• Xubuntu fails to stay awake when the machine is under load

  I have the following problem with a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04: I set up power management options so as to send the machine to sleep after it's been idle for a while. My intention was to have it finish some lengthy numbercrunching and then fall asleep late at night when nobody's present to shut it down. What actually happened, however, is that the machine goes to sleep whenever the desktop session has been idle for the specified amount of time, and it does not seem to care at all about CPU load, and I had to disable sleep altogether. Is there any way to fix this?

• As a programmer, are you required to do timesheets?

  Timesheets are something that I've never been fond of, but non-the-less something that is a requirement within my company. They don't bother me so much, but they seem to really grind some other people's gears. I suppose I have a few questions, and feedback would be great. Are you required to do timesheets, assuming you aren't a contractor? (That is understandable to me). What is the granularity of timesheets that you would be comfortable with or that you use? (ex: all entries must be under two hours). Would timesheets ever factor into your reasons for not accepting a job or leaving a current one? How has management within your organization justified timesheets if you aren't billing to a client?

• How to make 8.04's screen saver enter screen into standby?

  I am using Ubuntu 8.04 and despite using 'gnome-power-manager' to set dpms_method_ac to 'off' for backlight, the screen will not enter standby after set time. Also, "Put display to sleep when inactive for:" (via System-Preferences-Power Management) is already set to 1 minute. Interestingly enough, this only happens when I am logged in. When I am logged out, the screen does go into standby after set time. So I know it's not the screen... Any idea how make Ubuntu 8 screen saver enter screen into standby, while logged in?

• 13.10 Desktop - Stop Suspension on Lid Closure

  I'm having a problem with power management settings on my ASUS K52-F Laptop. Upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 earlier today; closing the laptop lid puts the laptop into suspension (even on AC Power - tried fixing it in gnome power settings, tried fixing it in Cinnamon power settings, tried changing it in DCONF-Editor, but no matter where I change the setting the laptop lid still suspends). After resuming from suspend, I restore to the gnome window/login manager (instead of Cinnamon login manager). Wifi doesn't reconnect, but the icon in Cinnamon shows that I'm connected. IFCONFIG shows that the interface is up and working normally, but still not reconnecting. ifconfig wlan0 down / up doesn't change anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Can I stop battery charging at say 80% and switch to AC?

  While I was looking for a battery management utility for my Dell E5420, I came to read this post - How can I limit battery charging to 80% capacity? . Sofar, I haven't found one that relates to my laptop. So, I wonder now if any battery manager utility can be found for my laptop specified above. I would be happy if someone could point me if such utility is available under Ubuntu 12.04 that can stop charging a battery at a certain percentage and to ONLY use A/C mode. Again, to start using battery mode when the A/C is off or when the battery level reaches at certain level. Thanks for all your help. Elim.

  Right now I am using something like this to delete duplicates in mysql table : delete t2 from my_table1 as t1, my_table1 as t2 where t1.TestCase = t2.TestCase and t2.id > t1.id; say I have a structure like this : ID TestCAse Result 1 T1 PASS 2 T2 FAIL 3 T3 FAIL 4 T3 PASS now, in the above case T3 is duplicate entry, and if I use the SQL that I mentioned above, it would delete 4th row where the result is PASS, but this is the row that I want to keep and I want row 3 to get deleted which is FAIL. Any help please? Thank you.

• Passenger: RailsBaseURI case sensitive?

  I used Passenger to deploy a RoR app to a sub URI on my domain. The problem I'm facing is that the sub URI seems to be case sensitive. Navigating to http://mydomain.com/RailsApp resolves fine. However, if I go to http://mydomain.com/railsapp, http://mydomain.com/railsApp, or any other variation, I get a 404 error. How can these requests using different casings get resolved correctly? I'm using 1.9.2. obj = Object.new obj.instance_eval {@bar &&= @bar} # => nil, expected obj.instance_variables # => [], so obj has no @bar instance variable obj.instance_eval {@bar = @bar && @bar} # ostensibly the same as @bar &&= @bar obj.instance_variables # => [:@bar] # why would this version initialize @bar?   I've been thinking about using Markov techniques to restore missing information to natural language text. Restore mixed case to text in all caps Restore accents / diacritics to languages which should have them but have been converted to plain ASCII Convert rough phonetic transcriptions back into native alphabets That seems to be in order of least difficult to most difficult. Basically the problem is resolving ambiguities based on context. I can use Wiktionary as a dictionary and Wikipedia as a corpus using n-grams and Markov chains to resolve the ambiguities. Am I on the right track? Are there already some services, libraries, or tools for this sort of thing?   Given a vector X of size L, where every scalar element of X is from a binary set {0,1}, it is to find a dot product z=dot(X,Y) if vector Y of size L consists of the integer-valued elements. I suggest, there must exist a very fast way to do it. Let's say we have L=4; X[L]={1, 0, 0, 1}; Y[L]={-4, 2, 1, 0} and we have to find z=X[0]*Y[0] + X[1]*Y[1] + X[2]*Y[2] + X[3]*Y[3] (which in this case will give us -4). It is obvious that X can be represented using binary digits, e.g. an integer type int32 for L=32. Then, all what we have to do is to find a dot product of this integer with an array of 32 integers. Do you have any idea or suggestions how to do it very fast?

  I am writing an application for a Java course. I am a complete beginner and am just going off material I have learned from the course and from the web. The application is exhibiting some behavior and I am not sure what is causing it. The application is GUI based and does calculations on user input. For the action listener section, I have a set of If statements such as: "if this button do this if this button do this" All in a row like that. It seems as if the application is running ALL the if statements instead of running the one that corresponds with the button pressed. Would I be better off using a case/switch structure for this sort of thing? I can post my code if necessary, I am new around this site and am not sure if that thing is acceptable.

  I have an asp.net web forms application that has been live for a number of years and as such has quite a lot of indexed content on google. Ideally, I'd prefer that all Url's for the website are in lowercase but I understand that having 2 versions of the same content indexed in search engines (MixedCase.aspx and mixedcase.aspx) will be bad for seo. I was wondering: a) Should I just leave everything in its current Mixed Case form and never change it? OR b) I can change the code so everything is in lowercase from here on in, BUT, is there a way of doing this so as the search engines are aware of this change and don't penalise me?

  I'm having some issues with the box.com developer API, and it seems that this is due to the API requiring lower-case booleans in request parameters. When I make a call to say, delete a folder, the URI my framework is generating looks like this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=True This doesn't work, and the API throws an error. However, if I manually set the URI to this: (DELETE) https://api.box.com/2.0/folders/1234?recursive=true Everything seems to work just fine. I'd like to confirm that this is indeed the behavior, and if it is, I'd like to request box fix their API!

  I'm having some trouble with the query below. I am trying to determine if the "category" field is A, B or C and then creating a field based on the category. That field would sum up payments field. But I'm running into error saying "incorrect syntax near keyword As". I am creating this in a SQL View.   I need to calculate the difference between two dates (facility_start_date, facility_end_date) for a report in Reporting Services in SQL 2005. If the facility_end_date is null then it needs to use the report parameter @EndDate in the calculation. However if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate, then it also needs to use the paramenter @EndDate. The code below works fine except that if the facility_end_date is greater than the parameter @EndDate it is still calculating between the facility_start_date and facility_end_date, rather than between the facility_start_date and @EndDate. Any help would be appreciated.
