  • Rsyslog is not working properly, it does not log anything

    - by Victor Henriquez
    I'm running a Debian server and a couple of days ago my rsyslog started to behave very weird, the daemon is running but it doesn't seem to do anything. Many people use the system but I'm the only one with (legal) root access. I'm using the default rsyslogd configuration (if you think is relevant I'll attach it, but it's the one that comes with the package). After I rotated all the log files, they have remained empty: # ls -l /var/log/*.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jun 27 00:25 /var/log/alternatives.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/auth.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/daemon.log -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jun 27 00:25 /var/log/dpkg.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/kern.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/lpr.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/mail.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/user.log Any try to force a log writing does not have any effect: # logger hey # ls -l /var/log/messages -rw-r----- 1 root adm 0 Jun 26 13:03 /var/log/messages Lsof shows that rsyslogd does not have any log files opened: # lsof -p 1855 COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME rsyslogd 1855 root cwd DIR 202,0 4096 2 / rsyslogd 1855 root rtd DIR 202,0 4096 2 / rsyslogd 1855 root txt REG 202,0 342076 21649 /usr/sbin/rsyslogd rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 38556 32153 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libnss_nis-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 79728 32165 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libnsl-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 26456 32163 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libnss_compat-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 297500 1061058 /usr/lib/rsyslog/imuxsock.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 42628 32170 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libnss_files-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 22784 1061106 /usr/lib/rsyslog/imklog.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 1401000 32169 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libc-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 30684 32175 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/librt-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 9844 32157 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libdl-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 117009 32154 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libpthread-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 79980 17746 /usr/lib/libz.so.1.2.3.4 rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 18836 1061094 /usr/lib/rsyslog/lmnet.so rsyslogd 1855 root mem REG 202,0 117960 31845 /lib/i386-linux-gnu/ld-2.13.so rsyslogd 1855 root 0u unix 0xebe8e800 0t0 640 /dev/log rsyslogd 1855 root 3u FIFO 0,5 0t0 2474 /dev/xconsole rsyslogd 1855 root 4u unix 0xebe8e400 0t0 645 /var/spool/postfix/dev/log rsyslogd 1855 root 5r REG 0,3 0 4026532176 /proc/kmsg I was so frustrated that even reinstall the rsyslog package, but it still refuses to log anything: # apt-get remove --purge rsyslog # apt-get install rsyslog I thought someone had hacked the system, so run rkhunter, chkrootkit, unhide in an attempt to find hide processes / ports and nmap in a remote host to compare with the ports shown by netstat.   • Rotate haproxy logs

    - by Jagbir
    I tried few things but still not able to rotate haproxy logs efficiently. I need to rotate logs when log files crosses 500 MB size. Considering haproxy is serving large no. of static tcp connections, I can not restart haproxy process though a reload is doable. Daily haproxy log file size normally crosses 3 GB on my machine. Here's sample from one of newer machine where log file size is growing beyond limit set: ubuntu@server:/mnt/log/haproxy$ ls -lsh total 4.3G 85M -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 85M Jun 2 07:13 haproxy.log 2.9G -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 2.9G Jun 2 06:37 haproxy.log.1 460M -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 460M Jun 1 06:32 haproxy.log.2.gz 469M -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 469M May 31 06:42 haproxy.log.3.gz 384M -rw-r----- 1 syslog adm 384M May 30 06:49 haproxy.log.4.gz ubuntu@server:/mnt/log/haproxy$ cat /etc/logrotate.d/haproxy /mnt/log/haproxy/haproxy.log { missingok copytruncate notifempty rotate 50 size 500M compress delaycompress }

    I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64, activated the recommended Nvidia drivers, and I noticed my hard disk space is disappearing, I narrowed the culprit down to this: alex@alex-home:~$ ls -la .x* -rw------- 1 alex alex 4436076400 2010-11-19 22:35 .xsession-errors -rw------- 1 alex alex 10495 2010-11-19 21:46 .xsession-errors.old Any idea what this file is, why its so big, and why its growing? • Cronjob as root?

    - by Rob
    I'm having a bit of a problem with cronjobs for backups. I've set up the following in sudo crontab -e (not under personal account): 0 1 * * * /backups/dobackup /backups/dobackup contains this: #!/bin/sh touch ITRAN tar -cvpjf /backups/$(date +%d.%m.%Y)_backup.tar.bz2 --exclude=/backups --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/sys --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/media --exclude=/dev / The backup file is created, but the file ITRAN is not. Also, the backup file is vastly smaller than expected: -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 371620259 2012-06-21 12:39 21.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023211449 2012-06-22 18:00 22.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1512785 2012-06-23 01:00 23.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1023272455 2012-06-24 22:41 24.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 -rw-r--r-- 1 rjrudman root 1514027 2012-06-25 01:00 25.06.2012_backup.tar.bz2 The backups with much larger file sizes are created by manually running sudo /backups/dobackup. It seems the cronjob is failing at some point.. but I have no idea how to debug this issue or where to start. Any ideas? Running ubuntu 10.04

  • How can I upload to a PPA without .changes file?

    - by espectalll123
    So, I'm developing an app for the Ubuntu Showdown, and as quickly is still very buggy (I had problems using it), I decided to do my app entirely from scratch, using Python/GTK+3. I've done my app and I've just packaged it just using only fakebuild dkpg-deb --build. The problem is that I can't create a .source file, as I don't have a changelog file and the debian folder cannot be used in debuild, as is uncorrectly organized. • Did something just get borked with glibc/perl/irssi?

    I was using irssi about 30 minutes ago now on Ubuntu server 12.04. Everything was perfectly fine and then all of the sudden something happened (my guess is a power failure). • How to create a shared folder using command line on a server

    - by sadmicrowave
    After following the tutorial here I ran into a problem. Here is what I did. On my server I installed nfs-kernel-server and edited the /etc/exports file to include the folder I want to share: /var *(rw,sync) On my client machine I edited my fstab file to include share: //128.251.xxx.xxx/var/ ~/uslonsweb003 nfs #username=[username],password=[password], 0 0 Entered command: sudo mount -a which gives this error: mount.nfs: remote share not in 'host:dir' format Where did I go wrong with this setup? Also if there is a better way (using command line) to setup a folder share on an Ubuntu 10.10 server that will be accessed by other linux and windows machines please let me know. UPDATE: The mapped drive is now not letting me create,edit,delete files or folders (readonly access) my configuration is as follows: client fstab file: 128.251.xxx.xxx:/var /home/coreyf/uslonsweb003 nfs rw,hard,intr, 0 0 server exports file: /var *(rw,no_root_squash,sync,no_subtree_check) UPDATE 2: Using Allans solution my drive mounted correctly however after putting rw,intr as my additional parameters I cannot create, edit and delete folders/files.

This is the actual situation: -rw-r----- 1 root adm 4,7M 5 mag 18:38 access.log -rw-r----- 1 root adm 5,2M 29 apr 05:44 access.log.1 -rw-r----- 1 root adm 473K 22 apr 05:45 access.log.2.gz -rw-r----- 1 root adm 605K 15 apr 05:44 access.log.3.gz -rw-r----- 1 root adm 588K 8 apr 05:44 access.log.4.gz The question is: Should I compress "access.log.1" and THEN launch logrotate ? Or logrotate will understand I removed the "delaycompress" option and fix things himself ?

  • How does the fstab 'defaults' option work? Is relatime recommended?

    - by hushs
    I know the fstab defaults option means this: rw,suid,dev,exec,auto,nouser,async. But what if I want to add one more option, for example relatime, should I still add defaults too or they are applied anyway? Is it needed to add at least one option? Some examples: 1. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults 0 2 2. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 0 2 3. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 defaults,relatime 0 2 4. UUID=bfb42838-d866-4233-9679-96e7536356df /media/data ext3 relatime 0 2 Is the (2) correct(no option at all)? Are the (1) and (2) the same? Are the (3) and (4) the same? Furthermore, I read in the Ubuntu Community Documentation that in Ubuntu 8.04 relatime was used as default for linux native file systems. Is it still true for 12.04? If yes, then why do I see this if I use the mount command: /dev/sda2 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) If no, why not? It isn't recommended to use relatime now? I just wanted to apply it to my non system partitions, it is a good idea? EDIT: I found an other command to list the mounted partitions and their options: cat /proc/mounts This is the result of a partition mounted with the defaults option in fstab: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 This is the output of mount for the same partition: /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw) And here is both result if the same partition mounted from Nautilus as a non-root user: /dev/sdb2 /media/adat ext3 rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,errors=continue,barrier=1,data=ordered 0 0 /dev/sdb2 on /media/adat type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=udisks) So it looks like relatime is used if we mount an ext partition in 12.04. So it is unneeded to add it manually. So my problem is broadly solved. But I still can't see why the options that should be in the defaults are not listed even with the cat /proc/mounts. Maybe there is a third and even better method to list the partition mount options :)

  • using 'ar' tool in Alchemy

    - by paleozogt
    I've found that if you specify a path to Alchemy's 'ar' tool, it won't create the 'l.bc' file necessary to link the library. For example, here is the case when I don't specify a path (it works): asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ echo 'int main() { return 42; }' > testmain.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ echo 'int test1() { return -1; }' > test1.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ echo 'int test2() { return 1; }' > test2.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ g++ -c testmain.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ g++ -c test1.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ g++ -c test2.cpp asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ ar cr libtest.a test1.o test2.o asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ g++ testmain.cpp libtest.a llvm-ld, "-o=".(98237.achacks.o = "98237.achacks.exe"), -disable-opt -internalize-public-api-list=_start,malloc,free,__adddi3,__anddi3,__ashldi3,__ashrdi3,__cmpdi2,__divdi3,__fixdfdi,__fixsfdi,__fixunsdfdi,__fixunssfdi,__floatdidf,__floatdisf,__floatunsdidf,__iordi3,__lshldi3,__lshrdi3,__moddi3,__muldi3,__negdi2,__one_cmpldi2,__qdivrem,__adddi3,__anddi3,__ashldi3,__ashrdi3,__cmpdi2,__divdi3,__qdivrem,__fixdfdi,__fixsfdi,__fixunsdfdi,__fixunssfdi,__floatdidf,__floatdisf,__floatunsdidf,__iordi3,__lshldi3,__lshrdi3,__moddi3,__muldi3,__negdi2,__one_cmpldi2,__subdi3,__ucmpdi2,__udivdi3,__umoddi3,__xordi3,__subdi3,__ucmpdi2,__udivdi3,__umoddi3,__xordi3,__error /Users/asimmons/Development/alchemy-darwin-v0.5a/avm2-libc/lib/avm2-libc.l.bc /Users/asimmons/Development/alchemy-darwin-v0.5a/avm2-libc/lib/avm2-libstdc++.l.bc, test.l.bc 98237.achacks.o 98237.achacks.swf, 5593510 bytes written asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ ls -l total 10992 -rwxr-xr-x 1 asimmons staff 5593575 Apr 9 17:44 a.exe -rw------- 1 asimmons staff 1284 Apr 9 17:43 libtest.a -rw-r--r-- 1 asimmons staff 672 Apr 9 17:43 test.l.bc -rw-r--r-- 1 asimmons staff 27 Apr 9 17:43 test1.cpp -rwxr-xr-x 1 asimmons staff 536 Apr 9 17:43 test1.o -rw-r--r-- 1 asimmons staff 26 Apr 9 17:43 test2.cpp -rwxr-xr-x 1 asimmons staff 536 Apr 9 17:43 test2.o -rw-r--r-- 1 asimmons staff 26 Apr 9 17:43 testmain.cpp -rwxr-xr-x 1 asimmons staff 552 Apr 9 17:43 testmain.o asimmons-mac:test asimmons$ And here is an example where I do specify a path (it doesn't work). Notice how in the first example, 'test.l.bc' was generated alongside libtest.a. But in the second example test.l.bc was not generated. Where did it go? This is a contrived example, but in the project I'm trying to build with alchemy the make scripts generate libraries in full paths and then refer to them that way. It seems that alchemy's 'ar' tool is broken if you try to generate a library anywhere other than '.'. Has anyone else seen this? Is there a workaround? fyi, I've also posted this question on the Alchemy formus.

  • How Do I Secure WordPress Blogs Against Elemento_pcx Exploit?

    - by Volomike
    I have a client who has several WordPress 2.9.2 blogs that he hosts. They are getting a deface kind of hack with the Elemento_pcx exploit somehow. It drops these files in the root folder of the blog: -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 default.htm -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 default.php -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.asp -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.aspx -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.htm -rw-r--r-- 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.html -rwxr-xr-x 1 userx userx 1459 Apr 16 04:25 index.php* It overwrites index.php. A keyword inside each file is "Elemento_pcx". It shows a white fist with a black background and the phrase "HACKED" in bold letters above it. We cannot determine how it gets in to do what it does. The wp-admin password isn't hard, but it's also not very easy either. I'll change it up a little to show you what the password sort of looks like: wviking10. Do you think it's using an engine to crack the password? If so, how come our server logs aren't flooded with wp-admin requests as it runs down a random password list? The wp-content folder has no changes inside it, but is run as chmod 777 because wp-cache required it. Also, the wp-content/cache folder is run as chmod 777 too.

  • Dash (-) in directory listing

    I've Googled around for this to no avail, I'm sure its just something simple but I have not been able to figure this out perhaps because searching in Google or SF for a "-" can be problematic. I had a strange directory listing show up the other day in my git repository within Drupal. Listing my sites directory looks like this: -sh-4.1$ ls -al total 52 drwxr-xr-x 5 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 6 16:15 . drwxr-xr-x 24 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 16:22 .. -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 24271 Dec 6 15:57 – drwxrwxr-x 4 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:53 all drwxr-xr-x 3 (hide) (hide) 4096 Sep 17 11:54 default drwxrwxr-x 8 (hide) (hide) 4096 Dec 11 17:40 .git -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 476 Sep 17 11:53 .gitignore -rw-rw-r-- 1 (hide) (hide) 81 Sep 17 11:53 README.md This "-" file cannot be opened and does not appear to be a symlink, although when I execute "cd -" I get this: -sh-4.1$ cd - /home/sites/dev1.(hide).com That is coincidentally or not the users home directory, and the site's root directory. The other strange this is this entry does not show up for any other user browsing this same directory. Nor does it show up for other users period in their Git directories. The entry cannot be removed via RM. Running Centos 6.2 by the way...

Just doing lvextend on the host and resize2fs from the guest does not seem to be enough.

  • procmail don't execute php script

    - by Phliplip
    Hi, I have setup a kannel SMS gateway on my FreeBSD 7.2 - the service works great. I'm now trying to setup a email2sms feature. For this i have created a system user called kannel and all mails are forwarded to this user. In the home dir of kannel i have the following files. -rw-r--r-- 1 kannel kannel 81B 17 jan 09:50 .procmailrc lrwxr-x--- 1 root kannel 58B 14 jan 13:24 email2sms.php @ -> some-what-some-where -rw-rw-rw- 1 root kannel 5,8K 17 jan 09:52 log.email2sms -rw------- 1 kannel kannel 1,3K 17 jan 09:50 procmail.log -rw-r----- 1 root kannel 606B 14 jan 13:28 rawmail.txt The file email2sms.php is a symlink to the a php script (ZendFramework Application) that takes the email from STDIN, and uses ZendFramework to parse that mail into an object. It then do a http request to the SMS gateway. The php-script works. Content of .procmailrc LOGFILE=$HOME/procmail.log VERBOSE=yes :0 | php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms From last sent email i have this in procmail.log procmail: [97744] Mon Jan 17 09:50:40 2011 procmail: [97744] Mon Jan 17 09:50:40 2011 procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER= php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms" procmail: Executing " php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms" procmail: Notified comsat: "kannel@:/home/user/kannel/ php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms" From [email protected] Mon Jan 17 09:50:40 2011 Subject: asdf as Folder: php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms 2600 But there is no new output to log.email2sms, and the script should output the subject of the email. If i sudo as the kannel user and pipe a file with raw email to the script, it executes just fine. [root@webserver /home/user/kannel]# /home/user/kannel/ sudo -u kannel cat rawmail.txt | php email2sms.php >> log.email2sms And the command outputs to log.email2sms as desired. Any ideas guys?

  • Determining the Source of a Given File System Mount on Unix [migrated]

    - by phobos51594
    Background Recently I have run into a bit of a snag on my home FreeBSD server. I recently upgraded it to the latest stable release, and I have noticed some strange behavior with the /var partition. Originally, I had the system configured such that /var had its own partition with /var/run and /var/log in memory disks (/tmp, too). After the upgrade, I notice there is a new, fourth memory disk mounting directly to /var that I had not set up manually and is not in my fstab. It is only 28 megs or so in size and is causing problems when trying to update my ports collection. The ramdisk mounts atuomagically at boot and cannot be unmounted while in multi-user mode. If I drop to single user mode, I am able to unmount it without issue, however rebooting causes it to pop right back up. System specifications have been included at the end of the post. Question Is there any way to determine exactly what is mounting a given memory disk (or any filesystem, for that matter) after it has been mounted? Alternately, does anybody have any ideas what might have caused the new /var ramdisk to pop up? Since checksecurity runs in /etc/cron.daily i wondered why i only get that email now. Is this a bug?

  • "No such file or directory"?

    - by user1509541
    Ok, so I have a VDS laying around, and I thought I would turn it into a TF2 game server. When I connect to my server through PuTTY, and use wget to download the package "hldsupdatetool.bin" from Steampowered.com. I go to run it and it says "No such file or directory found". When I use "ls" to see what files are in directory, it lists "hldsupdatetool.bin" as being in the directory. So, why is it saying it's not there? This has been a headache for the past 2 days. It's returning: root@10004:~# wget http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin --2012-07-08 06:04:49-- http://www.steampowered.com/download/hldsupdatetool.bin Resolving www.steampowered.com... 208.64.202.68 Connecting to www.steampowered.com|208.64.202.68|:80... connected.
