  The defaults in Rails with ActiveRecord is beautiful when you are just getting started and are created everything for the first time. But once you get into it and your database schema becomes a little more solidified, the things that would have been easy to do by relying on the conventions of Rails require a little bit more work.In my case, I had a form where there was a database column named “num_guests”, representing the number of guests. When the field fails to pass validation, the error messages is something likeNum guests is not a numberNot quite the text that we want. It would be better if it saidNumber of guests is not a numberAfter doing a little bit of digging, I found the human_attribute_name method. You can override this method in your model class to provide alternative names for fields. To change our error message, I did the followingclass Reservation ... validates_presence_of :num_guests ... HUMAN_ATTRIBUTES = { :num_guests = "Number of guests" } def self.human_attribute_name(attr) HUMAN_ATTRIBUTES[attr.to_sym] || super endendSince Rails 2.2, this method is used to support internationalization (i18n). Looking at it, it reminds me of Java’s Resource Bundles and Spring MVC’s error messages. Messages are defined based off a key and there’s a chain of look ups that get applied to resolve an error’s message.Although, I don’t see myself doing any i18n work in the near-term, it is cool that we have that option now in Rails.

• is struts2 Framework dead? if so, which direction to go from here?

  I've been working in struts2 framework for the past year and a half. As I look around SO it seems like struts2 questions get the least amount of hits. At first I thought it was because the SO community is not much into struts2, but this is the case in other forums as well. Only the struts2 mailing list is pretty active. I think struts2 is slowly becoming a dinosaur framework and I want to move on. I've dabbled a little with other stuff like RoR, Grails, Django, .NET MVC but I've never really committed and made a pact with myself to sit down and learn these. Maybe its the fact that I dont know the languages that these frameworks are built on. Spending a day or two with RoR makes me want to choke some of the JAR files and struts2 html tags and .NET MVC looks promising but not knowing c# ties me back. My question is, have you been on the same path? Did anyone used to do struts2 before and now changed to something new? What would you suggest I learn after Struts2? And lastly, as a developer how do you motivate yourself to learn a new framework, or a language? for me, just typing the code provided in the book is dead boring.

• Ruby on Rails - Static page as start page

  Hello! I am developing an app in RoR which has static and dynamic parts. The static portion is placed in the public/ folder of the app. Now if i have an index.html in my public folder then i will not be able to use the routes configured in my routes.rb The default configurations like map.connect /:controller/:action will not be usable if i have an index.html. So i removed the index html. Now i have a static page startpage.html in my public/ folder which has to be the starting page of the app. And the i have links in it for other static/dynamic pages. The RoR app is hosted in apache and i tried to configure the Virtual Host configuration by adding the DirectoryIndex param so that when ever a request comes for the site it will direct it to the startpage.html but still it takes me to the default controller that i have specified in routes.rb with map.root I dont want to add a dummy controller and action and create a view which has the startpage and configure routes.rb to use it as the root. What i am looking to do here is Basically startpage.html should be my first page in the app served as a static page from the public/ folder. This will then have links to other pages and controllers/actions Here i am not able to apache to redirect to the html page instead of passing on the control to rails application. Directory listing is also enabled by using Options Indexes but still no change. Any pointers anyone?

  I am implementing a simple RoR webpage that collect emails from visitors and store them as objects. I'm using it as a mini-project to try RoR and BDD. I can think of 3 features for Cucumber: 1. User submits a valid email address 2. User submits an existing email address 3. User submits an invalid email My question is, for scenarios 2 and 3, is it better to handle this via the controller? or as methods in a class? Perhaps something that throws errors if an instance is instantiated in sceanrio 2 or 3? Implementation is below, love to hear some code reviews in addition to answers to questions above. Thanks!   Can someone tell me why is this happening? I have created a social networking website using Ruby on Rails. This is my first time programming with RoR. I have a model named "Friendship" which contains an attribute "blocked" to indicate whether the user has blocked another user. When I run the following in IRB - friendship = u.friendships.where(:friend_id => 22).first IRB gives me - Friendship Load (0.6ms) SELECT `friendships`.* FROM `friendships` WHERE `friendships`.`user_id` = 17 AND `friendships`.`friend_id` = 22 LIMIT 1 => #<Friendship id: 33, user_id: 17, friend_id: 22, created_at: "2012-04-07 10:29:49", updated_at: "2012-04-07 10:29:49", blocked: 1> As u can see, the "blocked" attribute has value '1'. But when I run the following 1.9.2-p290 :030 > friendship.blocked => nil - it says, the value of blocked is 'nil' and not '1'. Why is this happening? This could be a very silly mistake but I am new to RoR, so kindly help me! I initially didn't include the accessor method for 'blocked'.. I tried that, and still its giving the same result..   My team is currently looking into hosting for RoR apps, and we're considering RailsPlayground, Linode and SliceHost. We haven't found anyone recommending rails playground, and web of trust seems to caution against it - http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/railsplayground.com I like the fact that they give you a sourcerepo account for free to host and track git repos, etc. The Questions: Is there any reason not to go with RailsPlayground?   I've recently really dived into Ruby/Rails and I'm falling in love. I have a gut feeling this might be something that could last for a while. What I've been missing is interaction with people who are as passionate about Ruby, Rails and things closely related to these. I live in a relatively small city, but was able to find five local people through a RoR website. Weekly meetups with Macs, beer and bro-love rushed through my mental theater. Seriously though, I have no clue how I could approach these people. I have their e-mail addresses. Any advice?

  i have seen through other questions on the topic but most are a bit old. I looking for a good editor for developing on PHP in Linux(ubuntu). Here is my requirements Basic editor features Free Light-Weight Syntax highlighting Code Folding (class,function,if/else/while/foreach block) Code completion Invalid Syntax/Error highlighting as you type Auto code intending Snippet support(pieces of custom or language specific codes that i can insert) Extendable support It would be great if it had the following Debugging support WYSIWYG Code formatting Framework support(cakephp/yii/zend/smarty) Testing support Todo Native look and feel(Gnome) Flex/ROR support is welcome but not a requirement Mysql support I have tried the following editors Netbeans - it bloated, resource hogging and doesnt not have a native look and feel. Eclipse is okay but i cant fold if/while blocks and slow. Gedit can be extended and i have tried it but still i could not fold code or show error. I currently use Geany but it doesn't inform me of syntax errors as i type. If you have ways to solve the problems with above editors they too are also welcome

• How do I explain to HR that my work experience is relevant even if it doesn't match the keywords in the job description?

  I am looking at a job with a great company and in a field that I really want to be in. Unfortunalty, what they want is someone with "experience with ASP (VB), T-SQL in a production environment." But I've never done anything except with FOSS tools: C, Ruby(straight and RoR), Perl, MySQL, et c. I'm thinking that I could probably pick up VB without much trouble (I took a class that used it on college, was impressed at how easy it was to construct Windows UIs, but I've never needed it) Is there any way that I can demonstrate that my experience is similar? What would equivalent experience be in the FOSS world?

• Help deploying using Capistrano to HostGator

  My company uses HostGator to host our web sites, and I'm having a heck of a time figuring out what my final steps are to get a functioning RoR app up there. I've got all the way up to configuring mongrel (I think?) and being able to run deploy:cold without any errors. However, I can't seem to get the app to show up in the designated CPanel area (HG says the name "current" is already reserved for another application), and I'm not sure which port was allowed for me to use. I've opened tickets with Customer Support just to be told that "You can't access the database with root"... Totally unrelated to my question... So I think I'm in the final stretch and if anyone has any insight or experience with HostGator, please cue me in.

• Best/Easiest Technology for a RESTful webservice [closed]

  So I'm going to be creating a phone app + website that will need to utilize a web service. Webservices are completely outside my domain so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Does anybody have any suggestions on the technology stack I should use? (mainly in terms of ease of use and reliability) So far what I've looked at are: RoR Python + Django + TastyPie Python + Flask Microsoft WCF 3.5 PHP + some framework I would rather not do anything with Java I'm leaning towards the Python + Django + TastyPie route as it seems like it would be easy to get up and going and learn in general. My only concern with it is the reliability of the libraries (feature breaking updates, abandonment, etc). Also I would prefer to create the website with the same framework so I wouldn't have to deal with learning and using two different ones. Any advice would be helpful, thanks.

• How much to charge Ruby on Rails Website [closed]

  I figured it be appropriate to ask this question on webmasters, over the stackoverflow site seeing as there are similar questions here. I am freelancing for a client in the Boston area, who has the html/css templates for their site made by another web designer. They are basically looking for someone to set up the template, and then make the backend so that a user can purchase music on their site (they are musicians). I am wondering then what would be an appropriate amount to charge them to develop such a system, I am a student, and this would be my 3rd Ruby on Rails project, but probably at least the 20 web design project I have been hired to do and I have other programming knowledge, Python, C, etc. I am thinking of suggesting that they pay 1000usd to set up such a system, but I don't know if this is appropriate. To me it seems justifiable given my experience, and the low end of RoR developers I have seen charging 25usd/hr all the way up to 150usd/hr. Any advice would be appreciated.

  I'm wondering how to change locale (UI gtk) inside local apps to ru_RU for example instead of en_US. Ror example i install chromium-browser inside client image chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get -y install chromium-browser ltsp-update-image --arch=i386 booted from thin client i see LDM in ru_RU lang login to x session (gnome) everything is in ru_RU but trying run ltsp-localapps chromium-browser and see chromium with en_US interface...BUT i need in RUSSIAN i've added file on both host (/etc/default/locale) and thin client image (/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/default/locale) with LANG=ru_RU.UTF-8 LANGUAGE=ru_RU.UTF-8 LC_ALL=ru_RU.UTF-8 but nothing changed lts.conf also has LDM_LANG=ru_RU.utf-8 in it... Is it possible to change lang of localapps?

• Too much to learn, dealing with overwhelming varieties of technologies [closed]

  I am about to graduate, and I am already working as a web developer in our library IT department. When I look at job postings I am absolutely overwhelmed by the sheer variety of technologies out there. Some companies care about math + algorithms + data structures. Some care about experiences in technology stack XYZ. SQL, css, html, frameworks, javascript, design patterns etc.. etc... etc... At some point I realized I just need to start at mastering a foundation to become employable at a better place and go from there. But the skill-set to get me in the doors varies and I just don't have time to learn everything. How do you deal with this issue? What is the essential stack to become employable? Say in php or ror arena. Perhaps a smarter move would be to move to a technology stack with less variety like .net?

  I have been programming ROR for about a year now, and I think I am ready to start working on a project for someone else. The problem is that job postings for contractors don't really tell you which specific tasks you should be able to do at different experience levels (in rails and other technologies), so I don't know where to pitch myself. I think I am somewhere between junior and mid-level, but who knows? So my question is: Which actual tasks should an junior programmer be able to do at, say, $35 an hour, which actual tasks should an intermediate programmer be able to do at, lets say, $75 an hour, and which actual tasks should an advanced programmer be able to do at, oh say, $140 an hour? One or two examples should suffice.

  My client needs a site customers can use to pay the membership fees and join. It should also track when old members need to pay again. There are some members that will not want to pay online and they want to be able to use the site to manage all payments. The CMS must be cheap to host online, potentially with something like GitHub/Heroku. I am experienced with PHP and RoR. I am using a CMS so once I am done with this project it is easy for them to update. After reading through different posts I think WordPress with an e-commerce Plugin may be the right solution. • SWFUpload with rails

  Hey. I try to use SWFUpload Javascript/Flash library for uploading files in my Rails (RoR) app. Upload works with standard form but with SWFUpload I get "HTTP Status: 422" error code. Can someone tell me how to fix that?
