  • PHP and Ruby: how to leverage both? and, is it worth it?

    - by dukeofgaming
As you might have noticed from the title, this is not a "PHP or Ruby", or a "PHP vs. Ruby" question. This is a question on how to leverage PHP + Ruby in the same business. I myself am a PHP developer, I love the language because of its convenience and I specially love the ecosystem of resources that surround it: Joomla, Drupal, Wordpress, Symfony2, Doctrine2, etc. However, the language itself can be a little disappointing sometimes. OTOH, Ruby looks like a very beautiful language and —from studying it superficially in several aspects— I could say it is leaner than Python as a language per se. However, from what I've seen there is pretty much only RoR making noise, and I don't like RoR so much (mainly because its model layer). As Co-CEO and CTO at my company I'm trying to think outside of the box since I want to start to focus on the human side of technology and see if its sane to use both PHP and Ruby. Here are some random thoughts: Ruby folk seem to be generally better suited programmers than PHP folk (in terms of averages), I know the previous statement is somewhat baloney because very good and well architected PHP can be written, but I'd say the Ruby programmer culture is better than PHP's. The thing about Ruby is that it seems better suited for rapid development, I don't really know if this is only the case for RoR, but I do know that there are certain practices (perhaps not so good) like monkey patching that let business needs be satified quicker. From a marketing point of view (yep, sometimes you need to leverage the marketing BS for the sake of your company) Ruby seems better while PHP carries some stigmas. PHP 5.4 is bringing traits, and that is better/cleaner than mixins. That could really make PHP as lean as Ruby —or more— for certain stuff. Now, concretely, my questions: Would a PHP programmer want to learn Ruby?, I know I do, but conversely, would a Ruby programmer want to learn PHP?. What kinds of projects or situations would be better suited for Ruby that are not suited for PHP?. What is the actual ecosystem of Ruby?, aside from RoR, I have not seen other hyped technologies/frameworks (I've seen RSpec, but I confess being a total noob on what BDD really consists of and its implications). Supposing there are a certain type of projects ideal for Ruby, would there be a moment that its better to move it to PHP?. I know PHP can handle lots of stuff, but I've read that Ruby has its limitations when scaling (or is that RoR?, or is that baloney for both?). Finally and most importantly, would it be sane to maintain projects in two languages?, or is that just stupid. As I said, it looks like Ruby is leaner on the short term and that can make a project happen and succeed, but I'm not so sure about that on the long run. I'm looking for insights mainly from people that know well the strengths and weaknesses of the languages —preferably both of them— and Ruby's ecosystem in real practice, meaning: frameworks and applications like the ones I quoted from PHP's ecosystem. Best regards and thanks for your time.

  • json problems with making a ruby on rails application

    - by Prince Merdz
So I'm using Bitnami to learn Ruby on Rails. I have also previously tried the manual installation for ruby and rails and was met by the same problem so I thought I should try first the easy package deal of Bitnami. Anyway my problem with json is that it causes the bundle install to fail. First the auto bundle install that rails new does fails because of an ssl error. Which is easily solved by changing the source in the gemfile which is https to http. However when I try to bundle install it does another error when it tries to install json. • Why is this RMagick call generating a segmentation fault?

    - by Grant Heaslip
I've been banging my head against the wall for the better part of an hour trying to figure out what's going wrong here, and I'm sure (or rather hoping) it's something fairly obvious that I'm overlooking. I'm using Ruby 1.9.1, Sinatra 1.0, and RMagick 2.13.1. ImageMagick and RMagick are correctly installed and functional—I've successfully manipulated and saved images from irb. The relevant part of the params array (formatting changes for the sake of readability): {"admin_user_new_image_file"=> { :filename=>"freddie-on-shetland-pony.png", :type=>"image/png", :name=>"admin_user_new_image_file", :tempfile=>#<File:/var/folders/a7/a7pO5jMcGLCww9XBGRvWfE+++TI/-Tmp-/RackMultipart20100514-20700-o2tkqu-0>, :head=>"Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\"admin_user_new_image_file\"; filename=\"freddie-on-shetland-pony.png\"\r\nContent-Type: image/png\r\n" } } The relevant code: post "/admin/user/:account_name/image/new/" do if params[:admin_user_new_image_file][:tempfile] thumbnail = Magick::Image.read("png:"+params[:admin_user_new_image_file][:tempfile].path).first end end The error (line 229 is the line starting with • fresh_when in ruby not working with xml rendering

    - by Guilherme Silveira
    While trying to implement support for conditional GETting in a rest system, we have come across the fresh_when and stale? methods. The following code works fine with 304 and not further rendering: if stale?(:etag = resource, :last_modified = resource.updated_at.utc) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb } end end But accessing 1.xml will try to render the resource twice: if stale?(:etag => resource, :last_modified => resource.updated_at.utc) respond_to do |format| format.html # show.html.erb format.xml { render :xml => @order.to_xml(:controller => self, :except => [:paid_at]) } end end The error message: ActionController::DoubleRenderError in OrdersController#show Can only render or redirect once per action RAILS_ROOT: /Users/guilherme/Documents/ruby/restfulie-test Application Trace | Framework Trace | Full Trace /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:900:in render_without_benchmark' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/benchmarking.rb:51:in render' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:17:in ms' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:10:in realtime' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:17:in ms' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/benchmarking.rb:51:in render' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:1331:in send' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:1331:in perform_action_without_filters' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/filters.rb:617:in call_filters' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/filters.rb:610:in perform_action_without_benchmark' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/benchmarking.rb:68:in perform_action_without_rescue' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:17:in ms' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:10:in realtime' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/activesupport-2.3.4/lib/active_support/core_ext/benchmark.rb:17:in ms' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/benchmarking.rb:68:in perform_action_without_rescue' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/rescue.rb:160:in perform_action_without_flash' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/flash.rb:146:in perform_action' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:532:in send' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:532:in process_without_filters' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/filters.rb:606:in process' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:391:in process' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/base.rb:386:in call' /Library/Ruby/Gems/1.8/gems/actionpack-2.3.4/lib/action_controller/routing/route_set.rb:437:in `call' Any suggestions?   • RVM can't switch to Ruby 1.9.1

    - by Marco
I installed Ruby 1.8.7 through apt-get. I then installed 1.9.1 through RVM. Why can't RVM switch to the new version? Should I just set an alias for ruby=1.9.1? *running Debian

Possible Duplicate: Is there a canonical book on Ruby on Rails? I'm looking to learn Ruby on Rails. I already have a small background in Ruby and don't really need a book that covers both, as I ordered the Pickaxe Book a couple days ago. I recently read some of Beginning Ruby on Rails-Steven Holzner, but abandoned that after seeing multiple statements on SO about how terrible the code in it was, and also the fact that it used Rails 1...Just wondering, what is the best book for an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER in Rails?

  • Announcing Berkeley DB Java Edition Major Release

    - by Eric Jensen
Berkeley DB Java Edition 5.0 was just released. There are a number of new features, enhancements, and options in there that our users have been asking for. Chief among them is a new class called DiskOrderedCursor, which greatly increases performance of systems using spinning platter magnetic hard drives. A number of users expressed interest in this feature, including Alex Feinberg of LinkedIn. Berkeley DB Java Edition is part of Project Voldemort, a distributed key/value database used by LinkedIn. There have been many other improvements and optimizations. Concurrency is significantly improved, as is the performance of update and delete operations. New and interesting methods include Environment.preload, which allows multiple databases to be preloaded simultaneously. New Cursor methods enable for more effective searching through the database. We continue to enhance Berkeley DB Java Edition’s High Availability as well. One new feature is the ability to open a replicated node read-only when the master is unavailable. This can allow critical systems to continue offering some functionality, even during a network or master node failure. There’s a lot more in release 5.0. I encourage you to take a look at the extensive changelog yourself. As always, you can download the new release and try it out here: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/berkeleydb/downloads/index.html

  • Ruby / Rails - How to aggregate a Query Results in an Array?

    - by AnApprentice
Hello, I have a large data set that I want to clean up for the user. The data set from the DB looks something like this: ID | project_id | thread_id | action_type |description 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | yada yada yada yada yada 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | xxx 1 | 10 | 30 | comment | yada 313133 1 | 10 | 33 | comment | fdsdfsdfsdfsdfs 1 | 10 | 33 | comment | yada yada yada yada yada 1 | 10 | | attachment | fddgaasddsadasdsadsa 1 | 10 | | attachment | xcvcvxcvxcvxxcvcvxxcv Right now, when I output the above in my view its in the very same order as above, problem is it is very repetitive. For example, for project_id 10 & thread_id 30 you see: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada 10 - 30 - xxxxx 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada What I would like to learn how to do in ruby, is some how create an array and aggreate descriptions under a project_id and thread_id, so instead the output is: 10 - 30 - yada yada yada yada yada - xxxxx - yada yada yada yada yada Any advice on where to get started? This requirement is new for me so I would appreciate your thoughts on what you're thinking the best way to solve this is.Hopefully this can be done in ruby and not sql, as the activity feed is likely going to grow in event types and complexity. Thanks

  • Ruby Application Webroot Location

    - by Helius 06
I have inherited a ruby application at work and I am fairly new to ruby hosting environments. The application is hosted on a linux server but I am unable to find where the webroot is. I have looked for /var/www which is the webroot for apache on linux for other applications I have been working with. But that location doesn't exist on this server. I was looking through the folders on the server and got a feeling that it might be using Nginx+passenger. Could someone point me in the right direction where to look? Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Can we create desktop application with Ruby?

    - by RAJ ...
I know the Ruby on Rails framework is only for web development and not suitable for desktop application development. But if a ruby programmer wants to develop a desktop application, is it suitable and preferable to do it with Ruby only (not jRuby, as most of the tutorials are for jRuby)? If yes, please provide some good tutorials. I want to use linux as OS for development. Please suggest something, as I am a ruby developer and wants to develop desktop application.

  • Ruby on Rails: How do I remove a gem path? (I have two for some reason)

    - by sjsc
I'm looking to remove a gem path (/home/sjsc/.ge/ruby/1.8). For some reason, I have two, and I can't seem to install gems correctly. When I do "gem env", here's what I get: RubyGems Environment: - RUBYGEMS VERSION: 1.3.6 - RUBY VERSION: 1.8.7 (2009-06-12 patchlevel 174) [i486-linux] - INSTALLATION DIRECTORY: /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 - RUBY EXECUTABLE: /usr/bin/ruby1.8 - EXECUTABLE DIRECTORY: /usr/bin - RUBYGEMS PLATFORMS: - ruby - x86-linux - GEM PATHS: - /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8 - /home/sjsc/.gem/ruby/1.8 Any idea on how to remove the "/home/sjsc/.gem/ruby/1.8" from the "GEM PATHS"?

  • Ruby DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1.

    - by user297221
Hi guys. I am using rails 3 and at the moment i am writing tests for my application. I get this weird deprecation warning: DEPRECATION WARNING: You are using the old router DSL which will be removed in Rails 3.1. Please check how to update your routes file at: http://www.engineyard.com/blog/2010/the-lowdown-on-routes-in-rails-3/. (called from at /Users/jeljer/Dropbox/webCMS/config/environment.rb:6) Of course my routes file is this: WebCMS::Application.routes.draw do #... end but no luck. If I look at the place what it is pointing to in my enviroment.rb: WebCMS::Application.initialize! I did a gem cleanup without any luck. Does anybody have an idea? ps. i am using rvm with ruby 1.9.2

The following code snippet works fine in 1.8.7 on Mac OS X, but not in 1.8.6 on Ubuntu. Why? Is there a workaround? Works in 1.8.7: $ ruby --version ruby 1.8.7 (2009-06-08 patchlevel 173) [universal-darwin10.0] ltredgate15:eegl leem$ irb >> 6.times.map {'foo'} => ["foo", "foo", "foo", "foo", "foo", "foo"] >> But not in 1.8.6: # ruby --version ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 287) [i686-linux] Ruby Enterprise Edition 20090610 # irb irb(main):001:0> 6.times.map {'foo'} LocalJumpError: no block given from (irb):1:in `times' from (irb):1 irb(main):002:0> Why is there a difference? What's the workaround for 1.8.6?
