• Display empty textbox using Html.TextBoxFor on a not-null property in an EF entity.

- by hungster
I am using Entity Framework (v4) entities. I have an entity called Car with a Year property of type integer. The Year property does not allow NULL. I have the following in my Create view: <%= Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.Year) %> I am required to return a new Car object (due to other requirements) in my HttpGet Create action in the CarController. Currently, a zero is displayed in the Year textbox because the Year property does not allow NULL. I would like to display an empty textbox in the Create view. How do I do this?

• Adaboost algorithm and its usage in face detection

- by Hani
I am trying to understand Adaboost algorithm but i have some troubles. After reading about Adaboost i realized that it is a classification algorithm(somehow like neural network). But i could not know how the weak classifiers are chosen (i think they are haar-like features for face detection) and how finally the H result which is the final strong classifier can be used. I mean if i found the alpha values and compute the H ,how am i going to benefit from it as a value (one or zero) for new images. Please is there an example describes it in a perfect way? i found the plus and minus example that is found in most adaboost tutorials but i did not know how exactly hi is chosen and how to adopt the same concept on face detection. I read many papers and i had many ideas but until now my ideas are not well arranged. Thanks....

• Multiple skins in ASP.NET MVC using StringTemplate

- by Jamie
I am considering the StringTemplate view engine for my ASP.NET MVC application. This application will be built with one skin, but I then expect many more, often very similar skins to be developed for it. This is primiarly the reason for my choice of StringTemplate as the view engine, as there will be zero logic in the views. In my head, I envisaged having each skin in a directory under the 'Views' directory in the folder structure, then maintaining a data structure which maps hostnames to skin directories. An obvious disadvantage of this approach is that I will have to explicitly specify my view files - an alternative might be to hack the implementation of the View() method to change the /views/controller/action standard path and insert an extra layer. Is anyone aware of any examples of implementations along these lines using ASP.NET MVC and StringTemplate at present? Can anyone forsee any potential problems with my approach? Thanks in advance.

• filling Bugzilla quip list

- by Gerhard
"Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if both are frozen." At the top of the Bugzilla page it prints a humorous/insightful quip. I have a list that I have been building up over the years as I encounter good one liners To brighten up my fellow developers days. What source did you use to fill your Bugzilla quip list. Online I have found only one interesting list. So maybe you can share some of the good quips from your bugzilla quiplist or maybe point me towards a interesting source online "I have an infinite capacity to do more work as long as you don't mind that my quality approaches zero - Dilbert."

• storekit In app purchase invalid product identifiers

- by Sridhar
Hello, I am getting zero product identifiers from SKProductsRequest I did the following steps a) created a In App Purchase Test User account under 'Manage Users' in iTunes Connect b) created some in app purchase products under 'Manage Your In App Purchases'. c) Loaded the app onto the iPhone, went to Settings-Store and logged out of the regular store d) set a breakpoint in the (void)productsRequest:(SKProductsRequest *)request didReceiveResponse:(SKProductsResponse *)response callback All the submitted Product ID's are in the response.invalidProductIdentifiers category. When submitting the request I use either the Product ID's used under b) directly or I tried to prefix them with the Bundle ID: Thanks In Adavance Raghu,

• Convert RGB value to HSV

- by marionmaiden
I've found a method on the Internet to convert RGB values to HSV values. Unfortunately, when the values are R=G=B, I'm getting a NaN, because of the 0/0 operation. Do you know if there is an implemented method for this conversion in Java, or what do I have to do when I get the 0/0 division to get the right value of the HSV? Here comes my method, adapted from some code on the Internet: public static double[] RGBtoHSV(double r, double g, double b){ double h, s, v; double min, max, delta; min = Math.min(Math.min(r, g), b); max = Math.max(Math.max(r, g), b); // V v = max; delta = max - min; // S if( max != 0 ) s = delta / max; else { s = 0; h = -1; return new double[]{h,s,v}; } // H if( r == max ) h = ( g - b ) / delta; // between yellow & magenta else if( g == max ) h = 2 + ( b - r ) / delta; // between cyan & yellow else h = 4 + ( r - g ) / delta; // between magenta & cyan h *= 60; // degrees if( h < 0 ) h += 360; return new double[]{h,s,v}; }

• How to programmatically open the application menu in a .NET CF 2.0 application

- by PabloG
I'm developing an C# / .NET CF 2.0 application: it's supposed to be used with the touchscreen deactivated, then, I'm looking for a way to programmatically open the application menu (not the Windows menu). Looking here I tried to adapt the code to the .NET CF 2 but it doesn't work (no error messages neither) public const int WM_SYSCOMMAND = 0x0112; public const int SC_KEYMENU = 0xF100; private void cmdMenu_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { Message msg = Message.Create(this.Handle, WM_SYSCOMMAND, new IntPtr(SC_KEYMENU), IntPtr.Zero); MessageWindow.SendMessage(ref msg); } Any ideas? TIA, Pablo After Hans answer, I edited the code to Message msg = Message.Create(this.Handle, WM_SYSCOMMAND, new IntPtr(SC_KEYMENU), new IntPtr(115)); // 's' key and added a submenu option as &Search, but it doesn't make any difference

• Simplest way on iPhone to unzip downloaded file?

- by Scott Pendleton
Goal: download a zipped file, unzip it, and save it in the iPhone app's Documents directory. The following code makes use of the initWithGzippedData method that was added to NSData in the Molecule app found here: http://www.sunsetlakesoftware.com/molecules As adapted to my app: NSString *sFolder = [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"Documents"]; NSString *sFileName = [sFolder stringByAppendingPathComponent:@"MyFile.db"]; NSURL *oURL = [NSURL URLWithString: @"http://www.isystant.com/Files/MyFile.zip"]; NSData *oZipData = [NSData dataWithContentsOfURL: oURL]; NSData *oData = [[NSData alloc] initWithGzippedData:oZipData]; [oZipData release]; b = [oData writeToFile:sFileName atomically:NO]; NSLog(@"Unzip %i", b); Result: A zip file is successfully downloaded. From it a new, supposedly unzipped file is created in the Documents directory with the desired name (MyFile.db) but it has zero bytes. Anybody see the problem? Or else is there a simpler way to unzip a downloaded file than the one used in the Molecules app?

• flex combobox hide and show down arrow

- by crazy horse
I am looking to implement a search text box as follows: When user starts typing in and there are non-zero results, the text box will open up and display the results below it. When the user selects a result, the text box closed, but this time with a down-arrow (like a combobox) so that the user can re-open the list. I suspect what I really need is a combobox with ability to hide/show the down arrow. How do I do this in Flex? Thanks in advance.

• WPF absolute positioning in InkCanvas

- by Nilu
Hi, I'm trying to position a rectangle in an InkCanvas. I am using the following method. Unfortunately when I add the rectangle it gets displayed at (0,0). Although when I query to see the whether the left property is 0 I get a non zero values. Does anyone know why this might be? Cheers, Nilu InkCanvas _parent = new InkCanvas(); private void AddDisplayRect(Color annoColour, Rect bounds) { Rectangle displayRect = new Rectangle(); Canvas.SetTop(displayRect, bounds.Y); Canvas.SetLeft(displayRect, bounds.X); // check to see if the property is set Trace.WriteLine(Canvas.GetLeft(displayRect)); displayRect.Width = bounds.Width; displayRect.Height = bounds.Height; displayRect.Stroke = new SolidColorBrush(annoColour); displayRect.StrokeThickness = 1; _parent.Children.Add(displayRect); }

• I keep getting a "System InvalidOperationException occurred in System Windows Forms dll" error in VB

- by Heartrent
I've just started learning VB.NET with VS 9.0; a small application I'm working on keeps returning an "A first chance exception of type System InvalidOperationException occurred in System Windows Forms dll" error from the Immediate Window. The application has almost zero functionality so far, it consists of a menu strip with: File About |Open |Save |Save As |Quit The only code I have written opens an Open File dialog, a Save As dialog, an About window with background sound and an OK button, and the Quit button which exits. Since there is almost no code for me to search through, I can't understand why there would be an error. The program runs just fine when I'm debugging it too.

• Objective-C and Android

- by Tom R
I've just finished a relatively large project for the Android, and it's left a bitter taste in my mouth with the knowledge that it will never run on one of the most ubiquitous handsets this side of the solar system (the one by that fruity little club). So, for my next project, I want to write it in a way that makes most of the components easily transportable between the iPhone and Android platforms. The way I'm thinking of doing this is by coding most of it in Objective-C, and then adding the platform-specific parts in more Objective-C and Java respectively. On the Android side, this will require using the the NDK. My knowledge of C is good, but my knowledge of Objective-C is close to zero, and I have no desire to learn C++. How sane is the approach above, and is there a better one? Is there any way I can code in Java and still reach the un-hacked iPhone market? And how likely is it that the people I know (iPhone users) will have an Android phone by next year?

• Relation between TCP/IP Keep Alive and HTTP Keep Alive timeout values

- by Suresh Kumar
I am trying to understand the relation between TCP/IP and HTTP timeout values. Are these two timeout values different or same? Most Web servers allow users to set the HTTP Keep Alive timeout value through some configuration. How is this value used by the Web servers? is this value just set on the underlying TCP/IP socket i.e is the HTTP Keep Alive timeout and TCP/IP Keep Alive Timeout same? or are they treated differently? My understanding is (maybe incorrect): The Web server uses the default timeout on the underlying TCP socket (i.e. indefinite) and creates Worker thread that counts down the specified HTTP timeout interval. When the Worker thread hits zero, it closes the connection.

• UITextView text disappear

- by user153412
Hi, i create an uitextview dynamically then i write my text into it. Sometime, when i create the uitextview, the cursor disappear and i see no text in it. If i run the application again, i can see the text inside the textview that i've created before. I've tried to set the cursor position to zero or scroll the text to the top but it doesn't work... Any suggestion? Here is a screen capture. You can see the gray uitextview, the keyboard (the textview is the firstresponder) but no cursor or text. http://yfrog.com/hqschermata20100325a11213p PS: i'm sorry for my bad english.

• CGBitmapContextCreate: unsupported parameter combination

- by tarmes
I'm getting this error when creating a bitmap context: CGBitmapContextCreate: unsupported parameter combination: 8 integer bits/component; 24 bits/pixel; 3-component color space; kCGImageAlphaNone; 7936 bytes/row. Here's the code (note that the context is based on the parameters of an existing CGImage: context = CGBitmapContextCreate(NULL, (int)pi.bufferSizeRequired.width, (int)pi.bufferSizeRequired.height, CGImageGetBitsPerComponent(imageRef), 0, CGImageGetColorSpace(imageRef), CGImageGetBitmapInfo(imageRef)); Width is 2626, height is 3981. I've leaving bytesPerRow at zero so that it gets calculated automatically for me, and it's chosen 7936 of its own accord. So, where on Earth is the inconsistency? It's driving me nuts.

• RegisterClientScriptBlock code not executing.

- by ProfK
I'm using the following code in an attempt to show a dialog with a list of errors on the client: if (rollout.ImportErrors.Count > 0) { ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock(GetType(), "showErrors", "showErrors();", true); } The error count is non-zero and the following script block is emitted, but the script isn't executing. If I call the function directly from a Firebug console window, the dialog shows properly, so I know the dialog and my code are working. What am I doing wrong? BTW, this code is in a content page, using a content placeholder that 'injects' code into the element of the rendered page.

• Unable to get the Current User's Token information

- by Ram
Hi, I have been trying to get the currently logged-in user's token information using the following code : [DllImport("wtsapi32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)] static extern bool WTSQueryUserToken(int sessionId, out IntPtr tokenHandle); [DllImport("kernel32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)] static extern uint WTSGetActiveConsoleSessionId(); static void Main(string[] args) { try { int sessionID = (int)WTSGetActiveConsoleSessionId(); if (sessionID != -1) { System.IntPtr currentToken = IntPtr.Zero; bool bRet = WTSQueryUserToken(sessionID, out currentToken); Console.WriteLine("bRet : " + bRet.ToString()); } } catch (Exception) { } } The problem is that, bRet is always false and currentToken is always 0. I am getting the sessionid as 1. Could someone tell me what's going wrong here? I want to use this token information to pass it to the CreateProcessAsUser function from a windows service. Thanks, Ram

• iPhone: NSTimer Countdown (Display Minutes:Seconds)

- by user298261
Hello! I have my timer code set up, and it's all kosher, but I want my label to display "Minutes : seconds" instead of just seconds. -(void)countDown{ time -= 1; theTimer.text = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%i", time]; if(time == 0) { [countDownTimer invalidate]; } } I've already set "time" to 600, or 10 minutes. However, I want the display to show 10:59, 10:58, etc. until it reaches zero. How do I do this? Thanks!

• SQL server query not showing daily date result

- by Andrew Jahn
I have a simple user production report where daily quotas are tracked. The sql returns a weeks worth of data for all users and for each day it tracks their totals. The problem is if they are out for a day and have a zero production for that day then the result query just skips that day and leaves it out. I want to return days even if the table has no entries for the person on that day. table: user date andy 3/22/10 andy 3/22/10 andy 3/23/10 andy 3/24/10 andy 3/26/10 result: andy 3/22/10 2 3/23/10 1 3/24/10 1 3/25/10 0 3/26/10 1 So my question is how do I get the query to return that 3/25/10 date with a count of 0. (current query I'm using): SELECT A.USUS_ID as Processor, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),A.CLST_STS_DTM,101) as Date, COUNT(A.CLCL_ID) as DailyTotal FROM CMC_CLST_STATUS A WHERE A.CLST_STS_DTM >= (@Day) AND DATEADD(d, 5, @Day) > A.CLST_STS_DTM GROUP BY A.USUS_ID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),A.CLST_STS_DTM,101) ORDER BY A.USUS_ID, CONVERT(VARCHAR(10),A.CLST_STS_DTM,101)

• Regex for circular replacement

- by polygenelubricants
How would you use regex to write functions to do the following: Replace lowercase 'a' with uppercase and vice versa Where words are separated by whitespaces and > and < are special markers, replace >word with word< and vice versa Replace postincrement (i++;) with preincrement (++i;) and vice versa. Variable names are [a-z]+. Input is just a bunch of these statements. Bonus: also do decrement. Also interested in solutions in other flavors. Note: this is NOT a homework question. See also my previous explorations of regex: Regex split into overlapping strings (Alan Moore's answer is especially instructive) Can you use zero-width matching regex in String split? (my solution exploits a known Java regex bug with regards to non-obvious length lookbehind!)

• _mask and Rails

- by Eric Koslow
So I am trying to get the cancan gem to work with my rails 3 app and I've hit a problem. I tried to copy the code that Ryan Bates (the creator of the gem) used in his screen cast, but I get an error saying that roles_mask is not a method. I figure that the _mask method was removed from Ruby/Rails at some point, and I'm now wondering what is the replacement. Here's the code in my user.rb model: named_scope :with_role, lambda { |role| {:conditions => "roles_mask & #{2**ROLES.index(role.to_s)} > 0 "} } ROLES = %w[admin student principal admissions] def roles=(roles) self.roles_mask = (roles & ROLES).map { |r| 2**ROLES.index(r) }.sum end def roles ROLES.reject { |r| ((roles_mask || 0) & 2**ROLES.index(r)).zero? } end def role? roles.include? role.to_s end def role_symbols roles.map(&:to_sym) end I'm using Rails 3 and Ruby 1.9.2dev Thank you

• Progress Bar design patterns?

- by shoosh
The application I'm writing performs a length algorithm which usually takes a few minutes to finish. During this time I'd like to show the user a progress bar which indicates how much of the algorithm is done as precisely as possible. The algorithm is divided into several steps, each with its own typical timing. For instance- initialization (500 milli-sec) reading inputs (5 sec) step 1 (30 sec) step 2 (3 minutes) writing outputs (7 sec) shutting down (10 milli-sec) Each step can report its progress quite easily by setting the range its working on, say [0 to 150] and then reporting the value it completed in its main loop. What I currently have set up is a scheme of nested progress monitors which form a sort of implicit tree of progress reporting. All progress monitors inherit from an interface IProgressMonitor: class IProgressMonitor { public: void setRange(int from, int to) = 0; void setValue(int v) = 0; }; The root of the tree is the ProgressMonitor which is connected to the actual GUI interface: class GUIBarProgressMonitor : public IProgressMonitor { GUIBarProgressMonitor(ProgressBarWidget *); }; Any other node in the tree are monitors which take control of a piece of the parent progress: class SubProgressMonitor : public IProgressMonitor { SubProgressMonitor(IProgressMonitor *parent, int parentFrom, int parentLength) ... }; A SubProgressMonitor takes control of the range [parentFrom, parentFrom+parentLength] of its parent. With this scheme I am able to statically divide the top level progress according to the expected relative portion of each step in the global timing. Each step can then be further subdivided into pieces etc' The main disadvantage of this is that the division is static and it gets painful to make changes according to variables which are discovered at run time. So the question: are there any known design patterns for progress monitoring which solve this issue?

• Flex 3.5 Accordion and TabNavigator selectedIndex Bug

- by majgis
I'm using Flex 3.5 with Adobe Flex Builder 3. I have found that if you very rapidly click between multiple headers of an accordion component or the tabs of TabNavigator, these components will begin to exhibit odd, unexpected behavior. Once this behavior has been evoked, even trying to set the selectedIndex programmatically does not end in the desired result. Specifically, if set the selectedIndex to zero (or click on the first tab/header) it might temporarily hop to that index but then will finish on a different index. Has anyone else experienced this behavior and do you know of a patch that can prevent the user from getting in a situation where the tab/header they click on is not the one made visible?

• iPhone Foundation - performance implications of mutable and xxxWithCapacity:0

- by Adam Eberbach
All of the collection classes have two versions - mutable and immutable, such as NSArray and NSMutableArray. Is the distinction merely to promote careful programming by providing a const collection or is there some performance hit when using a mutable object as opposed to immutable? Similarly each of the collection classes has a method xxxxWithCapacity, like [NSMutableArray arrayWithCapacity:0]. I often use zero as the argument because it seems a better choice than guessing wrongly how many objects might be added. Is there some performance advantage to creating a collection with capacity for enough objects in advance? If not why isn't the function something like + (id)emptyArray?

• Regular expressions in findstr

- by Johannes Rössel
I'm doing a little string validation with findstr and its /r flag to allow for regular expressions. In particular I'd like to validate integers. The regex ^[0-9][0-9]*$ worked fine for non-negative numbers but since I now support negative numbers as well I tried ^([1-9][0-9]*|0|-[1-9][0-9]*)$ for either positive or negative integers or zero. The regex works fine theoretically. I tested it in PowerShell and it matches what I want. However, with findstr /r /c:"^([1-9][0-9]*|0|-[1-9][0-9]*)$" it doesn't. While I know that findstr doesn't have the most advanced regex support (even below Notepad++ which is probably quite an achievement), I would have expected such simple expressions to work. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?
