  • Looking for a good 16 to 24 gigabit switch for home office

    - by MartinB
Hi I currently working on my new home office and I want to take that occasion to wire some parts of my house with cat6 Ethernet. To make all this work, I'm looking for a gigabit switch with at least 16 ports (but I would prefer 24 to have some room to grow) that is reliable and quiet. I've about 250$ to put on that. The options I'm looking for now are - DLink 1024D - Netgear JGS524 Would you recommend (or not) one of these switches ? Have you some other suggestions ? Thanks

  • ATI / AMD HIS HD 7870 Graphics card fan speed below 16% / 20% 26%

    - by Thorsten Niehues
I bought a AMD / ATI HIS HD 7870 to replace my old HD 4870. I noticed that the fan speed does not scale with the temperature: The fan speed does not get below 28% (read from catalyst / automatic fan speed) If I manually change it in the catalyst to 20% then it has the same speed than 28% : about 900-1000 rpm. With HIS iTurbo i manually can change the fan speed below 20%. But I noticed that changing the fan speed below 16% results in 3200 rpm. This is really stupid and annoying since my PC is a ultra silent PC and all fans are running with about 500 rpm when the PC is idle (windows / musik movies, etc.) Is there any way to change the fan speed to a reasonable speed like 500 rpm by software or hardware adapters (I really don't like to put a poti between the 12V line)

  • Fedora 16 Running Hot

    - by sdasdadas
Since switching from Windows 7 to Fedora 16, my laptop has been running incredibly hot (by the air exhaust). The laptop is an Asus K73S. Running 'sensors', I receive: acpitz-virtual-0: 75.0 celsius nouveau-pci-0100: 66.0 celsius asus-isa-0000: 75.0 celsius The only CPU hog is Firefox at 30 - 40% on average. My GPU information (from lspci) is: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200/2nd Generation Core Process or Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09). Running lspci | grep -i VGA, returns: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GF106 [GeForce GT 555M SDDR3] (rev a1) I don't notice a huge difference running without the battery, but it does seem a little cooler. Thanks!

  • Java error on bilinear interpolation of 16 bit data

    - by Jon
I'm having an issue using bilinear interpolation for 16 bit data. I have two images, origImage and displayImage. I want to use AffineTransformOp to filter origImage through an AffineTransform into displayImage which is the size of the display area. origImage is of type BufferedImage.TYPE_USHORT_GRAY and has a raster of type sun.awt.image.ShortInterleavedRaster. Here is the code I have right now displayImage = new BufferedImage(getWidth(), getHeight(), origImage.getType()); try { op = new AffineTransformOp(atx, AffineTransformOp.TYPE_BILINEAR); op.filter(origImage, displayImage); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } In order to show the error I have created 2 gradient images. One has values in the 15 bit range (max of 32767) and one in the 16 bit range (max of 65535). Below are the two images 15 bit image 16 bit image These two images were created in identical fashions and should look identical, but notice the line across the middle of the 16 bit image. At first I thought that this was an overflow problem however, it is weird that it's manifesting itself in the center of the gradient instead of at the end where the pixel values are higher. Also, if it was an overflow issue than I would suspect that the 15 bit image would have been affected as well. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

  • Terminal Server 2008: Installing 16-bit Application (FoxPro 2.6)

    - by JohnyD
I have one physical Windows 2008 R2 server running Hyper-V. Running under Hyper-V I have a virtual Windows Server 2008 R2 server running Remote Desktop Services (Terminal Services). I'm preparing my applications using the "Install Application on Remote Desktop..." control panel app. So far so good. However, I am now trying to install FoxPro 2.6 which is a 16-bit windows application. When I try to install it I receive the message: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher". Is there any way around this? I'm in the middle of a large migration to thin-clients and foxpro 2.6, while it won't be around forever, is a very integral application for our data-entry personnel. How can I get this to work? Thanks in advance!

  • 16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem: csrss.exe

    - by Wesley
Hi all, I just booted up my Samsung N120 netbook (with Windows XP Home SP3) and a dialog box came up with a command prompt window behind it. The dialog box is titled 16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem and the message is as follows: C:\DOCUME~1\SAMSUNG\csrss.exe The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:0544 IP:0117 OP:63 00 64 00 34 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application. This only started on my most recent boot-up. One thing to note is that when I downloaded the Dropbox installer and opened it up, Panda Cloud Antivirus detected a suspicious file, which was csrss.exe and "neutralized it." However, an actual virus or trojan was not detected immediately before the file was detected and neutralized. Just under two weeks ago, a trojan and two viruses were detected for some odd reason. (I only went to website I knew and I do not torrent or browse adult sites.) Anyhow, the two viruses came up in temporary files and the trojan was "neutralized." Anyways, the main question is: How can I repair the csrss.exe file such that Windows XP starts up properly? A screenshot could be posted upon request. Thanks in advance!

  • Laptop choice for development: MacBook Pro 17 vs Dell Studio XPS 16 vs HP Envy 15

    - by Shalan
Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life? Much thanks! ~shalan

  • Strlen of MAX 16 chars string using bitwise operators

    - by fabrizioM
    The challenge is to find the fastest way to determine in C/C++ the length of a c-string using bitwise operations in C. char thestring[16]; The c-string has a max size of 16 chars and is inside a buffer If the string is equal to 16 chars doesn't have the null byte at the end. I am sure can be done but didn't got it right yet. I am working on this at the moment, but assuming the string is memcpied on a zero-filled buffer. len = buff[0] != 0x0 + buff[1] != 0x0 + buff[2] != 0x0 + buff[3] != 0x0 + buff[4] != 0x0 + buff[5] != 0x0 + buff[6] != 0x0 + buff[7] != 0x0 + buff[8] != 0x0 + buff[9] != 0x0 + buff[10] != 0x0 + buff[11] != 0x0 + buff[12] != 0x0 + buff[13] != 0x0 + buff[14] != 0x0 + buff[15] != 0x0;

  • Representing a 16 byte variable

Thanks, Bobby

  • Enlarging everything on 16" 1920x1080 notebook display in Windows 7

    - by Rob
Does Windows 7 have an option to enlarge everything on the screen, e.g. via a spi setting? How well does this work? i.e. do the objects look clear when enlarged? I ask this because sometimes software that enlarges non-photographic bitmap images e.g. icons and symbols can leave them artifacted with harsh jaggier slopes and blurred lines. I've tried the dpi setting in Windows XP but it doesn't enlarge everything, and some things are not so clear as described above. I'm looking at a notebook/laptop with this spec. I've already enjoyed using a 15.4" 1920x1200 display for 5 years. I've tried the dpi setting in Windows XP but it doesn't enlarge everything, and some things are not so clear as described above. I am buying a laptop for my father who will probably prefer larger objects on the screen, although I want to provide some future proofing by allowing more on the screen if needed. I'm not interested in answers that debate the effectiveness or otherwise merits of 1920x1080 on a 16" display, please. The alternative option of 1366x768 seems too little.

  • 16 millisecond quantization when sending/receivingtcp packets

    - by MKZ
Hi, I have a C++ application running on windows xp 32 system sending and receiving short tcp/ip packets. Measuring (accurately) the arrival time I see a quantization of the arrival time to 16 millisecond time units. (Meaning all packets arriving are at (16 )xN milliseconds separated from each other) To avoid packet aggregation I tried to disable the NAGLE algorithm by setting the IPPROTO_TCP option to TCP_NODELAY in the socket variables but it did not help I suspect that the problem is related to the windows schedular which also have a 16 millisecond clock.. Any idea of a solution to this problem ? Thanks

  • How can I make a 32 bit render target with a 16 bit alpha channel in DirectX?

    - by J Junker
I want to create a render target that is 32-bit, with 16 bits each for alpha and luminance. The closest surface formats I can find in the DirectX SDK are: D3DFMT_A8L8 // 16-bit using 8 bits each for alpha and luminance. D3DFMT_G16R16F // 32-bit float format using 16 bits for the red channel and 16 bits for the green channel. But I don't think either of these will work, since D3DFMT_A8L8 doesn't have the precision and D3DFMT_G16R16F doesn't have an alpha channel (I need a separate blend state for alpha). How can I create a render target that allows a separate blend state for luminance and alpha, with 16 bit precision on each channel, that doesn't exceed 32 bits per pixel?

  • Order of the [BITS 16] and [ORG 0x0000] directives

    - by dboarman-FissureStudios
I am beginning some experimentation in writing a kernel and having fun doing it. I have the basic boot-loader done and the following directives: [BITS 16] [ORG 0x0000] In the kernel tutorial, however, it starts with: [ORG 0x0000] [BITS 16] I was wondering if the order in which these directives are given makes a difference? I am using NASM version 2.06rc2, OpenSUSE 11.2

  • Objective-C Decimal to Base 16 Hex conversion

    - by JustinXXVII
Does anyone have a code snippet or a class that will take a long long and turn it into a 16 byte Hex string? I'm looking to turn data like this long long decimalRepresentation = 1719886131591410351; and turn it into this //Base 16 Hex Output: 17DE435307A07300 The %x operator doesn't want to work for me NSLog(@"Hex: %x",decimalRepresentation); //console : "Hex: 7a072af" As you can see that's not even close. Any help is truly appreciated!

  • Fedora 16 can connect to samba share using smbclient but not in nautilus 3.2.1

    - by Nathan Jones
I have a machine running Ubuntu 11.10 Server acting as a Samba server to share my home directory. Everything works fine on my Windows 7 machine, but on my Fedora 16 laptop, if I use Nautilus to try to access the share using smb://192.168.0.8/nathan in the location bar, it just has the loading cursor and does nothing. It never shows any errors, nothing. Using smbclient works just fine, but I'd like to get it working in Nautilus. I know that there can be problems with SELinux and Samba, so I created a file called booleans.local that contains samba_enable_home_dirs=1. • DESIGNING FOR WIN PHONE 7

Designing applications for the Win Phone 7 is very similar to designing for print. In my opinion, it feels like a cross between a tri-fold brochure and a poster. I based my prototype designs on Microsofts Metro style guide, with typography as the main focus and stunning imagery for support. Its nice to have fixed factors regulating the design, making it a fun and fresh design experience. Microsoft provides a UI Design Guidelines document that outlines layout sizes, background image size, recommended typefaces and spacing. You know what you are designing for and you know how it will look and act on the win phone 7 platform. Although applications are not required to strictly adhere to the Metro style guide I feel it makes the best use of the panorama view  and navigation. With strong examples of this UI concept in place like their Zune-like music + videos hub, I found it fairly easy to put together a few quick app mockups (see below). In addition to design guidelines, using a ready built design templates, or a win phone 7 specific panorama control like the one by Clarity Consulting will make the process of bringing your designs to life much more efficient. Likes, Dislikes, and Challenges I think the idea of the hub is completely intuitive. This concept clearly breaks down info into more manageable pieces, and greatly helps with organization when designing for the phone. I like the chromeless appearance, allowing the core functionality of the application to take precedence over gradients, textures, bevels, drop shadows, and the complicated animations you see on the web. Although I understand the Win Phone 7 guidelines are a work in progress, I found a few contradictions. I also noticed that certain design specifications did not translate well to the phone emulator . If you use their guidelines as suggested best practices and not as fixed definitions you will have more success. Multi-directional vs Linear The main challenge I had was stepping away from familiar navigational examples seen in other mobile phones. I had to keep reminding myself that the content to the right and to the left of what I was working on didnt necessarily have to have a direct link to one another. I started thinking multi-directional as opposed to linear. Win phone 7 vs IPhone The Metro styling of the Win Phone 7 is similar to the Zune HD and the Windows Media Center UI and offers a different interface paradigm than the IPhone. When navigating an application it feels like you are panning a long seamless page of information in contrast to the multiple panels of an IPhone. I think there is less of an opportunity to overdesign your application, which happens often with IPhone applications. While both interfaces are simple and sleek, win phone 7 really gets down to the basics. IPhone sets a high standard for designing for touch, designing for win phone 7 could improve on that user experience with a consistent and strategic use of white space and staying away from a menu and icon heavy UI. • Why would 70-persistent-net.rules have no effect?

    - by Wes Felter
    I've got a saucy server with a lot of NICs and they end up with weird names like "rename19". I know interface names can be changed by modifying the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules file. The first clue that something is wrong is that that file did not exist even though it's supposed to be created automatically. So I decided to write my own based on advice from Linux From Scratch: ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.0", NAME="eth0" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.1", NAME="eth1" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.2", NAME="eth2" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:06:00.3", NAME="eth3" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:0c:00.0", NAME="mezz0" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:0c:00.1", NAME="mezz1" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:1b:00.0", NAME="slot1a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:1b:00.1", NAME="slot1b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:20:00.0", NAME="slot2a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:20:00.1", NAME="slot2b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:11:00.0", NAME="slot3a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:11:00.1", NAME="slot3b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:8b:00.0", NAME="slot4a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:8b:00.1", NAME="slot4b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:90:00.0", NAME="slot5a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:90:00.1", NAME="slot5b" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:95:00.0", NAME="slot6a" ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", BUS=="pci", KERNELS=="0000:95:00.1", NAME="slot6b" (I'm matching on PCI IDs instead of MAC addresses because I have multiple identical machines that I want to apply this configuration to.) After rebooting, nothing has changed. It's like these rules aren't even being read. There's not much going on in dmesg either: $ dmesg | grep udev [ 3.196629] systemd-udevd[323]: starting version 204 [ 6.719140] systemd-udevd[550]: starting version 204 [ 38.695050] init: udev-fallback-graphics main process (1658) terminated with status 1

  • android alarm not able to launch alarm activity

    - by user965830
I am new to android programming and am trying to make this simple alarm app. I have my code written and it is compiled with no errors. The app runs in the emulator, that is the main activity asks the date and time, but when i click on the confirm button, it displays the message - "Unfortunately, Timer1 has stopped working." The code for my main activity is as follows: public void onClick(View v) { EditText date = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editDate); EditText month = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editMonth); EditText hour = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editHour); EditText min = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.editMin); int dt = Integer.parseInt(date.getText().toString()); int mon = Integer.parseInt(month.getText().toString()); int hr = Integer.parseInt(hour.getText().toString()); int mnt = Integer.parseInt(min.getText().toString()); Intent myIntent = new Intent(MainActivity.this, AlarmActivity.class); pendingIntent = PendingIntent.getService(MainActivity.this, 0, myIntent, 0); AlarmManager alarmManager = (AlarmManager) getSystemService(ALARM_SERVICE); Calendar calendar = Calendar.getInstance(); calendar.set(Calendar.DATE, dt); calendar.set(Calendar.MONTH, mon); calendar.set(Calendar.HOUR, hr); calendar.set(Calendar.MINUTE, mnt); alarmManager.set(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, calendar.getTimeInMillis(), pendingIntent); } I do not understand what all the errors in logcat mean, so i am posting them: 06-25 16:03:32.175: I/Process(566): Sending signal.
