  • How to accept email *only* from white-listed addresses in Gmail? [migrated]

    - by Mawg
I only want to accpet email from two addresses, the rest I want to delete immediately, unseen. I know how to make fileers and I can whitelist those two addresses. If I make 3 filter, in this order; 1) from [email protected] move to inbox, never mark as spam 2) from [email protected] move to inbox, never mark as spam 3) from *@*.* delete immediately, never move to trash can I be guaranteed that that will do what I want? For instance, can I be sure that the filters are executed in that order? I dont want to lose amy mail from those two adresses.

  • How Can I Edit Google Chrome's 'History Provider Cache' File?

    - by dissolved
I'm interested in editing (not completely deleting) contents of some of Google Chrome's cache files. In particular, the 'History Provider Cache' (found in ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default on Mac). As this other question suggests, it appears to simply be a SQLite file. Unfortunately, when I try to open it using a SQLite browser (MesaSQLite) I'm asked for an encryption key. So, I'd welcome any suggestions on how to either (1) determine the encryption key, or (2) an alternate way to edit this file. The end goal is to be able to remove specific annoying suggestions in the Omnibar. I've read countless other techniques, but none seem to remove suggestions that have the clock icon next to it. Some say deleting this file entirely will do the trick (and I imagine it will), but I don't wish to trash my entire browsing history. I find most of the suggestions to be useful and helpful, and I'd like to preserve that.

  • Why does deleting from the command line take significantly less time than from a GUI?

    - by Jordan Plahn
So this is probably the dumbest question you'll read today, but it's something I just wondered about as I was deleting a dozen or so images from my computer. With a quick rm -rf command on the directory's contents, all the images were gone in a snap. When I drag the same dozen or so images to a trash can/recycle ban, it takes sometimes 10 seconds or more. Now I'm sure some of it comes from the overhead of the GUI and such, and some of it may be the fact that the file still "exists" in some form if it's put into the recycle bin, but is there anything else that accounts for such a huge time disparity? Are "rm" and "delete" just such fundamentally different commands so I'm trying to compare apples and oranges? Enlighten me, please!

  • How do I use XQuartz with ssh on OS X?

    - by cwd
I've downloaded the latest stable version of XQuartz on my Snow Leopard machine, and I'm trying to make an ssh connection with X forwarding but X11 keeps opening. How can I get OS X to use XQuartz? I had X11 installed I downloaded and installed XQuartz X11 is not open / running XQuartz is open and running I try and connect to a remote system using iTerm2: ssh user@remote -X X11 opens. XQuartz is still open, but I doubt it is doing anything. I also tried moving X11 to the trash but then the ssh connection will not complete, even though XQuartz is open. I also get the two warnings which I don't understand how to fix, even after reading the ssh man page. Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

  • Rsync fails for files that start with underscore when destination is zfs

    - by Eric
everyone. I'm using rsync3.1.0pre1 on Mac OS X 10.8.5, and am trying to rsync one folder to another. The destination is a ZFS volume mounted via SMB. The problem I'm having is that files that start with underscore (e.g., '_filename.jpg') are not being successfully synced to the destination. I get the following error message: rsync: mkstemp "/path/to/destination/._filename.jpg.NUgYJw" failed: Permission denied (13) In this case, '_filename.jpg' does not make it to the destination. I understand that rsync creates hidden, temporary files at the destination which are preceded with '.' and have a random file extension appended on the end. But the original filename starts with '', not '.', and I haven't asked rsync to copy extended attributes / resource forks over (unless it always does it). The rsync command I'm using is: rsync -avE --exclude='.DS_Store' --exclude '.Trash' --exclude 'Thumbs.db' --exclude '._*' --delete /source/ /destination/ Has anyone found a way around this problem? Thank you!

  • Is there other usage of Comcast extension cable and splitter?

    - by Tim
I have an unused Comcast high-speed internet self-install kit from 2006. It has two coils of extension cable, and a splitter, and some screws. The name of the cable is "extension cable" printed on the package. I wonder if that is its actual name? As ethernet cables are always useful, I wonder if the extension cables are totally worthless and should be tossed into a trash can? Or are they usable for some other purposes, or even sellable? Thanks! SVI Digital SV-2G Splitter (5/1000MHz): One interface of the cables: Screws

  • Mac OS X 10.6.8 - Can't remove SophosUpdate Packages/Folders on Desktop

    - by Greg_the_Ant
Every day a new "SophosUpdate" folder/package will appear on my desktop (see screenshot). When I highlight it my trash can turns into an eject button. When I drag them to the eject button nothing happens. Also nothing happens when I right click one of them and select "eject". The only thing that got rid of them once was starting up in safe mode but they keep coming back after that. Does anyone know what I can do? I'm stuck.

  • Booting an EXT4 image file from GRUB2

    - by sjjg
My friend needed a fast HDD so I gave her my small 64GB SDD. This SSD had my Linux install on it. I used dd to make an image of the partition (boot, root and home on one partition). This partition is now sitting on a traditional 500GB EXT4 formatted drive. Is there any way I can get GRUB to just boot using this .img file I have? I'm not getting my SSD back and I can't be bothered to go through the hassle of setting up my Linux install from scratch. I have come across loopback support in GRUB for ISO images. Does this support EXT4 also? I don't seem to be able to find anything specific and don't want to trash anything. Cheers.

  • Moving a File While It's In Use -- How Does it work?

    - by Zaz
I've noticed that on non-windows OS.... ie linux/mac i can do things like: - Send a zip to a friend over aim - Delete the file while it's in transfer And the transfer does not fail. Or, I can do operations like.. - start a movie - erase the file - the movie still plays to completion (read from disk, not just buffered in memory) Although the files are being "deleted", as i mentioned, they are actually being moved to a different location on the file system... ie a Trash directory or something. So it seems to me like the OS uses a pointer @ the file that is updated when it moves rather than accessing the files directly. Can anyone shed some light on how this AWESOME capability is actually implemented? I'm not even sure what to google to learn more about it. thank you.

  • Do emails from ShoppyBag contain virus or malware ?

    - by Sysadmin Evstar
I am curious -- when the ShoppyBag virus gets sent to you from a compromised "friend", inside the message is a secret one-pixel IMG unique to your email address --- and when your GMail message pulls up the message and the IMG is loaded from their server and displayed, their server knows you have read the message. At that moment, does it then grab your Gmail address book, the Flash Cookies, and all the Local Shared Objects it can find, i.e. at the instant you READ the message with the ShoppyBag virus, is it already too late? Do you have to Delete it to the Trash , then Delete Forever it , without reading it to be safe?

  • Thunderbird compact is taking forever

    - by mulllhausen
One day I came in to work and found that our development server - a Ubuntu box had a full hard disk. I did a bit of investigation using the du command and it seems like mozilla thunderbird is the major culprit. After burning off some backups, the disk was left at 94%: $ df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 895G 791G 59G 94% / none 4.0G 300K 4.0G 1% /dev none 4.0G 1.4M 4.0G 1% /dev/shm none 4.0G 140K 4.0G 1% /var/run none 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /var/lock none 4.0G 0 4.0G 0% /lib/init/rw $ cd $ du -ch | grep [0-9]G 666G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default/ImapMail/mail.adofms.com.au 666G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default/ImapMail 667G ./.thunderbird/ccsmcruu.default 667G ./.thunderbird 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines/iBike/Snapshots 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines/iBike 2.2G ./.VirtualBox/Machines 2.2G ./.VirtualBox 670G . 670G total I did some reading and found that Mozilla Thunderbird does not compact files by default - i.e. all of the old emails that were sent to trash are still kept. One of the mailboxes used to get a lot of spam so I guess this accounts for the 667GB. I opened up Thunderbird to see how much space the inbox actually takes up and it turns out to be approximately 500MB - over 1000 times less than the stuff that has not been compacted over the years. So i right clicked on the inbox directory in the tree on the left of Thunderbird and selected 'compact'. I left it for about 12hours but even after that it still said 'compacting folder' on the status bar. I don't use Thunderbird on this PC - it belonged to a colleague who has left the company, however I do occasionally need to look through the inbox for references to the project I am working on, so deleting all traces of Thunderbird is not an option. My question is - is there any way I can monitor the progress of Thunderbird's compacting function? I would really like to know how long it is going to take. Also is there any way I can speed up the compacting process?

  • Miami 311: Built on Windows Azure

    - by Josh Holmes
This is a cool use of Azure. The city of Miami tool their “311” data around potholes, trash pickup issues, recycling issues, broken sidewalks and the like and put that data in Azure. The next step is that they leveraged Bing Maps and Silverlight to visualize those issues spread on a map of the city. The solution takes advantage of virtually unlimited storage and processing power, provides the ability to quickly address service requests and implement updates even during peak times such as hurricane season. If things change, the City can bring the solution on site or move to a physical facility, all based on  need and cost-effectiveness. As a result, residents logging on to Miami 311 can see on average 4,500 issues in progress - not represented as a ‘list', but located on a map in relation to other projects in their neighborhood .  A simple click on the map allows them to easily drill down to more and more specific details if they want. In short, they have turned what used to be represented by a meaningless list of data into useful information, and created  actionable and consumable knowledge that is relevant to the citizens of Miami. For Miami, their ‘service call to the city' becomes an interactive process they can follow - and the City has a new tool to manage and deliver outcomes. … When the city made the move to the web, they chose tools they knew and software they trust. The Microsoft Windows Azure cloud platform made it easy to do, and they used both Bing mapping and Silverlight to build a user friendly front end. According to Port25 (Miami 311: Built on Windows Azure - Port 25: The Open Source Community at Microsoft), it took two people 8 days to implement the whole system and they are going to open source their solution so that other cities can leverage it. I haven’t seen yet where and how they are going to release it but I’ll keep you posted if I find out.

  • Google earth will not reinstall

    - by chad
I was trying to perform the the fix found at this link http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2012/01/how-to-make-google-earth-look-native-in-ubuntu It requires you to delete certain files from the /opt/google/earth/free folder and then add some new ones that you download. I deleted the files but the links to download the new ones were unusable. I was using gksudo nautilus so trash was disabled meaning I could not restore the files I had deleted. I the tried to go to the Google Earth website and reinstall it. I downloaded the .deb but when I tried to install it it gav me an error message saying "cannot install ia32-libs" I tried installing this via terminal and it gave me an error message saying chad@chad-Lenovo-G570:~$ sudo apt-get install ia32-libs [sudo] password for chad: Reading package lists... This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. • ngGrid reusable filter AngularJS

    - by wootscootinboogie
I have a business requirement that I filter a boolean value in my ngGrid. The filter has three states: only true, only false and both. Filtering like this seems to be a common enough use case that I should refactor that functionality out of my code for re use (possibly in a directive/filter?). I'd like to know how I can go about pulling out the customFilter function in my controller and make it so that I can pass the filter a property name on which to filter, and a value for selectedFilterOption. The code currently works, but I feel like this is a good chance to get better at angular :). So how can I pull out my filtering used here and make it a reusable piece of functionality? app.controller('DocumentController',function($scope,DocumentService) { $scope.filterOptions = { filterText: '', useExternalFilter: false }; $scope.totalServerItems =0; $scope.pagingOptions ={ pageSizes: [5,10,100], pageSize: 5, currentPage: 1 } //filter! $scope.dropdownOptions = [{ name: 'Show all' },{ name: 'Show active' },{ name: 'Show trash' }]; //default choice for filtering is 'show active' $scope.selectedFilterOption = $scope.dropdownOptions[1]; //three stage bool filter $scope.customFilter = function(data){ var tempData = []; angular.forEach(data, function(item){ if($scope.selectedFilterOption.name === 'Show all'){ tempData.push(item); } else if($scope.selectedFilterOption.name ==='Show active' && !item.markedForDelete){ tempData.push(item); } else if($scope.selectedFilterOption.name ==='Show trash' && item.markedForDelete){ tempData.push(item); } }); return tempData; } //grabbing data $scope.getPagedDataAsync = function(pageSize, page, filterValue, searchText){ var data; if(searchText){ var ft = searchText.toLowerCase(); DocumentService.get('filterableData.json').success(function(largeLoad){ //filter the data when searching data = $scope.customFilter(largeLoad).filter(function(item){ return JSON.stringify(item).toLowerCase().indexOf(ft) != -1; }) $scope.setPagingData($scope.customFilter(data),page,pageSize); }) } else{ DocumentService.get('filterableData.json').success(function(largeLoad){ var testLargeLoad = $scope.customFilter(largeLoad); //filter the data on initial page load when no search text has been entered $scope.setPagingData(testLargeLoad, page, pageSize); }) } }; //paging $scope.setPagingData = function(data, page, pageSize){ var pagedData = data.slice((page -1) * pageSize, page * pageSize); //filter the data for paging $scope.myData = $scope.customFilter(pagedData); $scope.myData = pagedData; $scope.totalServerItems = data.length; if(!$scope.$$phase){ $scope.$apply(); } } //watch for filter option change, set the data property of gridOptions to the newly filtered data $scope.$watch('selectedFilterOption',function(){ var data = $scope.customFilter($scope.myData); $scope.myData = data; $scope.getPagedDataAsync($scope.pagingOptions.pageSize, $scope.pagingOptions.currentPage); $scope.setPagingData($scope.myData,$scope.pagingOptions.currentPage,$scope.pagingOptions.pageSize); }) $scope.$watch('pagingOptions',function(newVal, oldVal){ if(newVal !== oldVal && newVal.currentPage !== oldVal.currentPage){ $scope.getPagedDataAsync($scope.pagingOptions.pageSize,$scope.pagingOptions.currentPage,$scope.filterOptions.filterText); } },true) $scope.message ="This is a message"; $scope.gridOptions = { data: 'myData', enablePaging: true, showFooter:true, totalServerItems: 'totalServerItems', pagingOptions: $scope.pagingOptions, filterOptions: $scope.filterOptions, showFilter: true, enableCellEdit: true, showColumnMenu: true, enableColumnReordering: true, enablePinning: true, showGroupPanel: true, groupsCollapsedByDefault: true, enableColumnResize: true } //get the data on page load $scope.getPagedDataAsync($scope.pagingOptions.pageSize, $scope.pagingOptions.currentPage); }); HTML

  • Inheriting projects - General Rules? [closed]

    - by pspahn
Possible Duplicate: When is a BIG Rewrite the answer? Software rewriting alternatives Are there any actual case studies on rewrites of software success/failure rates? When should you rewrite? We're not a software company. Is a complete re-write still a bad idea? Have you ever been involved in a BIG Rewrite? This is an area of discussion I have long been curious about, but overall, I generally lack the experience to give myself an answer that I would fully trust. We've all been there, a new client shows up with a half-complete project they are looking to finish and launch. For whatever reason, they fired their previous developer, and it's now up to you to save the day. I am just finishing up a code review for a new client, and in my estimation is would be better to scrap what the previous developers built since and start from scratch. There's a ton of reasons why I am leaning toward this way, but it still makes me nervous since the client isn't going to want to hear "those last guys built you a big turd, and I can either polish it, or throw it in the trash". What are your general rules for accepting these projects? How do you determine whether it will be better to start from scratch or continue with the existing code base? What other extra steps might you take to help control client expectations, since the previous developer may have inflated those expectations beyond a reasonable level? Any other general advice?

  • Partial upgrade on 12.04, how to stop nagging after locking to a working NVIDIA & xorg

    - by alsk
How to stop the upgrade manager from offering updates and upgrades that potentially would harm my working 2D and 3D graphics? Finally, I got 12.04 working as it should: with nvidia-173 drivers by downgrading xorg and locking the version: On my 32-bit system on Athlon64, with (Albatron) NVIDIA GeForce FX5700XT, locked (/pinned) to xorg 1:7.6-7ubuntu7, xserver-xorg-core 2:11.1-0obuntu10.07, nvidia-173 173.14.35-0ubuntu0.2? An annoying thing left is that every time the updates are checked, I get warning of partial updates, and ambiguous options of "partial update" and "close". Ambiguous in that sense that if I click close, I will get option to update a few packages, which has been OK, while "partial update" would like to update my kernel to 3.2, alter xorg, remove nvidia-173 etc., and update mesa etc. This is not what I call appropriate, after locking XORG and NVIDIA drivers to working ones. One may say according to package management logic it may be correct, but to me as an user it makes little sense. Last Ubuntu that worked without big mess for me was 10.10, hence I will not put 12.10 to my "production" system, until I can be sure it will not trash the system again. P.S. Is there a recommended way to keep NVIDIA GeForce FX working with 3D on Ubuntu... in future?

  • Why is the root partition on my disk full?

    - by Agmenor
I installed Ubuntu 12.04 by doing a fresh install where there was previously Ubuntu 11.10. My computer warns me now that my disk is nearly full. After having run apt-get purge, run apt-get autoremove and emptied the Trash can, I still have this problem as shown by this screenshot of Gparted: The disk /dev/sda7 is indeed full. I ran the Disk Usage Analyzer (Baobab) and I am still not sure of what is happening: One of my hypothesis is that when installing Ubuntu 12.04, I didn't configure my disks well and the disk /dev/sda6 is not mounted well as /home. Is this the reason indeed? What should I do to verify this and then to get the things fixed? Here are a few additional details to answer the questions I received (thank you everybody): My home directory is not encrypted. The Backup utility (Déjà Dup) is not set for automatic backups. (I do it myself and manually.) After I mount /dev/sda6, the command df -h gives Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda7 244G 221G 12G 96% / udev 3,9G 4,0K 3,9G 1% /dev tmpfs 1,6G 904K 1,6G 1% /run none 5,0M 0 5,0M 0% /run/lock none 3,9G 164K 3,9G 1% /run/shm /dev/sda6 653G 189G 433G 31% /media/8ec2fa69-039b-4c52-ab1b-034d785132a1 (sorry but formatting this into code does not work, for an unknown reason) Thanks to izx's post, I realized /dev/sda6 was not even mounted before. It contains all the documents I used to have when I was running Ubuntu 11.10.

  • Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot?

    - by Pedram
Is there any way to kill a zombie process without reboot? Here is how it happens: I wanted to download a 12GB torrent. After adding the .torrent file, transmission turned into a zombie process.I tried ktorrent too.Same behavior. Finally I could download the file using µTorrent but after closing the program, it turns into a zombie as well. I tried using kill skill and pkill with different options and -9 signal but no success. In some answers in web I found out killing the parent can kill the zombie, but killing wine didn't help either. Is there another way? • Battery is drained too quickly

    - by LucaB
    I'm getting really low battery life under ubuntu, not even close to windows. I tried powertop, and I saw that my laptop is consuming in idle nearly 20 watts (a bit more). I tried to install laptop-mode-tools, change "good" into "bad" in powertop, but nothing changes. I see that I have the the HD audio output device which is running at 100% every time. Could this be the problem? This is a report from powertop. The battery reports a discharge rate of 22.8 W The estimated remaining time is 33 minutes Summary: 381.8 wakeups/second, 0.0 GPU ops/second and 0.0 VFS ops/sec Usage Events/s Category Description 3.2 ms/s 182.7 Timer tick_sched_timer 100.0% Device Audio codec hwC0D3: Intel 7.9 ms/s 25.1 Process /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/run/lightdm/root/:0 -nolisten tcp vt7 -novtswitch -background no 1.9 ms/s 24.2 Interrupt [6] tasklet(softirq) 2.9 ms/s 23.2 Process /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser --type=zygote 8.1 ms/s 20.3 Process /usr/lib/unity/unity-panel-service 0.7 ms/s 17.4 Timer hrtimer_wakeup 4.2 ms/s 12.6 Process unity-2d-panel 604.4 µs/s 9.7 Process syndaemon -i 2.0 -K -R -t 149.7 µs/s 9.7 kWork ieee80211_iface_work 0.8 ms/s 8.7 Process metacity 19.5 ms/s 1.0 Process powertop 3.0 ms/s 6.8 Process //bin/dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session 699.0 µs/s 6.8 Process /usr/lib/thunderbird/thunderbird 4.3 ms/s 4.8 Process gnome-terminal 658.9 µs/s 2.9 Interrupt [1] timer(softirq) 75.1 µs/s 2.9 kWork iwl_bg_run_time_calib_work 163.8 µs/s 1.9 Process /usr/lib/accountsservice/accounts-daemon 70.6 µs/s 1.9 Process [ksoftirqd/2] 25.8 µs/s 1.9 Process [ksoftirqd/0] 1.0 ms/s 1.0 Process /usr/bin/python /usr/sbin/powernapd 408.2 µs/s 1.0 Process unity-2d-shell 189.8 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser 124.4 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/unity-lens-applications/unity-applications-daemon 113.3 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon/gnome-settings-daemon 112.0 µs/s 1.0 Process nautilus -n 104.9 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-trash --spawner :1.2 /org/gtk/gvfs/exec_spaw/0 77.5 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/colord/colord 75.6 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-gdu-volume-monitor 75.0 µs/s 1.0 Interrupt [53] i915 74.9 µs/s 1.0 Process /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfs-afc-volume-monitor What should I do to make the battery consumption lower?

  • Recent update killed unity 3d launcher

    - by Steve
I am scratching my head on this one, a lot of things are still new to me. I updated 126 packages just now through the update manager, and upon reboot everything works fine except the unity launcher. It's just a dark space. The dash still works, as does the top panel and docky. When I try: unity --replace I end up with this and then an indefinite hang: (compiz:3689): GConf-CRITICAL **: gconf_client_add_dir: assertion `gconf_valid_key (dirname, NULL)' failed WARN 2012-09-23 02:18:29 unity.favorites FavoriteStoreGSettings.cpp:139 Unable to load GDesktopAppInfo for 'ubiquity-gtkui.desktop' WARN 2012-09-23 02:18:30 unity.favorites FavoriteStoreGSettings.cpp:139 Unable to load GDesktopAppInfo for 'ubuntuone-installer.desktop' ERROR 2012-09-23 02:18:30 unity.launcher.trashlaunchericon TrashLauncherIcon.cpp:62 Could not create file monitor for trash uri: Operation not supported Initializing unityshell options...done WARN 2012-09-23 02:18:31 unity.libindicator <unknown>:0 Desktop file '/usr/share/applications/libreoffice-writer.desktop' is using a deprecated format for its actions that will be dropped soon. Setting Update "main_menu_key" Setting Update "run_key" Unfortunately I cannot make heads or tails of this. Anyone, please help?
