    - by user37652
I need to be enlightened in this topic. First, is it possible to run open dns on a network so that you won't have to install the open dns updater to update the ip address of those machines with dynamic ip address. Second, how do I set it up. Can I set it up on the router?

  • "Must-Have" Open Source software?

    - by marco.ragogna
When I am searching for a program to use at home I will consider at first all open source programs because I like the philosophy, the approach and the communities behind these projects. What are, in your opinion, the must-have Open Source software that should be installed on every Home PC? One program per answer please.

  • Open dialog box won't show files in libraries, but explorer will

    - by Alex
I have the weirdest problem when trying to open or save files. When I try to get to "My Documents" through the "Libraries" side link it won't show any of my files. It will show them if I go around from the C:// drive into the user files though. I thought it was because I didn't have the right location defined for the "Libraries" shortcut, but when I use "Explorer" to open my "Libraries" it shows all the files. Any ideas?

  • What are some ramifications of open source software turning into closed source software? [on hold]

    - by Verrier
If a company takes a permissively licensed open source application and then develops a closed source application from that by reworking extensive parts of the application, adding new features and applying bug fixes... Ignoring any license requirements... How does the transition happen and what can be done to prevent it beyond choosing a difference license? What are the (ethical or social) responsibilities for the company? (For example: Giving back to the open source project would be the ethical thing to do) If the open source version and closed source version are both available, how does the competition affect either product? Are there any examples of companies or products that have done this (either successfully or unsuccessfully) in the past? What was the community attitude toward those projects?

  • How do you go about understanding the source code of an Open source project?

    - by Anirudh Vemula
I am planning to contribute code through patches to some open source organisations to become more aware of open source development. I have chosen some organisations but when I download their source code, I don't seem to understand even a bit of it. How do I go about understanding their source code? I tried going through resolving a bug but finding the place in the source code where the bug is present is also difficult when you have no idea about how the code is structured and implemented. I need help on this so I can start working on an open source code.

  • How do I store the OAuth v1 consumer key and secret for an open source desktop Twitter client without revealing it to the user?

    - by Justin Dearing
I want to make a thick-client, desktop, open source twitter client. I happen to be using .NET as my language and Twitterizer as my OAuth/Twitter wrapper, and my app will likely be released as open source. To get an OAuth token, four pieces of information are required: Access Token (twitter user name) Access Secret (twitter password) Consumer Key Consumer Secret The second two pieces of information are not to be shared, like a PGP private key. However, due to the way the OAuth authorization flow is designed, these need to be on the native app. Even if the application was not open source, and the consumer key/secret were encrypted, a reasonably skilled user could gain access to the consumer key/secret pair. So my question is, how do I get around this problem? What is the proper strategy for a desktop Twitter client to protect its consumer key and secret?

  • Can I require a large donation ($499) in order for a company to receive an extended version of my open source project? [closed]

    - by Damian
I want to make my project open source but some of its more advanced features are targeted to companies so I would like to require a donation before I send the source code to the donating company. It will be something like that: "If you want to use the extended features of XXXXXXX, please make a donation of $499 and you will receive the source code and the jar with the extended features. You will also receive personalized support by email." Is it legal and acceptable to do something like that? Can the companies donate an amount like that to an open source project? I mean, is it easy for them in terms of their accounting, tax, etc. to donate $499 dollars to an open source project. I know it is not a matter whether they will have money or not but more of a paying procedure matter.

  • Why do some open source projects do not allow to report issues in a public issue tracker?

    - by linquize
Why do some open source projects do not allow to report issues in a public issue tracker? Those projects requires the issues to be reported via email, and the issues may be forwarded to people in mailing list. Users may repeatedly report the same issue if there is no public issue tracker, as they have no easy way to know what have been reported before. The project team members need to spend extra time answering those repeated issues. Some projects do have a public issue tracker, but the issues are still reported through email and they are posted only by the project team only after filtering. It does not allow anyone to report directly in issue tracker. (example: SVN) Such arrangement is not transparent nor open, which I think it violates the philosophy of open source. And it is outdated.

  • Develop open-source library and get donations for it?

    - by Robottinosino
I have a nice open-source library in mind to write. It would take a few months to develop properly and I would need to stop supporting myself though other projects. Could anybody share experiences and best-known-methods to get some sort of financial support through the Internet whilst developing free, open-source code? Or, phrased more directly: which systems apart from "PayPal" are in use by programmers to get donations for open-source code? Provide a list. Optionally, sort the list as if it were a recommendation in descending order of positive experiences made with each system. Optionally, share a tidbit of your success story getting this kind of financial support. Optionally: give an indication as to how much money can be made that way? (I heard Vim's author could support himself just with donations at some point?)

  • How to go about "taking over" an open-source project?

    - by LuxuryMode
There's an open-source project that I'm interested in and use regularly. It's licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and it has basically no activity any more. It's hosted on Google Code and I'm interested in continuing it's development. I'm new to the open-source process and I'm trying to figure out the appropriate way to go about this. Can I just check it out and push it to github so I can continue it's development in the open there? Should I contact the project "owner" first? Also, do I leave all the author information at the top of the classes, etc even though I'm going to be making changes..(I'm assuming the answer is yes)? Also, how do I practically adhere to the license requirement of "all modifications are clearly marked as being the work of the modifier"? Do I place a comment by every change I make?

  • Usage of open source libraries in high governance and risk-averse large organizations (banks, financ

    - by bart
Does anyone have any good stories of these kinds of organizations being open to using open source dependencies (and also tools). Many staff I've encountered have little or no exposure to open source/systems and open source is treated with great suspicion. Some reasons given for this are lack of support and robustness, which is ironic given the number of end-of-life unsupported vendor products that are in production. I'm also interested in any success stories where you've seen open source go into orgs like this and have a real benefit!

All operating system I use apart form Windows have a “Open with…” options for there Explorer, Finder, whatever. However since there is an exceptions it is possible. The questions I have is: How can a “Open with…” can be archived with windows? Is there perhaps a tool which can do it?

  • Open Data, Government and Transparency

    - by Tori Wieldt
A new track at TDC (The Developer's Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil) is titled Open Data. It deals with open data, government and transparency. Saturday will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers are invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government.  Alexandre Gomes, co-lead of the track, says "I want to inspire developers to become "Civic hackers:" developers who create apps to make society better." It is a chance for developers to do well and do good. There are many opportunities for developers, including monitoring government expenditures and getting citizens involved via social networks. The open data movement is growing worldwide. One initiative, the Open Government Partnership, is working to make government data easier to find and access. Making this data easily available means that with the right applications, it will be easier for people to make decisions and suggestions about government policies based on detailed information. Last April, the Open Government Partnership held its annual meeting in Brasilia, the capitol of Brazil. It was a great success showcasing the innovative work being done in open data by governments, civil societies and individuals around the world. For example, Bulgaria now publishes daily data on budget spending for all public institutions. Alexandre Gomes Explains Open Data At TDC, the Open Data track will include a presentation of examples of successful open data projects, an introduction to the semantic web, how to handle big data sets, techniques of data visualization, and how to design APIs.The other track lead is Christian Moryah Miranda, a systems analyst for the Brazilian Government's Ministry of Planning. "The Brazilian government wholeheartedly supports this effort. In order to make our data available to the public, it forces us to be more consistent with our data across ministries, and that's a good step forward for us," he said. He explained the government knows they cannot achieve everything they would like without help from the public. "It is not the government versus the people, rather citizens are partners with the government, and together we can achieve great things!" Miranda exclaimed. Saturday at TDC will be a "transparency hacker day" where developers will be invited to create applications using open data from the Brazilian government. Attendees are invited to pitch their ideas, work in small groups, and present their project at the end of the conference. "For example," Gomes said, "the Brazilian government just released the salaries of all government employees and I can't wait to see what developers can do with that." • Is it bad to join open-source projects as an amateur?

    - by esqew
I've thought for about six months now that I should join an open-source iPhone or iPad project to hone my skills in Objective-C, but every time I go to do it I see thousands of lines of code on huge projects that I end up convincing myself I would never understand. I always think that my commits would just end up being a hassle for project admins and more senior contributors, so I always back out at the last second. My question essentially is, is it a hassle when an intermediately-experienced programmer joins an open-source project?

  • Where can I announce a new open source project?

    - by Dmitri
Is there a place where people could announce their open source project and look for other developers to join? I don't want to just post a link here because I don't want to be accused of spamming. I am just wondering if maybe on programmers.stackexchange.com it would be possible to do something like this? Or if anyone can recommend a website where developers of open source projects can post their link, please let me know.

  • How are requirements determined in open source software projects?

    - by Aron Lindberg
In corporate in-house software development it is common for requirements to be determined through a formal process resulting in the creation of a number of requirements documents. In open source software development, this often seems to be absent. Hence, my question is: how are requirements determined in open source software projects? By "determining requirements" I simply mean "figuring out what features etc. should be developed as part of a specific software".

  • Where can I find a legal "permission to work on open source" document?

    - by Nathan Long
One of the things I really like about my current job is that we developers are encouraged to make open source contributions. However, this encouragement has always been verbal. I've read some horror stories about developers having their open-source work legally claimed by their employer. I'd be more comfortable if we had something in writing from my employer saying that contributions are allowed and not owned by the company. Understanding that you are not lawyers, does anyone know where to find a boilerplate document to this effect?

  • Why ethernet cables must be ended with specific arrangement

    - by adopilot
I just accepted that ethernet cables CAT 5 and more must be ended with specific arrangement. I learned when I ending my cables to take attention that either end must be in same arrangement(568A or 568B ). Sometime I get stacked with my fellow servant that they claim that Cable should work if just arrangement at both side are same even if it is not in 568A or 568B layouts. My experience said that it is not true, but I am now looking for some technical argument to prove that.
