• Replace gvimext.dll in Windows 8

  How can I get the "Edit with ... using tabs" functionality in gVim on Windows 8 (64-bit)? I'd like to swap out gVim's stock gvimext.dll for one that adds an "Edit with ... using tabs" option to Explorer's right-click context menu. On Windows 7 (64-bit) I used to be able to download the DLL and swap it in by following these instructions. However, I can't get it to work in Windows 8. The stock installation's context menu (sans "... using tabs") works fine (without a restart) ...but after replacing the DLL the gVim context menu options disappear and the gvimext.dll no longer seems to even load. (Windows 8 was restarted) if I again replace gvimext.dll with a backup of the stock DLL, the context menu options remain missing and the DLL still seems to fail to load (Windows 8 was restarted, again) If I re-install gVim, the context menu items return (even without a restart) What is the difference here between Windows 7 (where swapping DLL's works) and Windows 8 (where swapping DLL's fails)?

• Unix: sleep until the specified time

  Is there a (semi-)standard Unix command that would sleep until the time specified on its command line? In other words, I am looking for something similar to sleep that would take wakeup time rather than duration. For example: sleeptill 05:00:00 I can code something up but would rather not re-invent the wheel if there's already something out there. Bonus question: it would be great if it could take the timezone (as in sleeptill 05:00:00 America/New_York). edit Due to the nature of what I am doing, I am looking for a "sleep until T" rather than "run command at T" solution. edit For the avoidance of doubt, if I run the command at 18:00 and tell it to wake up at 17:00, I expect it to sleep for 23 hours (or, in some corner cases having to do with daylight savings time, for 22 or 24 hours.)

• Most common parts of a SELECT SQL query?

  I'm writing a function that generates a SELECT SQL query. (I'm not looking for a tool that already does this.) My function currently takes the following arguments which correspond to different parts of the SELECT query (the base table name is already known): where order fields joins group limit All of these arguments will be optional so that the function generates something like this by default: SELECT * FROM `table_name` I want to order the arguments so that the most often used parts of a SELECT query are first. That way the average call to the function will use as few of the arguments as possible rather than passing a null value or something like that to skip an argument. For example, if someone wanted to use the 1st and 3rd arguments but not the rest, they might have to pass a null value as the 2nd argument in order to skip it. So, for general purpose use, how should I order the arguments? Edit: To be more precise, out of the query parts I listed above, what is the order from most used to least used? Also, I'm not looking for solutions that allow me to not have to specify the order. Edit #2: The "fields" argument will default to "*" (i.e all fields/columns).

• How to move from Programmer to Project Lead

  At my job, I'm currently a programmer, but in the next few weeks I'll be taking control my own project. I was wondering if anyone else here has been in the same situation, and if so, what advice you can offer to help me be able to better run my project. Experience in dealing with contractors would be greatly appreciated. A little more info: Project will have 3 people including myself, with extra people coming in when needing testing. The project has been programmed mainly by 2 people I would like to contribute to the programming as I like doing it and think I can add to the program, but am afraid of how the contractors will react. I don't want to create bad feelings which may harm the project. EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'll have to be picking up communications with customers to make sure their needs are met. Any advice on talking to customers cold would be greatly appreciated. EDIT 2: This is not a new project, I'm picking it up around version 6. Sorry that I didn't make it clear before.

• Are there any Spreadsheet apps that are as easy and powerful to use as Vim?

  I'd like to use a spreadsheet that lets me move around cells like I do in Vim. As well, the more commands that are attributed to keyboard shortcuts, the better. Particularly stuff like making Text-to-Columns which is one of my more frequently used features in Excel. I don't mind learning the shortcuts if they allow me to just look at the spreadsheet page and forget about everything else. edit: The way I am thinking about the Spreadsheet right now is as if every cell is its own unique file. There should be a command where I choose to open that file and edit it right on the spot within the view of the spreadsheet. So I guess I want different modes like in vim which have commands and there should be one mode that is hooked up just to do operations or formatting which would be similar to command mode in Vim.

• GVim asks for passphrase on every action when using scp

  I want to use my vim config when editing files, but there are at least 5 different servers right now where I have to edit them. Of course I could use console (where I set up ssh-keys and and have a script so it wont asks for passhphrase), but then I have to maintain the vim config on every machine. so I decided to use gvim and browse/edit the remote machines via scp://, but on every action a popup appears asking for the passphrase. this is a ubuntu 10.10 install, with xfce installed later on. i checked in the xfce settings so gnome services should start, but it still won't remember the passphrase.

• Help updating cron entry using regular expressions

  hi I am trying to update a cron entry NOT by using crontab -e but by shell commands. For example the cron entry is like this: 10 * * * * /home/localuser/foo.sh -b 1 -h 4 > foo_output.sh 2>&1 No i need edit the command line parameters part ONLY i.e -b 1 -h 4 to something else which will be coming in from the user. First thing would be to write the crontab to a tmp file and then manipulate that temp file. Now, is there an easy way to edit that line using SED or something? The crude way wud be to delete that entire line, write a new line with the entire expression and then load that into the cron. I am not very good with regular expressions. My system supports sed -i so was thinking this could be done in a single line command. Thanks in advance

  Basically, I want to make api calls using an SDK I am writing. I have the following classes: Car CarData (stores input values needed to create a car like model, make, etc) Basically to create a car I do the following: [Car carWithData: cardata onSuccess: successHandler onError: errorHandler] that basically is a factory method that creates instance of Car after making an API call request and populating the new Car class with the response and passes that instance to the successHandler. So "Car" has the above static method to create that car, but also has non-static methods to edit, delete cars (which would make edit, delete API calls to the server) So when the Car create static method passes a new car to the successHandler by doing the following: successHandler([[Car alloc] initWithDictionary: dictionary) The success handler can go ahead and use that new car to do the following: [car update: cardata] [car delete] considering the new car object now has an ID for each car that it can pass to the update and delete API calls. My questions: Do I need a cardata object to store user inputs or can I store them in the car object that would also later store the response from all of the api calls? How can I improve this model? With regards to CarData, note that there might be different inputs for the different API calls. So create function might need to know model, make, etc, but find function might need to know the number of items to find, the limit, the start id, etc.

• What would prevent a .BAT file from being run on a mapped drive?

  In WinXP SP3, I have a .BAT file on a mapped drive. When I try to run this .BAT file (or even right click-edit) it gives me: --------------------------- Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- This happens with any .BAT file, no matter what is within the file. If the file is on my local computer (like C:) it will run just fine. If someone else runs it from another computer (on the same mapped drive), it runs just fine. I have full permissions on the drive; I can edit/delete/save/write/create in that folder and/or .BAT file and I've ruled out permissions being the issue. It seems like a security prevention, but I can't tell what it would be. It would have to be something on my PC, but I don't use any 3rd party software. What would cause this error?

• What happened to QuickTime Pro for Windows editing features?

  I used to record screencasts in SnagIt and then edit them in QuickTime Pro on windows with no problem. I haven't done it in a few months and now when I try most of the editing features have gone whack-a-doodle. For instance, if I got to delete a few seconds of video, it actually ends up deleting 20 seconds of video. I have repeated this on various source files including the Sample.mov that comes with QT. Using Edit-Cut looks like it works, but it doesn't actually do anything. Trim still works but that appears to be it. I know at least one other person has confirmed this behaviour. Does anyone have any work arounds. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. QT Info QT Pro 7.7.1 (1680.42) QuickTime Version 7.6.8 (1675)

• Need help recovering a corrupt SQL database

  I have a very special case that I have been working on for several days. I have a very large SQL Server 2008 database (about 2 TB) that contains 500 filegroups to support very large partitioned tables. Recently we had a catastophic failure on one of the drive and lost several filegroups and the database became in-accessible. We have been doing filegroup backups on a daily basis, but due to other issues, we lost our most recent backup of the log and the primary filegroup. We have all the data backed up but the primary filegroup backup is old. There have been no schema changes since the primary filegroup backup, but the lsn's are now all out of sync and we cannot recover the data. I have tried everything I could think of (and have tried just about every trick and hack I could google) but I still end up at the same point where I get messages saying that the files for filegroup x do not match the primary filegroup. I am now at the point of trying to edit the system tables (we have a separate temporary environment to do this so we are not worried about corrupting any production databases). I have tried updated sys.sysdbreg, sys.sysbrickfiles, and sys.sysprufiles to try to trick SQL into thinking all the files are online, but a "Select * From OPENROWSET(TABLE DBPROP, 5)" shows a different database state from what I see in sys.sysdbreg. I am now thinking I need to somehow edit the headers of the actual data files to try to line up the lsn's with the primary. I appreciate any help anyone can give me here, but please do not respond with things like "you are not supposed to do edit mdf, ndf files...." or "see msdn article....", etc. This is an advanced emergency case and I need a real hack so we can just get to the data in this corrupt database and export to a fresh new database. I know there is a way to do this, but not knowing what the DBPROP system functions does (i.e. does it look at system tables or does it actually open the file) is keeping me from trying to figure out how to fool SQL into allowing me to read these files.   I am looking for where the default Amazon AMI linux image sets up the privileges for the default ec2-user account. After logging in with this account I can use sudo successfully. Checking via the sudoers file, which I open by running visudo (with no other options) I see a few default settings and permissions for root ALL ALL So ... Where is the permissions for ec2-user assigned? I have not yet tried to add a new permission but ultimately I want to resign ec2-user for systems management tasks and use a non-full root user for administering the applications (stop and start mysql, httpd, edit apache's vhost files, and upload / edit web content under the web root)

• How to add entries to combobox in Word XP

  I'm trying to follow the following instructions to add a combobox to a form and add some values to it for the user to pick: http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/create-forms-that-users-complete-in-word-HP005230270.aspx I've created a .dot and then dragged a combobox onto the document. When I double-click on it though, it opens up the VBA editor. Do I have to add the items programatically as per the following question How do I add a combobox in Word? or is it possible to do this using the UI? The other question/answer refers to creating a form. Is there a step I've missed between creating a .dot to then create a form somehow before adding form elements to it? • Bug: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at

  I have recently installed new system on my disc, Ubuntu 12.04. Installation proceeded without problems, I started installing additional software and put data from other discs. I had already two times bug report, it was quite long, and I have no idea how to acces to log file (which probably is somewhere saved) and since I had to switch off the computer using the button, anything else was possible, here is just a small part of it (what I've noted on paper) could not write bytes: Broken pipe speach dicpatcher disabled: edit etc/default/speach-dispatcher saned disabled: edit .... and than: BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 0000009c I've run Memory test in GRUB, everything is fine. First time it occured when I was using rsync, second time when I was trying to install texlive. Should I install whole system once again? Or can it be hardware problem? Or something else? If there is any hardware details which may be relevant, please ask, since I have no idea what is happening, I don't know what kind of information could be useful. Thanks P.S. dmesg output:

• Changing the SkyDrive default path in Windows 8.1

  The deeper integration with SkyDrive is truly beneficial, but my laptop has a somewhat small primary drive (an 128 Gb MSATA SSD), and when possible, i try to move installations and other folders(like Documents and Downloads) to the secondary, 1 Tb drive. But i couldn't find any option to change the SkyDrive folder (it used to be in the secondary drive prior to the upgrade). Anyone have some idea how to change it? Thanks in advance! Edit 1: I've looked for an option to change this folder, to no avail. Really, it could only be a problem if i choose the option to keep my files offline, but it is exactly the option that i was looking for. Edit 2: Trying to install the old desktop app, the installer just quits silently.

• How many hours of use before I need to clean a tape drive?

  I do backups to a HP Ultrium 2 tape drive (HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448). The drive has a 'Clean' LED that supposedly will light up or blink when the drive needs to be cleaned. The drive has been in use since october 2005, and still the 'Clean' light has never been lit. The drive statistics are: Total hours in use: 1603 Total bytes written: 19.7 TB Total bytes read: 19.3 TB My question is: How many hours of use can I expect before I need to clean the drive? Edit: I have not encountered any errors using the drive. I do restore tests every two months, and every backup is verified. Edit 2: The user manual says: "HP StorageWorks Ultrium tape drives do not require regular cleaning. An Ultrium universal cleaning cartridge should only be used when the orange Clean LED is flashing." Update: It is now May 2010 (4.5 years of use), and the LED is still off, I have not cleaned, backups verify and regular restore tests are done.

  Hi, I just created an FTP connection in Aptana in which I made a mistake. I told Aptana to remember it anyway while I looked up the correct data (user/password and such). Now I want to edit the FTP connection but as soon as I click it tries to connect which results in an error. If I try to delete it, same story, it tries to connect and I get the error and the delete doesn't go through. So, I have a non working FTP connection that I can't delete nor edit.How do I get rid of this thing? Or how do I correct it? Cheers.

• How can I import a CSV file into an SQLite table that doesn't allow null values?

  I've been using the SQLite Manager extension for Firefox to edit my Chrome web data file in order to restore my keyword searches, and I think I have everything in place except that when I import a CSV file into a table, (a) it won't import into the actual table because the table doesn't allow null values (b) if I import it into a new table that does allow null values, then all the empty strings end up as null and I have to manually edit the row, type and delete a character, and then it's set to empty string and it's fine So: is there either a way to import the CSV so that empty cells are automatically turned into empty strings instead of null, OR is there a way once a table is imported that has null values to convert it into one that doesn't allow null values, where each formerly null value is the empty string?   Since 2.3, OpenLDAP uses a configuration engine called slapd-config. They said that use it make all LDAP configuration can be changed on fly. This is the header of /etc/ldap/slapd.d/cn=config.ldif: # AUTO-GENERATED FILE - DO NOT EDIT!! Use ldapmodify. I've changed data in it and some other files which have that header, after restarting slapd, my changes took effects. Is there anything else happen if I change those files manually? If I don't need 'change on fly', should I edit those file manually instead of using ldapmodify? Which application generated those files, and when? NOTE: I'm using openldap-2.4.28 on Ubuntu 12.04

  On a Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit laptop joined to a corporate domain, the Windows Firewall is disabled by a global policy. Is there any way to enable the Windows Firewall in this scenario? The gpedit.msc setting Windows Firewall: Protect all network connections is inaccessible. EDIT: It appears that changing HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\gpsvc\Start value to 4 will disable the GPO and allow you to start the firewall and stop the bots from pushing cr*p to your computer... will check on Monday and if it works I'll confirm here in case someone else in my situation wonders upon this question... EDIT: It's probably better if I write a mock windows service not doing anything and name it according to what is expected to be on my box and than crete mock McCrappy executable and mock McCrappy folder structure and remove all the actual stuff... That would take a little time but would most certainly make my box completely stealthy...

• Windows Server 2003 - Give User Full Admin Privileges

  I am running Windows Server 2003. There are a couple of user accounts that I would like to promote to Administrator accounts. I've tried several ways to do so, but I am still relatively new to setting up a server. If anyone has any ideas on how to go about promoting these users, I thank you in advance. EDIT: I should probably mention that this a domain controller. I didn't realize that this changed the answer I was looking for. I apologize, like I said before I am new to the world of servers. EDIT #2: I've added the users to the Administrator group like most of the answer recommended, but the users don't seem to have admin rights yet. I think this might be because they are also in the Domain Users group, which I can't seem to be able to remove them from.

• Internal speakers do not work

  I have a new (from scratch, not update) installation of Ubuntu 12.10 on my notebook, Asus A3Ac (It is based on Intel Centrino - Pentium M with full duplex Intel HDA codec). In older versions of Debian-based systems Intel HDA audio didn't work correctly. Alsamixer display wrong outputs and inputs (more than notebook really have). In clean installations internal speakers were playing, but they didn't mute when headphones was plugged in. There was a solution (propably not the best but working) - edit as root /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add a line "options snd-hda-intel model=z71v position_fix=1". After restart it worked correctly (alsamixer displayed correct devices and internal speakers were muted after I plugged in headphones). It was also working in Ubuntu 12.04. In Ubuntu 12.10 I have another problem. The alsamixer in default (don't have to edit alsa-base.conf) display correct outputs and inputs but internal speakers don't working if the headphones isn't plugged in. I have to manually disable "Auto-Mut" option in alsamixer, then the internal spakers works (but of course they don't mute when the headphones are pluged in). Thanks for any idea how to fix it. I'm not sure if it is a bug or it's caused by a "specific hardware". Tomas

• In OpenOffice Spreadsheet, how can I set the default Date format?

  I'm using OO 3.1.1 on Ubuntu 9.10 (in case that matters to the answer). I like my dates to appear as YYYY-MM-DD. I can't think of a time when I want to see a date in any other format, so I'm constantly changing how dates look. That's manageable, though annoying. What's gotten me to the point of posting is that when I edit a cell with a date value, I have to edit it in the format MM/DD/YYYY, which is really, really annoying, as I'm usually mucking with the day (or possibly the month), and very seldom the year. So there's lots of cursor or mouse use, wasting my time. So is there a way that I can change how dates are edited, or at least the default display format? Thanks!

• Bad previous code. To fix or not to fix?

  As a freelancer programmer I am often asked to edit part of an application source code in order to add functionalities, fix bugs etc. While I'm on my adventure journey to study the source to do what I'm asked correctly I run into code like: World::User* GetWorld() { map<DWORD,World*>::iterator it = mapWld.find( m_userWorldId ) if( it != mapWld.end() ) return &it->second; return NULL; } if( pUser->GetWorld()->GetId() == 250 ) If I investigate further I end up finding that the DWORD class member of User, userWorldId can be a value non-found in the map mapWld, which will lead to a casuality as also known as crash! The obviously valid way to do it is: World* pWorld = pUser->GetWorld(); if( pWorld && pWorld->GetId() == 250 )//... Sometimes when it's something just 'small' I end up sort of 'fixing' it. But sometimes when I'm on a 500 thousand line source code and this kind of code is everywhere there is no much can do. The question is if it's politically correct to fix some of these things. Think of it; You are not paid to fix it. Perhaps you think it's right, but it was necessarily done that way for some reason and you should not be messing with it. You do not have authorization, you do not own the source and none of the copyrights belong to you. You have authorization to edit issues accordingly to the owners but you're in a hurry, you have many other projects to do, it's the end of the month, you must pay the bills. Sincerely, I think of it as seeing an animal die from a disease in front of you, you have the cure in your hands but you do nothing. What is the best to do in this scenario?
