look at common APIs out there like Flicker and Google Maps etc. they all work with POST data. POST data is very prominent much more so than JSON inputs and so supporting as many options that enable would seem to be crucial. All that aside, Web API does provide very nice features with Model Binding that allows you to capture many POST variables easily enough, and logistically this will let you build whatever you need with POST data of all shapes as long as you map objects. But having to have an object for every operation that receives a data input is going to take its toll in heavy AJAX applications, with a lot of types created that do nothing more than act as parameter containers. I also think that POST variable mapping is an expected behavior and Web APIs non-support will likely result in many, many questions like this one: How do I bind a simple POST value in ASP.NET WebAPI RC? with no clear answer to this question. I hope for V.next of WebAPI Microsoft will consider this a feature that's worth adding. • Subsonic custom mapping of objects to tables

    - by codekaizen
    Geeting, I'm using Compact Framework 3.5 and have tenatively settled on a custom build of Subsonic 3.0 to do data access. The trouble is that I am used to developing model-first but am also interested in keeping control of my DB schema. Therefore, neither ActiveRecord or Repository appears to meet my needs, and I want to use my existing POCO model and map it to my existing tables. I'm used to doing this via NHibernate and Entity Framework. After some investigation, it appears that I might be able to author a custom QueryMapping to give me the custom mapping I want. Before I start down this path, however, I'd like to see some kind of example of this being done. I can't seem to find any on the web, and wonder if anyone could give input on experience with Subsonic, model-first and a custom Table-per-Type and Table-per-Hierarchy mapping.

  • Issue with Mapping Textures to Models in Blender

    - by Passage
    I've been trying to texture a model using Blender, but when I draw on the UV Editor it doesn't show up on the model, and I can't draw on the model itself. I've tried saving the image and the 3D View is set to Texture. Everything seems to be in order and I've followed several tutorials, but none of them seem to work with the version I'm using (2.64-- update was necessary for import plugin) and I'm absolutely stumped. How can I draw textures to the model? If not within Blender itself, how do I export/import the textures? EDIT: Vertex Paint works, though it is insufficient for my purposes. In addition, moving to the rendered view produces a solid-color model with none of the applied textures.

  • How do you handle domain logic that spans multiple model objects in an ORM?

    - by duality_
    So I know that business logic should be placed in the model. But using an ORM it is not as clear where I should place code that handles multiple objects. E.g. let's say we have a Customer model which has a type of either sporty or posh and we wanted to customer.add_bonus() to every posh customer. Where would we do this? Do we create a new class to handle all this? If yes, where do we put it (alongside all the other model classes, but not subclass it from the ORM?)? I'm currently using django framework in python, so specific suggestions are even more wanted.

  • One Model to Rule Them All - VS2010 UML, ADO.NET Entity Data Model, and T4

    - by Eric J.
    I worked on a fairly large project a while back where we modeled the classes in Enterprise Architect and generated the (partial) POCO classes (complete with model-driven business rule validations), persistence (NHibernate mapping file) and DDL. Based on certain model attributes we could flag alternate generation strategies or indicate that a particular portion would be entirely hand-coded. There was a good deal of initial investment, but it paid large dividends over the lifetime of a 15 developer, 3 year project. I'm investigating doing something similar with the current Microsoft technology stack. The place I'm stuck is that class modeling is done with the VS 2010 UML tools, but logical data modeling is done with Entity Data Modeler. Is it a reasonable path to use VS 2010 UML as the "single source of truth" and code generate the edmx files based on the class model? That's the inverse of the common path to create the entity model and use a POCO generator to generate classes. However, a good class model can be used to generate much more than just the properties so I tend to view it as a better choice than the entity model.

  • Turing Model Vs Von Neuman model

    - by Santhosh
    First some background (based on my understanding).. The Von-Neumann architecture describes the stored-program computer where instructions and data are stored in memory and the machine works by changing it's internal state, i.e an instruction operated on some data and modifies the data. So inherently, there is state msintained in the system. The Turing machine architecture works by manipulating symbols on a tape. i.e A tape with infinite number of slots exists, and at any one point in time, the Turing machine is in a particular slot. Based on the symbol read at that slot, the machine change the symbol and move to a different slot. All of this is deterministic. My questions are Is there any relation between these two models (Was the Von Neuman model based on or inspired by the Turing model)? Can we say that Turing model is a superset of Von Newman model? Does functional Programming fit into Turing model. If so how? (I assume FP does not lend itself nicely to the Von Neuman model)

  • nhibernate mapping: A collection with cascade="all-delete-orphan" was no longer referenced

    - by Chev
    Hi All I am having some probs with my fluent mappings. I have an entity with a child collection of entities i.e Event and EventItems for example. If I set my cascade mapping of the collection to AllDeleteOrphan I get the following error when saving a new entity to the DB: NHibernate.HibernateException : A collection with cascade="all-delete-orphan" was no longer referenced by the owning entity instance: Core.Event.EventItems If I set the cascade to All it works fine? Below are my classes and mapping files: public class EventMap : ClassMap<Event> { public EventMap() { Id(x => x.Id, "Id") .UnsavedValue("00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000") .GeneratedBy.GuidComb(); Map(x => x.Name); HasMany(x => x.EventItems) .Inverse() .KeyColumn("EventId") .AsBag() .Cascade.AllDeleteOrphan(); } } public class EventItemMap : SubclassMap<EventItem> { public EventItemMap() { Id(x => x.Id, "Id") .UnsavedValue("00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000") .GeneratedBy.GuidComb(); References(x => x.Event, "EventId"); } } public class Event : EntityBase { private IList<EventItem> _EventItems; protected Event() { InitMembers(); } public Event(string name) : this() { Name = name; } private void InitMembers() { _EventItems = new List<EventItem>(); } public virtual EventItem CreateEventItem(string name) { EventItem eventItem = new EventItem(this, name); _EventItems.Add(eventItem); return eventItem; } public virtual string Name { get; private set; } public virtual IList<EventItem> EventItems { get { return _EventItems.ToList<EventItem>().AsReadOnly(); } protected set { _EventItems = value; } } } public class EventItem : EntityBase { protected EventItem() { } public EventItem(Event @event, string name):base(name) { Event = @event; } public virtual Event Event { get; private set; } } Pretty stumped here. • NHibernate complex one-to-one mapping

    - by Eugene Strizhok
    There is a table A containing common unversioned data for entities. There are also tables B,C,D with versioned data of particular entity type. All of these tables are referencing table A. The task is to add a mapping of a property of entity's type, for example, stored in table B, which would reference table A, and specify a rule how entity should be fetch from table B based on identifier from table A. (For example, to fetch latest version of an entity). It it possible with NHibernate?

  • extbase mapping to an existing table doesn't work

    - by hering
    I've extended the pages table and now I want to use some of the data in a domain object called "Tags". So I tried the following in the /Configuration/TypoScript/setup.txt: plugin.myextension.persistence.classes.Tx_myextension_Domain_Model_Tag { mapping { tableName = pages recordType = Tx_myextension_Domain_Model_Tag columns { tx_myextension_tag_name.mapOnProperty = name uid.mapOnProperty = id } } } But It seems that the extension tries to access the table Tx_myextension_Domain_Model_Tag (which doesn't exist) This is the error I receive: Tx_Extbase_Persistence_Storage_Exception_SqlError` Table 'tx_myextension_domain_model_tag' doesn't exist: SELECT tx_myextension_domain_model_tag.* FROM tx_myextension_domain_model_tag WHERE tx_myextension_domain_model_tag.id = '24' LIMIT 1 What have I done wrong?

  • FluentNhibernate many-to-many mapping - resolving record is not inserted

    - by Dmitriy Nagirnyak
    Hi, I have a many-to-many mapping defined (only relevant fields included): // MODEL: public class User : IPersistentObject { public User() { Permissions = new HashedSet<Permission>(); } public virtual int Id { get; protected set; } public virtual ISet<Permission> Permissions { get; set; } } public class Permission : IPersistentObject { public Permission() { } public virtual int Id { get; set; } } // MAPPING: public class UserMap : ClassMap<User> { public UserMap() { Id(x => x.Id); HasManyToMany(x => x.Permissions).Cascade.All().AsSet(); } } public class PermissionMap : ClassMap<Permission> { public PermissionMap() { Id(x => x.Id).GeneratedBy.Assigned(); Map(x => x.Description); } } The following test fails as there is no record inserted into User_Permission table: [Test] public void AddingANewUserPrivilegeShouldSaveIt() { var p1 = new Permission { Id = 123, Description = "p1" }; Session.Save(p1); var u = new User { Email = "[email protected]" }; u.Permissions.Add(p1); Session.Save(u); var userId = u.Id; Session.Evict(u); Session.Get<User>(userId).Permissions.Should().Not.Be.Empty(); } The SQL executed is (SQLite): INSERT INTO "Permission" (Description, Id) VALUES (@p0, @p1);@p0 = 'p1', @p1 = 1 INSERT INTO "User" (Email) VALUES (@p0); select last_insert_rowid();@p0 = '[email protected]' SELECT user0_.Id as Id2_0_, user0_.Email as Email2_0_ FROM "User" user0_ WHERE user0_.Id=@p0;@p0 = 1 SELECT permission0_.UserId as UserId1_, permission0_.PermissionId as Permissi2_1_, permission1_.Id as Id4_0_, permission1_.Description as Descript2_4_0_ FROM User_Permissions permission0_ left outer join "Permission" permission1_ on permission0_.PermissionId=permission1_.Id WHERE permission0_.UserId=@p0;@p0 = 1 We can clearly see that there is no record inserted into the User_Permissions table where it should be. Not sure what I am doing wrong and need an advice. So can you please help me to pass this test. Thanks, Dmitriy.

    I am about to start on a project where I need to display maps with cross streets and possibly directions. I know there are a lot of API for the web, but I was wondering what the best solution is for a desktop application. I know of Bing Maps and I believe there are some Google Maps solutions out there as well. Any help or information on good mapping API's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • How to seperate the model from the view?

    - by geejay
    I have a bunch of model objects. These objects end up being rendered as views (say forms) in a rich client app. I started to annotate the fields in the model objects (Java annotations) with things that let me render them as forms on the fly (e.g displayname, group, page, validvalues). I now realise that the view has crept into the model. How should I seperate the view logic out of the model objects? TECH: Java, Java Annotations, Eclipse RCP

  • In MVC, why can't a model create a view?

    - by MUY Belgium
    I have a web application written in Perl with a controller, some "views" and some "Models". Each "Model" is corresponding to one "View". The controller (one file) creates an Model object corresponding to each view (view is a CGI argument) then retrieve the view from the module it has just created. Indeed, this should be bad thing but can you argue a bit more about it. My first idea was that since the object "Model" depends upon the "view", then the "model" is actually a view. But also the fact that ALL the cgi parameters are passed to the Model causes the "Model" to become not truelly a view but to loose all interest, since it is only related to the current implementation of the web apps. On other words, that the "Model" keep model but loose its "comprehensiveness" ("Model" is not easily understandable). I'm am quite new in project analysis, so please do not be too harsh. Why is this bad? I have made a prototype with the main structures I have understood of this web application, made as short as possible. #Model.pm package Model; import { # this requires an attribute called "view" # and this require an argument which is the cgi params } ... #View1.pm package View1; ... #Model1.pm package ModelView1 ; base Model; use View1; sub new { my $class = shift; my $arg = shift; Model::DoSomething($arg); $self->view = new View1($arg); ... } #controller.cgi my $model = 0; ... $model = new Model1( cgi_param => params() ); #there is severall models here ... print $model->get_view()->get_html();

  • MVC4 Model in View has nested data - cannot get data in model

    - by Taersious
    I have a Model defined that gets me a View with a list of RadioButtons, per IEnumerable. Within that Model, I want to display a list of checkboxes that will vary based on the item selected. Finally, there will be a Textarea in the same view once the user has selected from the available checkboxes, with some dynamic text there based on the CheckBoxes that are selected. What we should end up with is a Table-per-hierarchy. The layout is such that the RadioButtonList is in the first table cell, the CheckBoxList is in the middle table cell, and the Textarea is ini the right table cell. If anyone can guide me to what my model-view should be to achieve this result, I'll be most pleased... Here are my codes: // // View Model for implementing radio button list public class RadioButtonViewModel { // objects public List<RadioButtonItem> RadioButtonList { get; set; } public string SelectedRadioButton { get; set; } } // // Object for handling each radio button public class RadioButtonItem { // this object public string Name { get; set; } public bool Selected { get; set; } public int ObjectId { get; set; } // columns public virtual IEnumerable<CheckBoxItem> CheckBoxItems { get; set; } } // // Object for handling each checkbox public class CheckBoxViewModel { public List<CheckBoxItem> CheckBoxList { get; set; } } // // Object for handling each check box public class CheckBoxItem { public string Name { get; set; } public bool Selected { get; set; } public int ObjectId { get; set; } public virtual RadioButtonItem RadioButtonItem { get; set; } } and the view @model IEnumerable<EF_Utility.Models.RadioButtonItem> @{ ViewBag.Title = "Connect"; ViewBag.Selected = Request["name"] != null ? Request["name"].ToString() : ""; } @using (Html.BeginForm("Objects" , "Home", FormMethod.Post) ){ @Html.ValidationSummary(true) <table> <tbody> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid grey; vertical-align:top;"> <table> <tbody> <tr> <th style="text-align:left; width: 50px;">Select</th> <th style="text-align:left;">View or Table Name</th> </tr> @{ foreach (EF_Utility.Models.RadioButtonItem item in @Model ) { <tr> <td> @Html.RadioButton("RadioButtonViewModel.SelectedRadioButton", item.Name, ViewBag.Selected == item.Name ? true : item.Selected, new { @onclick = "this.form.action='/Home/Connect?name=" + item.Name + "'; this.form.submit(); " }) </td> <td> @Html.DisplayFor(i => item.Name) </td> </tr> } } </tbody> </table> </td> <td style="border: 1px solid grey; width: 220px; vertical-align:top; @(ViewBag.Selected == "" ? "display:none;" : "")"> <table> <tbody> <tr> <th>Column </th> </tr> <tr> <td><!-- checkboxes will go here --> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> </td> <td style="border: 1px solid grey; vertical-align:top; @(ViewBag.Selected == "" ? "display:none;" : "")"> <textarea name="output" id="output" rows="24" cols="48"></textarea> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> } and the relevant controller public ActionResult Connect() { /* TEST SESSION FIRST*/ if( Session["connstr"] == null) return RedirectToAction("Index"); else { ViewBag.Message = ""; ViewBag.ConnectionString = Server.UrlDecode( Session["connstr"].ToString() ); ViewBag.Server = ParseConnectionString( ViewBag.ConnectionString, "Data Source" ); ViewBag.Database = ParseConnectionString( ViewBag.ConnectionString, "Initial Catalog" ); using( var db = new SysDbContext(ViewBag.ConnectionString)) { var objects = db.Set<SqlObject>().ToArray(); var model = objects .Select( o => new RadioButtonItem { Name = o.Name, Selected = false, ObjectId = o.Object_Id, CheckBoxItems = Enumerable.Empty<EF_Utility.Models.CheckBoxItem>() } ) .OrderBy( rb => rb.Name ); return View( model ); } } } What I am missing it seems, is the code in my Connect() method that will bring the data context forward; at that point, it should be fairly straight-forward to set up the Html for the View. EDIT ** So I am going to need to bind the RadioButtonItem to the view with something like the following, except my CheckBoxList will NOT be an empty set. // // POST: /Home/Connect/ [HttpPost] public ActionResult Connect( RadioButtonItem rbl ) { /* TEST SESSION FIRST*/ if ( Session["connstr"] == null ) return RedirectToAction( "Index" ); else { ViewBag.Message = ""; ViewBag.ConnectionString = Server.UrlDecode( Session["connstr"].ToString() ); ViewBag.Server = ParseConnectionString( ViewBag.ConnectionString, "Data Source" ); ViewBag.Database = ParseConnectionString( ViewBag.ConnectionString, "Initial Catalog" ); using ( var db = new SysDbContext( ViewBag.ConnectionString ) ) { var objects = db.Set<SqlObject>().ToArray(); var model = objects .Select( o => new RadioButtonItem { Name = o.Name, Selected = false, ObjectId = o.Object_Id, CheckBoxItems = Enumerable.Empty<EF_Utility.Models.CheckBoxItem>() } ) .OrderBy( rb => rb.Name ); return View( model ); } } }

  • design a model for a system of dependent variables

    - by dbaseman
    I'm dealing with a modeling system (financial) that has dozens of variables. Some of the variables are independent, and function as inputs to the system; most of them are calculated from other variables (independent and calculated) in the system. What I'm looking for is a clean, elegant way to: define the function of each dependent variable in the system trigger a re-calculation, whenever a variable changes, of the variables that depend on it A naive way to do this would be to write a single class that implements INotifyPropertyChanged, and uses a massive case statement that lists out all the variable names x1, x2, ... xn on which others depend, and, whenever a variable xi changes, triggers a recalculation of each of that variable's dependencies. I feel that this naive approach is flawed, and that there must be a cleaner way. I started down the path of defining a CalculationManager<TModel> class, which would be used (in a simple example) something like as follows: public class Model : INotifyPropertyChanged { private CalculationManager<Model> _calculationManager = new CalculationManager<Model>(); // each setter triggers a "PropertyChanged" event public double? Height { get; set; } public double? Weight { get; set; } public double? BMI { get; set; } public Model() { _calculationManager.DefineDependency<double?>( forProperty: model => model.BMI, usingCalculation: (height, weight) => weight / Math.Pow(height, 2), withInputs: model => model.Height, model.Weight); } // INotifyPropertyChanged implementation here } I won't reproduce CalculationManager<TModel> here, but the basic idea is that it sets up a dependency map, listens for PropertyChanged events, and updates dependent properties as needed. I still feel that I'm missing something major here, and that this isn't the right approach: the (mis)use of INotifyPropertyChanged seems to me like a code smell the withInputs parameter is defined as params Expression<Func<TModel, T>>[] args, which means that the argument list of usingCalculation is not checked at compile time the argument list (weight, height) is redundantly defined in both usingCalculation and withInputs I am sure that this kind of system of dependent variables must be common in computational mathematics, physics, finance, and other fields. Does someone know of an established set of ideas that deal with what I'm grasping at here? Would this be a suitable application for a functional language like F#? Edit More context: The model currently exists in an Excel spreadsheet, and is being migrated to a C# application. It is run on-demand, and the variables can be modified by the user from the application's UI. Its purpose is to retrieve variables that the business is interested in, given current inputs from the markets, and model parameters set by the business.
