    SharePoint 2010 Training: more information You know that ECB Menu in SharePoint 2007? Well in SharePoint 2010 you can very easily move it around on any column you wish. What you do is, open the view in SharePoint Designer, then you click on the field you wish to see the ECB menu in, then you will see a little floatie button with this on it ">", then, you click on that floatie, and it shows a little popup with 2 checkboxes in it. "Common xsl:value-of Tasks"- Show List Item Menu- Show Link To Item You check the "Show List Item Menu" checkbox, and off you go - now the ECB menu is available on the other column. Enjoy!     Requirements - SharePoint Foundation or SharePoint Server 2010 site - SharePoint Designer 2010 Steps 1. The first step in my process was to download from codeplex a starter masterpage http://startermasterpages.codeplex.com/ . 2. Once you downloaded the starter master page, open up your SharePoint site in SharePoint Designer 2010 and on the left in the “Site Objects “ area click on the folder “All Files” and drill down to catalogs >> masterpages . Once you are in the Masterpage folder copy and paste the _starter.master into this folder. 3. The first step in the customization process is to create your custom style sheet. To create your custom style sheet, click on the “all Files” folder and click on “Style Library.” Right click in the style library section and choose Style sheet. Once the style sheet is created, rename it style.css. Now open the style sheet you created in SharePoint Designer. 4. In this next step you will copy and paste the SharePoint core styles for the global navigation into your custom style sheet. The next step is to locate your Global Navigation control, make sure you are scrolled to the top in the code section and press “ctrl f” on the key board. This will pop up the find and replace tool. In the” find what field”, copy and paste ID="TopNavigationMenuV4” and then click find next. Once you find ID="TopNavigationMenuV4” , you should see the following block of code which is the global navigation control: ID="TopNavigationMenuV4" Runat="server" EnableViewState="false" DataSourceID="topSiteMap" AccessKey="" UseSimpleRendering="true" UseSeparateCss="false" Orientation="Horizontal" StaticDisplayLevels="1" MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="1" SkipLinkText="" CssClass="s4-tn" 9. In the global navigation code above you should see CssClass="s4-tn" . As an additional step you can replace "s4-tn" your own custom name like CssClass="MyNav" . If you can the name of the CSS class make sure you update your custom style sheet with the new name, example below: .MyNav{ padding:0px; margin:0px; } .MyNav ul.static{ white-space:nowrap; } 10. At this point you are ready to brand your global navigation. The next step is to modify your style.css with your customizations to the default SharePoint styles.   • Keyboard locking up in Visual Studio 2010

    One of the initiatives I’m involved with on the ASP.NET and Visual Studio teams is the Tactical Test Team (TTT), which is a group of testers who dedicate a portion of their time to roaming around and testing different parts of the product.  What this generally translates to is a day and a bit a week helping out with areas of the product that have been flagged as risky, or tackling problems that span both ASP.NET and Visual Studio.  There is also a separate component of this effort outside of TTT which is to help with customer scenarios and design. I enjoy being on TTT because it allows me the opportunity to look at the entire product and gain expertise in a wide range of areas.  This week, I’m looking at Visual Studio 2010 performance problems, and this gem with the keyboard in Visual Studio locking up ended up catching my attention. First of all, here’s a link to one of the many Connect bugs describing the problem: Microsoft Connect I like this problem because it really highlights the challenges of reproducing customer bugs.  There aren’t any clear steps provided here, and I don’t know a lot about your environment: not just the basics like our OS version, but also what third party plug-ins or antivirus software you might be running that might contribute to the problem.  In this case, my gut tells me that there is more than one bug here, just by the sheer volume of reports.  Here’s another thread where users talk about it: Microsoft Connect The volume and different configurations are staggering.  From a customer perspective, this is a very clear cut case of basic functionality not working in the product, but from our perspective, it’s hard to find something reproducible: even customers don’t quite agree on what causes the problem (installing ReSharper seems to cause a problem…or does it?). So this then, is the start of a QA investigation. If anybody has isolated repro steps (just comment on this post) that they can provide this will immensely help us nail down the issue(s), but I’ll be doing a multi-part series on my progress and methodologies as I look into the problem.

    Hmmm, wonder if I have the first VS 2010 RTM question? Anyway.. Installing the Windows Phone 7 SDK I get the following error Incompatible Products VC 10.0 Runtime .NET Framework 4 Multi-Targeting Pack Microsoft.NET Framework 4 Client Profile Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Extended This was reported as an issue with Beta 2 and the fix was to install the RC. Anyone know why it's incompatible with the RTM? Will we have to wait for an update to the SDK? Regards, Alex..

  • Stuck with Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 errors

    A ways back I installed Microsoft Visual Studio beta 2. Today I installed Visual Studio 2010 from Dreamspark (the one with the activation key baked in). This resulted in an install with no place to put an activation key (I don't have one anyways), but I still get the following error when I try to start it: Your Microsoft Visual Studio evaluation period has expired. You will need to upgrade Microsoft Visual Studio to the latest release. This didn't go away with a complete uninstall and reinstall, and I have no idea how to fix it. A quick internet search reveals that this is the error message from Beta 2 after the date at which the RTM version went live. I have a feeling that the message is due to some hanging registry entries (I went through the manual uninstall instructions here). Does anyone know how to find and eliminate all vestiges of Beta 2 or something?

Somasegar announced the availability of VS 2010 and .Net 4.  He writes the following: “This represents the biggest tools release from Microsoft in many years.”   Silverlight 4 coming later this week He also writes about Silverlight 4 - “I am also thrilled to say that Silverlight 4 will be released to the Web later this week.   • Turbo C++ to Visual Studio 2010 migration [closed]

    OK, based on my previous questions and your help., I have gone to install Visual Studio Express. But now problem is, the programs which I successfully code at home on Visual Studio don't run on Turbo C++ compiler at school (assuming I type the program instead of exporting code). Is there anything I can do? Also I am just learning basic syntax and data handling, loops, structures, arrays and all. But Visual Studio has auto completion and pretty typing (which may be advantageous) but crap for a beginner getting hold on to language. Sorry, if I have been unclear. But what should I do? This will make me lazy programmer and will reflect in my grades. Is there any other IDE, which I can use, very similar to Turbo C++ and able to run in Windows 7 in fullsreen mode.

  • SharePoint 2010 Hosting :: Error – HTTP Error 401.1 when Accessing Your SharePoint 2010 Site

    When attempting to view a MOSS (SharePoint) 2007 or SharePoint 2010 site locally from a Web Front End (WFE) you get an error stating: “HTTP Error 401.1 – Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.” I have noticed that this happens on Windows 2003/2008 Server SP1/SP2/R2 when using Host Headers and Alternate Access Mappings on a web application in MOSS 2007. If you can access the site from remote machines and cannot access the site from the server itself, then this might be your issue. For all my newer farm installs this includes SharePoint 2007 (MOSS) and SharePoint 2010. I use method number 2 on all SharePoint and SQL Servers in the farm. If you cannot access the web site locally or remotely from other machines then there is an issue with security on the site and/or possibly a Kerberos related security issue I implemented fix #2 listed in the following Microsoft KB Article. I implemented this fix on all servers in the MOSS 2007 Farm (WFE’s and Indexing/Search Server). If using method 1, you would add all Host Headers and Alternate Access Mappings for all web applications to the BackConnectionHostNames value, then you will be able to access the sites locally from the WFE’s. Microsoft KB Link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896861 Method 1: Specify Host Names Please follow this steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. 2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0 3. Right-click MSV1_0, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value. 4. Type BackConnectionHostNames, and then press ENTER. 5. Right-click BackConnectionHostNames, and then click Modify. 6. In the Value data box, type the host name or the host names for the sites that are on the local computer, and then click OK. 7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the IISAdmin service. Method 2: Disable the Loopback Check  Please follow this steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK 2. In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa 3. Right-click Lsa, point to New, and then click DWORD Value. 4. Type DisableLoopbackCheck, and then press ENTER. 5. Right-click DisableLoopbackCheck, and then click Modify. 6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK. 7. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart your computer. Give it try and good luck.

  • SharePoint 2010 Hosting :: Sending SMS Alerts in SharePoint 2010 Over Office Mobile Service Protocol (OMS)

    In this post, I want to share the exciting news of SharePoint's 2010 new feature. Finally it's possible to send SMS directly from SharePoint to mobile phones. The advantages of sending SMS instead of Email messages are obvious: SMS alerts or reminders that are received on mobile phones are more preferred than Email messages that can be lost in the mass of spam. The interface is standard as it's very similar to previous versions of the product. Adjustments are easy to do, simply enter the address of the Office Mobile Service (OMS) web-service which you want to use for sending messages, then specify the connection parameters. Further details on Office Mobile Service is available below. The Test Service button checks if OMS web-service is accessible using provided URL (user name and password are not verified). This check is needed because OMS web-service URL depends on the mobile operator and country. It's now possible to select the method of sending alerts in alerts settings. Email option is selected by default. Alerts delivery method is displayed in the list of existing alerts. Office Mobile Service (OMS) SharePoint 2010 uses exterior servers similar to SMTP servers for sending SMS alerts. However, Microsoft started development and promotion of their own protocol instead of using existing ones. That is how Office Mobile Service (OMS) appeared. This open protocol enables clients to send text and multimedia messages (mobile messages) remotely to the server which processes these messages and delivers them to mobile phones.  Typical scenario of utilizing this protocol is data transfer between computer application and mobile phone. The recipient can answer messages and the server in return will deliver the answer by SMTP protocol, i.e. by email.  Key quality of this protocol is that it's built on base of HTPP(S) and SOAP protocols.     This means that in fact SMS gateway must support typified web-service. What do you get from web-service? What you get is the ability to send SMS from any platform you want.  The protocol is being developed at the moment and version 0.2 from 08/28/2009 was available when the article was published.  For promotion of their protocol and simplifying server search, Microsoft represented web-service http://messaging.office.microsoft.com/HostingProviders.aspx that helps to receive the list of providers, which supports OMS protocol and message delivery to your operator.  All you need to do is decide which provider to use, complete the agreement, then adjust the SharePoint connection parameters and start working.  Some providers advertise themselves not only for clients but for mobile operators as well.   • Visual Studio Shortcut: Surround With

    I learned a new Visual Studio keyboard shortcut today that is really awesome; the “Surround With” shortcut.  You can trigger the Surround With context menu by pressing the Ctrl-K, Ctrl-S key combination when on a line of code. Ctrl-K, Ctrl-S means to hold down the Control key and then press K and then while still holding down the Control key press S. Here is where this comes in handy: You type a line of code and then realize you need to put it within an if statement block. So you type “if” and hit tab twice to insert the if statement code snippet.  Then you highlight the previous line of code that you typed, and then either drag and drop it into the if-then block or cut and paste it.  That is not too bad but it is a lot of extra key clicks and mouse moves. Now try the same with the Surround With keyboard shortcut.  Just highlight that line of code that you just typed and press Ctrl-K, Ctrl-S and choose the if statement code snippet, hit tab, and POW!... you are done!  No more code moving/indenting required. Here is what the Surround With context menu looks like: Just up or down arrow inside the drop down list to the code snippet that you want to surround your currently selected text with.  Did I mention this is AWESOME! Now it is so simple to surround lines of code with an if-then block or a try-catch-finally block... things that usually took several key clicks and maybe one or two mouse moves. And this works in both Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2010 which means it has been around for a long time and I never knew about it.   Technorati Tags: Visual Studio Keyboard Shortcut

    Error 7 The type 'System.Web.Routing.RouteValueDictionary' exists in both 'c:\Program Files\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\.NETFramework\v4.0\System.Web.dll' and 'c:\WINNT\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Web.Routing\3.5.0.0__31bf3856ad364e35\System.Web.Routing.dll' c:\Projects\VS\solutionfolder\projectfolder\Views\group\List.aspx 44 ProjectName The project utilizes T4MVC.tt if that is relevant. Also Visual studio 2010 ultimate. I did not upgrade the target .net framework to 4.0 because my host will not support this for ~24 hours. I have a .Tests project in the same solution that says it is targeting .net 4.0 but it still won't build even with that unloaded, same message.

    I have around 50 projects in Visual Studio 2005 that I am building a new development machine for and I'd like to slowly move those projects to VS 2008 but also have 2010 available for select new projects. Can this work? Are there any gotchas for this sort of setup? Any general advice for running multiple versions of Visual Studio on the same system would be greatly appreciated. Specifically related to managing a controlled migration of projects to new versions but being able to selectively keep some on old versions.

  • Program error trying to generate Outlook 2013 email from Visual Basic 2010 [on hold]

    I am using vb to send emails through outlook. Currently we have a mix of outlook versions at our office: 2010 and 2013 with a mix of 32 bit and 64 bit (a mess, I know). The code I have works well for Outlook 2010: Private Sub btnEmail_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnEmail.Click CreateMailItem() End Sub Private Sub CreateMailItem() Dim application As New Application Dim mailItem As Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MailItem = CType(application.CreateItem( _ Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlItemType.olMailItem), Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.MailItem) 'Me.a(Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlItemType.olMailItem) mailItem.Subject = "This is the subject" mailItem.To = "[email protected]" mailItem.Body = "This is the message." mailItem.Importance = Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.OlImportance.olImportanceLow mailItem.Display(True) End Sub However, I cannot get this to work for 2013. I have referenced the version 15 dll for 2013 and it seems to be backward compatible, but when I try to use the above code for 2013 (it is 64 bit) it says it cannot start Microsoft Outlook. A program error has occured. This is happening on the application Dim statement line. I have tried googling around but there doesn't seem to be much out there referencing 2013 but I feel that the problem here probably has more to do with 64 bit than the software version.   • Branded Application Pages (layouts pages) in SharePoint 2010

    Ad:: SharePoint 2007 Training in .NET 3.5 technologies (more information). Application pages are now branded by default in SharePoint 2010. WOOHOO!!! The DynamicMasterPageFile attribute in SharePoint 2010 master pages allows application pages start using the site’s master page instead of the application master page. If you want backwards compatibility with SharePoint 2007, i.e. you want unbranded application pages, here is what you can do, a) You can change the MasterPageReferenceEnabled property to false in your SPWebApplication object, orb) Go to central administration\application management\manage web application\select your web app … go to the ribbon, look for general settings\general settings, and detach application pages from the site’s master page. I don’t see why you’d ever wanna do that, but hey if you want to .. go for it. This article was first published on blah.winsmarts.com. Stealing content is not cool. Safeguarded application pages Now for the fine print, there is something called as “Safeguarded application pages” in SP2010. These are pages, that IF IN CASE your custom master page screws up, they will automatically revert to use a master page that is guaranteed to work in the _layouts folder. Now that’s nice!
