• How do you name your servers?

- by awells527
How do you decide what you name your servers? Do you keep it simple/boring like svr-01, svr-02; make it descriptive like citrix-01, share-01; or do you make it creative like the names of the planets, peanuts characters, etc?

• What's the easiest way for a musician to make clips of their music freely availalbe?

- by Clay Nichols
I'm helping (pro bono) a really cool musician make samples of his music available so folks can share it. Essentially "shareware" for his music. Surely someone must have done this before. So far, I've found : http://sutros.com/ which is free but I've not read up on their Creative Commons license. And found a list here of other sites: http://www.vocalist.org.uk/artists_upload.html Any other suggestions?

• Dell 4600 Driver for Audio Card Windows 7

- by Littlet-ENG
I just installed windows 7 on dell 4600 desktop. the Audio card is a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2. I've look all over, and I can't find a driver for windows 7. I've also looked at Vista Drivers. It seems Dell is not supporting Windows 7 with this computer. I've got a work around, but would like a driver if possible. Any help would be appreciated.

• How much power supply does a typical PC build need?

- by Wesley
I am building a system for a friend. The potential specs are like this so far: ASUS A8N-VM motherboard AMD Athlon 64 3200+ @ 2.0 GHz Any 7200RPM SATA HDD Palit GeForce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 PCIe One DVD/CD combo drive Creative SB Live! 5.1 sound card I was wondering what wattage of power supply would be able to support this hardware. I had a 350W in mind... would that do?

• How to handle many daily emails from cron efficiently?

- by drumfire
With each new server comes at least one more daily crontab email. The FreeBSD servers even send two: a daily and a security run output. Thanks to my obsession with virtualisation the number of emails I need to read (and then often discard without further action) is becoming too much. What ways are there to manage / automate this process? Can emails be replaced by something that is web based? Surely some of you must have found creative ways for this.

• Cannot access the EC2 server - permissions problems, ssh is dead

- by user1494072
One of our developers worked on a beta server and accidentally changed the permissions of the whole system (chmod /) to root. Due to that, services are unable to access files, and we can't ssh to the machine (permission denied on the key) (UPDATE: ssh is dead after reboot, probably can't start). Does Amazon has an option to browse files / physically access the machine? Any other creative solution?

• Open Source Excel training documentations?

- by William
I'm a trainer, basically. I'd like to find some sort of Excel-based training that's under the creative commons, or another awesome license. I want to use it to train others, and make it better. If this doesn't exist, I may have to write it. Because it should.

• Kill PHP process when connection is closed

- by user838437
I've posted the following question to SO, but thought there might be a server based solution. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/9053964/php-script-with-sleep-does-not-exit-on-connection-close I'm running an Ubuntu VPS to run this script, and I'm trying to get the script to die when the user closes the window/tab of his browser. There are several PHP based functions to see if the connection is still open, but none works (trust me, tested them all). Any creative ideas on how I can do this through the server maybe?

• What is the best email address for a personal website with my name as the .com domain name?

- by Travis Pflanz
I convinced one of my creative friends to finally purchase his own name as a domain name and start a portfolio. It has been years coming, but mission finally accomplished. Now I am helping him build his website. For my own personal website, I registered pflanz.me and my personal website is travis.pflanz.me. My email address is travis AT pflanz.me. I really like this idea for a personal website. I also have travispflanz.com which redirects to travis.pflanz.me, as does pflanz.me (pflanz.com was not available). While I really like this idea, he did not, and only wanted the .com, so his domain is FirstnameLastname.com. One of the main reasons I went the route I did is because I couldn't come up with a suitable @travispflanz.com email address, travis AT travispflanz.com just seems odd, as does me AT travispflanz.com. My question, what are the best personal email addresses to use for personal full-name .com domain names? Thanks!

• When returning from a period of not programming, do you find you've improved?

- by Jon Purdy
It seems as though whenever I take an extended break from programming—whether to pursue other interests or simply because I fall out of the habit for a while—I invariably find that when I return to a project and set to coding, I come with an abundance of new ideas, novel approaches, and just plain better code. It may be because I have a lot of other creative interests besides programming, and my mind likes to find correlation and crossover between them, so while I'm doing one thing, in the back of my mind I'm usually also applying it to another. So what's your experience? Do you ever return from a break (whether intentional or not) feeling not only refreshed, but also somehow noticeably improved? Is it actually the norm?

• No sound after video card replaced (AMD Radeon HD 7770)

- by Sean
Issue: no sound System: Dual boot Windows 7 (sda) Ubuntu 12.04 (sdb) 2 harddrives Dell XPS 730 Video card: AMD Radeo HD 7770 Diamond Multimedia Sound card: Creative Labs SB X-Fi Additional info: My sound used to work. Then, my old video card (NVIDIA geforce 280) died. I bought and installed a new video card: Radeon HD 7770. After this, my sound no longer worked in ubuntu (Win7 audio still works). Everything else in ubuntu, such as video, works fine. I suspect it has something to do with the fact that the Radeon card includes sound capability. Problem Details: If I click on System Settings - Sound, the panel freezes and stops responding indefinitely. The sound volume icon at the top of the screen (by the clock) shows 3 dashes beside it "---", and an empty drop-down box shows if I click on it. (Possibly related to 1.) When I reboot my machine, I get the message: "gnome settings daemon not responding". I have to force the reboot. I reinstalled ubunbu (perserving my home directory) and the problem persists. Diagnostics info: Following procedure outlined here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting The following is a list of terminal commands, and their output: $ aplay -l List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices There is no listing beyond that, and the command freezes until I hit control-c $ lspci -v | grep -A7 -i "audio" 00:0f.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio (rev a2) Subsystem: Dell Device 0224 Flags: bus master, 66MHz, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 23 Memory at dfff0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel -- 01:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device aab0 Subsystem: Diamond Multimedia Systems Device aab0 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 43 Memory at dfefc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: <access denied> Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel -- 03:0a.0 Audio device: Creative Labs SB X-Fi Subsystem: Creative Labs Device 6002 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 18 Memory at dbff4000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Memory at dbc00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=2M] Memory at d4000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64M] I/O ports at 8c00 [size=32] Capabilities: <access denied> Notice the Diamond Multimedia Systems Device - that seems to be my video card sound. My video card is Diamond multimedia. Also there's the weird NVIDIA device in there. That must either be a remnant of my now removed NVIDIA graphics card, or else some kind of on-board thing. Not sure which. $ killall pulseaudio This allows me to open system settings - sound. But the "Test Sound" button makes no sound And the output volume + mute controls are greyed / disabled at 0 volume. It also allows me to click on the sound control in the "task bar" (beside the clock), and a volume slider drops down, but it is disabled / greyed at 0 volume. $ find /lib/modules/uname -r | grep snd • T-SQL Tuesday #005: Reporting

- by Adam Machanic
This month's T-SQL Tuesday is hosted by Aaron Nelson of SQLVariations . Aaron has picked a really fantastic topic: Reporting . Reporting is a lot more than just SSRS. Whether or not you realize it, you deal with all sorts of reports every day. Server up-time reports. Application activity reports. And even DMVs, which as Aaron points out are simply reports about what's going on inside of SQL Server. This month's topic can be twisted any number of ways, so have fun and be creative! I'm really looking...(read more)

• Legal question.

- by Kjow
Hi all, a question bounces in my head from some time. Copyright laws are different by nation to nation, but generally which is the border line to break a copyright? Suppose to make a game that is very similar to an other come out in the past, e.g. a Pacman clone or a Space Invaders clone, but nothing from original titles are grabbed and maybe they're not made in 2d, but in 3d. The titles aren't "Pacman clone - the return" or "Space Invaders - they did it again", and not also "Pocman" or "Space Evaders" (maybe this last could be fun for some "creative financers" that need to escape from earth :D). Finally suppose to call these some thing like "Popcorn, fruit and ghosts" (or the acronym: "PFG") and "Kill all enemy" (or the acronym: "KAE"). In this case (not grab- all self-made) and no references to original titles, but with a game that feels very similar to "ispiration ones"... they could be sold to somewhere like "Valve's Steam"? Regards, Kjow

• Microsoft Townhall, An Example for Azure and MVC

- by Shaun
Microsoft just released an example named Microsoft Townhall which was built and deployed on Azure. It uses ASP.NET MVC as its webiste framework and the SQL Azure plus LinqToSQL as its the database and the ORM framework. You can download the source code at the MSDN Code Gallery. Basides the Azure it might be more useful to us to learn how they utilized ASP.NET MVC. Just a very quickly review I found it utilized the Enterprise Library Unity as the main IoC container for controllers, services and repositories and customized a lot of ModelBinders, Filters, etc. Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • Found a good tool for jQuery Coding – jQueryPad

- by Shaun
Just found a good (looks like) tool for jQuery coding and debugging from the appinn.com (Chinese) named jQueryPad by Paul Stovell. With it we don’t need to switch between the visual studio and the browser when coding and debugging. There’s only one main screen where we can type the HTML and jQuery code and just press F5 to see the result in the bottom frame. .NET Frameworks 3.5 is required. Hope this helps. • Douglas Adams Describes the Invention of the Ebook [Video]

- by Jason Fitzpatrick
In 1993, Douglas Adams–of The Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy fame–lent his creative talent and voice to explaining the invention of the Ebook. The audio segment was produced almost 20 years ago by Adams to both promote his own work in digital format and the work of early ebook publisher Voyager Expanded Books. You may notice Adams refers to their product as a PowerBook, a name they kept until they heard Apple would be releasing a laptop with the same name (from then on the product was simply referred to as Expanded Books). The thoroughly modern video accompanying Adams concise and entertaining description of book history is an animation courtesy of U.K. designer Gavin Edwards, which he submitted to a contest hosted by The Literary Platform intended to match a clever animation with Adam’s monologue.
