• How to keep groups when pulling with git

  I have a staging site that is a working directory of a git repository. How to set up git to let a developer pull out a branch or release without changing the group of the modified files? An example. Let's say I have two developers, robin and david. They are both in git-users group, so initially they can both have write permissions on site.php. -rw-rw-r-- 1 robin git-users 46068 Nov 16 12:12 site.php drwxrwxr-x 8 robin git-users 4096 Nov 16 14:11 .git After robin-server1$ git pull origin master: -rw-rw-r-- 1 robin robin 46068 Nov 16 12:35 site.php drwxrwxr-x 8 robin git-users 4096 Nov 16 14:11 .git And david do not have write permissions on site.php, because the group changed from 'git-users' to 'robin'. From now on, david will get a permission denied, when he tries to pull to this repository.

• Logrotate Successful, original file goes back to original size

  Has anyone had any issues with logrotate before that causes a log file to get rotated and then go back to the same size it originally was? • Log rotation with automatic *.log file discovery

  I am hosting several websites which each of run their own Python process and write *.log output files, but the directory structure is not standardized. Does any existing tools offer this kind of log file discovery and rotation capabilities, without manually specifying each file? If not... then just write a shell script which generates the logrotate conf?

• How to setup ssh's umask for all type of connections

  I've been searching for a way to setup OpenSSH's umask to 0027 in a consistent way across all connection types. By connection types I'm referring to: sftp scp ssh hostname ssh hostname program The difference between 3. and 4. is that the former starts a shell which usually reads the /etc/profile information while the latter doesn't. In addition by reading this post I've became aware of the -u option that is present in newer versions of OpenSSH. However this doesn't work. I must also add that /etc/profile now includes umask 0027. Going point by point: sftp - Setting -u 0027 in sshd_config as mentioned here, is not enough. If I don't set this parameter, sftp uses by default umask 0022. This means that if I have the two files: -rwxrwxrwx 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 execute -rw-rw-rw- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 read-write When I use sftp to put them in the destination machine I actually get: -rwxr-xr-x 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 execute -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 read-write However when I set -u 0027 on sshd_config of the destination machine I actually get: -rwxr--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 execute -rw-r--r-- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 read-write which is not expected, since it should actually be: -rwxr-x--- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 execute -rw-r----- 1 user user 0 2011-01-29 02:04 read-write Anyone understands why this happens? scp - Independently of what is setup for sftp, permissions are always umask 0022. I currently have no idea how to alter this. ssh hostname - no problem here since the shell reads /etc/profile by default which means umask 0027 in the current setup. ssh hostname program - same situation as scp. In sum, setting umask on sftp alters the result but not as it should, ssh hostname works as expected reading /etc/profile and both scp and ssh hostname program seem to have umask 0022 hardcoded somewhere. Any insight on any of the above points is welcome. EDIT: I would like to avoid patches that require manually compiling openssh. The system is running Ubuntu Server 10.04.01 (lucid) LTS with openssh packages from maverick. Answer: As indicated by poige, using pam_umask did the trick. The exact changes were: Lines added to /etc/pam.d/sshd: # Setting UMASK for all ssh based connections (ssh, sftp, scp) session optional pam_umask.so umask=0027 Also, in order to affect all login shells regardless of if they source /etc/profile or not, the same lines were also added to /etc/pam.d/login. EDIT: After some of the comments I retested this issue. At least in Ubuntu (where I tested) it seems that if the user has a different umask set in their shell's init files (.bashrc, .zshrc,...), the PAM umask is ignored and the user defined umask used instead. Changes in /etc/profile did't affect the outcome unless the user explicitly sources those changes in the init files. It is unclear at this point if this behavior happens in all distros.

• XCP vm created via xl create doesn't show up in Xencenter neither in xe vm-list

  i am running XCP 1.4.90.530.170661 and i have many PV guests running and created via XenCenter. • vsftp hangs at "150 Here comes the directory listing."

  In a vsftpd server enviroment, shared various directories from nfs mountpoints, I can log in without problem, but when I send the first "ls", the vsftp give me the directory listing: lftp [email protected]:~ ls -rw-rw-rw- 1 1160 1016 392 Jun 06 09:28 test.gif but not give me the shell again (lftp client). In the server log I can see that the last message is: "150 Here comes the directory listing." Why happend this?

• Is there a way to 'include' a separate file in /etc/hosts?

  Is there any way to 'include' another file within the /etc/hosts file? Particularly I want to include a non-protected (-rw-rw-rw) file so I can easily edit it in something like TextMate without having to issue sudo vi /etc/hosts I'm on OS X, but as far as I know, this should be relevant in other *nix OSs.

• NFS host is not exporting the "share"

  I have a NFS Server: usanfsd01 And a remote machine: usafssd01 I tried mounting a directory from usafssd01 onto usanfsd01 by adding the following line to /etc/fstab as root usanfsdo1:/home/dblogs /home/data/dblogs nfs rw 0 0 And when I run the following command to see if NFS is exporting the share, it's not shown showmount -e usanfsdo1 Can someone please help? Also, a point of interest would be there is another mount that works on the same servers and thats defined as below in the /etc/fstab usanfsdo1:/home/files /home/data/files nfs rw 0 0 /etc/exports /nfs/home/dblogs 'IPADDRESS'(rw,no_root_squash)

• Auto-mount in fstab no longer working until manually running 'sudo mount -a'

  I have 3 SMB shared drives I need to connect to for work purposes. I had Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick and had all my drives loaded into fstab to be auto-mounted. Everything worked fine for a while but just before I upgraded to 11.04 Natty, the fstab auto-mount stopped working. Unfortunately I don't know what changed I made to my machine or what update installed that made this occur. /etc/fstab {snip} //192.168.7.3/apache_proj/ /home/brett/Desktop/apache smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //192.168.7.3/apache_54321/ /home/brett/Desktop/54321 smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //freenas.local/shared/ /home/brett/Desktop/shared smbfs guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 //lamp/www/ /home/brett/Desktop/lamp smbfs username={snip},password={snip},rw,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 When the machine boots, I run this command to get them to mount: $ sudo umount /home/brett/Desktop/54321 /home/brett/Desktop/shared /home/brett/Desktop/apache; sudo mount -a [sudo] password for brett: umount: /home/brett/Desktop/54321: not mounted umount: /home/brett/Desktop/shared: not mounted umount: /home/brett/Desktop/apache: not mounted Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' Warning: mapping 'guest' to 'guest,sec=none' mount error: could not resolve address for lamp: No address associated with hostname (I run that umount as a just-in-case). I looked through dmesg and some error logs and couldn't see why fstab was failing on my mounts. I see that my 'lamp' directive is failing, but that's because the machine is currently down.

• Oracle Linux Tips and Tricks: Using SSH

  Out of all of the utilities available to systems administrators ssh is probably the most useful of them all. Not only does it allow you to log into systems securely, but it can also be used to copy files, tunnel IP traffic and run remote commands on distant servers. It’s truly the Swiss army knife of systems administration. Secure Shell, also known as ssh, was developed in 1995 by Tau Ylonen after the University of Technology in Finland suffered a password sniffing attack. Back then it was common to use tools like rcp, rsh, ftp and telnet to connect to systems and move files across the network. The main problem with these tools is they provide no security and transmitted data in plain text including sensitive login credentials. SSH provides this security by encrypting all traffic transmitted over the wire to protect from password sniffing attacks. One of the more common use cases involving SSH is found when using scp. Secure Copy (scp) transmits data between hosts using SSH and allows you to easily copy all types of files. The syntax for the scp command is: scp /pathlocal/filenamelocal remoteuser@remotehost:/pathremote/filenameremote In the following simple example, I move a file named myfile from the system test1 to the system test2. I am prompted to provide valid user credentials for the remote host before the transfer will proceed.  If I were only using ftp, this information would be unencrypted as it went across the wire.  However, because scp uses SSH, my user credentials and the file and its contents are confidential and remain secure throughout the transfer.  [user1@test1 ~]# scp /home/user1/myfile user1@test2:/home/user1user1@test2's password: myfile                                    100%    0     0.0KB/s   00:00 You can also use ssh to send network traffic and utilize the encryption built into ssh to protect traffic over the wire. This is known as an ssh tunnel. In order to utilize this feature, the server that you intend to connect to (the remote system) must have TCP forwarding enabled within the sshd configuraton. To enable TCP forwarding on the remote system, make sure AllowTCPForwarding is set to yes and enabled in the /etc/ssh/sshd_conf file: AllowTcpForwarding yes Once you have this configured, you can connect to the server and setup a local port which you can direct traffic to that will go over the secure tunnel. The following command will setup a tunnel on port 8989 on your local system. You can then redirect a web browser to use this local port, allowing the traffic to go through the encrypted tunnel to the remote system. It is important to select a local port that is not being used by a service and is not restricted by firewall rules.  In the following example the -D specifies a local dynamic application level port forwarding and the -N specifies not to execute a remote command.   ssh –D 8989 [email protected] -N You can also forward specific ports on both the local and remote host. The following example will setup a port forward on port 8080 and forward it to port 80 on the remote machine. ssh -L 8080:farwebserver.com:80 [email protected] You can even run remote commands via ssh which is quite useful for scripting or remote system administration tasks. The following example shows how to  log in remotely and execute the command ls –la in the home directory of the machine. Because ssh encrypts the traffic, the login credentials and output of the command are completely protected while they travel over the wire. This can be very powerful and useful for collecting information for reports, remote controlling systems and performing systems administration tasks using shell scripts. To make your shell scripts even more useful and to automate logins you can use ssh keys for running commands remotely and securely without the need to enter a password. You can accomplish this with key based authentication. The first step in setting up key based authentication is to generate a public key for the system that you wish to log in from. In the following example you are generating a ssh key on a test system. In case you are wondering, this key was generated on a test VM that was destroyed after this article. [rchase@test1 .ssh]$ ssh-keygen -t rsaGenerating public/private rsa key pair.Enter file in which to save the key (/home/rchase/.ssh/id_rsa): Enter passphrase (empty for no passphrase): Enter same passphrase again: Your identification has been saved in /home/rchase/.ssh/id_rsa.Your public key has been saved in /home/rchase/.ssh/id_rsa.pub.The key fingerprint is:7a:8e:86:ef:59:70:ef:43:b7:ee:33:03:6e:6f:69:e8 rchase@test1The key's randomart image is:+--[ RSA 2048]----+|                 ||  . .            ||   o .           ||    . o o        ||   o o oS+       ||  +   o.= =      ||   o ..o.+ =     ||    . .+. =      ||     ...Eo       |+-----------------+ Now that you have the key generated on the local system you should to copy it to the target server into a temporary location. The user’s home directory is fine for this. [rchase@test1 .ssh]$ scp id_rsa.pub rchase@test2:/home/rchaserchase@test2's password: id_rsa.pub                  Now that the file has been copied to the server, you need to append it to the authorized_keys file. This should be appended to the end of the file in the event that there are other authorized keys on the system. [rchase@test2 ~]$ cat id_rsa.pub >> .ssh/authorized_keys Once the process is complete you are ready to login. Since you are using key based authentication you are not prompted for a password when logging into the system.   [rchase@test1 ~]$ ssh test2Last login: Fri Sep  6 17:42:02 2013 from test1 This makes it much easier to run remote commands. Here’s an example of the remote command from earlier. With no password it’s almost as if the command ran locally. [rchase@test1 ~]$ ssh test2 'ls -la'total 32drwx------  3 rchase rchase 4096 Sep  6 17:40 .drwxr-xr-x. 3 root   root   4096 Sep  6 15:16 ..-rw-------  1 rchase rchase   12 Sep  6 15:17 .bash_history-rw-r--r--  1 rchase rchase   18 Dec 20  2012 .bash_logout-rw-r--r--  1 rchase rchase  176 Dec 20  2012 .bash_profile-rw-r--r--  1 rchase rchase  124 Dec 20  2012 .bashrc As a security consideration it's important to note the permissions of .ssh and the authorized_keys file.  .ssh should be 700 and authorized_keys should be set to 600.  This prevents unauthorized access to ssh keys from other users on the system.   An even easier way to move keys back and forth is to use ssh-copy-id. Instead of copying the file and appending it manually to the authorized_keys file, ssh-copy-id does both steps at once for you.  Here’s an example of moving the same key using ssh-copy-id.The –i in the example is so that we can specify the path to the id file, which in this case is /home/rchase/.ssh/id_rsa.pub [rchase@test1]$ ssh-copy-id -i /home/rchase/.ssh/id_rsa.pub rchase@test2 One of the last tips that I will cover is the ssh config file. By using the ssh config file you can setup host aliases to make logins to hosts with odd ports or long hostnames much easier and simpler to remember. Here’s an example entry in our .ssh/config file. Host dev1 Hostname somereallylonghostname.somereallylongdomain.com Port 28372 User somereallylongusername12345678 Let’s compare the login process between the two. • Diskless with Ubuntu 12.04

  I'm trying to setup a new diskless solution with ubuntu 12.04 without any success. I followed this howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DisklessUbuntuHowto But the initramfs seems not to be able to mount my nfs share. On my server side: My /etc/exports /srv/nfs4 192.168.0.0/24(fsid=0,rw,no_subtree_check) /srv/nfs4/nfsroot 192.168.0.0/24(rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,fsid=1,nohide,insecure,sync) I'm able to mount my nfs share on standard Ubuntu installation without any problem. I can mount my nfs on any client with those commands: mount 192.168.0.3:/nfsroot /mnt or mount 192.168.0.3:/srv/nfs4/nfsroot /mnt My /tftpboot/pxelinux.cfg/default config file is DEFAULT vmlinuz-3.5.0-25-generic root=/dev/nfs initrd=initrd.img-3.5.0-25-generic nfsroot=192.168.0.3:/nfsroot ip=dhcp rw I also tried DEFAULT vmlinuz-3.5.0-25-generic root=/dev/nfs initrd=initrd.img-3.5.0-25-generic nfsroot=192.168.0.3:/srv/nfs4/nfsroot ip=dhcp rw. • Ubuntu is not detecting my android device

  I am new to android. I have just downloaded and installed android sdk. Now when I run the application from eclipse, my device is not getting detected. I have googled and was brought up with this as my solution, but that also didn't worked.   Hi all I need to implemente a Java class which uses JNI to control a fiscal printer in XUbuntu 8.10 with sun-java6-jdk installed. The structure is the following: EpsonDriver.java loads libEpson.so libEpson is linked dynamically with EpsonFiscalProtocol.so ( provided by Epson, no source available ) and pthread I use javah to generate the header file, and the code compiles. Then I put the libEpson.so in $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/i386, and EpsonDriver.java uses an static initializar System.loadLibrary("libEpson") That part works, however, when I try to use any of the methods I get an unsatisfiedLinkError exception.   Is there a way to encrypt a folder, which is not in /home but even in a different partition, so only my user can access/read contained files? Alternatively, I would like to understand if it is possible to turn a complete ext4 partition into an encrypted volume, which would be mounted at user login. If possible, I would like to make the change without reinstalling Ubuntu. My PC has (mount output): /dev/sda1 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro) /dev/sda3 on /home type ext4 (rw) /dev/sda4 on /home/igor/Personale type ext4 (rw) sda4 is the partition containing folders I would like to protect. • Switch from encrypted partition to unencrypted (Error: cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available)

  I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 with an encrypted file system (from the alternate install CD: Guided Partitioning, LVM encrypted). Now I wanted to change this setup to have my root file system on an unencrypted partition. I had the following setup before: /dev/mapper/my-root on / type ext4 (rw,noatime,errors=remount-ro,commit=0,commit=0) /dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (rw,noatime) I backed up /, reformatted /dev/sda5 (which had contained the encrypted LVM device) to an ext3 partition, and restored / to that partition. I edited /etc/fstab, removed the line /dev/mapper/my-root / ..., and added the line: /dev/sda5 / ext3 noatime,rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0 0 1 I edited /etc/crypttab, and commented out the single entry. On reboot, I get the grub screen as usual, but then I get the message cryptsetup:evms_activate is not available, waiting for encrypted source device. I tried reinstalling Grub2 using a LiveCD with the ChRoot method, but that didn't make any difference. Why is Ubuntu still searching for an encrypted device?

  I have a WD MBWE II (White Strip Light) 2TB - (WD20000H2NC-00) Was working fine until a few days ago. I guess there was a power failure and after that I am unable to access the 'Public' or the 'Download' folder anymore. I have been searching for answers everywhere but came up empty handed. Web GUI still works, SSH works. I hooked up both the drives on my PC and UFS Explorer sees the drive. But so far I am unable to retrieve any of my data. I do not remember what RAID setting I used when I first got the drive. I can see from GUI that it is set as "Stripe". The drive contains 10 years of family pictures which I really do not want to loose. Sadly and stupidly, I didn't even keep a backup of this drive. Can somebody please help or point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your help. Disk Utility on Ubuntu reports 1405 bad sectors on one drive. How can I retrieve my data? Please help.
