  • How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

    - by RobW
I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?

  • Is it possible to distribute STDIN over parallel processes?

    - by Erik
Given the following example input on STDIN: foo bar bar baz === qux bla === def zzz yyy Is it possible to split it on the delimiter (in this case '===') and feed it over stdin to a command running in parallel? So the example input above would result in 3 parallel processes (for example a command called do.sh) where each instance received a part of the data on STDIN, like this: do.sh (instance 1) receives this over STDIN: foo bar bar baz do.sh (instance 2) receives this over STDIN: qux bla do.sh (instance 3) receives this over STDIN: def zzz yyy I suppose something like this is possible using xargs or GNU parallel, but I do not know how.

  • Portable C++ library for IPC (processes and shared memory), Boost vs ACE vs Poco?

    - by user363778
Hi, I need a portable C++ library for doing IPC. I used fork() and SysV shared memory until now but this limits me to Linux/Unix. I found out that there are 3 major C++ libraries that offer a portable solution (including Windows and Mac OS X). I really like Boost, and would like to use it but I need processes and it seems like that this is only an experimental branch until now!? I have never heard of ACE or POCO before and thus I am stuck I do not know which one to choose. I need fork(), sleep() (usleep() would be great) and shared memory of course. Performance and documentation are also important criteria. Thanks, for your Help!

  • C#: Farm out jobs to worker processes on a multi-processor machine

    - by Andrew White
Hi there, I have a generic check that needs to be run on ca. 1000 objects. The check takes about 3 seconds. We have a server with 4 processors (and we also have other multi-processor servers in our network) so we would like to create an exe / dll to do the checking and return the results to the "master". Does anyone know of a framework for this, or how would one go about it in C#? Specifically: * What's the best way to transfer data between the master and the worker process? * How would the master ensure that always 4 processes are running at any one time and as soon as a worker process is finished start a new one. * How to register that the worker is finished and append it's results to a list? Hope it's clear enough but happy to clarify. A.

  • Why does rsync spawn multiple processes for me?

    - by Yoga
I am using the following cron statement to backup from one folder to another folder in the same machine: 19 21 * * * root rsync -ac --delete /source/folder /dest/folder When I use pstree, I see the cron forked three processes +-cron---cron---rsync---rsync---rsync And ps 9972 ? Ds 1:00 rsync -ac --delete /source/folder /dest/folder 9973 ? S 0:29 rsync -ac --delete /source/folder /dest/folder 9974 ? S 0:09 rsync -ac --delete /source/folder /dest/folder Why are three processes? Can I limit to only one?

  • Shell script to control user initiated processes

    - by Gnanam
Hi, I'm not a shell script expert. I'm looking for a shell script which checks for maximum number of Java processes (MyJavaStandalone) running in the system before starting/executing the current Java process. Example: Script: /home/myfolder/script.sh script.sh contains /usr/java/jdk1.6.0/bin/java MyJavaStandalone >> $DATE.log & Here, before executing "MyJavaStandalone", if there are already 10 processes running, then this current process should not be started.

  • apache spawning too many processes despite maxclient and other constraints

    - by Josh Nankin
Here are my MPM constraints: StartServers 10 MinSpareServers 10 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 2000 However despite this, I have over 20 apache processes running currently, and in the past hour or two there have been as many as 40-50. Shouldn't the MaxClient and MaxSpareServers keep the number of processes under control (i.e. about 10)? Is there something I'm missing?

  • The action can't be completed because the file is open in IIS Worker Process

    - by Bjørn Øyvind Halvorsen
I have a windows server 2008 R2 running a couple of sites for me, while developing i usually post updates to this server. Now, i tried posting an update but it failed said it has a file in use and the error msg is as follows: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in IIS Worker Process" "Close the file and try again." I have tried stopping the site but this does not help. The site is running in the same application pool as the site that should stay online so a recycle might be breaking the running site (If this is wrong, please correct me). Question is: Is there a way to "Release" the lock that is put on the file without stopping other currently running sites?

  • UpdateAllWindows() from within a worker thread?

    - by Harvey
I have a worker thread in a class that is owned by a ChildView. (I intend to move this to the Doc eventually.) When the worker thread completes a task I want all the views to be updated. How can I make a call to tell the Doc to issue an UpdateAllViews()? Or is there a better approach? Thank you.

  • Co-worker told me ubuntu server LTS is not built for production env

    - by Sandro Dzneladze
I was confronted with a very vague statement today, but unfortunately I had no clue how to respond or analyse this. Co-worker told me ubuntu server LTS is not built for production env. What is there that makes it not built for production environment? (obviously no answer followed, so this is my question to you...) is it ...packages? ...ease of use? ...supported systems? ...stability? ...support? ...popularity?

  • Are there any actual examples of profitable programmer's "worker's cooperatives"?

    - by Wannabe Tycoon
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worker_cooperative I'm curious whether there are, anywhere in the world, worker's cooperatives that center on a technology business that involves either programming, IT, or some sort of IT or programming related consulting or services. The wikipedia link above is an overview of the concept. The short form explanation is that a co-op is a worker-owned business. Also there is the notion that every worker owns shares in the business. I am interested in knowing whether an example of a "programmer's/IT co-op" even exists. Note: I am not talking about nor asking about a government-funded incubator nor any other socialized, state supported group. I also don't mean "co-working", which is renting an office with other self employed people doing their own thing. I mean a going, profitable IT business operating in a competitive environment that is worker-owned and run.

  • A lots of Apache processes are using my CPU uses always more than 70%

    - by Barkat Ullah
I am running a plesk panel in 1and1. I have 120 sites running and all are using pligg cms, each site has 600 visitors per day. Please see the details of my server below: HDD-1000GB RAM-16GB Processor-6 Core I always see a lot of apache processes running in my # top view, so the server seems overloaded. If I can reduce the amount apache processes I think the server will be ok. But I don't know why too many apache processes are running. Please see the link below for the screenshot of my # top view: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26967109/%23Top-2.jpg Sometimes I saw too many connection error in my plesk control panel, so I added the below line in my [mysqld] section: set-variable=max_connections=416 But I didn't find a solution yet. I have also added maxclients and serverlimit 416 in the config /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf But no solution yet. I am researching around more than 7 days but don't get any solution. Please help me to solve the problem. In peak hours my sites are taking too much time to load, but off-peak hour it is ok. Please help me to find out the actual problem.

  • Apache2 mod_proxy to remote Tomcat7 - slow response

    - by 12N
Been stuck with this one for a few days. Will try to provide as much information as possible, but please feel free to ask for extra detail. I have 2 VMs behind a NAT, 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.102, both running Ubuntu 11.04 x64. The first one is mapped to the exterior and is our webserver, has one Apache/2.2.17 install with several vhosts to serve static content, and there's also mod_jk for load balancing. The second one has a tomcat 7 install with several J2EE REST webservices but no apache - requests are expected to be passed directly from .100 apache to .102 tomcat. It is my intention to prepare a tomcat clustered environment. My problem: Requests reach to 192.168.0.100 with no trouble whatsoever, but then take about... 100 seconds for data to actually arrive to .102 - by that time apache has already timeouted, but tomcat receives and processes the request pretty normally. This happens both when using mod_jk, mod_proxy, or mod_ajp_proxy. No idea why, since there are no firewalls in either of the machines, both are pingable - more than that, there are NFS shares active working like a charm - and a mod_proxy experience shown that requests originating directly from .100 are processed normally. Also, to add insult to injury, a similar environment is set up at our office network. Everything works perfectly. -_- The only difference? We have no ip translation at the office and do everything by internal addresses - dunno if that's relevant in any way. Some configs: Apache vhost: <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/ ServerName www.example.com ProxyRequests Off <Proxy *> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews AllowOverride all Order allow, deny allow from all </Proxy> ProxyPass /bork http://192.168.0.102:8080/bork ProxyPassReverse /bork http://192.168.0.102:8080/bork LogLevel debug CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/api_access.log combined ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/api_error.log </VirtualHost> Tomcat connectors <Connector port="8080" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" redirectPort="8443" /> <Connector port="8009" enableLookups="false" redirectPort="8443" protocol="AJP/1.3" /> And a debug log from apache, from a test using mod_proxy_ajp. The behavior is pretty much the same in mod_proxy, at least regarding the delay. Please note that tomcat eventually receives and processes the request, more or less when the log starts being updated again: [Sun May 06 14:40:33 2012] [debug] proxy_util.c(1506): [client • windows 2008 r2 iis worker proccess memory usage increase

    - by nLL
I have this web site written in c#. around 400-500 users online at any time. it was on windows 2008 32 bit machine before and never ever locked/slowed down due to increased memory consumption up until i upgraded it's server to win 2008 r2 64 bit. Old server had only 4 gig ram and quad core cpu at 2ghz. site was working just fine. since i've upgraded the server i noticed (2 times with in 10 days) it started to eat ram. last night it went up to 4 gb ram. with ram increase response slows down quite a lot. recycling app pool doesn't help. I have to restart it's worker process to recover. i've noticed this usually happens if there are continuous errors. as i didn't change anything in the code am i safe to assume it is not related to memory leak in the code? did anyone came across something like that? same thing happens if i create continuous errors with classic asp. thanks

  • Why does ruby-debug say 'Saved frames may be incomplete'

From time-to-time I get this when a breakpoint is triggered. It looks like stack frames aren't getting saved so I can't step back through the call stack - a real pain. I have a worker thread in a class that is owned by a ChildView. (I intend to move this to the Doc eventually.) When the worker thread completes a task I want all the views to be updated. How can I make a call to tell the Doc to issue an UpdateAllViews()? Or is there a better approach? Thank you. Added by OP: I am looking for a simple solution. The App is running on a single user, single CPU computer and does not need network (or Internet) access. There is nothing to cause a deadlock. I think I would like to have the worker thread post (or send) a message to cause the views to update. Everything I read about threading seems way more complicated than what I need - and, yes, I understand that all those precautions are necessary for applications that are running in multiprocessor, multiuser, client-server systems, etc. But none of those apply in my situation. I am just stuck at getting the right combination of getting the window handle, posting the message and responding to the message in the right functions and classes to compile and function at all.

  • PHP-FPM processes holding onto MongoDB connection states

    - by Brendan
For the relevant part of our server stack, we're running: NGINX 1.2.3 PHP-FPM 5.3.10 with PECL mongo 1.2.12 MongoDB 2.0.7 CentOS 6.2 We're getting some strange, but predictable behavior when the MongoDB server goes away (crashes, gets killed, etc). Even with a try/catch block around the connection code, i.e: try { $mdb = new Mongo('mongodb://localhost:27017'); } catch (MongoConnectionException $e) { die( $e->getMessage() ); } $db = $mdb->selectDB('collection_name'); Depending on which PHP-FPM workers have connected to mongo already, the connection state is cached, causing further exceptions to go unhandled, because the $mdb connection handler can't be used. The troubling thing is that the try does not consistently fail for a considerable amount of time, up to 15 minutes later, when -- I assume -- the php-fpm processes die/respawn. Essentially, the behavior is that when you hit a worker that hasn't connected to mongo yet, you get the die message above, and when you connect to a worker that has, you get an unhandled exception from $mdb->selectDB('collection_name'); because catch does not run. When PHP is a single process, i.e. via Apache with mod_php, this behavior does not occur. Just for posterity, going back to Apache/mod_php is not an option for us at this time. Is there a way to fix this behavior? I don't want the connection state to be inconsistent between different php-fpm processes.

  • Mac has become insanely slow : Processes SystemUIServer, UserEventAgent and loginwindow using a lot of memory

    - by SatheeshJM
I have been using my Mac for for many months without any problem. But recently all of a sudden the Mac became insanely slow. I opened Activity Manager to see what was happening. For three processes SystemUIServer, UserEventAgent and loginwindow, the memory gradually increases and reaches upto 2 GB for each process. This completely hangs up my Mac. I tried the following : 1. Restart Mac 2. Restart Mac in safe mode 3. Manually kill the processes 4. Remove Date and Time from Menu bar(this was supposed to be the problem for the SysteUIServer process's memory according to many users) 5. Removed the externally connected keyboard and mouse(some had suggested this for UserEventAgent's memory) No luck with any of those. The moment I log in, the memory spikes up. Any idea what the hell is happening? Please help.

  • Excluding child processes from ps

    - by stefpet
    Background: To reload app configuration I need to kill -HUP the parent processes' PIDs. To find PIDs I currently use ps auxf | grep gunicorn with the following example output: $ ps auxf | grep gunicorn stpe 4222 0.0 0.2 64524 11668 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4225 0.0 0.4 76920 16332 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4226 0.0 0.4 76932 16340 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4227 0.0 0.4 76940 16344 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4228 0.0 0.4 76948 16344 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4229 0.0 0.4 76960 16356 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4230 0.0 0.4 76972 16368 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4231 0.0 0.4 78856 18644 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 4232 0.0 0.4 76992 16376 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 5685 0.0 0.0 22076 908 pts/1 S+ 11:50 0:00 | \_ grep --color=auto gunicorn stpe 5012 0.0 0.2 64512 11656 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5021 0.0 0.4 77656 17156 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5022 0.0 0.4 77664 17156 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5023 0.0 0.4 77672 17164 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5024 0.0 0.4 77684 17196 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5025 0.0 0.4 77692 17200 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5026 0.0 0.4 77700 17208 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5027 0.0 0.4 77712 17220 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py stpe 5028 0.0 0.4 77720 17220 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py Based on the above I see that it is 4222 and 5012 I need to HUP. Question: How can I exclude the child processes and only get the parent process (please note however that the processes I want do also have a parent (e.g. bash) that I'm uninterested with)? Using a regexp with grep on how much indentation there is in the ascii tree feels dirty. Is there a better way? Example: The desired output would be something like this. stpe 4222 0.0 0.2 64524 11668 pts/2 S+ 11:01 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_api:app -c app_api.ini.py stpe 5012 0.0 0.2 64512 11656 pts/3 S+ 11:22 0:00 \_ /usr/bin/python /usr/local/bin/gunicorn app_game_api:app -c app_game_api.ini.py This would be easily parseable to be able to automatically find the PIDs in a script that does the HUPing which is the goal.
